Happy Indigenous Peoples Day. _____________________ Today, more than ever, I believe it is crucial to honor those who built gender egalitarian societies—wherein sexual violence was virtually unheard of—rather than the man who symbolizes the targeted destruction and dismantling of those values and societies. I say this despite seeing a quite impressive 75ft statue of the man from my bedroom window in Columbus Circle for over a decade and my 23&me recently informing me I am, in fact, blindingly white. _____________________ I of course love my country, particularly its capacity for change, but when you learn both sides of our history, it’s very interesting to think that many of the values we now view as progressive—gender equality, non-violence, respect for the natural world (the only home we have), communities taking care of their own, and recognition and respect for LGBT or two-spirit people—are actually as traditional as it gets and predate our nation’s founding. _____________________ Native peoples have been practicing these values and beliefs long before any person claimed to discover this land and began normalizing sexual violence, particularly against Native women. That a conquering mentality toward Native women came with a conquering mentality toward Native land is no coincidence. They are inextricably linked. _____________________ While the legacy of colonialism threatens these values, many non-Natives are beginning to wake up and take action. Historical silences are being broken. Of course there will push back, such things do not come without effort and cost, but the trajectory is clear. Thank you to the courageous survivors and Native activists for keeping alive the good fight, even when it appeared no one was listening. Many are. _____________________ Was going to offer apologies for the long impassioned post, but perhaps the 0.3% Native American in me briefly outweighed the 60% british… _____________________ #violenceagainstwomenact #vawa #vawa18 #protectsurvivors
