At @acltv , @timmytychilders shared fond early and late memories of John. One of his favorite memories was when he was on tour with him, someone told John it was a crew member’s birthday so John quickly pulled out a Dairy Queen coupon from his pocket and sent someone to pick up an ice cream cake without hesitation. You can listen to the studio version of Tyler’s cover of “Yes, I Guess They Oughta Name a Drink After You” on Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine, Vol. 2! John Prine singing songs circa 1966 during his military days in Germany. “Sitting on my bunk in the barracks, in Germany, playing my Gibson Hummingbird. My Dad shipped it over to me. That’s my buddy Arnie, from the song ‘Pretty Good,’ where I sing ‘…I got a friend in Fremont…’ I’d just sing for the guys. They always wanted to hear me play. They all liked country music except for Arnie, he thought it was corny. I was writing songs in the Army, but I was just singing the songs I’d learned to sing for my Dad.”

From a party over at John’s in 1988. Leon Redbone had just attempted to fix John’s jukebox by moving a couple of tubes around when we heard a pssst sound and some smoke curled up from inside. That’s when this picture was taken! Don’t know if it ever worked again. Photo & story from Jim Rooney #JohnPrine #LeonRedbone
