Hi. How are you? I have been enjoying a time of relative calm, ease and peace. I wish I could give you the formula that brought it to me. I’m keeping up with my systems (exercise, good sleep, meditation, consistent with my meds, healthy eating, very little alcohol, etc) but I haven’t been perfect. Still, I’m feeling really good. And I’m so grateful. I’m trying not to take it for granted when I have a string of “good days.” I try to remember those times when I wake up and can barely get out of bed. And I’m trying to stay right here in this moment and enjoy every bit of it. I hope this note finds you all doing well. If it doesn’t, I hope you feel better soon. Either way, I invite you all to leave a comment on what’s happening with you. I promise to read it. And I bet others will too. As always, sending you a 100 foot wave of hope. If you find yourself sinking to someplace new, or scary, contact @988lifeline for 24 hour assistance. ❤️✌️
Lately, I’ve been making an effort to talk about it more. I’m not letting it take over my life. It doesn’t have to define me. And I don’t want to constantly complain to my family and friends. But I do find it helpful to be honest about where I’m at with my struggles. Just saying the words out loud that I’m feeling anxious, depressed, exhausted today… it can be really helpful. Do you have someone to talk to? Do you have a place to put those feelings? I’d like to offer you the chance to respond here with what’s going on with you if you’d like. And I promise I will read every one of them. As always, sending you a giant wave of light, health, and hope. And if you are getting to a scary point, please contact @988lifeline. Text/chat/call anytime and there’s someone there for you.
This is a big one for me. My oldest daughter Ora is a natural born artist. She’s been singing harmonies from her car seat since she was 3. We’ve been playing music together and making dumb videos together her whole life. And now she’s 16. So we decided to make a short film. I wrote something for us to act in together that @katieaselton could direct. Something about fathers, teenaged daughters, mental health. But with Christmas songs and giggles, too. We shot up at our cabin in Mt Baldy and we agreed we wouldn’t show anyone if it stunk. But it didn’t! And now we’re premiering OH CHRISTMAS TREE at the @tribecafilmfestival in June. And I can’t believe that I’ve been so fortunate to spend my life making art with the people I love…. my wife, my brother, and now with oldest my daughter, with whom it seems I was just yesterday playing @coldplay’s YELLOW on stage at her 2nd grade school fair. So at the risk of sounding corny, I am so proud to introduce you to @ora_duplass. More soon. So much more…

Heading to the @sagawards with my favorite disco ball @katieaselton on my arm and a brand new pet caterpillar on my lip.
Sometimes we sneak away. Those movies tend to be my favorites.
Anyone else experiencing the winter blues? Between the weird weather, limited daylight, and slower energy, it can be a strange time. It’s in these moments (and all year round, really) that we should check in on one another. We should all learn how to spot the warning signs for suicide so we can help our friends, family, and ourselves if it’s ever necessary. Research shows no one takes their life for a single reason. They might show signs of suicidal ideation through talk, behavior, and/or mood. Join @markduplass and @afspnational to #TalkAwayTheDark. Learn how to have a direct conversation about mental health and suicide. Connect someone to help. Find tips and get involved at afsp.org/TalkAwayTheDark (link in AFSP’s bio). And remember, the amount of daylight is increasing now until the summer solstice!

Money can’t buy happiness. But it can buy rescue dogs. For most of my life I have been allergic to dogs. And so I was never a “dog person.” But one day we decided to try it anyway and we adopted Blue (the big one). I’ll never forget when I told my incredible, wise friend @jenniferaniston that I was adopting a dog. She looked me in the eye with a gentle, knowing smile and said… “Let her teach you.” So that’s what I’ve been doing. And then we got Murphy (the smaller one). And I can’t describe the joy, fun, love and snuggles these pups have brought into our home. Rescue a pup. They’ll rescue you right back.
Last year, during the Hollywood strikes, @ifcfilms released @meleslyn’s and my film BIOSPHERE. It was a project years in the making. It started with a small idea of two men running around an enclosed, post-apocalyptic biodome, arguing about Super Mario Brothers. I brought it to my long time collaborator Mel Eslyn, and it turned into so much more… #nospoilers The sad part was, we weren’t able to go out and promote the film due to the limitations of the strike. So we went in and out of theaters quickly. And very few people actually saw the film. Which was heartbreaking. But, like all good Hollywood stories, here comes the twist… As of today we are AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON @hulu! And it feels like this is truly the release of the film. And you can stream it for free this weekend. It’s daring, bold, a little strange, and full of big humor and heart. And the incomparable @sterlingkbrown delivers what I think is his best performance. So find someone you love (or kinda like) and snuggle up with BIOSPHERE this weekend!
For those of you following the PENELOPE saga… we’ve found our US home in @netflix. I can’t believe I was writing these scripts almost four years ago. I can’t believe we’re about to bring this into the world. This story is deeply special to me. I cannot wait for you all to see it. We’ll have more news on the international portion of the release as it comes. ❤️✌️

JAZZY. This film is a portrait of Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreux, a young Oglala Lakota girl growing up in South Dakota. Shot over 6 years, the film explores the lives and ever changing relationships of her peer group as they leave the dreamlike world of childhood behind. For those who have seen THE UNKNOWN COUNTRY, JAZZY lives within the same world. Much of the same creative team has returned alongside director/writer/producer Morrisa Maltz… including producer Lainey Bearkiller Shangreaux, producer/editor/writer Vanara Taing, DP Andrew Hajek, producer Miranda Bailey and Natalie Whalen, and co-producer Katherine Harper. Could not be prouder to be a small part of the creative family bringing this movie to @tribecafilmfestival in June. More soon…
This is a lovely honor. But my favorite part of the news this morning was chatting with my fellow nominees. And, almost to a person, the question has changed from the previous years’ “congrats aren’t you so excited” to “congrats… how are you?” It’s hard right now. For almost all of us. Please take care of yourselves and each other. If things become too overwhelming or if you feel yourself heading somewhere new and scary, text/call/chat @988lifeline 24-7. Sending you all love, light, and that 100 foot wave of hope.
This sweet girl is a rescue pup. She is so happy with the simplest comforts… food, naps, snuggles, playtime. She has taught me so much. Given me so much. If you’re missing a little something in your life, please consider pet adoption. One of the best decisions @katieaselton and I ever made.
It’s Mental Health Month. How are you taking care of yourself? It’s the small steps we take that create the essential momentum toward healing and recovery. If you’re looking to get involved in making mental health a priority, the TWLOHA community is taking action and we’d love for you to join us. We have some big dreams and it’s only possible with your support. We’re aiming to raise $175,000 by May 31st. These funds are critical so that TWLOHA can bring a message of hope, connection, and mental health support to 20,000,000 people this year. You can start a fundraiser or donate directly to our goal here on Instagram. Every story, every conversation, every dollar matters when we’re fighting for people to stay alive and find healing. There will also be thousands of people across the globe moving for our stories, our loved ones, and our communities this May 25th. It’s not too late to register for TWLOHA’s Move For It 5K , which includes early access to an Introductory Mental Health Toolkit. A digital resource hub that was built to remove certain barriers that exist when trying to care for your mental well-being. There is no step too small. There is no voice too quiet. There is no wrong way to start prioritizing your mental health right now. You are worth the effort. We all are.
