I’m always questioning how hard I should fight anxiety and depression when it comes, and how much I should try to accept it and simply move through it. It’s not a simple answer. But lately I’ve been holding a helpful image. A river. I’m on a wide river, fast flowing current, impenetrably high stone walls on either side. This is when my mental health is at its worst. It feels hopeless. All I can think to do is swim against the current and try not to drown. But it’s exhausting, and I get nowhere. But then I try to remind myself that this river will likely change as it goes along. There will be times when the current slows. The river narrows. There may be some fallen tree trunks lodged in the middle where I can hang on for a moment to take a breather. So I change my tactic. I stop fighting the current. I flip on my back, look up, and start to float. And have faith that I’ll find some relief when the river brings me the opportunity. And maybe it’ll narrow and the stone walls will recede, and there might even be a nice sandy beach that I can reach. And I realize that everything is a phase. And that maybe I just need to ride the river best I can and keep my eyes open for the places on the shore to rest, breathe, and lay in the sun. And be thankful for those moments. Sending big love. And relentless storms of hope. If you find yourself headed somewhere scary, call/text/chat @988lifeline 24-7.
This is one of my daughter @itsoraduplass’ new headshots. Because she is an actor at the beginning of her career. And that means she is no longer the baby I need to endlessly bounce on a large ball while singing @themagfields THE BOOK OF LOVE to get her to sleep. Life is… bonkers. Also, fun update on our short film OH CHRISTMAS TREE. After we premiere at @tribecafilmfestival in early June we’ll screen next at @nantucketfilmfestival, where @jayduplass and @katieaselton showed one of our early short films 20 years ago. Because life is bonkers. ❤️

A true story (warning, a little corny). I have been on set more than usual lately. Working very hard, long hours. The exhaustion is setting in. And because I’m a human being, the “grass is greener” mentality has started to rear its head. I’ve been thinking how much I miss the quiet, simple days of camping and backpacking in nature. And how once I get back to that lifestyle, then I’ll be happy! A way of thinking that we all know is… not helpful. So this past week I’ve tried a different approach. When I can, I sit in my backyard. It’s not the Appalachian Trail by any means. But it’s pretty quiet and there are nice olive trees and some rosemary. Little birds and squirrels. And I try to bring my backpacker’s mindset to this seemingly subpar microcosm of the woods I love so much. And… it’s kinda working. And then, this morning, as I was drinking my coffee and looking at nothing in particular. A gorgeous multi-colored hawk flew over my yard and landed in a nearby tree. The kind of hawk I normally only see once I’m deep in the trails. And he just sat there and hung out with me for a little bit. As always, if you find yourself heading someplace scary, call/text/chat @988lifeline 24 hours a day. You belong here. There’s a way forward.
“There is nothing to fear… but fear itself.” I think FDR had a different context in mind, but this quote sticks with me as it relates to mental health. As those of you have been in the shit can likely attest to, you can become afraid… of becoming afraid. You know what anxiety and depression have done to you in the past. You fear its return, which can seemingly come out of nowhere sometimes. So, like a trauma victim, sometimes even the slightest hint of nerves or sadness can trigger that deeper fear… “Oh no. Is it coming for me?” I know this feeling all too well. But I’m getting tired of it. So today, I’m choosing to be like Kevin in Home Alone when he goes down into the basement and comes upon that previously terrifying furnace. I’m gonna look it in the eye, recognize it for what it is, and say what Kevin so eloquently said… “Shut up.” And I think that’s okay. There’s a time to validate those fears. To let them in and reckon with them. But sometimes those fears don’t deserve that attention. They are just irrational relics from our past that no longer serve us. Sometimes I can just tell them to shut up. And go find something more enjoyable to do with my day. That’s what I’m gonna try to do today. As always, sending you a 100 foot wave of hope and light. If you are having a particularly scary moment, @988lifeline is always a text/chat/phone call away.

Duplass Brothers Productions, circa 1978. An enormous part of who I am (maybe the biggest) is my outsized confidence. It came from loving parents who made me feel safe. And it came from a big brother like Jay, who always looked at me like this. Enjoying me, making me feel loved, funny, smart, worthwhile. It’s the greatest gift imaginable. I think about it daily. And I think about what I can do to give this gift, which was so generously given to me, to others that might need it. Love you @jayduplass.
I got nominated for @themorningshow and I also kinda look like The Joker in this picture. #astraawards
