Owen Jones Instagram – I’m an Islington South voter, and I’m voting @thegreenparty for the first time.

Come and join me campaigning on 23rd June at 11am.

Just a little explanation. I’ve only ever voted Labour in a general election. In the last three, I voted for Emily Thornberry.

I liked her and respected her. Then she went and spoiled it all by saying stupid like legitimising war crimes.

On 10th October 2023, Emily Thornberry went on national television and was repeatedly asked if Israel cutting off food, water, energy etc was a war crime. There is an easy answer to this, and you don’t need to be a lawyer – Emily Thornberry is – to know the answer, which is: yes.

Thornberry instead refused to say these are war crimes, offered meandering answers about how it could be legally defensible for a period, and said Israel had an “ABSOLUTE” right to defend itself.

Well, we’ve seen that absolute right play out in front of our eyes, haven’t we? The mass slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinians, many of them kids – and indeed the mass starvation of Palestinians and death from lack of, say, the medicine Israel cut off in its siege.

The war crimes Thornberry refused to condemn were cited in the International Criminal Court’s prosecutor’s request for arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his defence minister.

Thornberry will never wash away the shame. What she did – legitimising a genocidal rampage – was unforgivable, and it should haunt her for the rest of her life.

There’s so many other reasons, of course. The Greens stand for policies Labour abandoned – taxing the rich, investing in crumbling services, public ownership, workers’ rights, taking on the climate emergency, and a lot more.

Not to do down the party I’m voting for, but they’re not going to win here. It would be great to have a decent showing so they come second, so they’re in a strong position next time.

There’s zero chance of the Tories winning either in the UK, or in Islington South. (Here, the YouGov mega survey at the start of June had Labour on 67.2%, Lib Dems on 11.2%, Greens on 10.8%, Tories on 5.9%).

Vote with your conscience!

The Tories are toast. Let’s send Labour a message. | Posted on 17/Jun/2024 18:35:10
