Turning the Big 5-0. Can’t believe it. I got to celebrate half a century in the birthplace of civilization. More importantly, I got to celebrate it with my wife, kids and family and friends who’ve been there from the start. This year has been incredibly trying health wise (3 hospitalizations) and work wise (2 union strikes). I had big plans coming into 50 and life said “Fuck yo couch”, but it also opened up opportunities for God to show me what to truly be grateful for. These people. This trip. I used to let anxiety fuel me to be great. I no longer want that. I want peace to fuel that. That is the promise I made to myself for the next 50 years. I got to celebrate 20 years of marriage to my wife on this trip and @mz_money_penny has been the biggest blessing in my life along with my children. I got to see all the beauty and technology black people created and will never be the same. Ever. Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and want nothing but blessings for all of you. I’m at a peace I’ve wanted for many years.

So thankful to have premiered last night @sxsw for A Peoples History of Black Twitter. So many incredible people to thank from @onyxcollective @itsjasontoyou @culturehousemedia @apfythoughts @joiejacoby @vanlathan @mz_money_penny and of course the CULTURE because everything we did for #blacktwitterhulu we did because our history is not normally documented. With what is happening in this country with our history being replaced or “remanufactured” our future selves need to know what we did. 💈: @erikdabarber 👔: @1manstrash @edixonthewardrobeguy (and yes those are riding pants and boots) 🔥🔥 💄: @iblessfaces_artistry

Can’t wait for you all to see Black Twitter: A Peoples History on @hulu on May 9. The power was never in the platform. It was always in US. Pull up and see what me and @onyxcollective put together. At a time when they are erasing our history, it’s paramount we TELL IT ALL.
Sorry to disturb, but my first foray into documentary filmmaking is picking up Emmy consideration and was one of the most special experiences of my career. Making BLACK TWITTER: A PEOPLE’S HISTORY was an honor and privilege. All three parts are streaming now on Hulu! If you all could post this on your socials I’d greatly appreciate it. If not, I get it. But I won’t forget. I will NEVER forget. LOL. Love y’all! Vote for this bih
At our Documentary Spotlight event with Pure Nonfiction, Black Twitter director Prentice Penny spoke on what attracted him to the project. Full panel is up at AnklerEnjoy, our hub for Ankler event content at the link in bio. #prenticepenny #blacktwitter

You’ve probably heard or read these phrases somewhere: “Oscars So White,” “Me Too,” “Say Her Name,” “Black Girl Magic,” “Black Lives Matter.” They’ve all become part of the national lexicon. What you may not know, or have forgotten, is that they originated on an area of social media that included smart, informed reactions from Black celebrities, authors, journalists and just about anyone with a voice. It was called Black Twitter. Now that Twitter is called X and has lost its luster (plus many of its users), former “Insecure” showrunner Prentice Penny and Wired writer Jason Parham have teamed up as executive producers to document those times in Hulu’s three-part docuseries “Black Twitter: A People’s History.” Like a time capsule of sorts, the series looks back at what it meant to those coining phrases and having discussions in 140 characters or less. For Penny, it’s the first project in a deal with Hulu’s Onyx Collective brand, and a whole new direction for him. “It was really wanting something, a few things,” Penny says: “One, it was me wanting whatever I did next not to be compared to ‘Insecure.’ I felt I had just done something really special and kind of hit a peak of a mountain, and I didn’t want whatever I did next to actually be like, ‘Oh, well, that’s not “Insecure.”’ And I also wanted to break creatively. I’ve been doing scripted television, specifically in the half-hour space, since [2004]. So I’d been doing it at that point for 17 years. And I want to be scared again. And that’s how ‘Insecure’ made me feel. It made me feel creatively inspired again. And I wanted whatever I did next to come from that place.” @the_a_prentice sat down with #TheEnvelope.
