LIFE – fluid, invisible, inaudible… Ryuichi Sakamoto Shiro Takatani An installation piece made of deconstructed sounds and images used in the opera “LIFE”(1999). The opera LIFE was a requiem for the 20th century and a vision for the 21st century, made with music, words, images, and body movements on the themes of war and revolution, science and technology, and of coexistence. In the act of converting the opera into an installation format, the artists became additionally interested in exploring the boundaries between various perceptible and imperceptible things as expressed in the subtitle “fluid, invisible, inaudible.”, resulting in the work involving fog. The fragments of images and sounds are divided into 20-30 groups according to a taxonomical system used in the study of natural history. async – first light Ryuichi Sakamoto Apichatpong Weerasethakul People at a film screening, the sea, the view of a country road from a car, a sleeping child, an adult, a dog… Thai filmmaker and artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul interpreted Sakamoto’s album async as a personal work and asked people close to Weerasethakul to shoot footage using his pocket-sized Digital Harinezumi camera. The images, that the camera captured, are snippets of people’s personal and everyday moments rendered in grainy, low-resolution with uniquely warm colors. Weerasethakul describes Sakamoto’s music as very “refreshing” and that it gave him the feeling of encountering the sounds of nature for the first time. He says, “It’s like when one opens his or her eyes in the morning and remembers the first light, first image that one sees. The production started from wanting to pick up just the sounds that objects were emitting. I listened to various sounds using a contact microphone and rubbed or tapped non-instrumental “things.” When I collected sounds this way and listened to S (Sound) and N (Noise)—which used to be acknowledged as opposites but now have become interchangeable—I realized that M (Music) was missing. A desire arose in me that I needed M in the sounds I wanted to hear. I became conscious to the fact that M was necessary in one form or another and I began to include elements of M in my composition. An exemplary work is “Poème Symphonique for 100 metronomes” (1962) by György Ligeti, which utilizes 100 metronomes. There are multiple “times” running simultaneously in this piece and has no central tempo. It’s rare to see this kind of music anywhere in the world. Even traditional folk music generally has a central tempo. Multi-temporal pieces are constructed not to have an end. They can go on continuously without beginnings or endings. The piece had to end somewhere out of convenience in order to include it in an album, though. Repost • @commmons_official commmons: vinyl collection 「out of noise – R」9/25(水)発売決定! 2009年にリリースされたcommmons移籍第一弾となるソロ・アルバム「out of noise」のリマスター盤。坂本龍一本人のディレクターズカット版として残されたデータを新たにマスタリングし、タイトルに「- R」が追加されLP、CD、配信で新たにリリース!!未発表曲の「081121_high」も収録。 全曲インストゥルメンタルの静かな作品で、オリジナル・ソロ・アルバムとしてはシンセサイザーを一切使わない初めてのアルバム。ピアノ、自然音を主体に、ゲストにイギリスの古楽演奏グループのフレットワーク、笙奏者の東野珠実、雅楽の南都晃耀会に小山田圭吾、清水ひろたか、高田漣、クリスチャン・フェネス、ロブ・ムースら多彩なジャンルの弦楽器奏者が招かれている。アルバム制作中に訪問した北極圏での体験に強く影響を受けた「disko」「ice」「glacier」も収録。「glacier」は後に映画『レヴェナント:蘇えりし者』(アレハンドロ・ゴンサレス・イニャリトゥ監督:2016年)、「hibari」「hwit」は、『怪物』(是枝裕和監督:2023年)劇中にも使用された。 「トニー滝谷」初アナログレコード化!9/25(水)発売! 村上春樹の短編小説を市川準監督が2005年に映画化した『トニー滝谷』のサウンドトラック。 コンサートでよく演奏される「Solitude」などピアノ演奏のみの静謐で美しい世界。 #skmtnews #ryuichisakamoto #坂本龍一 #outofnoise #reissue
“This installation depicts the various appearances of water through falling raindrops, the generation of ripples, and changes in sound. Data of the weather from certain seasons and regions in Asia was converted into droplets, sound changes, and low frequency waves, which then appear as varied ripples on the surface of the water filling the center of the space. A fundamental substance for supporting life, water possesses special properties within the natural world. This work is a visual and aural expression of water through sequence control, and a device that creates the effect of freely falling rain with large amounts of water. Water changes its state from ice, water, to water vapor depending on the temperature. We will never grow tired of observing the various natural phenomena that water produces, such as rain, clouds, fog, snow, seas, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, icebergs, glaciers, etc..
