RIP Steve Lawrence— This guy has been a musical hero of mine for years. His effortless baritone and superb phrasing made the most difficult songs sound easy. He was a profound influence, and when I actually got to meet him one night after doing a show in Vegas, I learned that he was also as nice and humble a guy as ever there was. Thanks for leaving behind so many incredible recordings, Steve. You’ll be missed.

Our current Supreme Court has been transformed by Donald Trump and the Republican Party, further empowering the above dissenters like Alito and Thomas. In fact, that 2015 decision would almost certainly never have come to pass under today’s court. Do we continue along a regressive path, or steer ourselves back toward the above? Up to you. Thanks @davidagoodman1 for this great recommendation. A media handler for Nixon once wrote, “Voters are basically lazy. Reason requires a high degree of discipline, of concentration; impression is easier… The emotions are more easily roused, closer to the surface, more malleable.” Unfortunately, we’re seeing some of that play out right now. People are absorbing opinions from TikTok and from podcasts, as opposed to vetted information from journalism and books. And we wonder why we’re such a fractured republic. It’s an election year. Do yourself a favor and turn off the internet, pick up a book, and read it: This terrific examination of the warring durabilties and fragilities of our system by Heather Cox Richardson is a great reminder of the importance of staying engaged in the preservation of democracy while there’s still time. The book is an easily digestible read, and a great way to learn the history of what it is we’re trying to protect. As Churchill said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” Let’s preserve the one we have.
