Frank Stella’s mark on my practice is undeniable and much larger than I speak about. While studying the gifts he made to @kunstmuseumbasel I realized that his generosity and thoughtfulness and brazen passion for art making was so complete and contagious that he made space for a whole new part of my practice that I can, “The Floor Works.” Thank you, Frank for your contributions to making and for your deep impact on me!

The clay body and basic slip of my sculpture is often made from the same material as my black brick. The moments of sculpture that excite me most happen when I’m thinking about larger projects, like St. Laurence, and something hits me, as if the work of St. Laurence or the collections are a way to get to new ideas. Now that the structural work is happening and 2 floors are with drywall, the building feels whole in new ways. These days my journal no longer distinguishes drawings for furniture, building plans, poetry, new sculptural work or paintings. Page after page, I’m trying to solve problems as clearly as I can. It makes me want to build sculptures as buildings and roofs, walls and floors as art. I’m a total mess but I have more confidence that the pipe configuration for radiant heat and the plumber who sets it up, offers sculpture something very special and when I pause to look at my the copper, cast iron, plastic tubes and fittings, I see a sculptural world so generative, it makes me want to leave sculpture altogether and join the plumbers union.

In partnership with the @FrankieKnucklesFoundation, we are proud to bring you Soul Liberation 3: Our Third Annual Frankie Knuckles Festival and Fundraiser at Kenwood Gardens! Join us for this daylong sonic journey as we celebrate The Godfather of House Music and share the liberatory power of House music. Repost from @darrenwalker • Today, my friend @MikeBloomberg receives the highest US civilian honor: the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Addressing complex challenges like poverty and climate change requires the kind of cross-sector leadership he exemplifies. It’s great to see @POTUS recognize his impact in industry, philanthropy, and public service. I’m honored to collaborate with @BloombergDotOrg and serve on the board of @Bloomberg, the company he founded over 40 years ago. Read more at my link in bio.

It’s hard to explain the joy I feel seeing Japanese DJs spinning soul while I’m learning tea ceremony! The mash ups are bizarre and natural at the same time. Afro Mingei, my exhibition at Mori museum, has allowed me to push certain ideas around cultural transference, Mingei, and the archive further than I’ve ever had opportunity before. To ask questions about cultural purity and plurality while playing, building friendships and challenging my own sense has been so rewarding. Thank you @moriartmuseum for this great privilege. #mingei #hamadashoji #tokoname
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: SUNDAY SERVICE Sunday Service at Kenwood Gardens returns this Sunday! We are grateful to be able to continue this beloved program every month throughout the summer. Due to significantly increased demand, and in order to create the safest and most comfortable environment for expressing joy and honoring our sonic histories through movement, we are making a couple of changes to our processes and protocol. These changes are meant to enhance the visitor experience while preserving our ability to continue delivering this program for our neighbors, friends and loved ones. Starting this week, we will be requiring an RSVP on Eventbrite to enter the gardens. It’s a privilege to welcome a community of over 600 people to the gardens for this celebration of House music each month. This modest request, which takes just a couple of minutes, will allow us to better ensure the safety, comfort and fellowship that takes place in the gardens. It has also been a tremendous honor to keep Sunday Service accessible to our community, and we want to continue the spirit of this openness. With that said, please note that it takes a significant investment to staff, clean, and preserve our spaces – in addition to supporting the artists who lead these programs. We are kindly asking that all Sunday Service participants consider making a $10 donation to support the continuation of this programming. Your collective support helps us create and maintain a space full of joy and liberatory potential. We thank you in advance for your understanding and continued support of this program. Please RSVP to join us for the next Sunday Service at the link in our bio!
