This woman. 💓 she captures how life feels and puts it on the page and then on our screens. And we all feel it- whatever it @abimorgan9 wants us to feel. ‘Eric’ on Netflix is her latest creation – starring my fave Gaby Hoffman and Benedict Cumberbatch. But you might know and love her for The Split, Suffragette, The Iron Lady, The Hour – I could go on. She is prolific. For me? It’s all about her harrowing and love-filled highly personal book about how hard her last few years have been: This is not a Pity Memoir. I read it in one breath almost – that’s how it felt. When it came out we spoke on @bbcwomanshour – where we first met and made a strong bond 10 years earlier. This week, during my third week at @bbctodayprogramme – I was so thrilled to be reunited once more and talk New York, the eighties, love and loss. Catch back up on @bbcsounds if you fancy- search for Thursday’s programme. She’s thriving despite what life just chucked at her. TBH whatever Abi’s making, I’m all here for it. #eric #women #writers #fighters

#EmmaBarnett was at home with her two children, about to put them to bed, when Rishi Sunak stood outside number 10, in the pouring rain, and announced a general election. The nation was surprised, but Barnett was not. After a decade of turbulence that has seen her report on news concerning Donald Trump, Brexit, a prorogation of parliament, three prime ministers in quick succession, the death of the Queen, the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East and a global pandemic, it felt like one more thing to add to “the list”. “I actually just sat there and thought: ‘huh, that’s going to be an interesting shift tomorrow,’” she recalls. It also happened to be her first week on the UK’s most popular breakfast news radio show: The Today Programme on BBC Radio 4. At the link in our bio, we caught up with the broadcaster and author ahead of the general election. Interview by @mcchappet Acting Deputy Editor @hels_lee EIC @lydiasmag

Celine Dion’s illness has taken her ability to perform, sing and dance – which is all she has known of herself. I may not have been an admirer of her music before, but I am now a fully signed up member of the Celine Dion “fighting her way back” fan club, writes Emma Barnett. “Illnesses are thieves. Some steal all of you, or take little bits over time. Others are sudden, swift and leave you with nothing to work with. “I know this through my experiences of living with endometriosis and adenomyosis. Bluntly speaking, my health has been poor over the last nine months. Long stints of extraordinary constant pain and hormone imbalances have made for very trying times indeed. And as fellow endo warrior and literary titan Hilary Mantel used to warn, the medicines prescribed to “help” me, have all made me worse. “It’s been bleak. My health has declined at the same time as I’m trying to parent the two children we fought to have and starting back at work, with a new job to learn, too.” “What I have learned is that no matter your financial situation and ability to hire the best medical professionals around, you cannot will yourself out of something chronic and progressive. No matter how stoic or strong you think you are. Succumbing isn’t weak. It’s life and you are ill. “Instead, you have to learn to live around your illness.” ⬆️ Read more of @emmabarnett’s latest column at the link in @theipaper’s bio. Covent Garden. One of those London neighbourhoods I wanted to know and understand when I was a child living in Manchester and used to very occasionally visit the capital as a tourist. There was theatre, flowers, delicious food, unique street entertainment and a market. I wanted in. Much may have changed in this area and many others in the near 20 years I’ve now lived in London, but that’s city life. The only constant, is change. Which is why I believe I’ll always remain an urban dweller. But some things are just the same as they were when I first walked these cobbled streets all those years ago. We loved putting this one together. Covent Garden has a lot of fabulous things to colour in and learn about. Plus I never could have predicted pre children that my most used annual pass/membership for two years running would be to the epic London Transport Museum – in heart of Covent Garden. Who knew 🤷♀️?! Colour In… Covent Garden just dropped on our @colouryourstreets website and VERY excitingly – will also be on sale shortly in the very magnificent @ltmuseum shop. #coventgarden #coventgardenmarket #coventgardenlondon #colouring #newbook #colour #market #london #screenfreekids #screenfree #londontransportmuseum 🌹 🌺 🌷
