Time to make the billionaires pay up. According to a new report, if the world’s 3,000 billionaires had to pay a minimum amount of tax each year, equal to 2% of their wealth, global tax revenues would be up to $380 billion higher. Governments around the world could use that money to tackle to inequality, poverty and the cost of living. What do you reckon Clive, Gina, Rupert? You in? ✋
In 2003 Labor opposed giving a $50,000 pay rise to the then Governor General and spoke in support of low paid workers. Where are Labor now? In a cost of living crisis, giving the Governor General a $200k pay rise in the same week that they voted against our bill to break up the supermarket duopoly, which would end price gouging in supermarkets, is pretty rough. People can’t afford to put food on the table. They can’t afford rent. Medicine. Basic things they need to live. Until all low paid workers get a 43% pay rise, the Governor General shouldn’t either. 🔥 @larissawaters
The Environment Minister has just approved a massive new Gina Rinehart gas project in Queensland, which will run until 2080, well after Labor says Australia will be at net zero emissions. It’s no wonder people are increasingly disappointed in Labor – approving 150 gas wells on top of the Great Artesian Basin is hardly the climate action people thought they were voting for.
The Government wants to increase the Governor-General’s salary from $495k to $709k. Can’t believe I have to say this (in a cost-of-living crisis) but a $200k pay rise for the Governor-General is not a good look. Until all low paid workers (mostly women!) get a 43% pay rise, the General-General shouldn’t either.
How can the government suggest a 43% pay rise for the Governor-General – regardless of the person currently filling the role – when we are still drastically underpaying our lowest paid workers? The Greens cannot support this increase to the GG salary, any more than we support the overpayment of any other CEO, executive, or senior public servant, especially not during a cost of living crisis. And especially not while the lowest paid women in our workforce continue to be underpaid and undervalued.

Nine gas projects. Five coal projects. That’s how many fossil fuel projects have been approved since the Albanese Government came to office. The International Energy Agency has said no new coal, oil and gas projects can be built in order to reach net zero by 2050. But Labor care more about lining the pockets of billionaires like Gina Rinehart and the fossil fuel CEOs.

The Greens remain ready to work towards genuine electoral reform. The question is; will Labor do a dirty deal with the Liberal Party so they can both keep the donations rolling in from coal and gas?
Our environmental laws are broken, and Labor promised to fix them but aren’t! Without a climate trigger, the laws do nothing to protect the environment from climate wrecking coal and gas, and without a ban on native forest logging, precious habitat continues to fall. Any environment law that doesn’t consider climate pollution or protect native forests is clearly not worth the paper it’s printed on.
A ‘build to rent’ plan that gives developers access to tax concessions from the government if they build private rental apartments – where 90% can be completely unaffordable – will not fix the housing crisis. And neither will the 10% with a laughable definition of affordability. In return for the Greens support for Build to Rent we want to see changes to ensure that 100% of the apartments are actually affordable, by mandating that any developer who wants access to the tax handout must: 🏠Impose a rent cap of 2% every 2 years 🏠Define “affordable” as 25% of household income or 70% of market rate, whichever is lower 🏠Increase the minimum lease period to 5 years
Labor’s response to the Senate inquiry on universal access to reproductive healthcare is now TEN MONTHS OVERDUE. Women and pregnant people should not be forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to access basic healthcare – which abortion is. The situation in Victoria is the same in my home state of Queensland and across the country. Too many barriers remain for people experiencing an unintended pregnancy & the Greens continue to call for zero out of pocket costs for abortion, whether medical or surgical.
An absolute joy to have @mandy.4.richmond pop by my office in Parliament House – looking forward to seeing her elected as the Member for Richmond so we can have her in this place far more often! Mandy only needs a 1.8% increase to win in Richmond, one of our most winnable lower house seats, and I for one can’t wait to have her voice in parliament.
✊ @dorinda_cox: For First Nations Justice to be delivered, we must tell the truth. That’s why the Greens will introduce a Bill to establish a Truth and Justice Commission. The misinformation peddled during the referendum campaign showed the urgent need for truth-telling. To move forward, we must be honest about the violence and dispossession at the heart of this country’s history. “The work we do now must be grounded in our self determination to chart our pathway forward to achieve better outcomes for First Nations people, communities and our collective futures” #thetimeisnow

Every day Labor refuses to phase out these unfair tax handouts is another day that a potential first home buyer gets screwed over at an auction by a property investor. Labor will spend $165 billion on negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount for residential property investors over the next 10 years unless they make changes now. Labor has a chance to work with the Greens to phase out these unfair tax handouts, and finally give an entire generation some hope that they might one day be able to buy a home.
Women and girls are the fastest growing group of people being imprisoned, globally. Those being criminalised are typically marginalised people experiencing violence, unemployment, poverty, mental health issues and homelessness. Addressing inequity and the needs of our communities – particularly over-criminalised First Nations women – must be a priority. And overall, if we want to improve the lives of women inside, we must hear from incarcerated women and actual listen to them! Thank you to the incredible women who brought their stories to Parliament House today, and to @senatorthorpe, Senator Fatima Payman and @bridget.archer for hosting the Truth Telling Yarns: Women in Prisons event.

I met with Fiona and Dini from Housing for the Aged Action Group, as well as Vanessa and Helen who shared their experiences finding housing as older women. Our meeting was both devastating and inspiring, and the Greens fully support their calls for more affordable and public housing, and better management and maintenance of existing stock. There’s no point putting women and older people into homes that aren’t fit for climate change when that is exactly the group of people most impacted by drastic weather changes. My Greens colleague @mchandlermather also announced this week that we want to see the definition of affordable changed so that rent will be either 25% of a tenant’s income or 70% of market rate – whichever is lower. This policy would go a long way towards improving the rising risk of homelessness amongst older women.
