Part II – The Americans.
Earleen (74), Dubois WY
The Outlaw Saloon located in a small town called Dubois, Wyoming, appears closed, but appearances can be deceiving. The creaking wooden floor makes it impossible to walk in silently, nevertheless nobody looks up. Swirling dust and cigarette smoke dim the colors, and if nobody is talking, it almost feels serene.
After a drink or two and staring shamelessly, my eyes fall upon a lady in between a row of men at the bar. Her short, wispy hair is sticking out from underneath her faded cap. Her bright blue eyes are fixated by the running horses on the big television screen above the bar.
“In my early days, I used to do chariot racing. You stand in a chariot behind a group of horses and then you run like hell.” In the first instance, she tried not to fall out of the chariot, but quickly she discovered that she was talented. Pretty soon she figured out how to rule – mentally and physically – the male-dominated horseracing world. “I’ve won a couple of races”, she modestly says.
