According to @saoirsemonicajackson, the people of her hometown in Derry do not mince their words. #Colbert #DerryGirls

Saoirse-Monica Jackson is high energy, warm and quick witted when we meet her for her Cosmopolitan UK digital cover shoot. She’s been up since 4am to get from her Liverpool home to set, but makes sure to introduce herself to everyone before we settle to chat. Her overstuffed tote bag threatens to spill: “I’ve so many extra sets of knickers in here, just in case. It’s twisted what I’ll shove in here. You don’t wanna see this side of me.” Camaraderie and charm comes easily to her, and it’s easy to see why, after bursting onto our screens as schoolgirl Erin in Derry Girls, the world fell in love. For Cosmopolitan’s latest digital cover story, and our Apple News and Cosmo app summer special mini-mag cover feature, the actor opens up about challenging typecasting, her new Netflix show The Decameron, your thirties as the ‘doing years’, and what’s next (hint: you won’t expect it). Head to the link in bio for the cover story, while subscribers can read the entire summer special mini-mag via the Cosmo app. Photographer: @melony.lemon Acting Deputy Editor: @zoe_shenton Art Editor: @jaimesclee Fashion Editor: @maddyalford Interview: @annagranola Entertainment Editor: @christobelhastings Make Up: @amanda.grossman Hair: @kenorourke1 Nails: @iramshelton Bookings Editor: @sophie_leen & Bev Croucher Movement Co-ordinator: @liam_jhill Fashion Assistant: @harneyyy @thomothestylist

Much like her “Derry Girls” character, @saoirsemonicajackson grew up between Derry, with a load of aunts, uncles, siblings, and cousins constantly streaming in and out of the family home, and, across the border, the fishing village of Greencastle in County Donegal, Ireland, where her parents ran a local inn in the early aughts. “The only way to be noticed by adults was by being funny,” she says. “You can look at that in two ways: character building or neglect.” She jokes. She described being bullied in the last couple years of Catholic school similarly: “That’s why I’m so funny.” Tap the link in bio for more on what’s next for the actress. “I was living my Lizzie McGuire dream!” 🌟 Saoirse-Monica Jackson reminisces on her moped adventures shooting The Decameron in Italy 🛵
“I’d barely any set experience and I was suddenly leading a show,” Saoirse-Monica Jackson says, as she recalls landing her breakout role as the bolshy schoolgirl Erin Quinn in Derry Girls. “I was in my early 20s, growing as a person. It taught me a lot as an actor and a human being.” Yet following the cultural phenomenon, insecurities began to emerge. “I couldn’t get seen for parts my own age. I thought, ‘am I going to miss telling this part of my life’s story?’” She feared Erin’s slapstick comedy would limit her, and get her typecast. “You never get to see young women do this kind of performance… those parts don’t even really exist, as I was repeatedly told.” But with a new Netflix show on the way – The Decameron, described as ‘Lord of the Flies meets Love Island’ – and the gritty BBC drama she’s always dreamed of, Saoirse-Monica is just getting started. “My career remains chequered and I’ve grown to love that,” she says. “I’m able to see the privilege of being able to show such stretch. I’m able to do work like Erin, and it’s work that I think is courageous, more ambitious, and cool.” For Cosmopolitan’s latest digital cover story, the actor opens up about seeing your thirties as the ‘doing years’, defying misconceptions and the friendships that have blossomed along the way.
