When I pulled over to pee behind my truck I hid by the exhaust pipe, and it incidentally burnt my back with its hot exhaust fumes. The irony wasn’t totally lost. Baloo and I are on Blue Mesa (my fav middle of nowhere location in Colorado) through an eon-long series of construction traffic stops and Lauren Boebert’s robots just called me so I curiously listened to all 19 of the survey questions while simultaneously reading about how the richest man on planet Earth just purchased our seemingly most democratic media platform and I think I’m ready to be abducted by aliens. But…
Hey…
I’ll be the last woman standing. I love this luscious fucked-up space rock. #dodgeball #thisismybrainonpodcasts #goodlucktousall
Throw back to that time I thought I was doing some meaningful mourning-the-loss-of-protected-land performance art but really just made two very sweet climbers feel uncomfortable on their summit moment. The take away here is following through on your wackiest of ideas is important even tho nothing ever really turns out the way you envision it, but perhaps its best to also pack homemade cookies for anyone’s day you make extremely awkward along the way 😜😜😜 [whoever you two are, I owe you some cookies]

Words that are sinking in deeply with me right now, by Wendell Berry.
“We have lived by the assumption that what was good for us would be good for the world. And this has been based on the even flimsier assumption that we could know with any certainty what was good even for us. We have fulfilled the danger of this by making our personal pride and greed the standard of our behavior toward the world – to the incalculable disadvantage of the world and every living thing in it. And now, perhaps very close to too late, our great error has become clear. It is not only our own creativity – our own capacity for life – that is stifled by our arrogant assumption; the creation itself is stifled.
We have been wrong. We must change our lives, so that it will be possible to live by the contrary assumption that what is good for the world will be good for us. And that requires that we make the effort to know the world and to learn what is good for it. We must learn to cooperate in its processes, and to yield to its limits. But even more important, we must learn to acknowledge that the creation is full of mystery; we will never entirely understand it. We must abandon arrogance and stand in awe. We must recover the sense of the majesty of creation, and the ability to be worshipful in its presence. For I do not doubt that it is only on the condition of humility and reverence before the world that our species will be able to remain in it.” #thisismybrainonnature #sonyartisan @renan_ozturk
*CALL FOR SUPPORT* When Maria and her cousins flagged me down off the highway, it was a bit to their disappointment that I was not indeed the Red Cross who they’d been waiting for, for days. The land in their community outside Medanales, NM had just been washed out under their feet after the Rio Chama jumped its banks and completely flooded the area. That arroyo you see in these photos? It wasn’t there before. It was land, with soil and grass. Trailers were moved, cars burried or taken down river, homes are teetering on the edge. “This has been a wake up call,” Maria said. “This kind of flooding hasn’t happened in decades but will probably be happening more. And what we’ve realized most is it’s pretty much up to us to take care of this situation ourselves, for our families and each other, at the moment. Not a lot of help has come yet.” Maria, myself, Jacob and Matthew spent the better part of the afternoon digging out access to their drinking water well valves, turning it off to prevent water loss and contaminated back flooding. They are trying to restore drinking water access for Maria’s mom across the new arroyo. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the laughter and shit talking and joy was all time, and it was such a great day for new friendships. I do believe the government of New Mexico is indeed mobilizing a plan, as there’s a lot of flooding emergencies around the whole state, so there will be some action. But if you are compelled, immediate support is needed. I’m collecting funds (please DM me for info) and sending every dollar directly to Maria’s family. If you have experience or resources in a greater capacity to help with cleanup and rebuild, DM me and I can put you in touch with the right people. ♥️

Moving through the jungle was a veritable circus of science and observation, taught not only by @dr_bruce_means and @fuconei, our Venezuelan biologist and Tepui expert, but also our ecology-trained Guyanese leaders like Wally and the dozens of Akawaio guides who charted our way every step. Mornings and nights were spent peeking under leaves, scampering into ravines, turning over logs, following chirps and rustling in the bushes. And when anything was discovered, a whooping shout to draw in anyone else curious to see what was seen. This journey was as much about new species to science and the first ascent of a new wall as it was about strengthening our inner curiosity for life itself, and telling that story to share with others. Hope you get to check out our new film The Last Tepui on @disneyplus @natgeotv !!!
Since its founding in 2010, @girltrek has mobilized over one million Black women and girls to walk as a demonstration of collective hope and healing. Everything I thought I knew about how “social change” worked was shattered when I got to understand their mission, walk with them – many now forever friends – in the streets for 100 miles, and witness what true community care really looked like. While the movement grows, it needs support to continue widening its circle and making it possible for more to participate. Saturday feels like a great day to support spaces of healing, organized by Black women, for Black women. Link in bio to donate!

We couldn’t decide if we were re-shooting our high school yearbook photos or the soon-to-drop album cover, but what we did decide was that NYC is a very fun place to play : ) Huge congrats to the leaders of @girltrek for the incredible work they do, recently hiring and training almost 100 community organizers to further build the movement. @vanessatreks @morgantreks I can’t wait to see what unfolds in the future 💙💙 #sonyartisan #alpha1

A few weeks ago a group of friends very dear to my heart completed a little mission, skiing a route across a part of the interior highlands of Iceland. It was cold, and adventurous, and call for celebration when everyone crossed the finish line. Cheers to @tincupwhiskey for being a part of that celebration. Story and film to come soon of this 10 year journey!
