Adi Granov Instagram - Someone recently asked if I was on steroids. Yes, I use steroids to paint and AI to lift weights! GTFOH! Sorry to disappoint, it's all just pure hard work and slow progress with questionable benefits. But life is about nothing if not struggle and slow marching towards oblivion. BTW, in this image you can see where the airbrushed base ends and paintbrush rendering takes over. I don't mask and let the airbrush overspray and then sharpen and render with a brush. I prefer that more organic and unified look to precise masking.

Adi Granov Instagram - Testing my new Nikon D850 for shooting artwork. 60mm Micro lens and strobe lights, same setup as with the old D7100. The difference in the final capture is subtle, as was to be expected as I already had a good setup, but the image is larger and the detail at full size crisper. It won't make a huge difference at comic book size printing, but it will for larger than life size uses. The camera is also quite a bit easier to set up and captures better images with less hassle. Not entirely sure why that is yet. The depth of colour and light bounce through the paint is excellent, which is my main concern trying to capture the effects of glazed layers.
Adi Granov Instagram - Update: Accounting sorted it out in no time after 6 months of incompetence and disrespect from the editor Robert Redman. He messed up the process, didn't give me any info I needed, didn't acknowledge receipt of my work and didn't inform me that it was being published. Due to his actions accounting weren't even aware of a problem, but he refused to give me any further contact, a former employee did it on Facebook. As soon as I reached them, it was sorted. I wrote an article for @imaginefxmagazine last year which was published in their January issue. They still haven't paid. The art director who commissioned the work never acknowledged the receipt of the work, never informed me that it was accepted and published, didn't send me the PO number or inform me that I could invoice. It was only when someone on my social media alerted me to the article being published that I found out and had to chase, for him then to display complete ignorance of their own system and payment processes. Imagine FX/Future are now months beyond the payment terms in their own contract, and this is not counting the four months before I was finally given the PO number. All in, it's now about five months overdue. The art director's constant line is that it's not his job to get me paid, only to sign off on the work, even though their own paperwork makes him my one and only contact, but he completely ignores my requests for contact information for anyone whose job it is to sort it. It's only £200 and I will neither starve nor lose sleep over the money alone, but as a matter of principle I will also not let it go. Further more, it's really a caution to anyone who might want to do work for them as if they can be so unprofessional over such a small amount to an artist who doesn't need this work, I fear to think what they might be like towards those afraid to upset them. This isn't something requiring sympathy. I certainly don't feel bad about it, just irritated by this useless person and the lack of professionalism. I post about this because their unprofessional practices need to be known. I won't do any more work for them or support any of their magazines.

Adi Granov Instagram - Lots of questions about my method. It's all entirely acrylic paint on watercolour board. On the left is the "grisaille" greyscale underpainting where all of the form is figured out. This still exists in the colour version, it provides all of the volume, so they are not separate processes, just stages of the same thing. None of the image on the left is lost, it's all there under the colour. If I was to finish a piece in greyscale I would take it further, but even this is too far, as things such as specular highlights weren't necessary until the colour (strictly speaking about the process), however, I wanted to indicate them in order to make sure it was all working as intended. These images are much larger than the physical panting, so you can see all of the brush strokes which in reality just form a texture, but hopefully they explain a bit more the way I apply paint and that the "blending" effect is created by overlaying brush strokes, not actual blending of wet into wet. This is because I prefer the life in the strokes to the smooth blends, but I also get pleasure in achieving something the hard way. In all honesty, it's really difficult to explain my process in simple terms. It's something developed over at least 30 years of experimentation as I've never been able to find an existing lesson or tutorial on how to achieve the things I wanted to achieve. The closest is the Flemish style of oil painting, especially Vermeer, but there is very little actual evidence of his process, it's all based on opinion and reverse engineering. However, it is what really inspired what I do now, built on my previous fascination with Sorayama's technique, built upon my desire for very sculptural form in my paintings.

Some people have asked me "Why?" and honestly, it's not even an ego thing, it's a melancholic homage to my younger self. Life wasn't easy back then and looking back on it now I have a kind of respect for being able to create this art which now, in retrospect, has been quite influential. Adi Granov Instagram - I've mentioned before about glazing in acrylics and separating layers with acrylic medium to build up glazes of colour and the effect the light has bouncing through them. My art responds a lot to changing light as it penetrates all of the layers and reflects all the way down from the grisaille underneath. It's a process I really like and it results in original art that is quite alive. This is also why I photograph it as I can play around with light to capture some of that life instead of letting the scanner flatten it. Adi Granov Instagram - Trying out some new varnish. Satin this time as a mid point between gloss and matt. Varnish doesn't just protect the art, it also provides a unified surface as various layers and types of paint leave it uneven. But the thing I like the most is that it heightens the vibrance and contrast, almost as if doing an adjustment digitally, but in real life. Painting never feels complete until I seal and varnish it. BTW, in this image you can see where the airbrushed base ends and paintbrush rendering takes over. I don't mask and let the airbrush overspray and then sharpen and render with a brush. I prefer that more organic and unified look to precise masking.

The difference in the final capture is subtle, as was to be expected as I already had a good setup, but the image is larger and the detail at full size crisper. It won't make a huge difference at comic book size printing, but it will for larger than life size uses. The camera is also quite a bit easier to set up and captures better images with less hassle. Not entirely sure why that is yet. The depth of colour and light bounce through the paint is excellent, which is my main concern trying to capture the effects of glazed layers.

He messed up the process, didn't give me any info I needed, didn't acknowledge receipt of my work and didn't inform me that it was being published. Due to his actions accounting weren't even aware of a problem, but he refused to give me any further contact, a former employee did it on Facebook. As soon as I reached them, it was sorted. I wrote an article for @imaginefxmagazine last year which was published in their January issue. They still haven't paid. The art director who commissioned the work never acknowledged the receipt of the work, never informed me that it was accepted and published, didn't send me the PO number or inform me that I could invoice. It was only when someone on my social media alerted me to the article being published that I found out and had to chase, for him then to display complete ignorance of their own system and payment processes. Imagine FX/Future are now months beyond the payment terms in their own contract, and this is not counting the four months before I was finally given the PO number. All in, it's now about five months overdue. The art director's constant line is that it's not his job to get me paid, only to sign off on the work, even though their own paperwork makes him my one and only contact, but he completely ignores my requests for contact information for anyone whose job it is to sort it. It's only £200 and I will neither starve nor lose sleep over the money alone, but as a matter of principle I will also not let it go. Further more, it's really a caution to anyone who might want to do work for them as if they can be so unprofessional over such a small amount to an artist who doesn't need this work, I fear to think what they might be like towards those afraid to upset them. This isn't something requiring sympathy. I certainly don't feel bad about it, just irritated by this useless person and the lack of professionalism. I post about this because their unprofessional practices need to be known. I won't do any more work for them or support any of their magazines.

On the left is the "grisaille" greyscale underpainting where all of the form is figured out. This still exists in the colour version, it provides all of the volume, so they are not separate processes, just stages of the same thing. None of the image on the left is lost, it's all there under the colour. If I was to finish a piece in greyscale I would take it further, but even this is too far, as things such as specular highlights weren't necessary until the colour (strictly speaking about the process), however, I wanted to indicate them in order to make sure it was all working as intended. These images are much larger than the physical panting, so you can see all of the brush strokes which in reality just form a texture, but hopefully they explain a bit more the way I apply paint and that the "blending" effect is created by overlaying brush strokes, not actual blending of wet into wet. This is because I prefer the life in the strokes to the smooth blends, but I also get pleasure in achieving something the hard way. In all honesty, it's really difficult to explain my process in simple terms. It's something developed over at least 30 years of experimentation as I've never been able to find an existing lesson or tutorial on how to achieve the things I wanted to achieve. The closest is the Flemish style of oil painting, especially Vermeer, but there is very little actual evidence of his process, it's all based on opinion and reverse engineering. However, it is what really inspired what I do now, built on my previous fascination with Sorayama's technique, built upon my desire for very sculptural form in my paintings.

Caption : X-Men 01 SDCC Exclusive Variant Cover In collaboration with @trinitycomics1 this is the virgin variant of our SDCC cover So there is kind of a genuine reason for this colour variation as I did the yellow and this one as colour comps to match each character and it was a tossup which I would end up painting traditionally. The yellow won out narrowly, but I still like this one quite a bit too, so when we were deciding on the virgin variant, it was an easy decision. #xmen #psylocke #magik #marvel #adigranov

Varnish doesn't just protect the art, it also provides a unified surface as various layers and types of paint leave it uneven. But the thing I like the most is that it heightens the vibrance and contrast, almost as if doing an adjustment digitally, but in real life. Painting never feels complete until I seal and varnish it.
