I am wearing, a beautiful gray twill Chanel jacket with brass buttons and four pockets, designed just for me by Karl Lagerfeld. It was the second jacket he made for me in the couture, and at that time, M.Pacquito was chief of tailoring. My turtleneck is English cotton, and my officer trousers with the contrast stripe are from Welsh & Jefferies, Savile Row. It is where the English Royals go for military dress. I have many trousers like this in every conceivable color and contrast, best ones, evening dress, with big gold braid. The shoes, inspired by
a pair of 1930s ski boots in the Hermès archives, Paris. I loved them so much, simply because they had red shoelaces,and still have them in my Paris archives closets in North Carolina.
That was when I felt like life was all sunshine, and very few dark clouds. I did make it into the Intrenational Best-Dressed Hall of Fame. André Leon Talley Instagram - The most camp and completely over-the-top photo organized by the late Tony Snowdon, who died at the age of 86 in 2017. We were in Rome for Tina Brown's Vanity Fair, to do the entire Fendi sisters, the legendary fur dynasty in 1987. There were five competitive sisters at that time. And we had to make them laugh to break up the seriousness of it all.
Snowdon came from London and he was one of the best photographers. Totally polite and correct. He was
married to Queen Elizabeth II's sister Princess Margaret. Snowdon is featured in series 2 of The Crown.
We were great friends and bonded immediately. I loved working with Tony because he always insisted on proper lunch, with a set table and polished silver at his home. He suddenly felt the camp moment to lighten the shoot and thrust himself and me in these lynx coats to the ground. Today, this would not be possible.

Roy Strong, landscape architect, director of the V&A museum in London, and the director of the National Portrait Gallery, wrote of his friend Snowdon, in his diaries: Scenes and Apparitions. André Leon Talley Instagram - It’s Kaiser Karl (Lagerfeld) and Andre (the tall skinny beanstalk (Leon Talley) in 1977, at the legendary wedding ball of the late @ysl muse, Loulou de la Falaise, to Thadee Klossowski. Paris, on the ile du bois, a special evening where I flew over to Paris, and Karl and I went together. We were on the official list of invited guests sent out by the house of YSL. Karl's love of his life, the late Jacques de Bascher was not invited. He caused the complex rupture of friendship between Karl and Yves. He dangled his dazzling sexual chemistry on a tightrope in front of Yves; and Karl seemed amused by it all.
Lagerfeld and I were in our second year of friendship. When we met, through Andy Warhol, in May , 1975, we got on like fireworks in a spectacular display. Lagerfeld was way ahead of everyone, even then, we climbed into
a high Range Rover as a luxury sedan to go to the ball, which lasted until dawn. Lagerfeld, resplendent and I, in a hand me down custom made Halston white dinner jacket, and a cotton kerchief carrying my evening stuff, ( a comb and a mini camera) to catch the likes of Bianca Jagger , in a Zandra Rhodes crinoline, where Yves
stood her against a wall and decorated with fresh palm fronds, or where I missed all the decadence, going on, on the outer edges (drugs, sexual dalliances! hetero and homo). I flew over coach to Paris, and stayed in
the late Joel LeBon's flat where Picasso once lived. Tina Chow, came over for the wedding , wearing her favorite Fortuny silk dresses wrapped around her throat as a muffler to the gay Club Sept. What was so wonderful about going out with Lagerfeld in 1977: he was a rising star in the fashion galaxy, designing for Chloe, the luxury ready-to-wear French house and Fendi. I was on a fast track , speed dial, tutorial learning everything from Karl about Eighteenth century France: style, art,
design, fashion, arts de vivre. Everything about Karl was exceptional, and elegant. There was nothing seedy, or vulgar, nothing perverse, then or ever, during our near four decades of friendship.

André Leon Talley Instagram - ALL-IN: I was right there, having coined the word the Ultra-ettes in Interview social column after I arrived in New York, in 1974, the year Halston begins his meteoric rise and becomes the Sun King of American fashion, by the time, he sells his Paul Rudolph townhouse and Montauk, and moves to the West Coast, Icarus's gilded wings has been scorched by bad behavior, bad choices, and an ego that matched the heights of mountains in the Himalayas. Halston gave me his buff and sand toned ultrasuede jackets, (about 6) which I wore as uniforms. Literally, you could throw them in washing machine and dryer and have a jacket that was impeccable. He also gave me my first aviator sunglasses in tortoise, and his bespoke white smoking dinner jackets. We were close, but not close enough, nor did he ever hit on me, or I him. A tete a tete dinner for two,would be served on a low coffee table with those long gray sofas, in the living room. Menu: chilled Russian vodka, the best caviar, on ice, a baked potato for each of us, all served on elegant glassware and crystal. Oh, of course, neat pyramids of cocaine was there as well as Peretti original candlesticks shaped from bones. The atmosphere was seductive. I feared loosing my job therefore, pushing the pyramids of fresh coke, and opting for caviar, endless runs to the kitchen oven to get another baked potato and lemon . We managed to have conversations. Halston had the self-imposed style of a Cary Grant and the dramatics of Vincent Prince, all combined into one. There are no long, long tapered fingers like the Halston's . His generosity stretched even to gifting me with his favorite Chinese chest, from his first apartment that was left in his garage. I should have kept that, piece of furniture, but I passed it on to a friend, upon moving to Paris in 1978.

André Leon Talley Instagram - Patrick Hourcade, the former creative director of French Vogue and an expert in 18th-century art, is a man of integrity, decency, wicked humor, and refinement.

He was also a most unlikely best friend to Karl Lagerfeld. They met in 1976, when Hourcade was at the apex of his career as a French fashion journalist.

In his beautiful and elegant new book, Karl: No Regrets, he peels back the opulent pomp to expose the many layers of complex and often cruel forms of manipulation that Karl Lagerfeld survived on until he died, in February of 2019. Hourcade’s book is part epistle, part memoir, and slithers quickly and with efficient speed in minimal chapters.

For 25 years, Hourcade was Lagerfeld’s close male friend, his factotum in every aspect of the self-invented fairy tale. Hourcade and Lagerfeld bonded over their obsession with 18th-century antiques, and together, using Lagerfeld’s always open checkbook, they built magnificent collections at the great designer’s homes—Grand-Champ, a château in Brittany; Hotel Pozzo di Borgo, in Paris; and La Vigie, a villa on the French Riviera.

Hourcade’s book is lavishly illustrated with people and places that were integral to the fairy tale, the gilded rooms with wall-to-wall paintings and Versailles rugs, and the incredible decorated beds.

This book is essential reading for those who want to know the real Lagerfeld, the one who fell out with so many people he loved, including the Sotheby’s France head Laure de Beauvau-Craon; Gilles Dufour, his right-hand man at Chanel; Inès de la Fressange; and Hourcade.

Lagerfeld was generous to all of his friends—until he turned on them. For the last 20 years of his life, Lagerfeld dismissed Hourcade as “a cheat and a liar,” apparently because, in some mysterious way, he considered himself jilted.

He arrived with matching sets of Vuitton cases, filled with matching sets of tone-on-tone Rive Gauche shirts and custom-made linen trousers. Manolo is the most elegant man I know. He could have been an interior architect, a set designer, as well as shoe king. He has designed beautiful wrought iron furniture, that he cast in his beautiful town, Bath, England.
Manolo has a marvelous house on the Crescent in the historical city of Bath. We used to spend glorious weekends in his Luchino Visconti rooms, he decorated on his own, with roaring fires watching Visconti films before there were cable boxes. He had all Visconti and Bertolucci films in his library. My favorite pastime, was to walk into town to the bookstore and come home, and watch Manolo bake a cake in his AGA oven. The house had all the style of those great English homes you see where cozy means really cozy, yet it is grand. Oh, did we laugh, just the two of us. My best country house weekends were spent with Manolo in the Eighties, just the two of us.

I once went to London and spent an entire week, reading to him, the entire works of Camille Paglia: Sexual Personae and Sex, Art, and American culture. Out Loud. The main purpose of my trip was to sit by his bed, every day from eleven a.m. to four p.m. reading out loud, in a clinic where he was convalescing after surgery. We had the best time, as he lay in bed and I sat there, every day having very little food and reading out loud from Paglia’s great essays. I met Bianca Jagger through him, she has all his great designs from decades in storage. Manolo Blahnik's suits from Anderson and Sheppard are the most dandy, pure dandy suits ever ordered. His female clients will have the pleasure of shopping in a space that is beyond the next level: unabashed luxury, (including full time bar and service), and the genius of Blahnik's creative exuberance in everything from flats to the highest heels possible. The new store located at 717 Madison Avenue has the old world quiet elegance of a couture salon, decorated with mid-century opaque chandeliers, and beautifully hand applied
vertical stripes of greige and fawn. It is the largest Blahnik shoe store in the world. The opening this week in New York was a virtual blast of Blahnik's two favorite New York personalities: designer Issac Mizrahi, and singer and actor and comedienne Sandra Berhnard. They performed at the famous Carlyle Hotel, in a cabaret with full orchestra. It was by virtual invitation; Manolo spoke briefly from London, the hostess was his neice Christina, also in London. André Leon Talley Instagram - True friends to the end: Julia Reed, on my lap, in her signature zebra-linen @manoloblahnik stilettos and yours truly - with a shaved head and a @tomford animal-stenciled caftan at the McCormick Book Inn, Greenville, Mississippi, in 2004.
Julia Reed was the @voguemagazine political editor, writer and my dear friend. Her estate goes up for sale at Neal Auction Company, on February 5-7 in New Orleans. Proceeds from the sale of Julia's fine home furnishings and antiques will benefit her newly formed Julia Evans Reed Charitable Trust: benefitting causes of education, decent housing, victims of domestic violence, nutrition education, in her native Mississippi.
I was the man-of-honor at Julia's wedding in May, 2003 at her parent's home, in Greenville. Julia had no bridesmaids. We were both from the Jim Crow south, she from the right side of white affluence; I from the other side of aspiration and civil rights equity, the black south of centuries of systemic inequity. Somehow, Julia and I bonded like surrogate siblings.
We went to countless fittings for her wedding dress and trousseau from Carolina Herrera. On the day of the wedding, as Julia entered into her pale faience green watteau-back style long dress with train, I was in the room. The lights went out. Someone blew a fuse and luckily we had three cans of hair spray. I told the hairdresser to get on a little step ladder. "Higher, Higher, get it up to the chandelier." I barked and barked, intimidating this very wonderful, local hairdresser. I just wanted a bombé helmet; a modern day, Regency rococo upswept of natural hair.
Julia and I were wild at Vogue. One of my fondest memories is of her holding full on readings out loud from Joan Juliet Bucks novel: The Only Place to BE. She would gather editors in her small office, seated in a circle around her desk at the end of a long day, and give the most illuminating audio readings of the controversial novel, when it was first published.
Julia was famous for her southern style entertaining: one of the best, a bucket of Popeye’s fried chicken, served in a stunning antique Imari bowl, could turn a dinner party from a flop to a success! #thechiffontrenches

I broke down and I shed tears of rejoicing. I am crying as I write this. Finally: we have an Inaugural that speaks
volumes of style and dignity and class. And most of all the deepest notion of Grace, in every moment.
It all starts with the ladies. Every single lady was on their best and highest heel. Lets start with the former FLOTUS-cluster: Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton. And then the gaggle of beautiful young Harris- family members, and Biden grandchildren resplendent in
gloves and solid colors of coats. It was even a high moment for Amy Klobouchar in a mustard cloth coat.

Well, the historical Vice-President Kamala Harris, in splendid , and regal purple single-breasted coat and dress by @christopherjohnrogers a flag pin, and a simple pearl necklace. Dr. Jill Biden, ever elegant in her tone on tone gloves and metallic-y tweed coat and dress by @markarian_nyc (and cool enough to change her shoes.) The whole event is a complete 360 degree turn into a new world of hope.
And then the greatest moment, Lady Gaga, in resplendent cardinal red and black with a golden dove by @schiaparelli , the most amazing balloon skirt ever scene on an Inaugural stage. And out comes Jennifer Lopez in full-on @chanelofficial singing "This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land." Her diamond and pearl dangling earrings, and her simple white Garbo-esque coat and trousers, her hair so beautifully coiffed. I am so proud to be an American. I have fallen down so many times in my life, but I rise today to say to all of you, with tears of joy,
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, and everyone on that stage in the Capitol is the embodiment of grace, class, and hope. Gone is thrash wind of corruption, nouveau gaudy chic, and gone is the worst president in the history of our nation. His disdain for democracy was too much, just too much.
This was a moment I 've been waiting for. I met all the Biden's the late beau, and Hunter, and Dr. Biden during the Obama years. I met President Biden, in the family car, on that Amtrak train to Washington, for the first Inaugural of President Barack Hussein Obama. HOPE IS ETERNAL!

The furniture in the salon is rare 18th Century Italian, a settee with chairs. Of course, I lost my grandmother and Diana Vreeland, that year. So on Xmas eve, I went by Concorde to Paris, was shuttled off by car, Briam, (he was the chauffeur then) and Karl hosted me for two weeks, into January. Karl had also lost the love of his life, Jacques de Bascher earlier that year, so we both mourned. He was never seen before lunch, (often and frequently served at 4 p.m.) and everyone was served breakfast in bed. We changed clothes,and dressed to the moral codes of dress of our host. Food was superb, personal service, out of this world, next level quality. Diptyque candles were lit in every room, and burned all day. Saffron yellow Porthault towels were abundant.
Linens were changed every single day. There was a hidden staff, I never saw the staff until dinner was served or when they came with my breakfast tray. If lunch was at 4 in the afternoon, then dinner might happen at 9:45 p.m. and last until the early hours of the morning. Karl once loaned me the sofa that I am seated on, but he made sure he asked for it back when I returned to New York in 1995. Karl was that generous. He would lend you rare suites of furniture and then ask for them back. The flowers in a fresh wicker basket were from Moulie Savart, where Karl spent fortunes for years. The best florist on square Palais-Bourbon, just a door down from Vogue's Paris office. joy I sustain, is that I learned last Sunday, I am a Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des lettres, of the French Republic. This was the best day in my life, to be in the august and impeccable body of Chevaliers: Diana Vreeland, Tina Turner, James Baldwin, Rudolph Nureyev and for a black man educated in public schools in Durham, North Carolina, I thank my French teacher, the late Cynthia P. Smith, who wrapped me in French: the language, the culture, style, history and literature. I also want to thank Wanda Garrett, my English teacher, who still resides in Durham, and who is a member of the Links Chapter of Durham, who had her own television show in Durham, early in the Sixties. She somehow knew that I was special. Oh how I wish my mother, my father, William Carroll Talley, and my grandmother, all her nieces and nephews, all her siblings , and all my cousins who have gone on to glory were here. Far exceeding the pre-sale estimates, Christie's raised over $3.5 million for his beneficiaries, Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina. The iconic auction house saw a tremendous number of new bidders, many of whom were millennials. While all 66 lots sold at Christie’s and another 300 online, there are many more treasures in André’s estate.

André left a bequest of clothing, accessories, and fashion memorabilia to SCAD, to be displayed, as well as his beloved Truman Capote sofa. Prior to the auction, the trust opened his home, allowing SCAD to acquire over 300 items, enough for a least 65 complete looks of Andre’s, including one of the 3 Norma Kamali Sleeping Bag coats.

Special thanks to all of you, to the incomparable @therealdvf and to @christiesinc for the care and concern for the legacy and cherished belongings of our dear André. As Pulitzer Prize-winning fashion critic @robingivhan said, “A man is much more than his possession, but in the case of André, these objects allude to the dignity instilled by his Southern upbringing, the bounty of his star-dusted life.”

We look forward to future exhibitions @scaddotedu the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture @nmaahc and others.

André Leon Talley - 22K Likes - As we prepare our tables for Thanksgiving tomorrow, I’m reminded of a beautiful luncheon that was hosted by Kay Graham in her Georgetown home, in her legendary Billy Baldwin- decorated dining room. The luncheon was in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales. To my surprise, I was seated to the right of Diana. This was indeed an honor. As the luncheon continued, I made a colossal blunder. My elbow knocked Princess Diana’s red wine glass straight into her lap (she wore a lavender Gianni Versace suit with a slim pencil skirt). There was an audible gasp at the table. I said to myself, inside my head, “oh well, this is it, you’ll never be asked anywhere again. You’re sunk.” With grace and total ease, Diana dipped the edge of her linen napkin in her water glass and looked at me with a beautiful smile as she dotted her dress. “Oh, it’s nothing,” she said.

Princess Diana reinvented her Sloane Ranger, Miss Prim style to high voltage glamour with the help of the late Anna Harvey of @britishvogue . The defining moment: that short little black dress she let show her sexy cleavage at Graydon Carter’s reception in London.

She redefined her liberated sexy princess style with a little black vampy dress by a Greek female designer when she arrived at Graydon Carter’s Serpentine Gallery benefit in June 1994. In fact Diana used fashion as revenge armour to battlethrough the tsunami of pain and hurt she suffered from her disastrous marriage. Caption : As we prepare our tables for Thanksgiving tomorrow, I’m reminded of a beautiful luncheon that was hosted by Kay Graham in her Georgetown home, in her legendary Billy Baldwin- decorated dining room. The luncheon was in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales. To my surprise, I was seated to the right of Diana. This was indeed an honor. As the luncheon continued, I made a colossal blunder. My elbow knocked Princess Diana’s red wine glass straight into her lap (she wore a lavender Gianni Versace suit with a slim pencil skirt). There was an audible gasp at the table. I said to myself, inside my head, “oh well, this is it, you’ll never be asked anywhere again. You’re sunk.” With grace and total ease, Diana dipped the edge of her linen napkin in her water glass and looked at me with a beautiful smile as she dotted her dress. “Oh, it’s nothing,” she said. Princess Diana reinvented her Sloane Ranger, Miss Prim style to high voltage glamour with the help of the late Anna Harvey of @britishvogue . The defining moment: that short little black dress she let show her sexy cleavage at Graydon Carter’s reception in London. She redefined her liberated sexy princess style with a little black vampy dress by a Greek female designer when she arrived at Graydon Carter’s Serpentine Gallery benefit in June 1994. In fact Diana used fashion as revenge armour to battlethrough the tsunami of pain and hurt she suffered from her disastrous marriage.
