On a piece of wasteland a team of epic volunteers, builders, craftsmen, built an entire memory village - with pub, post office, record shop, cafe, bakers, cinema, bowling lawn, landscaped gardens! We worked in the pouring rain, in a recession, it was beyond stressful - but I thought my heart would burst, visiting it in the sunshine today, seeing what a difference it has made in this Wirral community. They now have over 400 volunteers helping out. The idea is that someone with dementia can wander safely round the village, dropping in on shops, listening to their favourite record, watching a film, having a singalong in the pub, doing whatever they want. Anneka Rice Instagram - Aw..on this day in 1982, the first episode of a daring new show called Treasure Hunt was broadcast on Channel 4. We had a ridiculous amount of fun making the series. There were genuine near misses and true jeopardy. I ended up in A & E more than once. Flinging ourselves round the world in a helicopter without doors was thrilling though. Up till then, tv was lacking ‘live’ adventure - and definitely lacking young women calling the shots. Treasure Hunt changed the face of tv for ever! A woman centre stage of the action! Anneka Rice Instagram - Beyond honoured to have a painting in the same exhibition as Maggi Hambling! In fact, two! It’s all part of “Maggi Hambling - Teacher”, a celebration of her teaching life. Being taught by Maggi Hambling has been life-changing and our weekly classes are a true highlight of my life. She is gruff and funny and wise and kind and I hear her voice ringing in my ears whenever I start a new painting. I met her 15 years ago when I interviewed her and I was bewitched. I asked her then and there if I could join her Master Class. She looked at me for about 10 minutes and then wrote on a stub of paper an address and ‘10am. Charcoal’. I turned up the next day and have been part of her eccentric, nurturing, creative group ever since. Every person in the groups paints in a completely different way which Maggi celebrates. There is no house style. The exhibition is at Morley Gallery 6-26 March so do come along and have a look at what we all get up to. @morleygallery #maggihambling #painting #exhibition

Anneka Rice Instagram - I’m on The One Show tonight talking about volunteering as it’s the Big Help Out this weekend! Lots of opportunities to get stuck in with your local charity or community. You’ll make new friends, feel useful, it’s a no-brainer. This was me aged 20. I was working in Hong Kong as a newsreader, thousands of miles from home. I was lonely and I started to volunteer in refugee camps where boat people from Vietnam were arriving, utterly destitute. I also found a community in the local children’s home! I used to take the kids on outings - all had disabilities and had been abandoned at birth. Ah John with one-leg was my favourite! He was pushed around by the other kids in a rough box on wheels. I found solace and friendship working in these different teams.. Volunteering is a two-way thing. You are hugely helping people but the benefits for you are also immense. Humans are hard-wired to be altruistic and the power of the collective is a thing of beauty! I never looked back. So go on the Big Help Out app and it will match you with a local project to snuggle in with this weekend, even if just for an hour. Lots of opportunities to get stuck in with your local charity or community. You’ll make new friends, feel useful, it’s a no-brainer. This was me aged 20. I was working in Hong Kong as a newsreader, thousands of miles from home. I was lonely and I started to volunteer in refugee camps where boat people from Vietnam were arriving, utterly destitute. I also found a community in the local children’s home! I used to take the kids on outings - all had disabilities and had been abandoned at birth. Ah John with one-leg was my favourite! He was pushed around by the other kids in a rough box on wheels. I found solace and friendship working in these different teams.. Volunteering is a two-way thing. You are hugely helping people but the benefits for you are also immense. Humans are hard-wired to be altruistic and the power of the collective is a thing of beauty! I never looked back. So go on the Big Help Out app and it will match you with a local project to snuggle in with this weekend, even if just for an hour.
