Anuna De Wever Instagram - 🚨MAKE THIS GO VIRAL!🚨

We disrupted the Flemish Parliament, demanding a ban on the transit and sale of weapons to Ixrahell.

This is the 138th day of the genocide against the people of Gaza. 138 days of relentless bombardments on people, homes, orchards, universities, mosques, and hospitals.

Through the port of Antwerp, ships from the Ixrahelli shipping company Zim have been able to transport 246 tons of ammunition and 20 tons of detonators to Israel. And they continue to do so...

This weaponry is now sowing death and destruction in G@z@, Lebanon, and Syria.
Our policy makers are complicit in these crimes.

We have the power.
Pressure our policy makers.
Stop arming Gen0cide.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Today, I marched with 14-year-old Ben, who lost his friend Rosa to the devastating floods in Belgium this summer.

I marched with Mitzi, who in the Philippines has had to to experience the destructive force of climate change her whole life.

I marched with Thomas, who has to explain to his two-year-old daughter why our beautiful planet as we know it now, may only exist in history books by the time she grows up.

These are just a few of the millions of stories. Everyone who showed up today has a story. Everyones future on the line, if we don’t act now.

I am now looking at our leaders.
By now, you have heard our stories.

It’s about time you realize, you are also a part of this story.

We need real, conscious climate leadership - and we need it now.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Being non-binary is a privilege.

Since I could not follow the examples I had, I had to invent myself by making my own rules.

Instead of questioning myself, I questioned society’s blueprint and found out there’s millions of people around the world that also had to design their own - unconventional - blueprint.

The queer movement is a movement for equal rights and for liberation. And let me tell you something you might have not thought about before: queer liberation is also a fight for the liberation of straight and cisgender people.

It’s a dream about freeing people from their fear of otherness and prejudices. It’s giving everybody a chance to break loose from the preconceptions that there is only one right way to lead your life.

Being queer means being able to investigate societal structures and question them.

It’s about being able to let go of the old blueprints and unwritten laws that define who we are and how we should live.

The journey to freedom begins with your own liberation and ends with systemic change.

Happy #nonbinaryweek šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Dear trans kids,

Anuna De Wever Instagram - A new chapter of activism has begun.

Many said that COP26 was one of humanity’s last chances to turn the tide sufficiently in order to stay under 1.5C.

It took me a day, after COP, to reflect and feel the grief of everything that has happened and the decisions made over the past two weeks. I feel much more disappointed and exhausted than I normally do.

Although some of the negotiators pretend the two last weeks were a success, most even admit it was a failure. Coal will not be phased out. Gas and oil wasn’t even on the table.
Current targets will increase emissions instead of reduce them. They’ll lead to a world uninhabitable for millions of people.

This is an insult towards the world. And an insult towards people. Finally there’s no words anymore to hide the inaction that is taking place. Its more than clear that our so called ā€˜world leaders’ decided to take a path that’ll leave millions of people behind and will endanger humanity.

And as a quick reminder, these are the people many of us VOTE for.

We will need to change all of it. And we can. This is not the moment to give up hope. This is the moment to not settle for anything else than the truth anymore.

It’ll take time for me to figure out and completely feel what this means for me as an activist and in what way I see the future of my activism. But if there’s one thing I know it’s that we need to double, triple, the amount of pressure.
And I’ll be a part of that pressure.
Anuna De Wever Instagram - Friends who change the world together, stay together šŸ’ŖšŸ¼ā¤ļø

Anuna De Wever Instagram - I’ve been really scared the past few weeks. Everything that’s been happening this summer going from droughts to extreme floods to heat domes and crop failures has been absolutely terrifying and another reminder that the climate crisis is happening right here and right now. Normally when I’m overwhelmed or scared I take long mountain hikes and try to gain perspective. But the only thing I can see now is a world in crisis. That’s not going to change unless we change it. We will be back on the streets on the 10th of October with all Belgian climate movements and we urge you to join us. We don’t have any more time to waste and policy makers need to be held accountable. Activism is our only way to fight this reality.
I truly hope to see you there!

Anuna De Wever Instagram - This is the climate crisis in action.

Currently, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Germany are being hit by extremely heavy rainfall and floods.

Entire villages are being destroyed. Hundreds of people are being evacuated by emergency services.

All IPCC reports have for a long time been predicted that global warming is projected to lead to a higher intensity of rainfall throughout Europe. Extreme weather will occur more and more frequently.

Our thoughts are with the victims and all those who have lost their homes due to the extreme weather events such as droughts, floods and heatwaves this summer.

A lot of gratitude to those who are working in the rescue operations. @youth.for.climate

Anuna De Wever Instagram - For far too long I have pushed away my femininity and the woman inside me.

Because I’m non-binary, patriarchy made me believe I could not be both, and I had to push away all the ā€˜woman’ I was, to become the man I wanted to be.

I’ve loved all the beautiful, powerful and vulnerable things in the woman next to me, but hated it about myself. And now, I want to apologize to myself. For believing this restrictive version of what femininity looks like.

It is my biggest ally, my greatest force and a crucial part of ā€˜me’ that I've finally learned to love. I see that now. My womanhood is only, and solely, defined by me and what I want it to be.

And so today on #womansday I want to remind you of the infinity womanhood holds.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - In a new survey of Eurobarometer, Climate change is seen as the single most serious problem that the world is facing today. The majority of people in the survey mentioned they are doing something themselves to tackle climate change, like reducing waste, going vegan, flying less,... but still the big majority of people holds big businesses and governments around the world accountable to fight the climate crisis on big scale. Most people even mentioned that they find the EU recovery package should largely fund green projects and the economy at large should be re-oriented towards being green.

On top of that, 3 quarters of the questioned EU citizens say their national government is not doing enough to tackle climate change.

Dear policymakers, this is directly pointed at you!

Anuna De Wever Instagram - What is newsworthy?

We constantly see the media and politicians trying to minimize the climate crisis.

Meanwhile, millions of people around the world are already suffering from its consequences.

A report published this week by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre is a plea to world leaders to act in the face of an imminent and unprecedented humanitarian crisis.

The study shows that since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, climate-related disasters have affected over 139 million people worldwide.

658 million have been exposed to extreme temperatures.

The numbers are terrifying.

Our leaders’ ignorance and inability to act is purely rooted in privilege. It’s time for them to wake up.

This is why, in three weeks, we will be back on the streets of Brussels to strike and to demand climate justice for all.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Why do we need to change?

The fast fashion industry is a highly exploitative industry both damaging for the climate and human rights. As an activist, it is one of my main priorities to make sure I do not contribute to this industry.

A sustainable fashion brand that is on track to representing the future of fashion is Armedangels. They prioritize the environment and worker’s rights in the supply chain, and they also have their own second-hand stores and upcycling programs.

Fast fashion is one of the most damaging industries in the world, and we need strong players to change that from within.

Let’s build this community around slow fashion and sustainability, in which we make fast fashion irrelevant!

Anuna De Wever Instagram - I will not be attending COP27 in Egypt this month.

#COP27 will be held in a dictatorship that is systematically suppressing activists.

This conference is becoming a smokescreen with the purpose of hiding the real human rights crisis in Egypt, concealing the violations and killings of thousands of activists who have been standing up for their human and environmental rights over the past years.

It has also become clear that Egypt has no real ambition to push the climate negotiations forward. Protests are criminalized and scientific reports are labeled as ā€˜fake news’.

In the last few of weeks, a lot of petitions and demonstrations have risen up from the climate movement against the Egyptian government, because our fight against the climate crisis is the same fight for human rights.
I call on all climate activists and government delegates to unite under one key message at COP27: unless political freedoms and the rights of civil society advocates are safeguarded, there can be no real climate justice.

I am in a position in which I’m able to decide not to physically partake in the conference. That is for me, from my specific place in society, at this time.
I do think it is extremely important to continue putting pressure on both the Egyptian government and on world leaders. I will be supporting the activists who are attending the conference and putting pressure on the negotiations where I can, from Belgium.

For that, we are putting final touches to our project with @unicefafrica - which will be showcased in various places (both live and virtual) at COP27. It will serve as an amplifier for the work done by youth on the front lines of the climate crisis in South Sudan and East Africa.

The climate crisis is a human rights crisis, and we must urgently start addressing it as such.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Today, we occupied the streets of Belgium in Ghent, Louvain-La-Neuve, Antwerp and Mens šŸ“£šŸŒŽ - swipe to see the crowd!

Why was today important?

We are going toward a world of 3 to 4 degrees warming, which is a world no one can live in.

This is not because we don’t have the solutions or knowledge to prevent it, but because we continue building a system that exploits people and planetary boundaries.

Today’s policy-makers do not have things under control, although they want you to think they do.

Currently our country, Belgium, doesn’t even have a federal agreement to put to on the table at COP26.

We need to do more. Much, much more.

This is why as @youth.for.climate will go to #COP26 to keep the pressure high, make sure people are informed and to hold our leaders accountable.

Our participation is possible because of all of you who joined us on the streets today, and who have helped by spreading the word online.

Last night, the hemicycle of the @epbelgium was crowded with fellow activists, policymakers and scientists, calling for degrowth and decolonization at the closing plenary of the #BeyondGrowth conference. I joined their call and reinforced every message I had heard.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - No trust without honesty.

In negotiations and debates with policy-makers, we as activists are always asked to ā€˜work together’ with our leaders. We are asked to trust them. We are told that we are fighting the same fight.

Meanwhile, these same politicians are lying about the consequences of their own policies, and protecting big corporations that greenwash the truth behind their business, as if everything is fine. They are ignoring the simple fact that 'business as usual' will not sustain life on this planet.

It’s impossible to act as one front against the climate crisis, if our leaders continue to ignore, minimize and deny the crisis we are faced with. In order for us to work together, we must trust each other. And honesty is a condition for that trust.

We must keep the conversation going, we must keep the debate alive, but we must also strike, until our leaders have no other choice but to be honest with us and themselves.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Life update šŸ§šŸ—ŗ

It’s been quite overwhelming for me lately to keep up with social media.

Both on a personal level, and a work level, I have been juggling complex and difficult things. I constantly find myself feeling like I’m running out of time. I’m sure some of you relate to that?

A month ago, I started an internship for Climate Action Network Europe at their Brussels headquarters. Parallel to office hours, I work in my primary role of an activist and pursue my degree at university.

Sometimes I feel like I’ve been running a sprint for the past three years, while actually this is a marathon.

It’s made me realize I need to spend more time just being.

Reading the books I want to read. Having the conversations I want to have. Fighting this crisis on different fronts with different people.

I’m granting myself time to be fully present. Chasing sunsets, climbing mountains, sharing deep moments with my partner and the people I love, feeling the waves of the ocean. All while focusing on the big projects that need my full presence. Not a worn-out version of me, chasing a million different things.

I hope you get to do that too. The change we want to see is about sustainability, but also about resilience, rest and care.

I’ll see you less here in the coming weeks, but as always. my email inbox remains open for the revolution šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Everyone has a first.

I remember the first strike I ever went to. I felt very excited but also scared and hesitant. I didn’t really know what to expect. What would being in such a large crowd of people feel like?

When I arrived I was overwhelmed by the amazing energy in the air. All around me, people were sharing chants and holding banners and flags together.

I went with two friends and left with many more. I ended up having the most amazing time, dancing through the streets to loud music and feeling lifted up by a crowd of people fighting for the same dream.

Above all, I left with hope for a better world.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Three days ago, a good friend of mine asked me to meet here in Glasgow, and go have a walk by the river.

I told her ā€œSure. Where should I go?ā€

And she started laughing. ā€œHow do you not know? The river is right next to the conference venue you’ve going to for a week now, Anuna.ā€

This is exactly what’s wrong with the world.

During our walk, I realized how exhausted I was, and had already been before coming to the COP.

These days have been extremely stressful and chaotic. It’s hard sometimes to not get overwhelmed.

Although we are trying to change this part of the world, we are also being pulled into the rat race much too often.

Today I took a beat and shut off my phone, went for a hike and rested.

I feel really privileged and lucky to be able to take time for my mental health, and hope other activists that have been in or outside COP also took a step back today.

A part of sustainable activism is that we, as activists, also to take care of our mental health.

Rest is revolutionary. šŸ§˜šŸ¼

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Very few people dare to look the climate crisis dead in the eye. We all notice it for a split second and than look away again - for some that’s because it’s too big to grasp. For others it because they don’t understand how existential it is. But the truth is, as long as we are not all capable to look at it, take it seriously, acknowledge that we’re a part of it and fight for the necessary change, we will be too late. This existential crisis is optional. It’s not defined. But we need to collectively decide we will face it. Don’t just look away.
However easy that is... #powertothepeople

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Just a little reminder to all activists out there: it’s okay to feel heavy and exhausted after everything that happened at #COP26.

We fought hard for resolutions and decisions, which we hoped would turn out differently.

It’s extremely heavy to understand the decisions that have been made now, and the consequences that they will have.

I feel heavy and tired. But I also know this will pass again. Soon I’ll be picked up by a new wave of energy and be reminded that if anyone can change what’s happening right now, it’s us.

The climate movement has already had a huge impact worldwide.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Yesterday, I spoke at a high-level panel at the @councilofeurope, joining UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres, among others.

Standing there, appealing for my right for a future, was not how I dreamt of spending my youth.

Our leaders’ actions have, however, have left me without a choice. Denied of my freedom to live without fear.

I never had a choice to be anything but brave.

We discussed a set of resolutions which recommend to draw up a new protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights on the right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

This would give power back to the people by providing them a way to hold their governments accountable for their lack of climate action.

However, an Assembly vote in favor is only the beginning. The final decision will be taken by the ministerial body of the Council, which already refused to take action on a similar call in 2009.

This is why my question to the Committee of Ministers is:

Are you half as brave as I am?

It’s time for you too, to show courage- just like we activists have to, every single day.

We are already late. Climate justice can’t wait any longer.

Sounds like they are scared of our honesty about the crisis, while they continue to minimize it.

Let me be clear: Those complicit to the climate crisis do not deserve to be called leaders.

These politicians are directly responsible for the crisis as long as they keep taking greenwashed shortcuts, approving fatal policies and allowing the crisis to evolve right in front of their eyes.

Their lack of courage to stand up for our future leaves us without a choice.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released a report today. Scientists are crystal clear: global temperatures is still rising and it is due to human activity. This will lead to stronger, more frequent floods, heat waves, intense raining, fires,... literally existential threats to humanity.
All of this is not new, what is new is that it’s going way faster then we thought. We have all been witnesses of the direct consequences of climate change this summer, and it’ll only get worse.
We need to unite on the streets again. 10/10, we’ll see you there!

Anuna De Wever Instagram - As a reminder of what #Belgium is actually doing at #COP26 right now:

āŒ Has no federal agreement on a common target

āŒ Refuses to be part of high ambition coalition

āŒ Has zero willingness to put pressure on international global targets

And at the same time, we are preaching about reaching the targets of the Paris agreement while we know the 2030 and 2050 targets are actually leaving millions of people behind. At the current rate we will exceed our carbon budget in about 6 years.

This means every next generation will inherit a world that becomes more and more uninhabitable as climate change will be irreversible.

We are destroying the very ecosystems that are keeping us alive. By 2050 we will have more than half a billion extra climate refugees. In 4 years from now, half of the world’s population will have experienced water scarcity and adaptation costs for continents like Africa will become so high that they’ll have to use the financial resources for education, healthcare and food supplies.

Don’t be fooled. We are not on track. To be honest, contrary to our politicians, we are today deciding that some lives are not worth saving. And we know people will die. Most often the people that are least responsible for the climate crisis and already live in vulnerable livelihoods and communities.

We are here as activists to put pressure on these policies, and speaking the truth about what is happening is the essence of that pressure.

The report leaves no room for greenwashing anymore. We literally have what we need to change course. It’s privilege, ignorance and a lack of political will that is robbing us from having a habitable planet.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Changes 🧭

I’ve entered this new season with a lot of gratitude for @youth.for.climate. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, while simultaneously understanding that it is time for me to pursue my work, priorities and dreams in different places.

I’ve been with YFC since day one, when we were just four people on a couch, with too many beers and a hell of a big dream. Today it is part of a global movement that has grown into a powerful political force.

A few months ago, I decided to no longer continue working within YFC, and started contributing to new and exciting projects with other actors.

I’ve learned a lot in the past years as a young activist. I’ve celebrated victories and learned from my many mistakes, and I’m starting to understand where I think my contribution can be the greatest. I want to continue supporting the movements and activists who are not as privileged as me, when it comes to access to platforms and arenas. I want to keep growing and learning, being the imperfect activist that I am, and working for change with the people that I admire and love.

We need massive policy and systemic change, and I want to be a part of pursuing that in the most radical and inclusive way.

I can’t wait to share more information with you soon on the upcoming projects which I’m thrilled to be a part of.

I look forward to taking what I have learned so far — and beginning again. šŸ”

As #BlackFriday is approaching, I spoke with a few of my friends and realised how few people are actually aware of what Black Friday is.

A huge part of the climate crisis is our fossil fuel addicted society, which is dependant on overconsumption.

The fashion industry, worth 2.5 trillion dollars, is responsible for wide-spread, well-documented human rights violations and environmental destruction.

The fashion industry is rife with greenwashing. Labels like ā€˜eco conscious’ and ā€˜nature-based products’ are very often just tricks to make consumers feel like they’re making right decisions, while entire companies employ methods of modern slavery and destroy biodiversity and ecosystems.

80% of ā€˜black friday purchases’ are thrown away after one or even no uses. These sales are based on FOMO (fear of missing out) campaigns, which prey on people's insecurities and cause massive global pollution at the same.

A recent report from U.K price comparison shows how in 2020, Black Friday in the United Kingdom was responsible for 429 thousand metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, which is the equivalent of 435 return flights from London to New York. In one single day, in one single country.

Circular design should just be design. Sustainable fashion should just be fashion.

Please share this post and make your friends and followers conscious about their decisions, their responsibility and agency to choose differently šŸŒ

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Putin’s war is funded by Europe’s addiction to fossil fuels.

Europe is spending billions of euros - monthly - on coal, gas and oil from Russia.

Belgium alone spent more than 3500 million euros in 2021.

This system of fossil fuels our politicians keep defending is exploiting people, exploiting the planet and has caused conflicts around the world for years on end.

Most big conflicts are just people competing over resources - and through that - destroying the ecosystems that keep us alive.
If there’s any time to start changing this system, it is now.

More money for renewables, less money for war.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Will Belgium once again fail to demonstrate climate leadership? šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø #COP26

The COP is the biggest climate conference in the world, and the 26th edition is kicking off this Sunday in Glasgow.

In 2018 at COP24, Belgium refused to sign what was called a 'high ambition coalition'. Basically, they failed to commit to the bare minimum of ambition in the fight against the climate crisis.

This time around,Belgian policy-makers are expected to once again fail to deliver. Why?

Because the Flemish government refuses to step up their game, and meet EU's climate targets by 2030 and 2050.

This is why our country won't have a national agreement to show at the upcoming COP, on how we will take responsibility in fighting the climate crisis.

This is extremely alarming, as we are running out of time and this is one of the last international collaboration moments, where we will be able to make a significant change.

Tomorrow, we are leaving for COP26 with a delegation of ten young people from the @youth.for.climate movement.

We must be there to make noise, to hold our leaders accountable and to defend the only way out of a catastrophic future: real, conscious climate leadership.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Beyond the riptide

I’ve been floating on the salty waves of the water for a while today, and while everyone was stuck in the high water mark where the waves burst white, I managed to swam beyond and feel the movement of the ocean and the magnitude of the waves without getting caught in them.

In that way, I was able to still read the ocean but I didn’t have to fight the power of the water, pushing me to shore.

When I looked around me I saw 3 different decisions people would make. Those who decide to not enter the ocean at all and stay safely on shore, which would forever prevent them to experience the wildness of the oceans.

There’s also those who decide to go in, but get caught in the waves and spend their lives fighting the riptide, because they never dare or find the inner power to work through the current.

And than there’s those who power through and get beyond the riptide. They will still feel the undertow, the low tide and the tidal waves, but don’t get caught in them anymore.

The person at shore will live through the same ocean as the person caught in the waves and the one beyond the riptide - though they experience it completely different.

I think I’ve been trying to swim beyond the riptide the last few months. It’s a hard swim and every now and than a big wave has pushed me all the way back again. But my inner power and belief in the extremely beautiful horizon I’d get to see If I could power through those waves has given me the endurance to do so.

When I now talk about the waves and the horizon of the ocean I’m swimming in, it feels completely estranged from the people that are still caught in the riptide or staring from shore.

We’re all in the same ocean, but the water feels completely different. I’ve wished I could have pulled some with me, beyond the riptide, to see this beautiful sunset I am now seeing. But getting in other people’s waves is dangerous and it could drown both swimmers.

So I’ll be beyond the riptide, floating on the salt of the waves carrying me up and down, healing from the though swim and encouraging others to keep going.

It’s worth it. 🌊
Anuna De Wever Instagram - Personal story

I had a really interesting conversation recently with a good friend, about how personal our activism is.

We constantly discuss responsibility, systems and politics. But the roots of my energy comes from the personal experiences I’ve had and the people in my life.

When I’m on the streets with a microphone shouting for equality, it’s because of the 12 year-old-girl I met in a refugee camp ten years ago, who made me realize how unequal this world is.

When I demand LGBTQ and women’s rights, it’s because I want to be able to walk hand in hand with my partner on the streets, without being harassed.

When I shout for climate justice, it’s because of the friends I made in the Amazon forest, who showed me how the political games in the western world are costing peoples lives.

When I stand up and refuse to be silent, it’s because too many people in my life have tried to silence me.

Going back to our roots and remembering where our activism comes from, and why we do what we do, may often look like anger, but essentially it all comes from a place of love.
Anuna De Wever Instagram - Are you ready to make some noise? šŸ’„

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Why do we still need to strike? šŸŒŽ

I recently had a conversation with someone who told me they didn’t join the climate strikes because it wasn’t clear to them ā€˜what we asked exactly’ and if anything is really changing because of it.

Let me take a moment to lay it out for you.

Science has made clear that we have less than six years before climate change becomes irreversible.

This is because we would produce so many emissions and break so many ecosystems that they won’t be able to bounce back. This means that we need rapid and urgent action.

Three years ago, we designed a climate action plan with more than 100 scientists especially for Belgian policy. We’ve given this to all party leaders in Belgium. All our demands are in there. This is about higher targets, a faster energy transition, enhancing biodiversity and much more.

This plan has been ignored and disregarded since. Politicians have not incorporated this in their policies. In the EU, but also Belgium alone, our climate targets are way too low and the transition to renewables is not being prioritized. With current policies we are going to a world of 3-4 degrees rise.

This is not a world we can live in.

We are globally already dealing with water and food shortages, refugee crisis, extreme weather events, extreme droughts, floods and sea-level rise. If we don’t act now, these things will only become worse.

Not enough is being done and we are about to inherit an unlivable planet. We cannot ignore the facts and need to put pressure on our leaders to show real climate leadership — at last.

This is why we strike, and why we are calling you to join us on the 22nd of October for the #GlobalStrike.

Spread the word! šŸ“£

Anuna De Wever Instagram - Belgium’s true colors.

The Climate Change Performance Index, which measures the climate performances of the EU and 60 other countries, has officially ranked Belgium below China, India, and most other EU countries šŸŒ

This shows once more that we are most literally failing on all fronts. Instead of making progress, we are declining. Our climate policies lack ambition and our emissions aren’t reduced fast enough.

Belgian politicians like to point fingers at other countries, as the ones who should be held responsible. The index results published today show that this narrative is officially untrue.

So, to all my dear politicians in Belgium.

The numbers don’t lie. We can all see through your false narratives.

You won’t solve the climate crisis by pointing fingers and defending your empty policies. It’s time for you to actually do something.

To do better.

To demonstrate the leadership you were elected to show.

We are watching.
Anuna De Wever Instagram - Taxono- what? šŸ¤”

Have you seen the word taxonomy trending in the last weeks, but aren’t really sure what it’s actually about?

I got you.

šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ The EU taxonomy is a system that classifies and lists ā€˜environmentally sustainable economic activities’ to provide companies, investors and policymakers with definitions, for which economic activities can be considered ā€˜green’. In essence, this is created to prevent greenwashing.

However, the European Commission has recently labeled both nuclear and fossil gas activities as ā€˜green activities’ šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

Why is this problematic?

🌱 The construction of new nuclear power plants and gas plants are not in line with the 1.5°C trajectory and are not the most sustainable energy available, both economically or environmentally.

āŒ Classifying these energy sources as green would mean that companies and industries can keep investing and burning fossil fuels for years to come. This is irresponsible and it completely destroys the actual purpose of the Green Deal.

🚨 The window to meaningfully change things and not to reach any tipping points becomes smaller every day. New fossil fuel infrastructure is the last thing we can allow to happen.

šŸ“£ We cannot let this happen. We need your help to fight this, and to keep those fossil fuels in the ground.

Stay tuned to find out what you can do in the coming weeks! šŸ”„
Anuna De Wever Instagram - Today, the president of Palau told other world leaders they ā€œmight as well bomb our islands instead of making us suffer, only to witness our slow and painful demise.ā€

This is what #COP26 should be about. The most affected people and areas who should have the biggest platform in the negotiations.

So far we have heard many speeches about ambition, but if we look at the set targets, we are going to a world of 3 degrees rise.

This means world leaders are fighting to create a world that will cross our carbon budget and leave future generations with a planet that becomes more and more inhabitable.

At the same time, Belgium has no federal agreement on a common target. it refuses to be a part of the high ambition coalition, spends 13 billion euros a year on fossil fuels and has absolutely zero credibility or willingness to put pressure on the international global targets.

I personally feel ashamed of our country for minimizing the climate crisis continuously and acting as if we are on track.

Don’t be fooled. We’re not on track.

We have a very long way to go.

But the power of the street, is in the building! šŸ”„
Anuna De Wever Instagram - WHAT A STRIKE 🄳

Glasgow was on fire today. After feeling so frustrated about all the negotiations happening at #COP26 it was amazing to see, hear and strike with this crowd of people.

The COP isn’t just total greenwashing of ignorant politicians that are pretending to save the world. It’s also the most exclusive COP ever. All the people the are supposed to be here, are not here. Because of systems of oppression that are continuously being upheld by these same people.

At the same time, Flanders came out with its new climate plan. Apart from being disappointed it’s literally just insulting towards millions of people around the world. I feel ashamed for the lack of responsibility my country is willing to take.

Thank you to the amazing people with us on the streets today! You rock šŸ”„ and remember, power lays with the people.
Anuna De Wever Instagram - TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO PULL UP!

For the first time since the covid pandemic started,we will take on the streets again tomorrow in Brussels
āœŠšŸ¼šŸŒ

During these months, we have worked behind the scenes and repeatedly told our leaders to show courage by demonstrating real climate leadership.

Unsurprisingly, the climate targets and commitments presented by our leaders are not even close to being ambitious enough. And they know it very well.

Now with the restrictions lifted, we need all of you to join us in sending a strong message to our leaders.

It’s time that they feel our disappointment.

It’s time to get loud.

It’s time to take on the streets again.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - #COP26, here we come! šŸšŠāž”ļøšŸŒŽ

Today we are leaving to Glasgow with activists and civil society actors brought together by @railtothecop .

Due to the unequal distribution of the vaccins, many activists and experts from the Global South won’t be able to attend COP26. This is tragic, as these are the people that are experiencing the heaviest consequences of the crisis and ought to claim their seat at the table at COP26.

All the decisions that will be made in the coming two weeks will have an immense impact on the different scenarios this world can go to.

The climate crisis isn’t just about emissions in the atmosphere. It’s about human rights and global equity. It’s about reprioritizing from profit to people.

Are we going to choose to proceed business as usual and create an inhabitable planet? Or are we going to wake up and realize we don’t need to choose extinction?

We, humans, must decide what will happen. So what is it gonna be?

World leaders, we’re watching!

I started my speech reflecting on the first encounter I had with the reality of global inequality and the confrontation of my own massive privilege.

This crisis is not just about emissions in the atmosphere, it’s about humans. And therefore we have all the right to hold our politician accountable, bluntly and honestly.

Politicians need to be honest. Although it’s only the very first step, it’s something many of our ā€˜leaders’ don’t do. And it’s the lies and the doubts about what is currently happening that is causing this general approval of inaction.

Anuna De Wever Instagram - In the run-up to @cop27_egypt in November, I will be part of a delegation of African and European activists who will travel to South Sudan with @unicef to highlight the consequences of the climate crisis on an international platform.

There are incredible grassroots organisations in South Sudan working every day, with young people, to address the crisis that affects them directly and dramatically.

Our goal is to connect with young people in and around the Horn of Africa to work together to develop strategies to affect the outcome of COP27 in Egypt.

The region is one of the least responsible for global warming, and yet, one of the most affected by its consequences.

Internationally, very little attention is paid to the extreme drought and massive floods that are ravaging South Sudan and currently leave 8 million people, more than half of them children, in acute humanitarian need.

This crisis is being invisibilized, which is why we as privileged white European activists collectively need to pass the mic to activists and people on the frontlines, and prioritize contributing to an international coalition of movements while holding Europe accountable for their destructive, extractive and oppressive policies. We need to work together globally.

Global north countries are responsible for 92% excess emissions.

Today, most policymakers around the world are actively maintaining a system that is fundamentally built on exploitation of people and the planet.

It is therefore crucial that issues of human rights, racism, colonialism and global justice are centered in the climate debate and highlighted on international platforms such as COP27.

I am now looking at our leaders.
By now, you have heard our stories.

It’s about time you realize, you are also a part of this story.

We need real, conscious climate leadership - and we need it now.

There is no time to waste. It’s time to get #BackToTheClimate šŸŒ

Anuna De Wever - 2.3K Likes - I will not be attending COP27 in Egypt this month.

As the future generation, we are strong, loud and united. We will not give up, and will keep demanding a seat at the decision-making table.

Last night, the hemicycle of the @epbelgium was crowded with fellow activists, policymakers and scientists, calling for degrowth and decolonization at the closing plenary of the #BeyondGrowth conference. I joined their call and reinforced every message I had heard.

This is our movement of movements.

In a world where so many feel hopeless, alone and scared for the future, let’s not forget these moments of unity. When we are together, we are beyond powerful.

I hope that you join us this Sunday and can feel this too.

For the first time since the COVID pandemic hit, we can mobilize. We need you to help us in sending a strong message to our leaders.

United, we can show our leaders that their worthless promises simply aren’t enough. We need real, conscious climate leadership - and we need it now.

Anuna De Wever - 1.9K Likes - Three days ago, a good friend of mine asked me to meet here in Glasgow, and go have a walk by the river.

Rest is revolutionary. šŸ§˜šŸ¼

It’s time to make #EnvironmentRightNow 🌿

Sounds like they are scared of our honesty about the crisis, while they continue to minimize it.

Let me be clear: Those complicit to the climate crisis do not deserve to be called leaders.

These politicians are directly responsible for the crisis as long as they keep taking greenwashed shortcuts, approving fatal policies and allowing the crisis to evolve right in front of their eyes.

Their lack of courage to stand up for our future leaves us without a choice.

We will keep on striking, and never apologize for being on the right side of history.

The clock on the climate is ticking.
We are still light years away from reaching the global climate targets.
We urgently need more ambition and action from our leaders.

The team behind @youth.for.climate got together this weekend to discuss movement building, the #BackToTheClimate strike and our strategy for the upcoming #COP26 conference. It felt incredible to be all together again, to reconnect and to redesign the blueprint of the revolution.

Our movement is strong, resilient and united.
No matter how hard some may try, we will not be silenced.

We will not give up on this fight, and we are not afraid to confront our leaders who are refusing to act.

That is why we will crowd the streets of Brussels again in two weeks, and expect to see you there with us.

Anuna De Wever - 1.5K Likes - The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released a report today.

Anuna De Wever - 1.5K Likes - As a reminder of what #Belgium is actually doing at #COP26 right now:

āŒ Has no federal agreement on a common target

āŒ Refuses to be part of high ambition coalition

āŒ Has zero willingness to put pressure on international global targets

Anuna De Wever - 1.3K Likes - Will Belgium once again fail to demonstrate climate leadership? šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø #COP26

Anuna De Wever - 1.3K Likes - Why do we still need to strike?

Spread the word! šŸ“£

Spread the word! šŸ“£ Picture credits @cherryblossom_d_photography

Stay tuned to find out what you can do in the coming weeks! šŸ”„

Unsurprisingly, the climate targets and commitments presented by our leaders are not even close to being ambitious enough. And they know it very well.

Now with the restrictions lifted, we need all of you to join us in sending a strong message to our leaders.

A while back I had the honor to speak for @jameshuttoninst on the intersections between global inequality, human rights and the climate crisis, together with @lola_segers , @julietamartinezo , @cfigueres and @nicolasturgeon .

A big thank you also to Julieta and Lola for your beautiful speeches and for standing next to me in this fight for humanity.

Anuna De Wever - 1K Likes - In the run-up to @cop27_egypt in November, I will be part of a delegation of African and European activists who will travel to South Sudan with @unicef to highlight the consequences of the climate crisis on an international platform.
