Bertie Gregory Instagram - Filmed for the very first time by @bertiegregory, emperor penguin chicks leap off a 50-foot ice cliff to take their first swim!

“When the chicks are around five months old, they leave the colony and travel to the sea, normally entering the water from a height of about one to two feet off the sea ice. However, since the advent of high-res satellite imagery, scientists have been aware that some emperor colonies were breeding and raising their chicks high up on the more permanent ice shelves. But it’s never been confirmed just how these colonies descended the precipitous ice shelves—until now.

“We’d seen multiple groups of chicks walking out in this direction, but due to the undulating, icy terrain and a dangerous crevasse field, we were unable to follow them on snowmobile or on foot. They would simply disappear over the horizon. It wasn’t until I launched a drone that I was able to keep them in view and see the enormous cliff they were walking toward. As soon as I realized they were going near to the edge, I used the drone’s powerful zoom lens to maintain a very large distance from downwind. I wanted to be 100 percent sure I had no influence on their behavior. After several batteries and a couple of hours waiting, I watched a single chick walk up to the edge and launch itself off. Once the first had jumped and landed unscathed in the freezing Southern Ocean, many soon followed, and I was able to nudge in close enough to capture the scene.”

Bertie Gregory Instagram - Wildlife filmmaker @bertiegregory shares not only what he was thinking when filming Petaka the puma taking on a guanaco near Torres del Paine National Park, in Chile, but also an exciting update about Petaka and her cubs!

“When watching predator versus prey, we humans often side with the underdog. Usually that’s the prey, as predators are often larger and much better armed: polar bears hunting seals, lions hunting gazelles, leopard seals hunting penguins, to give a few examples. Pumas and guanacos, however, are very evenly matched, and this leads to some spectacular showdowns. What really struck me about watching this hunt was the unbelievable physicality and risk-taking shown by Petaka. Despite being thrown off over and over, she kept going. Having successfully hunted, she must then do this all over again—roughly every two weeks, for her entire life.

For those of you who followed Petaka’s dramatic struggle to raise her cubs in ‘Animals Up Close With Bertie Gregory,’ I’m excited to say that Petaka’s cubs Frost and Breeze successfully reached independence and are now off on their own. They will have to master the guanaco takedown themselves. Petaka has been seen mating with a couple of different males, meaning that in a few months’ time, she’ll hopefully have another litter!” #OnlyNatGeo

Bertie Gregory Instagram - Meet the ever-charismatic Epolo, son of Makumba. This little fella was totally convinced he was already a giant silverback, puffing his chest out and strutting around. Some of you asked on my last video, ‘why are you wearing a mask?’ It’s because we humans are so similar to gorillas (we share about 98% of our DNA!), we are capable of giving them our airborne diseases. Bertie Gregory Instagram - A pod of B1 Antarctic killer whales locating a resting Weddell seal. With snow falling, flying the drone felt like being in Space with stars whizzing by. Having located the seal, the pod then began to ‘spyhop’ to see their target and figure out how to get it into the water. These killer whales are spine-tinglingly intelligent. Bertie Gregory Instagram - Dzanga bai (or Village of Elephants) in @dzanga.sangha National Park is a truly extraordinary place. There’s nowhere else on earth where forest elephant gather in such big numbers. Compared to their savanna elephant cousins, forest elephants live in much smaller family groups so this enormous gathering of so many families is all the more special. This species spends the majority of their lives in thick jungle, so this clearing is a really important place for them to socialise. Shots of me by @markmcc01 and @justdrewsound. Bertie Gregory Instagram - Thank you for all the comments coming in for ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on @disneyplus! Glad to see so many people (and pet cats!) falling in love with Petaka who’s pictured here looking like a complete hero. Petaka’s mother, Sarmiento, was nicknamed ‘Hollywood’ as she had this amazing ability to strike a pose in front of the most epic backdrops. This trait clearly runs in the family! If you enjoy the episodes, please keep sharing your thoughts! #AnimalsUpClose @natgeo @wildstarfilms
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Although the mosquitos in @dzanga.sangha National Park weren’t that bad, the sweat bees were next level. These lovely little critters don’t sting. Instead, they come to drink your salty sweat. They like going in your eyes, ears, nose, armpit… anywhere wet! They also took a particular liking to @waldo_etherington. While I miss being in the jungle with the amazing forest elephants, I do not miss the sweat bees! Filmed for the ‘Elephant Quest’ episode of ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney !

Bertie Gregory Instagram - Wildlife filmmaker @bertiegregory documented emperor penguin chicks preparing to take their first plunge from the top of an Antarctic ice shelf that towered roughly 50 feet above the sea. Bertie Gregory Instagram - Echolocation – one of nature’s amazing answers to underwater navigation. Listening to these killer whales communicate and search their underwater environment was a spine-tingling experience. Amazing sound recordings by @ZubinSarosh. Bertie Gregory Instagram - While trying to record the vocalisations of B1 Antarctic killer whales, we had one individual come over and give this weird guttural clicking noise. It investigated the hydrophone by letting out a rapid series of pings just inches away. The pings were so load it blew out the microphone recording! Very cool to be part of @leighhickmott and colleagues’ long-term study of these amazing animals. Filmed by Will West and @zubinsarosh for #AnimalsUpClose on Disney @wildstarfilms @natgeo

Bertie Gregory Instagram - A pod of wave-washing killer whales hunt three crabeater seals at once. There are just 100 of these special killer whales in Antarctica. We humans often wonder just how smart are wild animals? Well, these killer whales have learned by using teamwork as a family group, and water as a tool, they can create powerful waves to access seals that would otherwise be out of reach. Every single time we saw them hunt, their tactics were different, the types of waves created were different. It was artful more than instinctive. It is not a stretch to say that they were using their imagination. The killer whales, when making those waves, can’t see their target, they have to imagine where it is. This technique that they have mastered is like that of a professional athlete who masters a sport. Shot for #AnimalsUpClose with @bertiegregory coming to @disneyplus September 13th! @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - I received lots of questions about why the killer whale in my last video launched out the water. Bertie Gregory Instagram - To keep cool, elephants shunt blood to the huge network of blood vessels in their ears. I’d read about this before, but it wasn’t until I pointed a military grade thermal imaging camera at these forest elephants, did we actually get to see it. It was fascinating to see how these blood vessel networks differed in each elephant. Bertie Gregory Instagram - I’m very excited to be a winner at this year’s Wildlife Photographer Of The Year competition @nhm_wpy! This image of three wave washing killer whales hunting a Weddell seal picked up the ‘Behaviour: Mammals’ category prize at last night’s awards ceremony at the Natural History Museum in London. While I was the one lucky enough to push the shutter button, this image was a huge team effort and based on over a decade of work from several different groups. So a huge thank you to the BBC Frozen Planet 1 team who first filmed this incredible behaviour for television back in 2009. Thank you to the Frozen Planet 2 team who I returned with 10 years later to follow the behaviour for the first time with drones. Finally, thanks to the ‘Animals Up Close’ team at @wildstarfilms who I worked with most recently to document these killer whales. Check out the ‘Antarctic Killer Waves’ episode on Disney to see the pod pictured in action! @bbcearth @natgeo

Bertie Gregory Instagram - This killer whale family’s lunch was just out of reach. This pod of B1 Antarctic killer whales spent hours hunting this crabeater seal. Multiple times the killer whales grabbed the seal and I thought it was all over. But somehow, this little seal managed to evade the ocean’s top predator. Bertie Gregory Instagram - Loving your love for Petaka, the star of ‘Animals Up Close’ Episode 1 now streaming on @disneyplus! As a cameraperson, I find it often helps during action sequences to disconnect emotionally from the subject to concentrate on keeping whatever they’re doing in focus and in frame. As I first met Petaka as a little cub, that tactic went out the window! Now an adult, she took the whole team on an emotional physical rollercoaster as she defended her cubs from male pumas twice her size and jumped on guanaco (a really dangerous prey animal to take on!). Video by Will West, @sams_natural_habitat, and @bertiegregory with an incredible team at @wildstarfilms. Expert guiding by @roberto.donoso.berrios, @ojosdelpaine, @conexionphotopatagonia, @rodrigomoragaz and Diego Araya. #AnimalsUpClose #puma #mountainlion

Bertie Gregory Instagram - Young Galapagos sea lions are endlessly curious and this individual kept approaching to within my lenses minimum focus distance. The adults are less so and during the heat of the day tend to lounge around on the beach. Many sea lion species are thigmotactic meaning essentially, they like hugs (from other sea lions, definitely not people). Despite the baking heat, we often saw them lined up together in rows. Bertie Gregory Instagram - Each day, the marine iguanas would jump off the rocks and power through 10ft waves to forage for seaweed underwater. These mini Godzillas were like pro-surfers as they duck dived under the waves. An amazing shot by @jeffbhester for the Galapagos episode of #AnimalsUpClose now streaming on Disney ! Huge thanks to @javier_mahauad for always watching our backs in this challenging filming environment. @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - When @jjwilsonphoto called me to ask if I’d like to try and film a wild otter underwater in Shetland, I assumed the shoot would consist of getting cold and not filming anything. But we weren’t going to film just any otter. This is Molly and as a tiny, starving cub she was found and helped back to health by Billy Mail. Billy and Molly formed an amazing friendship which became the story of a magical film now on @DisneyPlus in the U.S. and other regions coming soon! After being introduced by Billy, I had some epic sessions in the water with Molly. That said, she is still a wild otter with her own plan and so my original assumptions did turn out to be mostly true! Bertie Gregory Instagram - This big lightning bolt was the beginning of a long night in the trees. Just after I flinch in this video, you can see me reach down to hit the record button. I had the camera in ‘pre-roll’ mode meaning it constantly caches the previous 4 seconds. It’s a very useful function in wildlife film as it allows you to capture unexpected moments without having to burn through memory recording all the time. Hats off to @markmcc01 for capturing the view over my shoulder as his camera didn’t have pre roll so he had to be ready old school! Filmed in @dzanga.sangha National Park for the ‘Elephant Quest’ episode of ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney ! #AnimalsUpClose @wildstarfilms @natgeotv
Bertie Gregory Instagram - During the search for the wave-washing killer whales, we had several close calls with ice. The wave-washers or ‘B1s’ love hunting in ice so to have any chance of filming them, we needed to follow them into the ice fields. The wind and currents constantly reshuffle the ice into a very intimidating jigsaw. During a rather stressful 30 minutes we got stuck, but Captain Ben Wallis of @oceanexpeditions skilfully manoeuvred his 75ft ice strengthened sailboat out into more open water. That meant I could then enjoy the noise of the ice scraping down the hull! Shot of me by Will West and sound by @zubinsarosh. To see us get really stuck, check out the killer whale episode of #AnimalsUpClose now streaming on Disney ! @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - This gathering contained 21 B1 Antarctic killer whales, 20% of the known population. We normally see this type of killer whale in small pods of 3-8 individuals so it was really special to so many come together. It felt like an extended family gathering as adults logged on the surface, gently touching their heads together while calves from different pods played. This moment latest less than 5 minutes and soon the pods headed off in different directions. I wonder what they communicated about? The part of the brain responsible for emotional processing is far bigger in killer whales than in humans. They also have an extra attachment in this area of the brain that we lack. It’s very possible they have emotional connections that we’ll never be able to comprehend. #AnimalsUpClose on Disney @wildstarfilms @natgeo

Bertie Gregory Instagram - Petaka update! Many of you have been asking what has happened to Petaka since we filmed with her for ‘Animals Up Close’. I’ve just had some exciting news from the tracking team. Her cubs ‘Frost’ and ‘Breeze’ successfully reached independence and are now off on their own. Bertie Gregory Instagram - Shark Vs Sea lion, who will win? If you had asked me prior to filming in the Galapagos for Animals Up Close (now streaming on Disney ), I would have bet on the shark every time. It turns out, it doesn’t always go the shark’s way. Any shark that came near these rocks in search of a sea lion meal would get chased away by this big bull. Despite being slow and clumsy on land, his speed and agility in shallow water was mind-blowing. Male sea lions are traditionally thought to have zero role in parental care but this territorial pup guarding behaviour could mean they occasionally lend a hand…or flipper. Bertie Gregory Instagram - These two shots never made the cut for our ‘Animals Up Close’ killer whale film so I’m glad I can share them with you here. Once again, Jedi skills from @tomwalkercam to predict where this killer whale would peek-a-boo for the water level perspective while I was over the top on the drone. @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Due to a long history of poaching and their thick jungle home, forest elephants understandably get very grumpy when they bump into humans. So if we were going to film them for any significant period of time, we needed to get off the forest floor. We also wanted an angle looking down the bai (the clearing where the elephants gather) so we could fit all the elephants in one frame. Our rope experts @meg_and_onaldson and @waldo_etherington rigged this amazing canopy camp allowing us to film, sleep and eat high in the trees as the elephants went about their business underneath us. Bertie Gregory Instagram - Meet Billy (a human) and Molly (a wild otter). Without a doubt the most wholesome film I’ve worked on. An amazing story about love, friends and our relationship with the natural world, beautifully crafted by Director @chamiltonjames and @silverback_films. A magic long lens moment caught by @johnnyrolt. #BillyAndMolly is now on @DisneyPlus in the U.S., other regions coming soon! #ottersofinstagram @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Wild dogs are seriously fast. They can run at speeds of more than 40mph. The pack we were following loved hunting warthogs. To our amazement, in a 100m sprint the warthogs were faster than the dogs! Any further and the dogs’ stamina was far superior. Once spotted, the warthog would dash to the nearest burrow. The race was simple, could the warthog get to a burrow within 100m? If not, could they find one before the dogs caught up? Ground level angle by @sams_natural_habitat, drone angle by @bertiegregory with some incredible guiding and vehicle positioning by @africa_on_film, @bwana_mike and @mjclaase. Shot for #AnimalsUpClose coming September 13th to Disney . @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Of all the pieces of ice this Adelie penguin could have chosen to hang out on, this piece was a bad decision. As soon as this enormous male B1 killer whale spotted this crabeater seal, he dropped down under the ice and called over the rest of the pod. Watch how fast the Adelie penguin checks out as the B1 family uses their signature wave-wash weapon to try and get the seal in the water! Water level view by @tomwalkercam and drone view by @bertiegregory for #AnimalsUpClose on Disney @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - I understand that some of you have tough time watching the wild dogs hunting. The pack’s territory is certainly not a good place to be Pumbaa (or more surprisingly a buffalo!). However, they must hunt to feed their 14 little pups. Twenty years ago, the African wild dog population was estimated at over 500,000. Due to conflict with humans, now less than 7000 remain making them one of Africa’s most endangered predators. So the survival of each of these pups is so important. Catch the whole story in ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney . @wildstarfilms @natgeo #AnimalsUpClose
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Elephant trunks are one of the most extraordinary pieces of biomechanical engineering. But while they are born with this amazing appendage capable of so many uses, they must learn to use it. This little forest elephant calf was definitely at the start of its learning curve! Bertie Gregory Instagram - Just as the emperor penguin chicks were hurling themselves off a cliff, we had an Adelie penguin tent inspector. Our camp was far from the sea and very, very far from the nearest Adelie penguin colony. Even so, this little fella managed to find us. Bertie Gregory Instagram - In Chilean Patagonia we were searching for one particular puma. Meet Petaka. When I first met her four years ago filming for David Attenborough’s ‘Seven Worlds, One Planet’, she was just a cub. She was cute, fluffy and totally reliant on her mother. Bertie Gregory Instagram - This confiscated elephant ivory and weapons store was the most depressing and upsetting thing I’ve seen while making wildlife films. The Eco-guards we met put their lives on the line to protect the last precious forest elephants. They are the real unsung heroes of conservation. This store is regularly moved and burned for security and to remove its value. Catch the whole story in the ‘Elephant Quest’ episode of ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney . Bertie Gregory Instagram - Petaka has two cubs that local trackers have named ‘Frost’ and ‘Breeze’. Over our 51 days of filming in Chile, the family took us on a physical and emotional rollercoaster that we can’t wait to share with you in #AnimalsUpClose coming to @disneyplus September 13th!

Bertie Gregory Instagram - A pack of just 10 African wild dogs take on a herd of 600 buffalo! An individual buffalo weighs up to 30 times the weight of a wild dog. The pack’s tenacity and teamwork were so impressive and following them was a real highlight of shooting ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney . Gyrostabilized ground level shot by @sams_natural_habitat and drone view by @bertiegregory. Next level guiding by @mjclaase @africa_on_film and @bwana_mike. @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - A group of Galapagos sea lions cooperatively heard fish into a magical little cove. What you can’t see in this video is that these sea lions originally located the school of fish over a half a mile away. As a team, they pushed the school up to the surface and through open water towards this cove. Some corralled from the left, some from the right and some from underneath. It was epic to witness sea lions collaborating so perfectly to use the land as a tool. It was also fun to see the brown pelicans had the whole thing figured out and flew ahead of the sea lions to grab an easy meal on the beach. The mammal intelligence was clear but we’re also going to need to rethink the phrase ‘bird-brained’! Water level angle by @sams_natural_habitat, drone angle by @bertiegregory, high angle by @annadimitriadis and remote camera work by @javier_mahauad, sound by @justdrewsound and music by @simonnpittmusic and @__willhyde__ . Filmed for the ‘Galapagos Marvels’ episode of ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney ! #AnimalsUpClose
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Any time you see a big group of seals hanging out together on sea ice in Antarctica, chances are they’re crabeater seals. In fact, there are so many in Antarctica, crabeaters are the most numerous seal species on earth. Their name is misleading though as they mainly eat krill (look for the pink poo stains!). Bertie Gregory Instagram - Who’s seen the wild dog episode of #AnimalsUpClose on Disney ? Pictured is the magical pack we followed in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Here, the pack were returning to the den to greet their 14 tiny pups and the adult babysitter they’d left behind. I love how excited wild dogs are when they meet back up with other members of their pack. Awesome vehicle positioning and dog mindreading by @bwana_mike. Sound recording by @justdrewsound. @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - This poor little elephant calf was missing half of her trunk. We don’t know how she lost it, but it was likely either from a predator or a wire snare (a trap laid by poachers to catch antelope). Elephant trunks are one of the most extraordinary pieces of biomechanical engineering. Because the trunk is so crucial to an elephant’s life, losing half of it is a big problem for this calf. However, there is a glimmer of hope. I once filmed a much older elephant in Zambia with the same injury. He had learned to get by despite his disability so fingers crossed this calf will do the same. Filmed in @dzanga.sangha National Park.
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Meet Ngbanda Bathelomie, our BaAka guide in the Central African Republic. Without Ngbanda, I would have been trampled multiple times by forest elephants. If by some miracle I survived the trampling, I definitely would have gotten lost in the dense jungle. His sense of direction and knowledge of the forest inhabitants was truly mind-blowing. A real highlight of my time with Ngbanda was his reaction to flying the drone. His cheeky smile is the best. Filmed in @dzanga.sangha National Park for the ‘Elephant Quest’ episode of ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney ! #AnimalsUpClose @wildstarfilms @natgeotv

Bertie Gregory Instagram - A totally ridiculous few days in LA 🤯. @emrata, you’ve got to do a collab with Petaka. Big thanks to @natgeotv @c_albert press team for giving the series such a big push! #AnimalsUpClose @disneyplus
Bertie Gregory Instagram - This was one of the coolest commutes I’ve had to work. Connecting the canopy camp with my filming platform was a 300ft/100m highline. This is like a really fun ‘zipline’ for the first half but then a not very fun bicep-burning second half. It meant I could keep my scent high off the forest floor away from the elephants. Amazing rigging by @waldo_etherington and @meg_and_onaldson. Filmed for #AnimalsUpClose in @dzanga.sangha National Park. @wildstarfilms @natgeotv @remoteropes

Bertie Gregory Instagram - A crazy night for team Animals Up Close! We picked up two Emmys for ‘Outstanding Cinematography’ and ‘Outstanding Travel, Adventure and Nature Program’. Congrats and thank you to the all guides, scientists, mountaineers, divers, boat captains and camera crews around the world and to our amazing production team back home at @wildstarfilms. Plus of course thank you to all the team at @natgeo and @disneyplus championing the project. Thanks @daytimeemmys for a big boost as we start filming for the next season! #emmys2024
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Forest elephants are classified as critically endangered due to an 86% population decline in a period of just 31 years. They are poached for their ivory and if this doesn’t stop, they will go extinct. The rarest of the remaining forest elephants are the tuskers – enormous males with tusks that reach down to the floor. Our goal was to film one and we thought we had failed. Maybe they were all gone? We discovered the truth on our last day when we went to go and check the camera traps.

The camera trapping element for the ‘Elephant Quest’ episode of Animals Up Close on Disney was a huge team effort with some amazing work by Dave Mothershaw, Declan Burley and critical knowledge from our BaAka guides. #AnimalsUpClose @wildstarfilms @natgeo @dzanga.sangha
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Teamwork makes the dream work – for sea lions and for film crews. We planned 15 days to film these sea lions hunting in this magical little cove. We thought it might only happen once so wanted as many angles as possible on the action. Here’s how we did it! Water level angle by @sams_natural_habitat, drone angle by @bertiegregory, high cliff angle by @annnadimitriadis, remote camera work by @javiermahauad and underwater by @jeffbhester! BTS by @jamesnbrickell, @rakeldawnh and @justdrewsound. Sea lion spotting by @jackiesteph! Bertie Gregory Instagram - If you enjoyed that last cooperative hunting sea lion video, here’s a little more info on the magical island where they live. Filmed for the ‘Galapagos Marvels’ episode of ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney ! #AnimalsUpClose @natgeo @wildstarfilms
Bertie Gregory Instagram - I’ve been fortunate enough to use thermal imaging technology to see into the darkness several times. Wolves hunting red deer in Italy, puma-sheepdog interactions in Patagonia, but seeing elephant ears was the most bizarre. To keep cool, elephants shunt blood to the huge network of blood vessels in their ears. It was fascinating to see how these blood vessel networks differed in each elephant. These unique patterns (like a fingerprint) can even be used to identify individuals. Filmed in @dzanga.sangha National Park for the ‘Elephant Quest’ episode of ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney ! With @markmcc01 and @justdrewsound. #AnimalsUpClose @wildstarfilms @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Watching Molly effortlessly zoom upstream in these rapids was mind-blowing. A real pleasure cross shooting her from two angles with @johnnyrolt on the ground level perspective. Lovely words by Susan Mail. #BillyAndMolly is now on @DisneyPlus in the U.S., other regions coming soon! #ottersofinstagram @silverback_films @natgeo
Bertie Gregory Instagram - Exciting to see the Antarctic killer whales continuing to make waves. My first feature story for @natgeo Magazine is out in the November issue! Big thanks to my editors @alexa_keefe and @julie_hau and great writing for the story by @natashadaly. These images were a huge team effort so thanks to @wildstarfilms, the ‘Animals Up Close’ team, @leighhickmott and the BBC Frozen Planet 2 team (who I learned a huge amount with on my first trip to find these killer whales). I also owe so much to my mentors @kfmoran and @stevewinterphoto who first welcomed me into the @natgeo Magazine family. Stoked that the killer whales are alongside @renan_ozturk ‘s crazy sub-Antarctic lava lake story shot using the same boat team @oceanexpeditions! Finally, shoutout to my roommate @silaselliott for some magnificent page turning and yes, we filmed this in our pyjamas. #AnimalsUpClose
Bertie Gregory Instagram - As well as getting to hang out with cool animals for ‘Animals Up Close’ on Disney , we also get to hang out with cool people. Ayub is one of the rangers safeguarding the Misool Marine Reserve. His antipoaching watch tower is definitely in the running for the world’s coolest office competition! This area used to be rife with dynamite fishing and shark fining. Twenty years ago however, the local community came together to setup this reserve. Today, this 500-square-mile marine protected area is thriving. Catch the whole story in the ‘Devil Ray Islands’ episode of Animals Up Close @wildstarfilms @natgeo

Bertie Gregory Instagram - To have any chance of finding a huge tusker forest elephant, we knew our stakeout at the bai would need to go into the night. This incredible thermal imaging camera allowed us to see into the darkness. Large animals in hot places have a tough time keeping cool enough. But do you know how elephants manage it? Comment below! Bertie Gregory Instagram - #CanopyCampLife! Our rope experts @waldo_etherington and @meg_and_onaldson rigged this tree house allowing us to film, sleep and eat high in the trees as the elephants went about their business underneath us. Due to a long history of poaching and their thick jungle home, forest elephants understandably get very grumpy when they bump into humans. So by staying off the forest floor, we could film while the elephants did their thing undisturbed. Also featured in these pics is director @markmcc01 and sound recordist @justdrewsound.

Many people seem to be very curious as to how we went to the bathroom. It involved a bag, good balance, good aim and careful positioning of the climbing harness straps! Supporting us in the trees, we owe a huge thanks to the local team who put in some serious heavy lifting helping carry in and out the jungle all the ropes, filming platforms and hanging tents. More on them soon! Bertie Gregory Instagram - A nice refreshing stroll down the river in @dzanga.sangha National Park. So many amazing sights, smells and sounds, all the while being at the ready for a surprise elephant charge! These stimuli were important distractions from the parasitic worms that could be crawling into our feet. I managed to come away unscathed but others weren’t quite so lucky. Leading the way is Ngbanda and Eric. Ngbanda I introduced in a previous post and Eric is part of the ‘Ecoguards’ tasked with protecting the wildlife from poaching. Both legends. Bertie Gregory - 2.2 Million Likes - Filmed for the very first time by @bertiegregory, emperor penguin chicks leap off a 50-foot ice cliff to take their first swim!

Learn more about this behavior at the link in bio and stay tuned for more: These penguins are getting their own show! From executive producer @jamescameronofficial, “Secrets of the Penguins,” is coming in 2025! 🐧 #OnlyNatGeo #ourHOME

Bertie Gregory - 648.3K Likes - Wildlife filmmaker @bertiegregory shares not only what he was thinking when filming Petaka the puma taking on a guanaco near Torres del Paine National Park, in Chile, but also an exciting update about Petaka and her cubs!

Petaka has been seen mating with a couple of different males, meaning that in a few months’ time, she’ll hopefully have another litter!” #OnlyNatGeo Watch #AnimalsUpClose now streaming on @disneyplus to learn more about Petaka, her cubs, and other incredible wildlife. Some of you asked on my last video, ‘why are you wearing a mask?’ It’s because we humans are so similar to gorillas (we share about 98% of our DNA!), we are capable of giving them our airborne diseases. Bertie Gregory - 91.1K Likes - Wildlife filmmaker @bertiegregory documented emperor penguin chicks preparing to take their first plunge from the top of an Antarctic ice shelf that towered roughly 50 feet above the sea. They crowded like a group of teenagers, as if waiting to see if someone was brave enough to jump into the water first. Once one did, the others followed.

“We’d seen multiple groups of chicks walking out in this direction, but due to the undulating icy terrain and a dangerous crevasse field, we were unable to follow them on snowmobile or on foot.

Bertie Gregory - 42.5K Likes - A pod of wave-washing killer whales hunt three crabeater seals at once.

As a cameraperson, I find it often helps during action sequences to disconnect emotionally from the subject to concentrate on keeping whatever they’re doing in focus and in frame. As I first met Petaka as a little cub, that tactic went out the window! Caption : Loving your love for Petaka, the star of ‘Animals Up Close’ Episode 1 now streaming on @disneyplus! As a cameraperson, I find it often helps during action sequences to disconnect emotionally from the subject to concentrate on keeping whatever they’re doing in focus and in frame. As I first met Petaka as a little cub, that tactic went out the window! The adults are less so and during the heat of the day tend to lounge around on the beach. Many sea lion species are thigmotactic meaning essentially, they like hugs (from other sea lions, definitely not people). Despite the baking heat, we often saw them lined up together in rows. After being introduced by Billy, I had some epic sessions in the water with Molly.

The pack’s territory is certainly not a good place to be Pumbaa (or more surprisingly a buffalo!). However, they must hunt to feed their 14 little pups. Twenty years ago, the African wild dog population was estimated at over 500,000. Due to conflict with humans, now less than 7000 remain making them one of Africa’s most endangered predators. So the survival of each of these pups is so important. Catch the whole story in ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney . @wildstarfilms @natgeo #AnimalsUpClose

Four years on, she has not only survived but has also become a powerful mother herself. Photo by @annadimitriadis for #AnimalsUpClose coming to @disneyplus September 13th! @wildstarfilms @natgeo

Today, this 500-square-mile marine protected area is thriving. Catch the whole story in the ‘Devil Ray Islands’ episode of Animals Up Close @wildstarfilms @natgeo

Bertie Gregory - 9.2K Likes - To have any chance of finding a huge tusker forest elephant, we knew our stakeout at the bai would need to go into the night. This incredible thermal imaging camera allowed us to see into the darkness. Large animals in hot places have a tough time keeping cool enough. But do you know how elephants manage it? Comment below! Filmed in @dzanga.sangha National Park for the ‘Elephant Quest’ episode of ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney ! #AnimalsUpClose @wildstarfilms @natgeotv

Bertie Gregory - 8.4K Likes - #CanopyCampLife!

Bertie Gregory - 8.3K Likes - A nice refreshing stroll down the river in @dzanga.sangha National Park. Filmed for the ‘Elephant Quest’ episode of ‘Animals Up Close’ now streaming on Disney . #AnimalsUpClose @wildstarfilms @natgeotv
