Blair Underwood Instagram - RIP King! In mourning the passing of the incomparable Harry Belafonte, I am reminded of the passing of an era and another legend, his dear friend Sir Sidney Poitier. The last time I saw these two icons together, in standing next to them I was reminded of how they were undeniable ‘giants’ both literally and figuratively. I never felt short until standing next to them. Lol. Harry Belafonte was a beacon of light, love and a warrior for justice, who inspired me more than he could ever have known in addition to millions of people all over the world. Blair Underwood Instagram - SAG STRIKE: I’ve been a card-carrying SAG member since the mid-80s & I proudly stand in solidarity with my colleagues in SAG & the WGA who are now on strike. 95% of our SAG members are unemployed @ any given time. 92% of our active members earn less than $80,000 a year, and 86% don't have the union's health insurance, meaning they make less than the $26,000 a year required to qualify. .04% become famous. This strike is not a case of the ‘rich & famous’ demanding a pound of flesh from the rich studio system. This strike is in fact, a case of our SAG Union membership & labor force being able to earn & sustain a living wage that has become increasingly difficult with the proliferation of streaming. Streaming alone has completely upended the business model of how those of us (writers, directors, actors & others) are compensated for creating the content that is bought & sold all over the world. Another major issue is AI (Artificial Intelligence). If anyone can manipulate & profit from your likeness, image, sound of your voice etc., without consideration or compensation, we should all be scared. Blair Underwood Instagram - Still trying to process the loss of my dear, dear friend from our hometown of Petersburg, VA. Her name is Marva Hicks and she transitioned last week to a better place than here. She was a giant in my eyes. When I had to leave college unexpectedly, & decided to move to NY and pursue acting, I had no idea where or how to start. She came over to our family home, sat down @ our kitchen table and walked me through how to create a résumé, an 8 x 10 headshot of myself and all of the pitfalls, pros and cons of moving to New York and pursuing an acting career. Marva was an industry pro, who worked in tv, Broadway, radio and virtually every medium. We inspired & encouraged each other through these many years. This photo was taken the last time I saw her and her husband, Akwasi, in 2020 when she came backstage after a performance of A SOLDIER’S PLAY on Broadway 🎭. She taught me that Broadway, a career in the arts & dreams were possible. All I had to do was follow her lead! You can Rest In Peace now my friend. You are missed, loved & eternally celebrated & remembered!
