Bojana Novaković Instagram - A major showdown over the climate crisis is taking place right now in a small country in Europe. As usual, large US media outlets are silent. I am urging everyone to pay attention; the photos tell much of the story.

In Serbia, a country of only 6.6 million, hundreds of thousands of citizens have taken to the streets in recent days to demand the cancellation of a new lithium mine that the notorious corporate human rights abuser Rio Tinto wants to build in an area of fertile farmland in the western part of the country. A broad coalition of Serbian scientists has concluded the mine would cause irreversible ecological catastrophe. Water would be poisoned. Hundreds of family farms would be sacrificed. It is highly unusual for such a large proportion of a nation’s citizens to stage sustained protests over a single fossil fuel project. The photos in the carousel were shot in recent days in Belgrade, the nation’s capital where I believe at least 15% of the city’s population was on the streets.

This is a compelling example of what citizen power can be, and must do. It is what industry and corrupt governments fear most. And it’s deeply inspiring to witness.

I want to thank Bojana Novokovic - one of the Serbian protest leaders whose picture is in the carousel — for calling this to my attention. (I met @bojnovak on this platform during my Chevron-orchestrated detention over the company’s Amazon pollution.) Also want to give a shout-out to @mar_sa_drine, the extraordinary grassroots organization in Belgrade that has been leading the opposition to Rio Tinto’s mine.

Rio Tinto is a greedy Anglo-Australian company that has a long history of major human rights abuses across the globe in places like Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and California. (See the website of the London Mining Network for documentation.) Serbian President Vucic - a strongman who reportedly stole the last election - is playing jiu jitsu with the protestors by first cancelling the project and then reinstating it. Dozens of protesters have been arrested.

Solidarity with @mars_sa_drine and @bojnovak. Asking
@nytimes and @cnn: you going to cover this deeply impressive display of citizen power? 👊👊

Bojana Novaković Instagram - “We will attack Rio Tinto’s project with all the legal means at our disposal, and given the amount of legally dubious moves by them & the Government of Serbia we will have a lot of means.”

I spoke to @novinska_agencija_beta about the reinstatement RT’s lithium mine’s legal status.

According to Novakovic, this is another in a series of indicators that independent & functional institutions no longer exist in Serbia. “Each institution works in the service of the ruling party & for the interests of foreign corporations supported by that party.” Asked what would be the consequences of the eventual opening of a lithium mine, she said that fertile land would be destroyed & water sources poisoned.

“In the end we would end up a mining colony & a sacrifice zone on the periphery of Europe.” She added that much more serious consequences concern the problem of the climate crisis, “which will only worsen with the opening of new mines. We are in the midst of an extreme heat wave. It will get worse every year. Thousands of Serbian citizens have been without water for days because the heat wave has caused huge consumption & sources cannot handle it. The residents of Krivelj had their water cut off & diverted to the [ZiJin] mine. This clearly sends a message that people need to be silent but the mine will keep operating. On top of that chaos we’re talking about adding a lithium mine that consumes over 5,000 tons of water per day just for processing ore. Mines are not the solution to the climate crisis. Maintaining fertile land like the Jadar valley is the solution.”

She reminded us that that three years ago “there were large blockades in the cities and we managed to halt the project, at least temporarily. If the government thinks we’ll surrender peacefully & let them ravage our country, then they don’t know the people. We are even more furious now. They can only expect even more radical actions from us.”

Commenting on the visit of German Chancellor @bundeskanzler and Vice President of the
@europeancommission  @maros.sefcovic regarding the agreement on Critical Raw Materials, Novaković said they will be welcomed grandly. “But they will return to Europe empty-handed.”

3. Takodje maltretiraju Nikolu Ristic i njegovu porodicu.

Our friend was arrested and we could not get in touch with him for over an hour today. The local police in Gornji Milanovac kept him at the request of Belgrade police after he came in to make a statement about an attempted sabotage of the protest he was speaking at. He was detained without a lawyer and without his phone, which they confiscated. He is now out thank God but these arrests today mean only one thing. The youth of this movement are scaring the criminal government!!!

🇬🇧 These past few months have been crazy, we have missed sharing so many things.

In November, Bojana went to Argentina and met with the Indigenous communities affected by lithium mines. We’re looking forward to working together in the new year.

A few weeks ago our allies from Europe protested and handed out letters in at Critical Raw Materials Week.

A week later, people in London left a greeting at the Rio Tinto office, in solidarity with our movement and the current protests against corruption in Serbia.

Today we released our joint complaint against Rio Tinto’s request to receive strategic status under the CRMA, put together with the amazing team from Berlin, Green Legal Impact.

We are chasing out tails trying to get all this information out to you but it’s been so busy we can barely keep up! We hope you all have a nice break over the new year. See you in the new year to kick more extractivist ass. #marssadrine

Bojana Novaković Instagram - Meeting up with my favorite human rights advocate @stevendonziger at our favorite NY restaurant @kafananyc and talking about all the good trouble we’re about to make in the name of environmental justice. I met Steven and his amazing family while he was still under house arrest in 2021 for being too good at his job and winning a massive case against Chevron in 🇪🇨 Ecuador. (If you don’t know Steven’s story I recommend @the_real_erin_brockovich’s article in The Guardian. It covers the case against him in the greatest detail.) Since then, Steven has been a supporter and mentor - particularly for us in our work with @mars_sa_drine in Serbia against Rio Tinto’s proposed lithium mine in the Jadar Valley. Can’t wait to get our hands ever more dirty on this journey toward restorative environmental Justice.

Bojana Novaković - 7.1K Likes - A major showdown over the climate crisis is taking place right now in a small country in Europe.

Bojana Novaković - 4.9K Likes - “We will attack Rio Tinto’s project with all the legal means at our disposal, and given the amount of legally dubious moves by them & the Government of Serbia we will have a lot of means.”

See you in the new year to kick more extractivist ass. #marssadrine

Bojana Novaković - 3.1K Likes - Meeting up with my favorite human rights advocate @stevendonziger at our favorite NY restaurant @kafananyc and talking about all the good trouble we’re about to make in the name of environmental justice.
