Caption : There’s an unmistakable magic at the foot of these Giant Sequoias… that comes with 3000 years of age, wisdom with such a large amount of life lived. It makes our lifespan seem like a blip in comparison and I often wonder about all that’s happened underneath their branches. This time it happened to be an assignment for @natgeo capturing these beautiful trees in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park. We’re fortunate to have these intentional places to preserve the older parts of the world that are sometimes forgotten but encourage a healthy state of wonder & calmLikes : 264198

Caption : The colder corners of the world often escape our attention when considering waves to seek out and hopefully surf. Sometimes in the moment, when it’s dark, freezing, and the only thing standing between you & good waves is a wet wetsuit and a snowy parking lot, you don’t want to go through the discomfort of changing out… but without a doubt, the small sacrifice leads to greater memories, happines, and sometimes even an art form that hopefully inspires others to do the same. These memories from a surf expedition in Iceland, 2021, for @billabong were no exception… but certainly worth the effort that led us to empty lineups accompanied only by adjacent peaks and an occasional whale sighting.Likes : 32524

Caption : Unstad, Norway I was 26 with my first kid on the way… my wife was almost due and I decided to take one more job shooting surf in Norway before my son came. My life up to that point had been singularly focused on my career – booking back to back jobs around the globe and I hadn’t really taken a moment to look over my shoulder. Knowing it was my last shoot for the next few months, I pushed myself extra hard… spending more time in the icy waters causing frost nip in my hands & nerve damage that I still deal with to this day. There’s a lot more to unpack from this trip but I look back at the images with a palpable memory of my time there and the feeling life would never be the same when I got homeLikes : 30148

Caption : Over the last week, I’ve been filming First Take: Season 2 around my old stomping grounds here in California’s Central Coast… I felt like it’s important to show places that are sometimes overlooked for visiting, especially one that played such a huge part in my career back in the days when I lived in my truck and was borrowing telephoto lenses to shoot surf. Since aerial photography is a passion of mine, I decided to share that perspective with @rachel_jones_ross and we scored one of the best sunsets I’ve seen in years, serving as a reminder of how special & idyllic this little corner of the world can be.Likes : 26466

Caption : I’m fortunate in my life that moments of awe & wonder tend to happen rather frequently and I find lots of excitement in each of them… but sometimes the deeper meaning comes later upon reflection that inevitably happens this time of year for me. Here are a few of those of moments from 2023, the only thing better than the experience is getting to share it with others real time or in the form of photography… something that continues to be special every year that passes by. #NatGeoPOY23Likes : 25513

Passion projects don’t always pay the bills and as a freelancer, you take on work that isn’t necessarily the most inspiring to keep your business alive & feed your family – I still do to this day. Even though this type of work isn’t the most exciting like surfing under the northern lights or riding a bike across glaciers in Iceland.. it can still be a lot of fun and I have the utmost respect for creatives who dedicate their craft to this part of the industry. 1: Duracell, 2015 2: Corona, 2012 3: Toyota, 2013 4: AirBnB, 2017 5: Apple, 2014 6: GoalZero, 2014 7: PrAna, 2017 8: Coors, 2018 9: Billabong, 2021Likes : 24470

Caption : If you embrace the chaos found in the fringes of your creativity… you may be surprised at what you find there. For me, it was discovering an unexpected story that eventually became Under An Arctic Sky – a film I never intended to make but when the story started to unfold in front of me, I knew it was one I couldn’t ignore. Creatives & business owners will usually find that the path is a little more lonely than you think, filled with projects & tasks that you are solely responsible for, often difficult to maintain… but when the call of creativity beckons it’s one I feel is essential to follow. These are a few still photography moments from the film – You can watch Under An Arctic Sky on Redbull TVLikes : 24435

Caption : “Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the universe is always one step beyond logic.” Frank Herbert – Dune I truly respect and find necessary the scientific approach of trying to define and understand different aspects of life… like what causes a delicate and harsh ecosystem like Death Valley to stay in balance or a coral reef to thrive. But I also find that sometimes that desire can be limiting and sometimes narrows my ability to allow the mystical aspect of nature to speak to me. Surprisingly enough, the less I try to listen/find out and more energy I put towards being in the present – I hear more of what the world is saying to me. The desert is one of those places that feels a little more thin between a mystical and the real… somewhere I’ll keep coming back to. Caption : It’s wild to consider the amount of life these mountains have witnessed throughout different chapters in the history of the world… Hannibal leading the Carthaginian army across the alps in 218 BC to the development of alpinism and years of brave people ticking off first ascents with only rudimentary gear and a strong will. Every time I set foot in them.. it invites a way of life that encourages constant awareness without distraction. You have to pay attention to your surroundings but you also feel at peace with that rhythm of life – something I find harder to achieve surrounded by man made structures. These images come from 2016 on a perfect day in the Swiss alps.. gazing down at Lake Ritom with a bit of disbelief at our luck finding a glassy lake with a backdrop more like a painting than reality…Likes : 23605

Caption : Alaska, 2020 on assignment for @billabong just before the pandemic We had taken a boat to a rivermouth in search for a wedge I’d heard about breaking near the rock formations. After some fruitful waves, I put up a drone to capture a more expansive angle and to my surprise, we found a bush plane parked on the beach. Evidently, that little stretch of coastline served as a runway for the inhabitants of the little cabin just overlooking the shores. It really struck me in that moment how off the grid people really live… the only way you can access is by firing up a cessna, crossing a river via kayak, and going home to a little home that you built with your own hands. Alaska is still a frontier in so many ways… one of those places that’ll change you every time you visitLikes : 23292

I was ready to share another one of those “end of the year- best photograph’s I’ve ever shot” type of posts – but that didn’t feel quite honest. I look back at 2023 with immense gratitude for these two very important people – my mom & grandpa who both have survived cancer. Between them they have had 20 surgeries and endless complications to the point where only in the last few weeks has my mom been able to leave her house after almost 3 years. To see them both happy and healthy, out in public and celebrating a wedding no less has taught me what it means to be resilient and truly cherish and Fight for life. Needless to say, at one point, I worried I wouldn’t be able to celebrate anything with these two ever again. Most of my life’s subtle “wins” over the last years have been dulled by knowing that those I love most cannot be apart of it…so this moment felt truly special. Happy New Years. Taking a moment to be quiet and allow the sounds of wildlife to resume and being disturbed by your presence really gives you a window into the vast amount of life in this particular ecosystem. Last fall, I was fortunate enough to spend an evening underneath these giants, documenting them in all conditions during an assignment for @natgeo … sometimes those type of nights camping in the truck eating freeze dried food are the best… keeping you a little more connected to the nature you’re out to document and open to immersing yourself in special place like this one.Likes : 21230

Caption : The over/under shot is a classic in surf & underwater photography, not an easy one to accomplish but provides a “through the looking glass” sort of perspective I think is important when contextualizing a sport or landscape that extends beneath the surface. Having spent countless hours lugging a housing around the world and taking my fair share of waves to the head for an angle I wanted – I always appreciate how much skill goes into to pulling off these kinds of images. This particular trip – Mallorca 2018, I wanted to show off both ends of deep water soloing, both the ascent & swim after that make the sport both unique but beautiful to capture & I felt that the over/under was the best approach.Likes : 20862

I shot up and down these shores well before I was a professional photographer… Up every morning at the crack of dawn hoping to get the quintessential surf photograph on a huge winter swell. I took one my best friends @ellithor on a sunset flight so he could see this part of the world from my favorite perspective… and I’m sure I’ll keep coming back here throughout my life.Likes : 19435

Setting foot in a such a unique corner of the world felt surreal after being inspired by a climbing film all those years ago but I was truly excited to have an adventure of my own.Likes : 18582

Caption : I heard someone say recently that when we invest in the natural world, it doesn’t give back to us in monetary ways but offers returns that are far more valuable & regenerative to the mind & body than money could ever be… and I couldn’t agree more. Whether you’re drawn to a quick ray of sunshine in your backyard or a multi-day expedition to the Aleutian islands.. I think it’s important to pause for a moment and listen to that call from nature and make the time in our lives to answer. Flipping through the archives from this particular expedition in 2019 for @roark brings out that feeling in me… a sort of ache for the unknown and inspiration for discomfort that leads to a kind of beauty & self reflection only harsh places like these provide. @natezoller @parkercoffin @harrisonsan @_ryanhill_ @roarkLikes : 18273

I texted my assistant @joelbarger_ from the top of the mountain – who grabbed our long lens and nailed the shot just looking over the bay not far from our new studio. It’s moments like this in Iceland that continue to amaze me… a juxtaposition of normal life and sometimes devastating elements, locals continuing their day like any other Thursday but a beautiful fiery chaos erupts less than 45 minutes away.Likes : 18075

Caption : Growing up, California was mainly sunny beaches and coastal living to me – but as I got older and started to venture outside of my hometown of Arroyo grande, I started to realize that the State actually has a few really distinct ecosystems that captivated my attention. In 2017, I decided to take an 8 day road trip to dive deeper & spend some quality time climbing, surfing, and hiking to understand the diversity in a more immersive way. I jumped in an old VW bus, with some friends and made our way to Alabama Hills to climb and camp in the desert. After a couple of nights, we moved on to the forests at the foot of the Sierra Nevada… home to some of the biggest trees in the world and continued to the northern sections of coastline to surf colder waters bordered by wetter, lush forests. Even though I’ve spent a ton of time exploring California, I still love finding new details in these ecosystems and will keep exploring them as long as I can. Shot for @prana 2017Likes : 17691

Caption : Stretching between the shores of Alaska and Russia, this chain of 14 volcanoes and 55 smaller land masses make up what is known as the Aleutian Islands… one of the most remote and difficult landscapes I’ve photographed – due to the harsh storms the frequent the Bering sea that often shrouds them in thick clouds & fog. In the past, I had set out to these islands with the goal of surfing in mind.. but in 2018, I received a grant from Conservation International to document the Alaska Maritime Wildlife Refuge – focusing more on showing the scope of the landscape and it’s largely undisturbed beauty. We caught a window in the weather – so I grabbed my camera & jumped in a small plane… resulting in some of the most unforgettable aerial views of my career.Likes : 17553
