It makes our lifespan seem like a blip in comparison and I often wonder about all that’s happened underneath their branches. This time it happened to be an assignment for @natgeo capturing these beautiful trees in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park. We’re fortunate to have these intentional places to preserve the older parts of the world that are sometimes forgotten but encourage a healthy state of wonder & calm

My life up to that point had been singularly focused on my career - booking back to back jobs around the globe and I hadn’t really taken a moment to look over my shoulder. Knowing it was my last shoot for the next few months, I pushed myself extra hard… spending more time in the icy waters causing frost nip in my hands & nerve damage that I still deal with to this day. There’s a lot more to unpack from this trip but I look back at the images with a palpable memory of my time there and the feeling life would never be the same when I got home

Chris Burkard Instagram - “Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the universe is always one step beyond logic.” Frank Herbert - Dune I truly respect and find necessary the scientific approach of trying to define and understand different aspects of life… like what causes a delicate and harsh ecosystem like Death Valley to stay in balance or a coral reef to thrive. But I also find that sometimes that desire can be limiting and sometimes narrows my ability to allow the mystical aspect of nature to speak to me. Surprisingly enough, the less I try to listen/find out and more energy I put towards being in the present - I hear more of what the world is saying to me. The desert is one of those places that feels a little more thin between a mystical and the real… somewhere I’ll keep coming back to. Chris Burkard Instagram - Alaska, 2020 on assignment for @billabong just before the pandemic We had taken a boat to a rivermouth in search for a wedge I’d heard about breaking near the rock formations. After some fruitful waves, I put up a drone to capture a more expansive angle and to my surprise, we found a bush plane parked on the beach. Evidently, that little stretch of coastline served as a runway for the inhabitants of the little cabin just overlooking the shores. It really struck me in that moment how off the grid people really live... the only way you can access is by firing up a cessna, crossing a river via kayak, and going home to a little home that you built with your own hands. Alaska is still a frontier in so many ways... one of those places that’ll change you every time you visit

I was ready to share another one of those “end of the year- best photograph’s I’ve ever shot” type of posts - but that didn’t feel quite honest. I look back at 2023 with immense gratitude for these two very important people - my mom & grandpa who both have survived cancer. Between them they have had 20 surgeries and endless complications to the point where only in the last few weeks has my mom been able to leave her house after almost 3 years. To see them both happy and healthy, out in public and celebrating a wedding no less has taught me what it means to be resilient and truly cherish and Fight for life. Needless to say, at one point, I worried I wouldn’t be able to celebrate anything with these two ever again. Most of my life’s subtle “wins” over the last years have been dulled by knowing that those I love most cannot be apart of it…so this moment felt truly special. Happy New Years. Hug someone you love

Chris Burkard Instagram - The over/under shot is a classic in surf & underwater photography, not an easy one to accomplish but provides a “through the looking glass” sort of perspective I think is important when contextualizing a sport or landscape that extends beneath the surface. Having spent countless hours lugging a housing around the world and taking my fair share of waves to the head for an angle I wanted - I always appreciate how much skill goes into to pulling off these kinds of images. This particular trip - Mallorca 2018, I wanted to show off both ends of deep water soloing, both the ascent & swim after that make the sport both unique but beautiful to capture & I felt that the over/under was the best approach.
Chris Burkard Instagram - I grew up driving this stretch of coastline in my beat up truck, inspired by the significant relief of the peaks eventually brushing with the shores of the Pacific Ocean. I shot up and down these shores well before I was a professional photographer… Up every morning at the crack of dawn hoping to get the quintessential surf photograph on a huge winter swell. I took one my best friends @ellithor on a sunset flight so he could see this part of the world from my favorite perspective… and I’m sure I’ll keep coming back here throughout my life.

In 2017, I decided to take an 8 day road trip to dive deeper & spend some quality time climbing, surfing, and hiking to understand the diversity in a more immersive way. I jumped in an old VW bus, with some friends and made our way to Alabama Hills to climb and camp in the desert. After a couple of nights, we moved on to the forests at the foot of the Sierra Nevada… home to some of the biggest trees in the world and continued to the northern sections of coastline to surf colder waters bordered by wetter, lush forests. After some fruitful waves, I put up a drone to capture a more expansive angle and to my surprise, we found a bush plane parked on the beach. Evidently, that little stretch of coastline served as a runway for the inhabitants of the little cabin just overlooking the shores. It really struck me in that moment how off the grid people really live… the only way you can access is by firing up a cessna, crossing a river via kayak, and going home to a little home that you built with your own hands. Caption : Growing up, California was mainly sunny beaches and coastal living to me – but as I got older and started to venture outside of my hometown of Arroyo grande, I started to realize that the State actually has a few really distinct ecosystems that captivated my attention. In 2017, I decided to take an 8 day road trip to dive deeper & spend some quality time climbing, surfing, and hiking to understand the diversity in a more immersive way. I jumped in an old VW bus, with some friends and made our way to Alabama Hills to climb and camp in the desert. After a couple of nights, we moved on to the forests at the foot of the Sierra Nevada… home to some of the biggest trees in the world and continued to the northern sections of coastline to surf colder waters bordered by wetter, lush forests. Even though I’ve spent a ton of time exploring California, I still love finding new details in these ecosystems and will keep exploring them as long as I can. Shot for @prana 2017
