D. Smith Instagram - On Tuesday night, Rasheeda Williams was shot and killed in Atlanta. Rasheeda, aka Koko Da Doll, was the latest victim of violence against Black transgender women. I created Kokomo City because I wanted to show the fun, humanized, natural side of Black trans women. I wanted to create images that didnā€™t show the trauma or the statistics of murder of Transgender lives. I wanted to create something fresh and inspiring. I did that. We did that! But here we are again. Itā€™s extremely difficult to process Kokoā€™s passing, but as a team we are more encouraged now than ever to inspire the world with her story. To show how beautiful and full of life she was. She will inspire generations to come and will never be forgotten.ā€

D. Smith Instagram - WOW! Close to four years when I finally released this Country/Blues song ā€œThatā€™s Why I Love Youā€ After writing it in 2000! (Crazy). I wrote this song when I was singing in the NY Subway for a living. Jumping turnstiles and being ran away from the cops cause I didnā€™t have a permit lol. It was really tough singing in the Subway but gratifying as well. In 2005 I was able to record it. I held on to it until COVID 2020. šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø Today as a filmmaker, I look back on ALL of the sacrifices and dedication it took to be here. Missed out on birthdays, funerals, lifeā€¦. Some moments Iā€™m not too proud of. Im working on me though. Making me better by forgiving myself first. Remembering Iā€™m a human just being. The point of this post is: IM BLESSED! YOURE blessed! So many of our black children grow up afraid and confused because of traditional values or admissible violence against them. Sometimes leading to death. Before starting this project, I reached out to 5 directors asking if they would help film this project, they all said no. I went out and bought a camera and a really nice lens and filmed it myself. No assistant, no lighting person, no editor. Just the vision of a truth.
