And that so-call “progressives” would support the perpetrators and supporters of terrorism @columbia. I am in utter shock. I’ve been a New Yorker my entire life and I have never ever seen such unbridled and violent Jew hatred on our streets.

As many of you know I tried to get my grandmother’s Holocaust testimony which she could not, until her dying day, ever utter. The experience of never knowing was made into an award winning short film called OMA starring Lynn Cohen on @primevideo. Tova and her grandson are my heroes. Every day on the clock app they share Holocaust education from Tova’s first hand testimony as one of only five children to have survived the war in her hometown. Tova and her grandson meet egregious hate with a steadfast resolve to share the truth. I am so grateful to have met and had the pleasure of singing Yiddish folk tunes with them. Daniella Rabbani Instagram - 🪽🫧I’m not a very religious person. I know! I know! Im the most Jewish person you know. And yes. I’ve been observant even modern orthodox for decades before. But my deep and meaningful connection to Judaism is rooted in ancestry and history. Legacy, language and culture. In a feeling of being a citizen of the world, sometimes on the inside and often on the outside. It’s a connection to the land of Israel and the Jewish people. To the other. My strong pull to leave the world a better place than how I found it. But religious… not me. Spiritual oh my! Into it. So when Yom Kippur rolls around I’m torn. It is a gorgeous tradition- a pattern interrupt that asks us to divorce ourselves from the mundane, the material- even food and water- for 25 hours. A reset. And we’ve done it TOGETHER even scattered across the globe for thousands of years. Praying with identical texts, atoning, crying and meditating on what we want for ourselves our loved ones and the world in the coming year. Magnificent. Transcendent. Godly, really. I haven’t fasted in a long time. First it was recovery from chronic dieting and those dumb juice cleanses. Then it was pregnancy and breastfeeding. After that: I just haven’t wanted to. But there’s one thing that I’d love to pause on- to meditate on how I’d like to engage with- and it’s this device that I’m typing on now. It is so powerful and has afforded me many beautiful words and even new friendships. Work opportunities. But when I left it in an Uber the other day- I can’t even begin to tell you the peace I felt. Hours without a screen. Just me, my children, my husband. Just some books I’ve been meaning to finish and housework that finally felt doable. So I’ll fast this. Abstain from click click clicking away in the hopes of filling myself with connection or productivity or fun. Empty calories as they say. Let’s see where it takes me. And in the meantime if you celebrate and are fasting this Yom Kippur- may I wish you a most meaningful fast. On this Holocaust Rememberence Day I’ll confess that I dread the day that my open-hearted deep-thinking Jewish children find out about the ways in which their great grandparents were tortured. For years. For being born Jewish. The aftermath the likes of which we are still dealing with on our persons and as a collective (non Jews too- this was a global trauma). It was a year ago today when Dan and I toured our public school in Brooklyn. The parent coordinator let us know that in fifth grade my sweet ones will grapple with the absolute worst in humanity- the Holocaust. I instantly cried with relief and gratitude and just plane sorrow. They’ll come home to know the pride and the pain of being the great grandchildren of two survivors. My grandparents who showered me with ENDLESS love. That’s our legacy too. My film OMA about this epigenetic inheritance is available on @primevideo. As much as I dread the day, Holocaust education is so important. May we never ever know such horror. May we embody the best of humanity. May the world learn from past mistakes and do better. If you have a string and that string is severed and now you have two strings cut in half. Now you have two ends. To repair the string, you tie the ends together. Notice - the ends are much closer than they were before. Relationships are the same way. We’re going to f*ck up! Strings are going to be severed. Relationships rupture. But when they rupture, there is room for repair. What that brings is an opportunity to teach the other person - adult or child - that you’re sorry and there’s room to do better and grow closer.  😬 🤦‍♀️

Daniella Rabbani Instagram - ✌🏼💕Every time I leave my family for an advocacy trip, I write that this fight is inspired by them. Which has become true and false. Yes- I want to leave the world a more harmonious place, a safe and loving place, for them. But I won’t “fight” for it. I won’t “combat hate”. What I’m learning is that fighting got us all only so far. So what I’ll do is engage. I’ll educate. I’ll listen and I’ll learn too. I will regulate and moderate. I won’t “arm myself” with information but I’ll become literate. My family lineage is one of war (and certainly not by choice). My great-grandparents, my grandparents, my parents: all survivors of one war or another. I am the only one of my American born Jewish siblings who hasn’t been caught in the literal crossfire in Israel. I would have every right to take up the sword and defend myself. But that is not my weapon of choice. In fact, I choose to go unarmored. I have the privilege and the dumb luck to do so. I’ll take it. I’ll take it and I’ll ride with it. But my deep and meaningful connection to Judaism is rooted in ancestry and history. Legacy, language and culture. In a feeling of being a citizen of the world, sometimes on the inside and often on the outside. It’s a connection to the land of Israel and the Jewish people. To the other. My strong pull to leave the world a better place than how I found it. But religious… not me. Spiritual oh my! Into it. So when Yom Kippur rolls around I’m torn. It is a gorgeous tradition- a pattern interrupt that asks us to divorce ourselves from the mundane, the material- even food and water- for 25 hours. A reset. And we’ve done it TOGETHER even scattered across the globe for thousands of years. Praying with identical texts, atoning, crying and meditating on what we want for ourselves our loved ones and the world in the coming year. Magnificent. Transcendent. Godly, really. I haven’t fasted in a long time. First it was recovery from chronic dieting and those dumb juice cleanses. Then it was pregnancy and breastfeeding. After that: I just haven’t wanted to. But there’s one thing that I’d love to pause on- to meditate on how I’d like to engage with- and it’s this device that I’m typing on now. It is so powerful and has afforded me many beautiful words and even new friendships. Work opportunities. But when I left it in an Uber the other day- I can’t even begin to tell you the peace I felt. Hours without a screen. Just me, my children, my husband. Just some books I’ve been meaning to finish and housework that finally felt doable. So I’ll fast this. Abstain from click click clicking away in the hopes of filling myself with connection or productivity or fun. Empty calories as they say. Let’s see where it takes me. And in the meantime if you celebrate and are fasting this Yom Kippur- may I wish you a most meaningful fast. On this Holocaust Rememberence Day I’ll confess that I dread the day that my open-hearted deep-thinking Jewish children find out about the ways in which their great grandparents were tortured. For years. For being born Jewish. The aftermath the likes of which we are still dealing with on our persons and as a collective (non Jews too- this was a global trauma). It was a year ago today when Dan and I toured our public school in Brooklyn. The parent coordinator let us know that in fifth grade my sweet ones will grapple with the absolute worst in humanity- the Holocaust. I instantly cried with relief and gratitude and just plane sorrow. They’ll come home to know the pride and the pain of being the great grandchildren of two survivors. My grandparents who showered me with ENDLESS love. That’s our legacy too. My film OMA about this epigenetic inheritance is available on @primevideo. As much as I dread the day, Holocaust education is so important. May we never ever know such horror. May we embody the best of humanity. May the world learn from past mistakes and do better. What I’m learning is that fighting got us all only so far. So what I’ll do is engage. I’ll educate. I’ll listen and I’ll learn too. I will regulate and moderate. I won’t “arm myself” with information but I’ll become literate. My family lineage is one of war (and certainly not by choice). My great-grandparents, my grandparents, my parents: all survivors of one war or another. I am the only one of my American born Jewish siblings who hasn’t been caught in the literal crossfire in Israel. I would have every right to take up the sword and defend myself. But that is not my weapon of choice. In fact, I choose to go unarmored. I have the privilege and the dumb luck to do so. I’ll take it. I’ll take it and I’ll ride with it.
