We always wander happily and I never know if we got to anything of value to anyone else but itā€™s so damn fun that I donā€™t really care. Itā€™s about the most fully committed, emotionally deep, physically harrowing performance Iā€™ve seen in a while. Just raw & utterly devoid of performative BS. Itā€™s a tough but really elegant and compassionate film (by Michael Morris) where the emotion is really earned. I happened to catch it and, wow, I was really staggered by the depth she reached. Edward Norton Instagram - A few thoughts in celebration of veterans and the American spirit of service: this is my dad in 1967, a Marine Corps Captain at Con Thien firebase on the DMZ of Vietnam. Son of a Pittsburg steel family, he went to college in 1960 and when President Kennedy said ā€˜Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your countryā€ he took it seriously. Joined the Marines while also winning a Woodrow Wilson scholarship and working on his Masters in Russian Studies. Despite being newly married to my mom, he never hesitated to serve or evaded danger and went to Vietnam in spring of ā€˜67. Stationed at bases along the DMZ, including at Con Thien across the summer and fall of ā€˜67, some of the most intense fighting of the war, and through the Tet Offensive. Lost comrades and friends. Came to believe the war was a terrible mistake both tactically and morally but served with honor while communicating his concerns to his Senators back home. Came home, went to Harvard Law School, became father of three and served as a US Attorney for MD and then became one of most effective strategists, litigators, organization builders and all-around ā€˜warriorsā€™ for environmental protection of his generation. He has never chased money and instead has defined his life by service to this great country. THAT is what a true patriot looks like. So to every snowflake, chicken hawk, hypocritical political bigot who gets off spewing bile at liberals, Democrats or tree-huggers: my dad is all of those, so shame on you. And special note to our national embarrassment ā€˜Commander in Chiefā€™: your 5 BS deferments, your disparagement of POW heroes and Gold Star families, your attacks on career Intelligence officers & the rule of law all savagely dishonor the sacrifices & service of veterans daily. But when you skip basic ceremonial respect on their day of honor (because of what rain might do to your hair?) you reveal yourself as a true coward and antagonist to American principles that youā€™ve obviously never read or absorbed. Thank god there are veteran Patriots like my father, Ed Norton to defend America against the likes of you. Happy Veterans Day, Dad. Weā€™re all so proud of you. Semper Fi

Like making home movies with your friends in middle school, except it ends up Opening Night at Cannes. We didn't want it to end so after the premiere we went to Italy for a hang and we've kept it up. 'Grand Budapest' got handed out for a read the first summer and 'Isle of Dogs' was outlined the next. Bill wasn't with us this summer but we wore his #WilliamMurrayGolf shirts to infuse the idyll with his spirit of fun. And #BMW loaned us incredible rides to get the growing families over the dusty bumpy Tuscan roads to gelato at the town on the hill. If I had to get stranded with a group on an island, I could make it work with these cats.

Edward Norton Instagram - Celebrating the great Milos Forman Milos was one of my true artistic heroes. Not just because he was a great film director but because of his capacity to sustain an exuberant belief that individual human spirit can triumph over institutions of oppression and his conviction that art can and must play a role in that fight for the health of a society. He was an infectious optimist and lover of life, despite losing both of his parents to the Nazis as a boy and then finding his way as a young man and artist under the Kafka-esque oppressions of a totalitarian state. And, if you were lucky enough to get to know him and hear about these experiences and how they forged him, you realized that for all the success and privilege that came to him, his own perspective was that he was lucky to simply be alive and free and that he had an obligation to keep using his work to shake his fist in defiance. He was my first real mentor in filmmaking and, to this day, Iā€™ve never worked with anyone who matched his wizardry at cultivating the ā€˜unrepeatable momentsā€™ that made his films so magical. The innumerable wonderful memories I have from working with him on ā€˜The People vs Larry Flyntā€™, having him act in my first film and traveling with him to his beloved Prague remain one of the greatest gifts of my career.

Edward Norton Instagram - @freesolofilm is hands down the best doc Iā€™ve seen in a long time and one of the best films of the year period. If youā€™ve scrambled on rocks even a little bit, the achievement is so impossible to wrap your head around that you just shake with emotion, and even if youā€™ve never climbed more than a staircase itā€™s still a profoundly inspiring meditation on life. Huge applause to @jimmy_chin and team for an astonishing piece of filmmaking and of course @alexhonnold for giving everyone a beautiful proof that with focus and dedication anything is possible. Really just a great film that Iā€™ll probably watch once a year for inspiration.

And then Wynton Marsalis did a crushing jazz arrangement of it that also appears in the film. This special .45 with both versions drops shortly and @rollingstone premieres it on Aug 21st. Enjoy. Son of a Pittsburg steel family, he went to college in 1960 and when President Kennedy said ā€˜Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your countryā€ he took it seriously. Joined the Marines while also winning a Woodrow Wilson scholarship and working on his Masters in Russian Studies. Despite being newly married to my mom, he never hesitated to serve or evaded danger and went to Vietnam in spring of ā€˜67. Stationed at bases along the DMZ, including at Con Thien across the summer and fall of ā€˜67, some of the most intense fighting of the war, and through the Tet Offensive. Lost comrades and friends. Came to believe the war was a terrible mistake both tactically and morally but served with honor while communicating his concerns to his Senators back home. Came home, went to Harvard Law School, became father of three and served as a US Attorney for MD and then became one of most effective strategists, litigators, organization builders and all-around ā€˜warriorsā€™ for environmental protection of his generation. He has never chased money and instead has defined his life by service to this great country. THAT is what a true patriot looks like. So to every snowflake, chicken hawk, hypocritical political bigot who gets off spewing bile at liberals, Democrats or tree-huggers: my dad is all of those, so shame on you. And special note to our national embarrassment ā€˜Commander in Chiefā€™: your 5 BS deferments, your disparagement of POW heroes and Gold Star families, your attacks on career Intelligence officers & the rule of law all savagely dishonor the sacrifices & service of veterans daily. But when you skip basic ceremonial respect on their day of honor (because of what rain might do to your hair?) you reveal yourself as a true coward and antagonist to American principles that youā€™ve obviously never read or absorbed. Not just because he was a great film director but because of his capacity to sustain an exuberant belief that individual human spirit can triumph over institutions of oppression and his conviction that art can and must play a role in that fight for the health of a society. He was an infectious optimist and lover of life, despite losing both of his parents to the Nazis as a boy and then finding his way as a young man and artist under the Kafka-esque oppressions of a totalitarian state. And, if you were lucky enough to get to know him and hear about these experiences and how they forged him, you realized that for all the success and privilege that came to him, his own perspective was that he was lucky to simply be alive and free and that he had an obligation to keep using his work to shake his fist in defiance. He was my first real mentor in filmmaking and, to this day, Iā€™ve never worked with anyone who matched his wizardry at cultivating the ā€˜unrepeatable momentsā€™ that made his films so magical. The innumerable wonderful memories I have from working with him on ā€˜The People vs Larry Flyntā€™, having him act in my first film and traveling with him to his beloved Prague remain one of the greatest gifts of my career.

If youā€™ve scrambled on rocks even a little bit, the achievement is so impossible to wrap your head around that you just shake with emotion, and even if youā€™ve never climbed more than a staircase itā€™s still a profoundly inspiring meditation on life. Huge applause to @jimmy_chin and team for an astonishing piece of filmmaking and of course @alexhonnold for giving everyone a beautiful proof that with focus and dedication anything is possible. Really just a great film that Iā€™ll probably watch once a year for inspiration.

And then Wynton Marsalis did a crushing jazz arrangement of it that also appears in the film. This special .45 with both versions drops shortly and @rollingstone premieres it on Aug 21st. Enjoy. (And if you look close youā€™ll see that another old friend and musical hero of mine laid the sweet bass AND horn into Thomā€™s song....love ya @flea333)
