Caption : For my first floor speech of 2024, I spoke about immigration – an issue that is so critical and so fundamental to the U.S. It’s currently being debated and negotiated over as part of a larger appropriations deal, so I felt it was important to lay down how I approach the issue. Practical, serious people on both sides of the aisle should be able to come together to discuss options and compromise on this most American of issues.Likes : 460

Caption : While we face a potential government shutdown tonight – which means the closure and disruption of federal facilities and programs and the furlough of federal workers – my goal is to limit the impact it will have on my office’s ability to respond to #MI07’s needs. Both of my D.C. and Lansing offices *will remain open*, which means you’ll still be able to reach my constituent services teams for assistance, regardless of the shutdown’s duration. Unfortunately, though, many of the agencies with which we interact will be closed or impacted. We’ve been gathering information from federal agencies, and have compiled it all at the link below. We will continue to update this page as more information becomes available. If you have any questions, please give us a call at (517) 993-0510 or (202) 225-4872. 🔗: Slotkin.house.gov/shutdownLikes : 419

We first met back in 2018 while knocking doors together, and now she’s the Michigan State Senate’s first African-American Appropriations Chair. Sen. Anthony is a star on the rise and a leader on economic opportunity for all, reproductive rights, and gun safety. Caption : It struck me today as I was trying to close out work ahead of the holidays that I had stumbled upon a perfect snapshot of what it’s like to be a Congresswoman: sending hand-signed letters to constituents. In just this batch I congratulated scholarship recipients, honored a WWII vet turning 100, celebrated new businesses, and, on the other side of the coin, recognized the bravery of the loved ones of the students lost in the Oxford shooting who spoke at the recent sentencing. As the year comes to a close, it’s a good reminder to take a moment to celebrate all the wonderful things happening in our lives, and acknowledge the painful things happening to people we care about. While Washington is a mess, the work here in Michigan, and the people I get to meet and fight for, are what make me so proud to represent this district.Likes : 361

Caption : Yesterday’s news of violence over food delivery in Gaza highlights again how dire the humanitarian situation is there, and how important it is that we get the ceasefire deal that negotiators from all sides are working on. I and so many in Congress have been urging the White House privately and publicly to use all available means to get a deal done before Ramadan. That deal should include a halt to the fighting by both sides, the return of all hostages to families who have been desperate and without even proof of life for months, and a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza. There will be much more to negotiate on long-term issues, but it starts with a concrete deal in the near term.Likes : 346

There is a credible ceasefire deal on the table and Hamas needs to take it. The Israelis have publicly supported it. The families of the hostages and the families in Gaza are desperate for it. Once again, refusal by Hamas is only selfishly prolonging the war and abusing the very civilians they claim to be fighting for. Now is the time.Likes : 244

Caption : Tonight’s speech from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the National Archives is a tale of two visits: During his first trip to Washington last December, he was welcomed to the Capitol with open arms — and captured here — to address a joint session of Congress on Ukraine’s fight for its freedom. Now, nine months later, Speaker Kevin McCarthy rejected President Zelenskyy’s request to address a joint session, and is reportedly considering stripping Ukraine funding out of this year’s budget, to appease his far-right flank. It’s just another example of the dysfunction we’ve seen from this majority, and even in the same week that we’re barreling towards a government shutdown at the end of September. 📷: Evelyn Hockstein/ReutersLikes : 218

As someone who has worked alongside the military for my entire career, nominating the young men and women of our district who have chosen to take a big step forward in service to this nation is one of my biggest honors as a Member of Congress. Reflecting the years of effort these students have put into preparing for this opportunity, my office takes service nominations very seriously, and it’s a true privilege to send them off. These students represent a new generation of leaders, one that will chart a new course for our country that upholds the values of equality, dignity, and respect for all. I know they will lead with character and purpose, and I offer them my highest congratulations. Thank you to everyone who testified in these cases, and to the families of Madisyn, Tate, Justin, and Hana for their continued courage. As they said tonight, there is much more work to do to protect our kids from gun violence, but their resolve has ensured that justice was served. It’s also important to thank Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald and her office, who have worked tirelessly on these cases for over two years. They felt the Oxford story in their guts like all of us, and they took action, even when others may not have pursued something so groundbreaking. Michigan law now reinforces the precedent these cases and the courts have set here: If you have an unsecured weapon in a home with children, and one of them uses it to commit a crime, you can be charged and held accountable.Likes : 174

Sam did for Team Slotkin what came so naturally to her: helping others and serving constituents. She helped set up and implement our internship program, and was a thoughtful and inspiring mentor to the young people who joined our team. Sam also oversaw a ton of different programs, but her passion was really in interfaith work. At a time when interfaith engagement is needed more than ever, we believed it was the right moment to rename our annual meeting on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and honor her memory for years to come. May her memory continue to be a blessing, and a moral compass as we continue to work to build bridges across faiths, backgrounds and communities.Likes : 171

Caption : Today marks 80 years since U.S. and allied troops landed at Normandy on D-Day. Among them was my late grandfather, Ted Spitz, who was recognized for “gallantry in action” in the vicinity of Caumont, Normandy in the days following the initial landings. His story helps me get my arms around the enormity of the sacrifice that was made on this day eight decades ago. My grandfather landed on Omaha Beach after what felt like an eternity at sea waiting in silence. I was young when he died, so the only story I remember him telling me was about how terribly seasick he was, and therefore how desperate he was to get to dry land, despite what was waiting for him at the beach. Later, after the invasion, his unit set up camp, and he ended up discovering enemy outposts near his company. PFC Spitz “proceeded over treacherous and fire-swept terrain and routed the hostile patrols”, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star for his efforts. The story was published in the Detroit News. As a teenager, I traveled to the village in Normandy where his medals were pinned on him. Today, I keep his medals, the story, the citation, and his photo in my office. It’s a powerful reminder of the many stories of bravery by American service members on D-Day and in the days and weeks that followed. D-Day was the first step in a long march through Europe that freed millions from fascist occupation. It was made possible by the incredible courage of the heroes who landed on that beach – courage that lives on in the generations of American service members that have followed them. Today is also about recognizing the individual stories of the hundreds of thousands who risked everything for something bigger than themselves.Likes : 166

Israel – like any country – has the right to self-defense, and while we want strategic thinking from all parties, Iran chose to take this conflict to a new place. Their leadership shared that the need for their services has tripled over the last year, and that recent drug shortages — specifically medications that address mental health needs — puts a real strain on their ability to serve the community. Hearing from the local folks on the ground is vital to the work I do in Congress, and it’s always great to spend some time with dedicated advocates who work so hard to serve people.Likes : 153

Caption : As we mark the first anniversary of the shooting at Michigan State University, it was good to spend some time on campus today, checking in with students, faculty and staff, and talking about what the past year has been like for all of us. That includes my own fantastic district office interns, all of whom are MSU students, who joined me throughout the day. There really isn’t a playbook for how to mark this kind of anniversary, so it was heartening to see so many people turn their emotions into action through the day of service activities offered at the Hannah Community Center and International Center. There were service projects to work on, art options, and even a squishmallow exchange to provide some extra comfort. These activities really showcased what it means to be Spartan Strong. One place that’s burned into my brain from that evening is sitting in the ops center at the East Lansing Police Department as the hours-long manhunt took place. It seemed fitting to go back and visit with them and city fire and other first responder leaders on duty that night, and thank them for their actions that evening, and in the grueling year since. We shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that there was only one group of leaders who were running toward the gunfire, not away from it. And that they, too, have had to process this tragedy. I’m now back in Washington, even if my heart is still with East Lansing. It’s hard to explain how much a tragedy like this impacts all of us. The common theme I heard from students and staff today was the way a mass shooting forever changes the very DNA of a community. We are still climbing our way back. #SpartanStrong.Likes : 142

It’s no surprise that hardworking women in Michigan were among the first to roll up their sleeves and serve their country. Today’s Congressional Gold Medal ceremony honoring Rosie the Riveters was long overdue, and I encourage everyone to take time to listen to Mae Krier, an “OG” Rosie who helped produce B-17s and B-29s for the war effort from 1943 to 1945.Likes : 132

It was particularly moving to see the ribbon cut by Holocaust survivors, all women in their 80s, 90s and a few over 100. There will come a time when these survivors won’t be here to share their stories, so it was moving to see so many together to hear from them today.Likes : 127

Caption : Yesterday, I sat down with a delegation of Ukrainian parliamentarians – including my friend Sasha Ustinova – for a frank discussion on the way forward on Ukraine as conflict roils in the Middle East. The potential for a wider regional conflict that targets U.S. forces and resources is very real, so it’s important we start talking about the implications for Ukraine, particularly as we enter the third week with no Speaker of the House, and no way to bring bills to the floor. In addition, we discussed the impressive growth of defense manufacturing in Ukraine since the start of the war — and ways the US can help further that indigenous development. In need of faster production, Ukrainian engineers have been hard at work to secure a steady supply of the capabilities they need to continue fighting Russia.Likes : 115

I recently had the chance to visit SafeCenter, which supports survivors in Clinton & Shiawassee counties. Thank you to the team for showing me around & for your work to protect & advocate for victims of interpersonal violence – especially amid an uptick in reports since COVID. And with resources limited in rural areas, they’re also feeling the effects of a rise in homelessness. Working together at every level of government is the only way to turn the tide, and it was inspiring to see how much of an impact a small group of passionate, mission-oriented people can have on a wide area of need.Likes : 111
