Frederique van der Wal Instagram - “Ah, the art of fashion! It’s a beautiful dance between personal expression and the expert touch of stylists and designers. In some shots, I wear my own outfits, reflecting my taste and personality. But in others, I become a canvas for the visionary creations of talented stylists and designers, ( and also of course the photographers, make up and hair )who weave their magic and transform me.

Good clothes possess an eternal charm. They defy the passage of time, transcending trends and fads. They become timeless pieces that exude elegance and sophistication.

In this fast-paced world, it’s essential to buy smarter and buy less. Let’s embrace a more mindful approach to fashion, cherishing quality over quantity. By carefully selecting , we not only enhance our personal style but also contribute to a sustainable future.

As my dear friend Beatrix always says, ‘In your body is a good place to be.’
Let us celebrate our bodies, our unique vessels of self-expression. Through fashion, we can embrace our individuality, radiate confidence.
Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Celebrating my post-birthday weekend (at 56, how crazy is that!) in the Hamptons.
It's a place I have always fondly visited for many years. I love reflecting on the days when we used to shoot here all the time.
So many great memories.
It was also so much quieter then ;))

This cover was from 28 years ago, a crazy idea half a lifetime ago!
But I can honestly say that I feel better now than I did then.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind some perks of being much younger, but I'm fully okay with where I am today.
There are some little changes in my body that are at times hard to accept, but when you do accept them, they just fall away
and then …
another one shows up, and you have to accept that too. Like saggy skin on my elbows. I was in a yoga class yesterday and suddenly noticed this funny-looking skin, it was shocking to see it on myself, my skin hanging differently. Oh well, that's life.

Lauren Hutton once said to me that when we first met, I had told her she reminded me of my mom. She didn't take it so well then, but for me, it was the biggest compliment I could give her. She said that was a time when she was struggling with getting older, but with a beautiful smirk, she said she's so past that stage and would totally be able to see it as a compliment and embrace that moment. Of course, easier said than done.

Each phase of life is filled with new challenges, yet finding acceptance is the key.
My 2 cents of the day ;)

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Sometimes, when we come across a picture, we can’t help but wonder how we used to see the world back then.

For me,
It was a time of innocence,
free from worries,
filled with discovery and wonder.
It was a time of living in the moment, without any concrete plans, and experiencing many firsts.

Looking back, it’s clear that it was a beautiful way to grow up. That young girl, that version of myself, has always remained very alive within me.
Even during turbulent times, times of loss ( in this pic , my mom, my dad, my step dad were still with us and only 2 years after life changed drastically with all three of them passing)
and even when I found myself on covers and being adored which could have understandably affected or derailed anyone,
that sense of joy and the constant search for new discoveries and deep curiosity only grew stronger.

Now, as I’m about to embark on a new journey yet again
Both personally and on a business level, I feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. A chance to explore new horizons and embrace new challenges.

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Life seems to always get interrupted , a wonderful quote from Beatrix Ost which she taught me many years ago.
To know it’s part of our learning process of growing and to let go more and more and to try to flow with it.

Sometimes easier said than done.
I’m learning.
Which is the fun part to be able to become lighter.

Our world is increasingly unsettling.

The storms of the last few weeks and the air quality due to the fires , all of it suddenly what we heard about is at our doorstep.
How can it be that in this country people still debate climate change.

This time we were the lucky ones, for now and that we didn’t get flooded , we took some water in but nothing like some parts north of us and in so many parts of the world.
The heat in some parts of the US , crazy!

Yet with all the unrest and craziness I find joy in all the small things.
Being upstate sharing with friends and family , eating, drinking, swimming with the Koi and gardening…

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Today is a significant day, marking the anniversary of my mother's passing, many many years ago.

She is with me, and I continue to celebrate her life always. While there have been moments when I longed to be embraced by her and feel her unconditional love, I have also found solace in viewing life through a different perspective. Instead of succumbing to anger and sorrow, I made a conscious decision to embrace life with full force.

I carry my parents presence close to my heart, allowing their love and guidance to be a constant source of comfort.
I am grateful for the years I had them by my side during the most pivotal moments of my formative years; they have shaped me into the person I am today.
Even their passing made me stronger and more positive in my outlook to life.

As I reflect on this journey, I am reminded of a quote by Rumi: "The wound is the place where the Light enters you." Realizing the profound beauty in these poetic words, I have come to understand that our wounds can lead us towards a life we genuinely desire to live.

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Hello indeed,
A last shoot of the year and a perfect prelude to get in the mood for the holidays.

Thank you for a fun shoot.

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Amidst the rain and gusting winds, a sudden trickle of sunlight emerges, transforming into a magical sunset.

It’s the kind of light that makes you pause in your tracks, abandoning any hurry to capture another beautiful moment in Amsterdam.

And as the night sky descends, the lights in the houses illuminate, enveloping you in a feeling of living inside a snow globe.
Merry Christmas!

While I like the images of us, it’s the bond we’ve nurtured over the years that truly warms my heart.

Our connection runs deep, filled with love, understanding, honesty, fun, and kindness. I feel incredibly grateful.

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - All of these pictures are of me, but with very different looks applied.

The transformations are achieved through various layers, such as makeup, hairstyling, great clothes, retouching, or filters and ofcourse the photographers.

I’ve always admired the talent of hair and makeup artists, as well as stylists, designers and photographers. It’s truly remarkable what the right team can accomplish.

This reminds me of a program I hosted and produced 15 years ago called Covershot for the A&E network. We would select everyday women who had gone through difficult times and give them a complete transformation with the help of a fantastic team of makeup artists, hairstylists, stylists, and a photographer. The big reveal would be a billboard in Times Square, New York.

It was incredible to witness the transformation and the positive impact it had on these women. It gave them a tremendous boost of confidence.

However, I believe that experiencing such a transformation firsthand is even more empowering. That being said, it’s important to remember that when we scroll through social media, online platforms, or even magazines (showing my age here), the pictures we see may be taken by professionals, manipulated by apps, or even generated by AI. They may not accurately represent the people.

In a world filled with carefully curated images and unrealistic standards, it’s easy to get caught up in the comparison game. But I think that beauty is not solely defined by flawless skin, impeccable makeup, or the perfect outfit.
It’s about embracing our unique features, quirks, and imperfections that make us who we are.

Happy weekend ;))

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Ikigai is a Japanese concept that combines the terms iki, meaning alive or life, and gai, meaning benefit and worth. When combined, these terms mean that which gives your life worth, meaning, or purpose.

Birthdays, for me, are a special time to reflect on my life. I think about the year I’ve spent, the years to come, and what I have created.

I feel incredibly fortunate to be alive, and I am happy and grateful to be here. I am proud of the life I have built.

I am surrounded by love, with great friends and family close by. I feel their presence deeply, and I am carried by those who are no longer here.

My relationship with my daughter is truly amazing, and it continues to deepen and grow stronger with each passing year.

Every day, I wake up with a sense of curiosity about what life has in store for me. I am excited to learn and discover more about myself. Growing is a blessing, and I find great pleasure in understanding and nurturing my body, mind, and soul. Taking care of myself through healthy eating, a positive outlook on life, engaging in different yoga, pilates, tennis and always deeply connecting with nature. I look forward to some of the new projects that are coming and especially the ones where I’m giving back.
It’s all part of a wondrous journey that I have come to truly enjoy.

So, here’s to me on my birthday.🍾🎉💃
Cheers!

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - My dad used to call me a water rat, affectionately ofcourse ;))

From a very young age, I developed a passion for swimming and it became a lifelong pursuit of discovering and exploring new waters and oceans.
In the United States, I became a certified diver and had the opportunity to do the first underwater reporting for E! And Access Hollywood, years ago.

Throughout the years, I have been fortunate to contribute to several programs organized by Celebration of the Sea.
One particular program that remains etched in my memory involved terminally ill children swimming with dolphins. Witnessing the profound impact it had on these kids was truly remarkable.

This past week I had the privilege of being present once again to witness the incredible work that Celebration of the Sea continues to do. From their Ocean Heroes education programs to their cleanup initiatives, they consistently inspire and engage communities to bring about positive change. It is truly inspiring to see their dedication and the difference they are making.

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - I just learned of the passing of a great photographer Hans Feurer.

It made me reflect on the passage of time.

I find myself trying to recall those days of shooting with him on distant beaches in the late eighties and early nineties.
The memories of traveling to those incredible beaches and locations flood my mind. I believe this particular shoot was in Cabo San Lucas or perhaps a Caribbean island. Back then, the shoots were extravagant, and we would spend a week in a stunning resort, capturing an eight-page editorial. Those days are long gone, the industry changed drastically.

And that innocent-looking girl too. ;)

Sometimes, I find myself in awe of all the travel and how fortunate I was. Lucky to have had those incredible experiences and even luckier to have remained grounded and strong, preserving my sanity. My career has taken me in countless directions, expanding and evolving along the way.

While I wouldn’t want to go back to those days, I like where I am now. My mind and soul are in a good place, although my body could use a reboot here and there ;))

RIP to you, Hans thank you for the memories.🙏

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Three decades of fashion experience under my belt, and I never tire of witnessing the incredible transformation that makeup, hair, and fabulous clothes can bring to a girl’s appearance ;))

I frequently use the quote to remind myself that feeling good about ourselves works both ways - from the inside out and the outside in. Striking the right balance is crucial.

During this particular shoot, the external enhancements truly nourished the internal self, igniting a magical spark.

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Finding myself back in Florida for a few weeks.

Love, life and work.

My curiosity about understanding how my body is changing and how we eat, exercise, the supplements we take, the products we put on our face and body, to the clothes we wear is bringing me here for some exciting meetings.

It all matters.

My goal is to get a deeper understanding of my body, mind and soul how they are connected.
Its so unbelievably interesting to learn what we can do to better our lives in not only outlook to life, to inside our bodies and how we can help to make sure we live better for the next part of life.
Staying strong for the next 35 years ;) with a smile on my face.

Youthful, to me is a state of mind.

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Life seems very fragmented.

On certain days, life can feel like a whirlwind of chaos and uncertainty. The world is filled with unrest , wacky politics, wars, friends passing away , illness, conflicts, and the never-ending stream of opinions.
It's a constant turmoil. I feel it! We all do.

But amidst it all, I strive to stay grounded, even though it's not always a walk in the park.
That said.

For me, it's the little things that bring joy and solace and keep me grounded.

Sharing a delightful dinner with wonderful friends, embarking on a serene walk through nature's embrace, or feeling the wind on my face during a bike ride, a vinyasa yoga class - these are the moments that remind me of the beauty in life and bring me moments of bliss.

And let's not forget the power of spreading positivity through uplifting messages, for it has the potential to create ripples of change.

And …there's something undeniably magical about finding comfort and intimacy.
The feeling of surrendering ( not so easy) oneself into the arms of a big, kind man can be an exquisite experience, offering a sense of security and connection that words cannot fully capture…

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - A week in New York is often said to be equivalent to months of experiences in other places. Life in the fast lane, as they say.

This week definitely was one to remember , it kicked off with getting lost on a path (🙃) in Shelter, and after walking 11 miles, our asses and legs were completely shot. But it was worth it, so stunning to see all the fall leaves and laughing all the way.

From birthdays to dinners to performances, inspiring talks and underground dancing,
I absolutely love when New York grabs you with its enormous energy.

❤️ New York ❤️

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - I love cruising on my beautiful lekker bike through the city,
even at night, which is still a bit unusual for New Yorkers.
It’s especially fun when I’m all dressed up and when I give my stylish friend a ride on the back – we attracted quite some attention with people whistling and laughing along with us.

Last night before getting back on my bike, we stumbled upon a street rollerblade fiesta straight out of the eighties.

I couldn’t resist doing a little dance 💃.

I ❤️ New York!

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Glorious Easter weekend.

One of my favorite things is receiving the Times at the driveway and sitting with my coffee on the bench, listening to spring come alive around us.

Getting some fresh eggs, one of them lays green eggs ;))
playing a game of tennis, going for hikes,
and dinner with friends - life is pretty good.

Wish we could share a drink today and celebrate you.

I often sense your presence but I long to hear your voice and to be able to take a walk in nature with you (which you always loved doing with us)
and talk about life.

Now, when we take walks , I find myself holding my hands behind my back, just like you did.

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - From the wonderful crazy life in the New York City jungle I was ready to change it up and dive into the ocean.

I had been invited to witness firsthand the impact of rising ocean water temperatures on coral reefs. Joining the amazing organization I.CARE with Mike and Patxi, I was able to see their work on coral restoration and gain a deeper understanding of the effects of climate change on our underwater ecosystems. It becomes even more clear to me that everything is connected.

Every day, we witness the effects of climate change on our surroundings - floods, fires, and the loss of species and nature. But to see what is happening beneath the surface, we sometimes seem to forget and it’s heart-wrenching.
However, with the efforts of organizations like I.CARE and Dr. Cindy Lewis director of Florida Institute of Oceanography’s Keys Marine Lab, there is hope.

Our first dive was disheartening, as much of the coral that had been planted had bleached. However, we were pleasantly surprised during our second dive. The energy was immediately better, and we witnessed life, action, vibrant colors, and an abundance of fish. The sponges that had been planted there were alive and had grown. Nature is resilient and finds ways to adapt and resist. On the other hand, we humans need to make changes in our behavior.

It feels good to be on the front lines and witness firsthand the efforts of so many people.

I am trying to make a difference,
by using my water bottle instead of buying plastic bottles.
To use no plastic around the house If everyone stops or drastically reduces their consumption of plastic bottles, the impact would be enormous.
I am also taking the time to understand the ingredients in the products I use. I have learned about the harmful effects of microbeads, which are tiny plastic particles found in cleaning products, cosmetics, and skincare. By being more conscious of what I buy, I can make choices that are better for the environment and for myself.

I have adopted a mindset of mindful consumption. Instead of buying unnecessary things, I am focusing on reducing my overall consumption. By doing so, I hope to contribute to a more sustainable future.

Nicholas, you’re not just a candle on our cake, you’re the spark that sets the whole thing on fire.

So lucky to have you in our lives and light us up!

You are one of the funniest, wittiest and smartest people I know.
I feel so grateful having you in my life.

Talking candles on the cake I won’t say how many there are now..who cares anyway.. though today another one is added on and we celebrate you.

Happy birthday GUP!

Love you very much ❤️

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - A glorious day upstate, so lucky.

Being able to spend most of the day with my bare hands in the earth, and planting tomatoes, basil, broccoli, cucumber, peppers, Brussels sprouts, and and and …

And so exciting, I smuggled from Egypt all kinds of seeds from a local farmer at the Nile so there will be an Egyptian patch too.

It’s the best feeling to do gardening and planting, also has so many health benefits. Not only is it great for the mind and very grounding, but it also has fantastic benefits for the gut, both while doing it and when we get to enjoy eating it all.
Promotes overall health and well being and connects you to nature which will destress you completely.

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - An Egyptian Adventure,

How lucky am I!
Having one of my dearest friends Filine ❤️show me around Egypt with her local friends.

My last visit to this remarkable land was 15 years ago, but this time, I am experiencing it anew through the eyes of Filine, as we celebrate a significant milestone in her life. We are able to explore off the beaten path, away from the typical tourist spots.

Well some ofcourse but we are taking the back entrance ;)) or at times the real entrance.

The warmth and hospitality of the locals is felt everywhere.

Driving through the vast desert landscape which is both intimidating and awe-inspiring.
However, reaching the banks of the Nile fills us with wonder as we are greeted by a lush, green oasis.

I am eagerly anticipating our upcoming adventures of going to some of the remarkable spots in Luxor

Frederique van der Wal Instagram - Reflecting on some of these magazine covers always brings a smile to my face. In particular, the older ones stand out in my memory. It was so much fun to be all dressed up with full makeup and hair, being photographed. Especially the ones by the esteemed Scavullo and the highly sought-after Cosmo cover.

I distinctly recall gazing at my own image and barely recognizing myself. The transformation that hair, makeup, and the fab clothing can achieve is truly remarkable.
And nowadays even more so with the magic of retouching , you can do some pretty ‘weird’ stuff.

After each photo shoot, I would return home ready to wipe off all that glamour.

I vividly remember my brother’s reaction one time coming back@from a Cosmo@cover shoot , his eyes wide and a hint of fear in his expression, as he gawked at me and exclaimed, “What have they done to you?” It was funny and brought me right back to my grounded self.

Frederique van der Wal - 766 Likes - Celebrating my post-birthday weekend (at 56, how crazy is that!) in the Hamptons.

Frederique van der Wal - 655 Likes - Sometimes, when we come across a picture, we can’t help but wonder how we used to see the world back then.

For me,
It was a time of innocence,
free from worries,
filled with discovery and wonder.

Music by Errol Garner , Misty.

Frederique van der Wal - 557 Likes - Life seems to always get interrupted , a wonderful quote from Beatrix Ost which she taught me many years ago.

Frederique van der Wal - 533 Likes - Today is a significant day, marking the anniversary of my mother's passing, many many years ago.

Frederique van der Wal - 501 Likes - All of these pictures are of me, but with very different looks applied.

Frederique van der Wal - 445 Likes - Ikigai is a Japanese concept that combines the terms iki, meaning alive or life, and gai, meaning benefit and worth.

Cheers!

So, here’s to me on my birthday.🍾🎉💃 Cheers! #happybirthday

Frederique van der Wal - 345 Likes - I just learned of the passing of a great photographer Hans Feurer.

I frequently use the quote to remind myself that feeling good about ourselves works both ways - from the inside out and the outside in. Striking the right balance is crucial.

During this particular shoot, the external enhancements truly nourished the internal self, igniting a magical spark.

Frederique van der Wal - 331 Likes - Finding myself back in Florida for a few weeks.

Frederique van der Wal - 326 Likes - Life seems very fragmented.

This week definitely was one to remember , it kicked off with getting lost on a path (🙃) in Shelter, and after walking 11 miles, our asses and legs were completely shot. But it was worth it, so stunning to see all the fall leaves and laughing all the way.

From birthdays to dinners to performances, inspiring talks and underground dancing,
I absolutely love when New York grabs you with its enormous energy.

even at night, which is still a bit unusual for New Yorkers.

One of my favorite things is receiving the Times at the driveway and sitting with my coffee on the bench, listening to spring come alive around us.

Getting some fresh eggs, one of them lays green eggs ;))
playing a game of tennis, going for hikes,

Happy birthday, you handsome you.

Wish we could share a drink today and celebrate you.

I often sense your presence but I long to hear your voice and to be able to take a walk in nature with you (which you always loved doing with us)
and talk about life.

Now, when we take walks , I find myself holding my hands behind my back, just like you did.

Sending you all my love ❤️

Frederique van der Wal - 303 Likes - A glorious day upstate, so lucky.

Frederique van der Wal - 274 Likes - Reflecting on some of these magazine covers always brings a smile to my face.
