Hazen Audel Instagram - We are all visitors on this earth. Kemperi and his family were so significant in shaping how i view and carry out life. We have to listen and watch and care for as much as we can while we have such special people that come into our lives. This is a photo of me at 20 years old embibing life and being so deeply impressioned by the Quichua and Huaorani people along the Napo and Yasuni of Ecuador. The last photo is some 20 years later at least. My thoughts and condolences go to all that had the opportunity to be in the presence of Kemperi. And most certainly my heart goes out to the tight communities along the Cononaco and Noneno. Kemperi was leader to his people in every sense of the word. And an ultimate example of a warrior for the Indigenous. While looking for snakes (and whatever else interesting) along the banks of a lake we spotted a good size snake swimming across the lake. After a very hearty swim and very little chances of success I caught up with it! A copper rat snake. Coelognathus radiatus. Hazen Audel Instagram - When he grows up, he will be three feet taller. Pachyderms= thick skin, as they are referred as. The most amazing mammal to be in the presence of. Nothing at all like them that walks this earth. Their trunks can lift up over 650 pounds and can also untangle pea sized seeds in dry grass and eat them one by one. The second most dangerous animal in Africa- They can lean over trees 3 feet across but can gently caress your hair knowing it's a way to communicate softly. There is a brain in there with feelings built to deeply care for their families. As you know, my respect for nature is immense. I went to investigate and in the tall grass I found a dead hawk that had been shot as it posed a highly unlikely risk of eating their chickens. That night I had a private hawk dinner. Hazen Audel Instagram - While filming in Remote Argentina, the word was out that a man arrived into town and goes into swamps and catches snakes.. Rumors spread, I'm sure with accelerating exaggerations. And a village next door was in need. They had a problem with their water supply, it was full of snakes! During a recent flood (about 3 weeks prior), the well and village became engulfed with water. Some of the local fauna wound up being suck down the well. Birds, frogs and small mammals and - the snakes from the neighboring swamp. As time went on, the Snakes happily fed on their fellow inmates. The local villagers hate snakes, and no one was willing to go down into the dark snake pit of a well and get the occupants out. And so the well remained unusable. Hazen Audel Instagram - Buffalo Warrior. One of the many Kenyan Rangers. Considered a very prestigious position in Kenya. Their job is to protect Africa's remaining wildlife. The wildlife here suffers primarily from habitat loss. Mostly caused from natural areas being over grazed by cattle and goats. In the remaining areas animals are being poached and killed for bushmeat to be illegaly sold. Another atrocious act is the practice of killing rhinos or darting them with sedatives and sawing their horns off (while dead, or alive but paralized due to the sedatives in the dart and then left to die). The horns are then sold to the black market, primarily China and Vietnam, where it is ground into powder and sold as a ridiculous fake medicine that is claimed to cure anything from cancer to hangovers. (Rhino horn is made up of the same material as toenails...) two Rhinos are illegally poached every day for this rediculous and horrific reason. Because of this practice all 3 species of African Rhinos that still exist are all endangered. One of the 3 species- the Northern white rhino- only two are left in the world. Both are females. While working yesterday in the bush I walked upon a scene of a dead juvenile Giraffe being skinned and parted out. It had been caught in a steel cable snare. The poachers soon fled the scene when they saw me. The next day I brought two rangers with me to examine the scene. Overnight the poachers had set 5 more snares (that we could find) to catch the remaining giraffes that were in the area. In the photo I am holding up one of the snares that we dismantled. If poachers are found within the wildlife parks and reserves (Less than 1% of Kenya is federally protected for wildlife) the Rangers have a shoot to kill poacher policy. Hazen Audel Instagram - I dont have a favorite place I've ever traveled to. Asking a fantastical animal lover like myself what my favorite animal is is just plain silly! But I think I know my favorite shelter that I ever built while filming Primal Survivor. I built this one in Biasha territory of China. While living in the forests there I was in constant awe of all of the bamboo that grew giant in expansive forests. And so my mind was always turning about all the fun things I could do with it all. While filming this particular episode. I had ample time to build this shelter and so I built how I wanted. (This is usually not the case while filming on anscedule and making sure i find all my things i need to eat. But this time I had a moment while filming to have a little bit more self-expression in my build. - and so it was an experiment and I Zened out in the craft and in the process. With beautiful bamboo in abundance and a few thousand intentional swings with a machete- a house for a while. With a deck overlooking more lush forest. All the rainwater collected in my rain gutter that I used my green tea in the morning for little extra luxury. If you haven't seen my China episodes- look hard. We made three. Hazen Audel Instagram - While filming in real Remote Kenya with the Rendile Tribe. I would say they live in one of the harshest environments I have ever crossed. They survive by living off of their camels. Drinking Their mild, blood and eating camel meat. Their range has become to brutally dry and hot it is too hot to raise goats and cattle. Hunting is impossible due to the scaresety of game. Yet, with their unique lifestyle they live as proper and proud Rendile. Hazen Audel Instagram - Explitives included so beware. This "invention" of bottled water infuriates me. FACTS: The world produces 1.5 BILLION plastic water bottles a day!! That's close to 25 million tons of plastic a year is made and dumped on river, oceans landfills or burned to go up into the air as single use plastic bottles. Plastic bottles are made out of polyethylene terephthalate, a resin derived from petroleum & natural gas. These fossil fuels are heated up and mixed with water to create plastic. It takes roughly 2 liters of water to make a single 1 liter water bottle. Math= a 1 liter water bottle filled with water takes up 3 liters of water. Do the math on how much water is used up and what happens to all the contaminated water that eventually is dumped back into the environment. Today about 50% of bottled water is filled with spring water "that magically appears and magically is not going into its original destinations i.e streams and rivers. The other half of brands of bottles water comes from filtered tap water. The same places we get water out of our tap to do our dishes, laundy, water lawns, & flush our toilets etc. Same water from the gas station tap as the water you buy there Coca Cola & same company - Dasani makes over 40 differently disguised bottled waters all coming from the same taps of the same one bottling facility. Out of its hundreds of bottling facilities throughout the world churning out different arrays of soft drinks & the obviously even more profitable differently named bottled waters. I plant everything in places with purpose to deter pests. Fences keep out the deer, gophers,and voles. Specially built bird houses at special places to get the specialty birds that come every year to protect my garden and raise their babies. Toads and Gardner and Gopher snakes enter the garden at will and look for slugs and mice that munch on dinner before I get to it. Every year I am always trying to be more self sufficient. Always improving. Always able to give away surplus to friends, family and neighbors. This is how I plan for the future. As you might see on TV. I don't make television programs, I just go to great lengths doing what I love. So I live my passions. And hopefully the record button is on because I love sharing what I get to see and do. Hazen Audel Instagram - Successful hunt. Finishing high-school & 4 months into college going for my biology degree. Frustrated with not learning biology in classes like how I was teaching myself biology. Too immature, or too rebellious to appreciate the additional math, organic chemistry, & all the other classes I was taking. So I left, always hoping I would someday follow through with my degree- once I knew my ambitions of being an expeditionary biologist were really something that could be me. Taking a break/dropping out/running away, or going after my greatest dream w/ lazer focus & reckless abandon. I set off to Ecuador, 680$ for a plane ride, & 78$ to last me however long that would last me in the jungle. Starter cost was a 2 day bus ride from Quito to the end of the road, as deep as something w/ tires could go into the jungle. Very long story short- 8 months later, living in a household, a family, belonging to the Lowland Quichua tribe. There I learned 2 languages, 8 months w/out electricity, and all food coming from the garden, the rivers & the forest. They taught me everything I could learn in a day & every night for all those days. One of the elders in the household was the community Shaman. I of course was far more attentive to his knowledge & teachings than any of my college professors. He graciously gave me his dugout canoe & my family set my course for going deeper. 10 days in a canoe by myself & I might reach the territory of the Huaorani. Again, long story short. I lived w/ the #Huaorani & #Quichua on and off for the next 15 year . I have been taught by the best, and I can only take my own responsibility for how much I perfect their teachings. They have taken me very far... This is a photo from many years ago. Everyday we go hunting. We set off for prized prey but there is never a guarantee. But never a hunt comes back empty handed. With knowledge & drive to survive & feed families the forest provides. Found fruits, roots, honey, baskets full of fish harvested from creeks, birds or bird eggs etc. The hardest days & hungriest nights still bring knowledge that arms success the following days. Hazen Audel Instagram - You go outside you discover. On our last Sawtooth camping adventure we discovered all kinds of things! (You can see more on my previous posts) But this rubber boa was a camp favorite when we found it and it showed it's gentle self off. We were excited to discover it, look at it closely and getting know what it's personality and movements are like and then we're all we're just as excited to watch it slowly slither safely back to the place it was headed for. Then we all celebrate being present in such a beautiful place. Changing our mindsets from fighting and needing, and needing to change everything for our convenience to then being changed into allowing remote wild nature change who we are. And discovering that so much of the world is made of distractions from our peace. The trips I want to be leading are journeys that have been inspired by my learning and my life adventures. And now this shapes my life philosophy and further direction. Nature and people in nature have unwillingly forced me to be who I am. I have been very lucky/fortunate in my life. Hazen Audel Instagram - I do love to grow plants, I love plants, and so I love me a garden. This is my vegetable garden this year. Pumping out vegetables!! All organic. And living this way brings more and more. The turkeys just came in this year. Having a mess of turkeys is like having a herd of mini dinosaurs eating every possible pest. I don't get many insect Pests in my garden. Because I foster the other local wildlife. I have bird houses strategically placed and they are strategically built to get specific predatory birds that are fantastic at eating and keeping my garden free off pests. But also I have garter snakes and toads and other natural predators it takes shelter in my garden. They get food. Can I get lots of food in return. For the most part, insects are not generalists, one species of insect tends to only eat the specific plant its evolved to eat. Certain species or genus, or family of plants have only certain species of insects that like to eat it. By knowing this I don't plant the same kinds of plants in a group, or a row or close to one another. I separate similar genus of plant. That way if a kind of insect likes a certain plant- It can't reproduce there and simply be able to walk or jump over to the same kind of plant next to it. Instead, the pests would have to get across a wall of other plants such as tomato plants, plants in the carrot family, plants in the cucumber family, plants in the bean family, the list goes on and on. Hazen Audel Instagram - Lekeaora, was my host father when I was filming w/ the Samburu in Kenya. When we first met him we asked where his son was. We wanted to do a Primal Survivor National Geographic documentary exhibiting the lives of Samburu warriors. One of his 7 sons, (3 still alive) was living afar with his family's cattle as a warrior. Lekeaora & his wife had no idea where his son was- as warriors are typically gone from the age of 16 & return back at the age 23 years old- the age at which they are greatly respected for their accomplishments & are expected then to find a wife & get married. The search was on for his son. To accomplished the feat of finding them we had to search through leads after leads by other tribal families throughout a vast Samburu and Massai range of thousands of miles of desert, bush & mountains. The search was made more complicated as rumors spread quickly that we were looking for them because of criminal accusations. So some people were giving out misleading information about their possible locations. We got there in the end. The three warriors were ecstatic to see us & to find out we wanted to show off their incredible lives to the world. When we found his son, he was with two other warriors taking care of about 80 cattle in remote dry valley. They were carrying the clothes on their backs, their weapons on hand or strapped onto their backs- machete, spear, club & machine gun. In the leather machete sheath was a large sharpened metal rod to do veterinary work & extract vicious thorns from their feet. They each also had chrome seiko digital watches, & small hand held makeup mirrors. (Warriors are heavily decorated & spend a lot of attention on their impressive appearance) The only other items were carried by a singular cow, a calabash container, and a special bow and arrow for extracting blood from the jugular vien of their cows. (While living and traveling with the warriors for two weeks we only had mik and blood to sustain ourselves) Lekeaora was an energetic & kind man. He took me in and was eager to show me off as his newest family member. We mended lots of fence and spent our days carrying for his animals that were about. More in comments:

Constantly scouring the landscape for new grazing land for their animals. During their time as Warriors they are live outside almost everyday. Sleeping outside under the stars keeping an eye out for predators and other marauding warrior groups that are out protecting as well as stealing other cattle. Here in the Yunnan Province in China the local Indigenouse Dulong people avidly make bee hives out of hollowed sections of logs and placing them on strategic parts of their land. It is wishful thinking for the most part. The chance of the right species of wild bees colonizing these logs is very slim. You can see in some areas there are almost countless hives being made and placed up through the hills and into the forest. Most people in the "modern" world are familiar with the honey bee; Apis mellifera- the European honey bee. But that is a bee that has been hybridized and domesticated and is used for conventional honey production almost throughout the world. But throughout the world there are actually thousands of species of wild bees that don't get much attention. Not all of these bees make honey or if they do it is in much smaller quantities than what European Honey bees are capable of making. Non the less they play an unimaginable importance to the ecosystems they are native to. Here in this region the wild honey from Indigenous wild bees are what the Dulong are after. Often times species or specific colonies of bees will favor specific flowers. Giving the honey distinct flavors as well as distinct medicinal qualities valued in traditional Chinese medicine. Certain honeys can bring high market value. The most sought after honey comes from wild bees that are getting nectar from the wild mountain rhododendron that grows on steep, remote cliff sides. The nectar-honey from this plant is highly toxic. At the same time as being poisonous it is also hallucinogenic. If a family is lucky enough to have a hive with these bees and this kind of honey it is valuable enough to change a family. A means to raise an entire family out of generational poverty. I went to investigate and in the tall grass I found a dead hawk that had been shot as it posed a highly unlikely risk of eating their chickens. That night I had a private hawk dinner. Another atrocious act is the practice of killing rhinos or darting them with sedatives and sawing their horns off (while dead, or alive but paralized due to the sedatives in the dart and then left to die). The horns are then sold to the black market, primarily China and Vietnam, where it is ground into powder and sold as a ridiculous fake medicine that is claimed to cure anything from cancer to hangovers. (Rhino horn is made up of the same material as toenails...) two Rhinos are illegally poached every day for this rediculous and horrific reason. Because of this practice all 3 species of African Rhinos that still exist are all endangered. One of the 3 species- the Northern white rhino- only two are left in the world. Both are females. While working yesterday in the bush I walked upon a scene of a dead juvenile Giraffe being skinned and parted out. It had been caught in a steel cable snare. The poachers soon fled the scene when they saw me. The next day I brought two rangers with me to examine the scene. Overnight the poachers had set 5 more snares (that we could find) to catch the remaining giraffes that were in the area. In the photo I am holding up one of the snares that we dismantled. If poachers are found within the wildlife parks and reserves (Less than 1% of Kenya is federally protected for wildlife) the Rangers have a shoot to kill poacher policy. But I think I know my favorite shelter that I ever built while filming Primal Survivor. I built this one in Biasha territory of China. That's close to 25 million tons of plastic a year is made and dumped on river, oceans landfills or burned to go up into the air as single use plastic bottles. Plastic bottles are made out of polyethylene terephthalate, a resin derived from petroleum & natural gas. These fossil fuels are heated up and mixed with water to create plastic. It takes roughly 2 liters of water to make a single 1 liter water bottle. Math= a 1 liter water bottle filled with water takes up 3 liters of water. Do the math on how much water is used up and what happens to all the contaminated water that eventually is dumped back into the environment. Today about 50% of bottled water is filled with spring water "that magically appears and magically is not going into its original destinations i.e streams and rivers. The other half of brands of bottles water comes from filtered tap water. The same places we get water out of our tap to do our dishes, laundy, water lawns, & flush our toilets etc. Same water from the gas station tap as the water you buy there Coca Cola & same company - Dasani makes over 40 differently disguised bottled waters all coming from the same taps of the same one bottling facility. Out of its hundreds of bottling facilities throughout the world churning out different arrays of soft drinks & the obviously even more profitable differently named bottled waters. Between manufacture & transportation, about 63 billion gallons of oil are used to supply the United States with plastic bottles each year. People use the excuse- well they say they can be recycled. Fact- less than 5% of bottles are able to be recycled. The other 95% again magically dissappear to fairy trash land- aka- out of sight out of mind. Frustrated with not learning biology in classes like how I was teaching myself biology. Too immature, or too rebellious to appreciate the additional math, organic chemistry, & all the other classes I was taking. So I left, always hoping I would someday follow through with my degree- once I knew my ambitions of being an expeditionary biologist were really something that could be me. Taking a break/dropping out/running away, or going after my greatest dream w/ lazer focus & reckless abandon. I set off to Ecuador, 680$ for a plane ride, & 78$ to last me however long that would last me in the jungle. Starter cost was a 2 day bus ride from Quito to the end of the road, as deep as something w/ tires could go into the jungle. Very long story short- 8 months later, living in a household, a family, belonging to the Lowland Quichua tribe. There I learned 2 languages, 8 months w/out electricity, and all food coming from the garden, the rivers & the forest. They taught me everything I could learn in a day & every night for all those days. One of the elders in the household was the community Shaman. I of course was far more attentive to his knowledge & teachings than any of my college professors. He graciously gave me his dugout canoe & my family set my course for going deeper. 10 days in a canoe by myself & I might reach the territory of the Huaorani. Again, long story short. I lived w/ the #Huaorani & #Quichua on and off for the next 15 year . I have been taught by the best, and I can only take my own responsibility for how much I perfect their teachings. They have taken me very far... This is a photo from many years ago. Everyday we go hunting. We set off for prized prey but there is never a guarantee. But never a hunt comes back empty handed. With knowledge & drive to survive & feed families the forest provides. Found fruits, roots, honey, baskets full of fish harvested from creeks, birds or bird eggs etc. The hardest days & hungriest nights still bring knowledge that arms success the following days. (You can see more on my previous posts) But this rubber boa was a camp favorite when we found it and it showed it's gentle self off. We were excited to discover it, look at it closely and getting know what it's personality and movements are like and then we're all we're just as excited to watch it slowly slither safely back to the place it was headed for. Then we all celebrate being present in such a beautiful place. Changing our mindsets from fighting and needing, and needing to change everything for our convenience to then being changed into allowing remote wild nature change who we are. And discovering that so much of the world is made of distractions from our peace. The trips I want to be leading are journeys that have been inspired by my learning and my life adventures. And now this shapes my life philosophy and further direction. Nature and people in nature have unwillingly forced me to be who I am. I have been very lucky/fortunate in my life. Luck come to those that are ready for the luck. So I've worked with lazer focus to be with nature and so- I get very lucky. My favorite thing is to share my fortunes. And living this way brings more and more. The turkeys just came in this year. Having a mess of turkeys is like having a herd of mini dinosaurs eating every possible pest. I don't get many insect Pests in my garden. Because I foster the other local wildlife. I have bird houses strategically placed and they are strategically built to get specific predatory birds that are fantastic at eating and keeping my garden free off pests. But also I have garter snakes and toads and other natural predators it takes shelter in my garden. They get food. Can I get lots of food in return. For the most part, insects are not generalists, one species of insect tends to only eat the specific plant its evolved to eat. Certain species or genus, or family of plants have only certain species of insects that like to eat it. By knowing this I don't plant the same kinds of plants in a group, or a row or close to one another. I separate similar genus of plant. That way if a kind of insect likes a certain plant- It can't reproduce there and simply be able to walk or jump over to the same kind of plant next to it. Instead, the pests would have to get across a wall of other plants such as tomato plants, plants in the carrot family, plants in the cucumber family, plants in the bean family, the list goes on and on. But also I have garter snakes and toads and other natural predators it takes shelter in my garden. They get food. Can I get lots of food in return. For the most part, insects are not generalists, one species of insect tends to only eat the specific plant its evolved to eat. Certain species or genus, or family of plants have only certain species of insects that like to eat it. By knowing this I don’t plant the same kinds of plants in a group, or a row or close to one another. I separate similar genus of plant. That way if a kind of insect likes a certain plant- It can’t reproduce there and simply be able to walk or jump over to the same kind of plant next to it. Instead, the pests would have to get across a wall of other plants such as tomato plants, plants in the carrot family, plants in the cucumber family, plants in the bean family, the list goes on and on. Likes : 2010Hazen Audel - 2K Likes - Lekeaora, was my host father when I was filming w/ the Samburu in Kenya. When we first met him we asked where his son was. We wanted to do a Primal Survivor National Geographic documentary exhibiting the lives of Samburu warriors. One of his 7 sons, (3 still alive) was living afar with his family's cattle as a warrior. Lekeaora & his wife had no idea where his son was- as warriors are typically gone from the age of 16 & return back at the age 23 years old- the age at which they are greatly respected for their accomplishments & are expected then to find a wife & get married. The search was on for his son. To accomplished the feat of finding them we had to search through leads after leads by other tribal families throughout a vast Samburu and Massai range of thousands of miles of desert, bush & mountains. The search was made more complicated as rumors spread quickly that we were looking for them because of criminal accusations. So some people were giving out misleading information about their possible locations. We got there in the end. The three warriors were ecstatic to see us & to find out we wanted to show off their incredible lives to the world. When we found his son, he was with two other warriors taking care of about 80 cattle in remote dry valley. They were carrying the clothes on their backs, their weapons on hand or strapped onto their backs- machete, spear, club & machine gun. In the leather machete sheath was a large sharpened metal rod to do veterinary work & extract vicious thorns from their feet. They each also had chrome seiko digital watches, & small hand held makeup mirrors. (Warriors are heavily decorated & spend a lot of attention on their impressive appearance) The only other items were carried by a singular cow, a calabash container, and a special bow and arrow for extracting blood from the jugular vien of their cows. (While living and traveling with the warriors for two weeks we only had mik and blood to sustain ourselves) Lekeaora was an energetic & kind man. He took me in and was eager to show me off as his newest family member. We mended lots of fence and spent our days carrying for his animals that were about. More in comments:

Here in the Yunnan Province in China the local Indigenouse Dulong people avidly make bee hives out of hollowed sections of logs and placing them on strategic parts of their land. It is wishful thinking for the most part. The chance of the right species of wild bees colonizing these logs is very slim. You can see in some areas there are almost countless hives being made and placed up through the hills and into the forest. Most people in the "modern" world are familiar with the honey bee; Apis mellifera- the European honey bee. But that is a bee that has been hybridized and domesticated and is used for conventional honey production almost throughout the world. But throughout the world there are actually thousands of species of wild bees that don't get much attention. Not all of these bees make honey or if they do it is in much smaller quantities than what European Honey bees are capable of making. Non the less they play an unimaginable importance to the ecosystems they are native to. Here in this region the wild honey from Indigenous wild bees are what the Dulong are after. Often times species or specific colonies of bees will favor specific flowers. Giving the honey distinct flavors as well as distinct medicinal qualities valued in traditional Chinese medicine. Certain honeys can bring high market value. The most sought after honey comes from wild bees that are getting nectar from the wild mountain rhododendron that grows on steep, remote cliff sides. The nectar-honey from this plant is highly toxic. At the same time as being poisonous it is also hallucinogenic. If a family is lucky enough to have a hive with these bees and this kind of honey it is valuable enough to change a family. A means to raise an entire family out of generational poverty.
