Aquaman himself 🧜♂️, our partner, friend and great supporter of whales 🐋 (petition in bio): Hello everybody, I’ve something very important I want to share, it’s happening right now in Iceland. This year, Iceland made a brave decision on June 2th to suspend whaling for the summer, based on animal welfare concerns. Whales were hunted with explosive harpoons, some suffering up to two hours before dying. Two thirds were female and a number were pregnant. The Icelandic government is now deciding whether they can extend the ban into September for the rest of the hunting season. I want to encourage Iceland to maintain the ban on whaling, and to end whaling for good. And I support the Icelandic people who are fighting for healthy oceans and for the whales. Lets celebrate these beautiful creatures and be on the right side of history. All my love, all my aloha. Whales matter. The ocean matters. Please help me. We dont need to be hunting whales. Please sign the petition in @herahilmar bio. Whales are vital to the health of the oceans and our survival on the planet. Whaling has been BANNED in Iceland till the 31st of August 2023! 💙🐋💙 The Ethical Review Board came to the conclusion that there is no way to kill whales ethically, and in the light of those findings @svandissvavarsdottir minister decided to stop the whaling season from starting tomorrow – today! 🐋🐋🐋 As we celebrate the life of these 150-170 whales that now will live 🙏 it is important that we remember that after the 31st of August this decision might be reconsidered. So lets keep educating ourselves, sharing information with friends and family and spread awareness so we can put a full stop to this unnecessary, inhumane act 💙 it is our responsibility ✊🏼 At this point not knowing is a choice. How we treat other human beings, how we treat other animals, how we treat the land and the sea. This othering we keep doing, and this human (not humane) righteousness we have to take what we want and whenever we want it, is killing our hearths and our ecosystem. In Iceland, lately we have been seeing how important it is to guard our waters, our oceans as well as our streams ( check out @aegiswatch ). All is connected. How we treat each other, what we consume, how we do it, and decisions driven by greed for the few versus the good for the whole leave a mark. For generations to come, for all species 🌍 Hope to see you to celebrate the whales still living out there, and their language, that we will be diving into, as well as enjoying some human musicians who we celebrate too 🎵🎶 HVALASÖNGUR Tjarnarbíó 24.feb. 2024. Caption : We had the honour to meet skating legend, marine biologist, artist and environmental activist @peggy_oki , when she came to Iceland for #Hvalagala – where we celebrated the 150 whales that still live because of the summer ban on whaling that our minister @svandissvavarsdottir put into place 🐋✨ Sadly @svandissvavarsdottir has now withdrawn the ban and allowed the whalers to hunt again. The animal welfare laws that she based her decision on are still in place the methods of whaling are still the same. This is to all of us a huge disappointment in our government and wont be forgotten ✊ The hunt has started and today 3 fin whales have been killed 💔🐋🐋🐋 All breaking animal welfare laws and weather/light conditions. Peggy brought with her curtains of 161 origami whales, representing how many Hvalur hf. killed in 2022. 161 fin whales, second biggest animal on Earth 💔 The origami whales had messages from people all around the world; New Zealand, Italy, USA, Hawaii included, UK, and more, where people of all ages and nationalities ask the people of the Icelandic government to please stop killing these beautiful beings 🐋🐋🐋 She brought them to offices of @svandissvavarsdottir (away), @gudlaugurthor (away) , @katrinjakobsd (away) and Parliament (met @halldoramogensen MP from the Pirate party). It is in many people’s interest to tire us out and hope that people give up and forget. But we won’t. Every voice matters ✊ Please share info and look up why whales are so important for our ecosystem and our societies, and in the fight against the climate crisis we are already starting to witness 🙏 We @hvalavinir and @last_whaling_station documented Peggy’s journey here in Iceland, where she also met up with fellow skaters and was interviewed by @be_vax in the record store @smekkleysa_sm .
