Indy Srinath Instagram - 🧟🌽Corn…but make it Spooky!
Meet : Huitlacoche! Or corn smut, or corn truffle. It’s a common delicacy in Oaxaca and is technically a plant “disease” caused by the fungus Ustilago maydis.
It typically grows after a particularly rainy season in sweet corn that hasn’t been sprayed with fungicides.
Side note: I like to tell this to farmers that spray their sweet corn, because if you’re lucky enough to get corn smut, it’s much more valuable than a standard ear of corn. Good for the soil and good for your business 🤝
It has a smokey, earthy flavor that makes it lovely base for fall soups, stuffed in tamales, or as an elote!

Indy Srinath Instagram - 🐐why I used goats to clear my farm instead of a lawnmower 👇🏾
🐐The land was initially covered in raspberry bushes, brush, cacti, and mustard grass that’s gone to seed. As much fun as it can be to let grasses go wild, clearing is necessary for crop production and fire prevention in LA.
🐐I decided to utilize goats from @venturabrushgoats because, unlike using a lawnmower or weed wacker, goats don’t spread seeds around. They digest the plant material and it’s seeds, and poop out fertilizer pellets!
🐐99% of the seeds are destroyed when the goats eat them
🐐I’m committed to regenerative agriculture, and goats regenerate land by adding carbon back into the soil
🐐goats are cuddly
🐐goats don’t require gas! They’re fueled by the brush that they’re clearing. Yay for less dependence on fossil fuels
🐐 I was able to actually rent these goats, it was more economical for me than buying machinery, and it allowed me to support another business that’s passionate about land stewardship

Indy Srinath Instagram - 〰️I probably already told you this when we first met, but when I was a kid, I used to think that people were born with colored fingernails. And of course, here I could probably expound upon intrinsic perceived otherness and inevitability wax poetic on a point that WEB Dubois would applaud, but the real conclusion I’ve come to is that even once my mom taught me about the delightful convenience that is ‘fingernail polish’ I still opted to dye my fingers with poke berries (phytolacca Americana) because they just had an all around better hue and seemed more punk rock than a lacquer in a small glass bottle. So now I’m a full grown family of four (according to the serving size on the back of my Mac and cheese box) and I humbly attest that natural pigments are still the best pigments!
So here’s to staining your fingers with soil and mushroom juice and berry guts and grass and all the other earth things your hands find delight in.

We weren’t finding worms in our apples, a canary long flew from that crimson coal mine. It was incisors gnawing at carnuba wax and seeds surely spit out, pinging against hot asphalt for fear of arsenic, and apples with a hole, even a hint of an inhabitant, were thrown in the bin by a gloved and gray haired lady.
So why did I love the joke?
Maybe it hints at a life hidden deep within the flesh, beneath the fruit, where nectar is supposed to live, that congealed substance, that amber resin. Instead there is something waiting to be born, there’s flowers growing from your neck, there’s a vining heliotrope climbing deep beneath your skin, in the places where time is meant to be sticky and sweet, there’s actually something more. A bitterness, a slimy truth. Something alive//

Indy Srinath Instagram - 🧺 some of you DM’d me for the recipe for these, but like any home cooked meal around these parts, there is no recipe! Yikes. All I can tell you is that the mushroom gravy that I topped these with is made of nutritional yeast, liquid aminos, mushrooms, garlic, onion, flour, and sage.
The biscuits are a mysterious work in progress. Mostly flour and cold butter.
One day I’ll write things down, but even then it’ll probably be on a crumpled, torn off piece of some other important document that will eventually make its way through the spin and rinse cycle, swirling forever in the pocket of a flour streaked denim jacket.

I’m honestly don’t LOVE Amanita muscaria (or sp.) mushrooms, ( 🗣️I said what I said!) but I’m not very crafty and wanted to go for something recognizable.
Next year I’ll venture to create a hypomyces lactifluorum mushroom, but this was so easy to slap together and I didn’t even have to scrape THAT much hot glue off of my couch 🫠

Here are a few examples of phenology:
✨Plant corn when Oak leaves are the size of a squirrel’s ear
✨When the forsythia is in bloom, plant peas, onion, and lettuce.
✨Look for dandelions to bloom before planting potatoes.
✨Perennial flowers can be planted when the maple trees begin to leaf out.
✨When the apple blossoms fall, plant pole beans and cucumbers.
Phenology helps you plant crops on time, without the danger of frost and certain pests.
Planting according to phenology is heavily reliant upon which agricultural zone you’re in. It’s easy to look up your ag zone, then search for phenological planting times according to that.
Climate change greatly affects phenology, so I encourage farmers and gardeners to keep their own phenological journal to record changes over time.

Making lemon lemon leaf herbal soda from foraged fruit is so simple it would be a crime if you didn’t try it.
Just make a tea of lemons lemon leaves. Allow the tea to cool, then strain the liquid into a jar. add local honey and a probiotic capsule, seal the jar and forget about it for a week.
Then it’s ready to drink! 🍹

I’ve experimented with using fuyu persimmon(not as tasty!), speeding up the drying time (too chewy!), and omitting a vodka spritz(mold!), all of which have resulted in subpar sweets.

I grew these mushies using spawn from my friends at @northsporemushrooms, but you can also forage these in the winter or find them at your local market.
To recreate this, simply shove them on a stick in a fun 🦵 shape, whisk dry ingredients (garlic powder, onion powder, nutritional yeast, paprika) with wet ingredients (liquid aminos, liquid smoke, maple syrup, sriracha, olive oil) then coat the mushrooms, bake at 350 rotating the skewer twice for 20 minutes. Yay!

I’ve always believed that keeping recycling out of the bin is the easiest way to reduce our collective impact on the planet.
Most folks are keen to find ways to reuse jars (for takeaway meals, Tupperware substitutes, and vases) but giving them a refresh as decorative pieces is so accessible that it might be a bummer not to do it 🫣

1. what is “going to flower” : I’m referring to annual vegetables “bolting” or shooting up a flower stalk. Seeds follow the flower stalk, so many call this “going to seed”
2. It’s usually my responsibility that they went to flower (they get tough and bitter when they flower, so most don’t eat them at this stage). It’s either because I crowded, planted a cold favoring crop too late in season, or the soil was poor.
3. I can turn my “mishaps” into magic. Most ‘perfect’ gardeners will never see a carrot seed. If you let a couple of bolted/ gone to seed vegetables live out their time in the garden, you can collect seeds that you otherwise wouldn’t have access to.
4. Your plant’s flowers make incredible “companion plants”. So let’s say you pull up 2/4 bolted broccoli plants, and replant later in the season. You’re literally creating the perfect succession companion plant. Bugs that sense the weaker veg will go for your flowering plant, and beneficial pollinators attracted to the flowers will arrive. Your newly planted alternatives will be ushered in by their community in harmony.

Meet : Huitlacoche! Or corn smut, or corn truffle. It’s a common delicacy in Oaxaca and is technically a plant “disease” caused by the fungus Ustilago maydis.
It typically grows after a particularly rainy season in sweet corn that hasn’t been sprayed with fungicides.
Side note: I like to tell this to farmers that spray their sweet corn, because if you’re lucky enough to get corn smut, it’s much more valuable than a standard ear of corn. Good for the soil and good for your business 🤝
It has a smokey, earthy flavor that makes it lovely base for fall soups, stuffed in tamales, or as an elote!

After a full two years of searching, researching, hoping,resting, working, sweating, and intention setting: the community urban farm is here!
Here’s the lowdown:
🌱it’s located in my neighborhood, the historically black part of LA: Leimert Park. Also, Chumash Tongva Territory.
🌱right now it’s a blank canvas! Raw land that is being happily cleared by my goat friends from @venturabrushgoats
🌱I’m clearing around 1200 sq feet right now, and working with LA Land Trust The Community Garden Council to secure the adjacent lots for farming!
🌱The land cost 130k, and through your donations totaling to over 40k, creating sponsored content in alignment with my voice intention as an artist and grower I was able purchase this plot (shoutout to eating rice and beans though)
🌱I can’t wait to begin bringing volunteers onto the land, but for now I’m letting the goats do their thing. And letting the soil rest.
Thank you endlessly for all your support throughout the process. Specifically my @imgmodels fam, my @origins team, my @natgeotv fam,my real estate agent @garrettwarrenofficial , all of you who gave 5 & 10 dollar donations because you want to see the dream through, all of you who were able to redistribute your abundance, and of course to my black and brown community who dreamed this into existence.

This is a MOVEMENT not a MOMENT.
I keep telling folks this because agriculture, farming, gardening,houseplant care, and slow food are not just trends nor hobbies—people are honestly and faithfully returning to a real connection to the land. For black and brown communities or anyone who is of a demographic that is disproportionately affected by food insecurity, but often left out of the conversation for solution—this show is for you.
And for folks who are no longer reading because I just made this post “about race”—this show is for you. Because farming is about celebrating and accounting for differences in existence. The tomato doesn’t deny its redness, the sun doesn’t shade it’s own shine.
I cannot fully put into words what a beautiful experience it has been to be able to help farmers achieve their personal farm dreams across our country.
I truly feel like the planet needs more farmers but also more feel good visual experiences.
I’m sure that this tv show will serve as both.

Indy Srinath - 6.4K Likes - 🐐why I used goats to clear my farm instead of a lawnmower 👇🏾
🐐The land was initially covered in raspberry bushes, brush, cacti, and mustard grass that’s gone to seed. As much fun as it can be to let grasses go wild, clearing is necessary for crop production and fire prevention in LA.
🐐I decided to utilize goats from @venturabrushgoats because, unlike using a lawnmower or weed wacker, goats don’t spread seeds around. They digest the plant material and it’s seeds, and poop out fertilizer pellets!
🐐99% of the seeds are destroyed when the goats eat them
🐐I’m committed to regenerative agriculture, and goats regenerate land by adding carbon back into the soil
🐐goats are cuddly
🐐goats don’t require gas! They’re fueled by the brush that they’re clearing. Yay for less dependence on fossil fuels
🐐 I was able to actually rent these goats, it was more economical for me than buying machinery, and it allowed me to support another business that’s passionate about land stewardship
I hope this inspires you to go out and hug a goat today :)
