Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - We’ve been keeping this news pretty quiet this time around because we’ve been feeling the desire as an ‘ohana to protect this intimate and tender celebration of new life.

But as Malia begins this transition through the third trimester it felt Pono to share publicly that 2023 was our last year as a family of 3. We are excited to announce that in the cusp between March and April of this year we will welcome a new aloha ‘āina to the world. May they be fed by the ‘Ike and nourishment of our ancestors and be fortified by the empowering aloha of this lāhui & community near and far. May they and their generation know a Palestine and Hawai’i that is free.

❤️🖤💚

We are surrounded by abundance and have everything our little ohana truly needs. But if you feel called to honor this upcoming arrival with a makana we’ve got a registry in the link in my bio. And most of all we LOVE preloved clothes ❤️

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - Monday me’e: The incomparable Kumu Haunani-Kay Trask. Video from some time in the later 90s I think (maybe early 2000s) filmed at Kamakakū’okalani.

“Where is it gonna go? I don’t know” I think that’s for our haumāna to decide. Because you, too, are a part of a historical moment. What are you going to do about that?
Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - “There is an invisible plume of poison working its way through our underground water systems
And the only people who know the exact extent of it
Dont give a fuck about us
In fact, while preparing a suit against the state for demanding they drain the tanks the @usnavy insists:
“It is not the fuel in the tanks, but the fuel in the water that’s making us sick”
Let me say that again
The US navy says: “its not the fuel in their tanks, but the fuel in OUR water that is making us sick”
And I give no fucks about their lyrical gymnastics
There is no rewriting themselves out of fault”

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - Leialohaanohoanaʻapiʻapi Edward Kealakaluheaokaipalaoa Osorio was born on ka piko o wākea, March 19th 2024 at 645am.

Leialoha emerged in this wao under the protection of our kupuna with a big and powerful voice. At almost 3 weeks early he was still 8lbs 2oz and 19.5 inches long 😳. May the gods bless Malia and her little kino and big spirit for carrying this little ancestor into the world. Like all of our little ancestors, he has brought us ‘Ike and important instructions. I pule that we heed them 🖤🐋
Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - In April of 2021 the Honolulu Police Department shot down and killed an unarmed 16 year old Chuukese boy named Iremamber Sykap. A few months later the police responsoible were in court waiting to see if they would be charged. On that day Malia, myself, and a small group of our friends joined a couple dozen of Irememaber’s family and firiends to wacth over the proceedinsg from outside of the building. We stood across the street while we wtached hundreds of Kanaka Maoli and other local people arrogantly pace about the courtroom steps in their ugly “Back the Blue” “Hawaiʻiʻs finest” t-shirts. i will never forget the shame i felt that day, seeing so many of our people standing with the state, with police violence, with extraditial murderers.. while a small handful of us stood with our oceanic cousins.

It was humbling to offer this poem in the presence of our oceanic cousins during our week of @festpachawaii considering the ways our people (kanaka Maoli) continue to fail to live up to our kuleana to our “Micronesian” and “Melanesian” ohana in and beyond Hawai’i. I hope this poem and ones like it can help us to take a serious look at our behavior and allegiances. Iremamber Sykap was indigenous to our moananuiākea. He was loved by our ocean and ʻāina. He should have also been loved by us. He should have also been held by us. He should have also been protected by us.

Do not come here to excuse or justify the murder of this young boy or to spew any kind of overt or thinly veiled anti-micronesian hatred/racism. you will be blocked.
Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - This is the closing section of my keynote for the Moananuiākea symposium at FESTPAC. I think insome ways nicely sums up what I tried to deliver.

Throughout the keynote I spoke about Kamehameha and his legacy is expanding the institution of the puʻuhonua and institutionalizing principles of refuge and sanctuary into his governance. I asked the audience to consider what it would mean for those principles to again be applied at the core of our practice of sovereignty. I asked us to consider what it would mean to then extend that practice beyond the domestic, and even beyond the moana into our conceptions and practices of sovereignty globally. I asked us to consider the urgency of this work as genocides continue to ravage on in West Papua, Palestine, the Congo, Sudan… I asked us to consider what sovereignty means if it isnt pursued and practiced towards the liberation of all peoples. I offered that perhaps this means we need to entirely rethink and re-imagine what self determination means.

I understand many of the reasons that this is not the “mainstream” position of many of our peoples. But I believe this moment is asking us to take a far more radical approach to our self governance. Let me be clear, no one is more equipped to lead hawaiʻi than Hawaiians. No one more prepared to lead oceania than our Indigenous pacific peoples. and still without a radical reimagining of sovereignty and self governance — our own people can lead us into a practice of governance that sacrifices the “unrecognized” to the ravages of genocides, rising seas, raging fires, and extractive capitalism. I am still asking that as we continue to take back our kuleana to manage our resources and govern our Aina and moana that we also take back our basic principles of refuge and sanctuary. i am asking that we do, what @joyenomoto so clearly called us to in 2020, “become puʻuhonua for each other” towards a genuinely secure and abundant future.

Remember that when Kumu Haunani said “we are not American” she also spoke of the wrongful occupation of Palestine in the same breath. Remember that our ea is tied to their ea. that none of us are free until all of us are free.

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - I fell in love with lāhaina from the deck of this canoe in 2021. And It was on Hōkūle’a where I stood today and cried as I watched videos of these devastating fires swallow her up. There are reports of people leaping into the ocean as they tried to escape the burning flames. I cannot help but think of the words of Ka’ōpulupulu to his son when they were to be killed, “I nui ke aho a moe i ke kai. No ke kau ka hoi ua ʻĀina”

The videos and images are horrifying. The stories we are hearing from our Maui family are devastating. so The collective grief is so heavy. And all I have is this aloha for this beautiful aina and the kanaka who lived, loved, and were fed by her. May we all find a way to offer our resources and support to those who need it most. See @kakoo_haleakala for the best way to get resources to where they need to be.

Ke aloha nui

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - Free Palestine ✊🏾

Hawaiʻi as been an “essential” and “strategic” component of the United States military operations since the United States first leased Pearl Harbor in 1875. Following the US BACKED overthrow of our sovereign constitutional monarchy, US military operations have only expanded. With a rigorous eye towards the mechanisms of that proliferation, it is hard to imagine that any expansion of American (or western empire) has been achieved or maintained since the 19th century without some sort of connection to Hawaiʻi’s ongoing Military Occupation and the training readiness and weapons testing taking place in our home.

With this history and present in mind, as Kanaka, we must face every aspect of US military violence and US backed military intervention (including the ongoing genocide in Palestine) as being intimately connected to the creation and maintenance of Hawaiʻi as a military state. Our liberation as Kanaka Maoli is intimately tied to the liberation of our Palestinian ʻohana— and any other ʻohana struggling under the weight of American and western military prowess. Understanding this history (and studying at the feet of my beloved Kumu, Haunani-Kay Trask and Teresia Teaiwa) has informed my own internationalist approach to the liberation of our peoples. We must learn that in the specters of war and death we should be both concerned with where and how weapons are used for war to kill and control– and where and how they were developed, tested, and trained. At both end of this spectrum are Indigenous people suffering under the violent power of imperial forces. This violence is cyclical. Our intimate connection and commitment to each other through an international approach – is the only thing that can transform the world and save our lives. In the brilliant words of Maya Angelou, “none of us are free until all of us our free”

It is from this position that I say unequivocally and without reservation— we must not only end the genocide but also commit fiercely to ending the ongoing occupation in Palestine.

From Hawai’i to West Papua, from the Congo and Sudan to Palestine— liberation for all peoples living under oppressive regimes.
Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - My ‘ohana lives in Wahiawā. In on of the seats of American imperial power. Where at 8am — every morning and without fail— you will hear the American imperial anthem. Where at 6pm the bugle sings. And inbetween and after there are rounds of ammunition fired into our forests, shells of bombs that shake our homes foundations. Helicopters that hover hover hover until their vibration makes your stomach turn.

These days— each of these shaking sounds carried my mind to Palestine. I wonder what it means for my children to grow up with these same sounds and tremors of violence. While, in an occupation a whole world away, children rarely grow up at all. We are tragically linked— Hawaii and Palestine. Hawai’i and anywhere American backed intervention or expansion pressed through the barrel of a gun. But we are also linked by something else that is far more profound: Love.

Love for our aina. Love for each other. Love for liberation and struggle and a future (and past) only we can see. And because of that — I believe that we will win.

We were in Vancouver / Granville island for the last few days. Today in the early hours of twilight we pushed away from Granville island and began our journey towards Salt Spring Island. When we arrive we will@be greeted by the Wsanwc peoples and some kanaka too! Cant wait!

Here’s some photos from the last stop. Mostly pictures I’ve taken for Kaleiwohi with her favorite doll Hau(wahine). But also a picture of an aunty (Kau’i) I met in Vancouver who grew up with my ‘Ohana in Keaukaha. She said she remembers my great grandmother. Kūpaianaha nō.

No matter where we are we’re all thinking about home and our Ohana who have been suffering in the wake of these fires. I am inspired by the way our community has come together yet again to support the needs of our people while our local government and federal agencies take their damn time.. doing god knows what. Another reminder that we got us, always. No matter what.

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - “Palestine is setting us free” - @karima_the_dreamer

Palestine is setting us free from the lie of imperial “securities”. Palestine is setting us free from the half ass dreams of reconciliation. Palestine is committed to the fullest articulation of liberation and freedom. Palestine is calling us simultaneously to decolonization and abolition— to deoccupation and demilitarization. Palestine is setting us free. And we are indebted to her and her peoples for it. We owe her our love, our ongoing commitment, and our endurance in struggle.

As Kanaka, we are bound to Palestine and her peoples — not only by a shared experience under occupation and settler colonialism. Not only by the sibling shelling we hear in the morning light. We are bound to her by something far more precious. We are both peoples born and raised by ancestors who would never dare stop fighting. We come from generations of leaders who would never accept the crumbs of our colonizers. And We are both the parents and grandparents of the future generations of freedom fighters who will carry our names on their tongues and our courage in their hearts. We share this mo’okū’auhau.

Today and tomorrow, we are siblings in struggle. We are ohana in our belief and commitment to liberation. We will never forsake this family.

From the hale, to (the) kahulileole’a, to the the audience — legends among them, to the artists on and off stage… the evening was pure love and perfection. Mahalo to @olapakauwila.wilz , aunty @vicky_takamine and the whole @paifoundation team for making this dream a reality.

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram - Proud partner moment. Today @malialia was awarded a prestigious arts award at UHmānoa, the Matt Smith Award in Printmaking.

Malia is a typical artist activist. She prefers not to be the center of attention, and rather fade into the background while pumping out critical activist art/posters to honor and support our movement work. But I am really thrilled that her artistic excellence and passion is being recognized.

Malia went back to school in the middle of a global pandemic, and over the last 3 years developed her art making and critique as a dean lists student all while growing, birthing, and raising two incredibly beautiful children. I know in the end, Kaleiwohi and Leialoha will be our most precious creations. But it is wonderful that along the way we will be surrounded and inspired by malia’s beautiful and powerful art.

I love you @malialia, we are so proud of you. Stop telling people this isn’t a big deal, cuz it is.
You are my favorite artist.

“Remember— Hawaiʻi is the “tip of the spear”—where the US military and his friends extract, test, train, and perfect their death dealing operations. We must follow this thread to its ultimate conclusion: The training, testing, and extraction taking place in the Pacific is the fuel for ongoing genocides in West Papua, Palestine & elsewhere. The development of militarized riot control techniques is instrumental to the terrorizing of public citizens across Turtle island. And because Hawaiʻi (and the pacific) sits at this crucial site of imperial violence – it is imperative that from your positions that you come to understand Hawaiʻi’s context, your relationship to it, and relate that back to your own struggle, love, and disciplined hope.”

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio - 2.3K Likes - In April of 2021 the Honolulu Police Department shot down and killed an unarmed 16 year old Chuukese boy named Iremamber Sykap.

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio - 2.1K Likes - This is the closing section of my keynote for the Moananuiākea symposium at FESTPAC.

Got to talk with other wahine from the pacific about decentering men and disrupting non radical spaces (win). Got to see/ take some photos with people I love but have no real documentation of our pilina 😂. And Got to share all these experiences with my keiki & then blew their minds by showing them the wa’a and star compass in festival village (majah revolutionary mom win). Let us not forget that to resist American control here means we must resist American (and European) imperialism and militarism everywhere. Remember that when Kumu Haunani said “we are not American” she also spoke of the wrongful occupation of Palestine in the same breath. Remember that our ea is tied to their ea. that none of us are free until all of us are free.

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio - 1.6K Likes - I fell in love with lāhaina from the deck of this canoe in 2021.

I am in awe of what it means to stand among these truth telling trouble makers. I know for sure that many of us will remember tonight for the rest of our lives. From the hale, to (the) kahulileole’a, to the the audience — legends among them, to the artists on and off stage… the evening was pure love and perfection. Mahalo to @olapakauwila.wilz , aunty @vicky_takamine and the whole @paifoundation team for making this dream a reality.

In the end, brother @izikfamous said it best, “I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you”

All of you.

Caption : “The poets (by which I mean all artists) are finally the only people who know the truth about us.” – James Baldwin (via sister @terisasiagatonu ) I am in awe of what it means to stand among these truth telling trouble makers. In the end, brother @izikfamous said it best, “I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you” All of you.

Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio - 0.9K Likes - Proud partner moment.

Get the navy out of pu’uloa 💥& watch out if your wahine meets a surfer 🫠🙃. I mean — if the mele bellow can overcome the charm of a surfer.. nothing can 😂

O Līhuʻe ke hele ʻia
(O līhuʻe she has gone)
Honi aku i ke ala o ka mauʻu
(Sniff the sweetness of the grass)
i ke ala o ke kupukupu
(the sweet scent of the wild vines)
E lino ʻia ana e ka Waikoloa e ka makani he Waiopua lā.
(Twisted about by the stream Waikoloa and by the winds of Waiʻōpua)
Kuʻu Pua
(My cherished flower)
Me he pula lā i kuʻu maka, ke ʻoni i ka haku ʻōnohi
(It is as though there is a mote in my eye, that blurs the vision)
Ka wailiu i kuʻu maka, auwe auē
(that turns to tears, I am lost, I am lost)

How lucky am I to get to teach beside this brilliant man? What a blessing to watch my students cherish him and the ‘Ike he offers them. This is a semester I’ll never forget ❤️
