Caption : One of the best ways to combat domestic and intimate partner violence is by creating safe spaces for victims and survivors to come forward. However, they won’t do so unless we start normalizing conversations about this pervasive issue without judgment. Normalizing the conversation enables us to amplify our prevention efforts as well. We can’t keep urging victims to come forward or encouraging our children to tell us when someone is harming them, only to not believe them and shame them when they do. We need to do better. Normalize the conversation. Support victims and survivors. Advocate. Be a voice. Caption : Hearing myself introduced as a “lifetime advocate” at the celebration of Ameya’s Place was incredibly moving. I could barely hold it together as Joanna Otero Cruz, the president and executive director honored me with such high regard. Even now, reflecting on that moment leaves me speechless and deeply affected. 💜❤️ Looking back ten years to when I first entered Ameya’s Place—abused, homeless, and broken—it’s hard to believe how far my daughter and I have come. Even in those dark times, I knew in my heart that it wasn’t the end but a new beginning. The next four months at Ameya’s Place was my crucible for transformation. I rebuilt my life from scratch, taking full responsibility for my path forward. I owe an immeasurable debt to Women Against Abuse and the safe haven that is Ameya’s Place. Without the relentless commitment of its dedicated staff to end domestic violence, I can’t imagine where I’d be. I understand that I can never fully repay what they’ve given me. Instead, I strive to embody the essence of giving back through my ongoing commitment to serve others. This journey has shown me that with determination, love, and the courage to seek support, anything is achievable. Caption : More than a survivor 🔥🤌 _________ I wholeheartedly love this chapter of my life. I was so afraid of becoming more because I didn’t want to leave any part of MMA behind once I retired. I knew my purpose was to give and help others, but I just didn’t know what it looked like until I stopped worrying and got out of my own damn way. It’s amazing how effortlessly your life unfolds when you simply allow it. Everything I gained in the last 20 years will flow with me into this new chapter. The hard work, sacrifice, long hours, blood, sweat and tears will always be there but I won’t be moved because I know exactly who I am and why I’m here. Caption : Escaping an abusive relationship is often times the most dangerous. Victims are statistically more likely to be un-al*ved in the first two weeks of leaving than any other time in the relationship. When abusers feel like they’ve lost control, they became extremely dangerous. I consider myself one of the lucky ones… When I fled and experienced homelessness as a result of that, ultimately finding refuge at a domestic violence emergency shelter, it was the best decision I could have made for myself and my daughter. Walking through those doors was my second chance, I was finally free. Losing it all wasn’t the end for me, it was the beginning of the rest of my life. I rediscovered myself and reclaimed my power through mma. Training everyday gave me purpose and the strength to fight the daily battles off the mats. I went on to win a championship title and achieved my goals in MMA. Now retired, I’m a domestic violence advocate and board member at @womenagainstabuse, the same organization that saved my life. I am also a motivational speaker and educate women and children on self defense. I wouldn’t change anything about my journey. It has shaped me into the person I am today- the person required to light the way for others. There is so much life to be lived, dreams to chase, memories to create, and love to experience. The key component to rebuilding was love. The love I had for my daughter and myself- if was too profound to let me surrender. Caption : It’s so amazing how life falls into place when you simply let go and trust the process. Reflecting on my retirement last year, it wasn’t just a transition; it was a complete loss of identity that left me heartbroken. Despite being surrounded by an incredible support system, I was at war with myself. I was unable to accept my new reality and lived in denial. Falling deeper into depression, I began seeking validation through new ventures and pursuits that lacked alignment with my purpose. I was desperate for that familiar rush of competition and achievement, but the truth is, nothing compares to the feeling I was searching for. At the end of 2023, it was time for change. I refused to stay where I was and was no longer willing to be a volunteer victim of MYSELF. I literally convinced myself I was inadequate, complaining about it A LOT without ever taking action. Admittedly, it sounds absolutely insane—and that’s because it was! 😵💫 Deep down, I knew my calling and the person I needed to become, but I still ignored the small voice inside. Imagine that voice as a fussy toddler on an endless road trip, incessantly asking, “Are we there yet?” Literally torture 😆 BUT when I finally embraced that inner voice, I decided to take the leap, trusting that I would learn to fly on the way down, everything changed. By living intentionally inside my purpose, I created space for the abundant growth and opportunities that had patiently awaited my acceptance. Some may question how I could battle depression when I exuded positivity. The truth is, positivity is a powerful tool, but it cannot single-handedly dispel inner turmoil. Some of the most positive people who appear to be happy, are the ones you should be checking on. Here’s what I’ve gleaned from this journey: – Trust yourself implicitly. – Take the leap. – Use positivity as a guiding force, but recognize that true happiness comes from within, through decisive action aligned with your purpose. – Embrace and accept yourself. Caption : We had an amazing time volunteering with @Philabundance this morning 💚 We worked in the distribution warehouse sorting and packing several tons of food that will be shipped to those in need. 🫶 The girls gave up their Saturday morning, post long week of testing, rolled up their sleeves, got dirty (faces included! 🤣), and worked their butts off 💪😍 I’m grateful for the chance to show them how to make a difference, to be truly present, and unplug from their phones. 🙌 👏 Life’s too short to miss out on what really matters.
