Yes, I really can ride my bike for just 30 minutes. It ends up tasting like blood in my throat rather than gummy bears…
@liz600_bike_challenge is a hill climb cycling race for everyone that took place for the first time yesterday. Organized by René from @ride_kiss (whose group rides in Innsbruck have already become incredibly popular), all the spots were sold out for this inaugural event.
The best part was actually the social interactions: I met the oldest participant, the youngest participant (who heartwarmingly told me she had seen all ‘my’ films 🥹) and meeting friends from my triathlon past.
I have to say, it was a good shock to the system, but I’ll stick to the 10 hour rides... ☺️
Can recommend!

![Jana Kesenheimer - 2.6K Likes - After riding for ultra’-long, one usually notices it in the body here and there, mostly even a week later (look at my numb fingers). And before my brain romanticizes everything, it’s time for a race recap from the @theunknown_race
We got the coordinates of the first checkpoint at 6 am. I planned the first route within 10 minutes during my breakfast. We started at 7 am in Vienna at @starbike_wien The first 25km were neutralized, so it was relaxed chatting with familiar and new people. There was even time for a communal pee-pit stop in the bushes before we climbed up the cobbles to Kahlenberg. After that, the path became quite lonely, with an ever-chilling headwind towards the west.
By 12 o’clock, I was in a snowstorm, already wearing my rain pants and pulling my hood over my ears. Before reaching the first checkpoint, I wanted to put an end to this - it seemed infinitely stupid to ride a bike in this wet cold for days - but the train station just didn’t come. Sometimes it’s good that scratching isn’t so easy. Because when I finally reached the station, at the ‘Gesäuse’ mountain range, the road suddenly dried up, and I shouted to the sky as the sun briefly came out. That was a sign...
So it happened that I found myself in the evening with several other riders in a kebab shop, where I shivered while devouring falafel and looked for a place to stay for the night. After a snowy pass descent, a bed after 360km and 4500m elevation gain for 3.5h was an oasis!
I continued at 4:40 am, the second checkpoint was in Slovenia. Somehow, I chose a route that no one else took, a bit more elevation gain but fewer kilometers (and earlier Slovenian sun). It seemed like a good idea until I had to wait 40 minutes at a construction site. You can imagine how maddening that was - but before I emotionally lost it, I decided to have a stretching session. My knees thanked me! Yoga for the win.
Arriving at the 2nd checkpoint, I was informed that I would have to ride the last 300km back the same way... done. Phew. [continue in the comments]](https://www.gethucinema.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Jana-Kesenheimer-47-33YgJd4085.jpg)

![Jana Kesenheimer - 2.4K Likes - For the Easter days, we again adopted „Italian“ nicknames, and so it happened that I, aka Italjana, cycled from Bologna to Elba (and back) with Cappuchali @ali___popp and Stefano Calzone @stephan_wieser (who both showed off their „extra“ bike riding style when I filmed…).
Isola d’Elba and Tuscany were beautiful as expected, despite Sahara sand in the stormy air. But my highlight was the Apennines on the way back: narrow, paved roads, lots of altitude meters, and no other person (not one car) in sight for miles. So, we greeted all the cats, horses, and whatever else crossed our path along the way... Buongiorno!

Caption : For the Easter days, we again adopted „Italian“ nicknames, and so it happened that I, aka Italjana, cycled from Bologna to Elba (and back) with Cappuchali @ali___popp and Stefano Calzone @stephan_wieser (who both showed off their „extra“ bike riding style when I filmed…). Isola d’Elba and Tuscany were beautiful as expected, despite Sahara sand in the stormy air. But my highlight was the Apennines on the way back: narrow, paved roads, lots of altitude meters, and no other person (not one car) in sight for miles. So, we greeted all the cats, horses, and whatever else crossed our path along the way… Buongiorno! Stats: around 920km, 17.000 moa Route (highly recommended!) on my profile @komoot 🌳 [.] @ali___popp ___ unpaid ad (Markennennung) @specializedde #iamspecialized #bikepacking #aethos #ultracycling #cycling #bikelife #roadbike #italiaLikes : 2425

![Jana Kesenheimer - 1.8K Likes - After diving back into the ultra scene over the last two weekends, I’m still torn about this extreme sport. When filming our project „NO DEAD ENDS“ - the documentary about @jananas.banjana - it was only @hannes.hohfeld and me covering the 24 hours of Jana’s race: he, increasingly incredulous with each passing hour of the race, questioned how the human body could accomplish such feats. And why anyone would even undertake them. Meanwhile, I found myself understanding it more deeply. Fascinated. Empathizing with Jana’s drive. I love this kind of mindset game.
Ultra races push us beyond our limits. Whether this is healthy in the long run is certainly debatable. However, I appreciate these events because the sheer numbers [elevation gains, kilometers covered] make us pause. Think. Reflect. They showcase what our bodies are truly capable of. They compel each person to reconsider where they stand, what might be possible and why they do or don’t pursue certain challenges - now as they know, what their bodies are capable of.
Take, for example, the Ultra Trailrun in Lofoten last weekend with 100 miles. Brutal. Majestic. And the weekend before, the @zuri_escape bike-packing gravel event, with its daunting 10.000 meters of elevation and 400 kilometers of distance. These experiences are more than physical tests: they are journeys into our own mental landscapes. Pushing us. Exploring the boundaries of our endurance and resilience.
Through these races, we engage in a profound dialogue with ourselves. Each step and each pedal stroke is a testament to human potential. In these moments of extreme effort, we discover not just our physical capacities. We uncover our inner strength. Our reasons for pushing forward. And somehow, our true selves.
Ultra events offer an unique glimpse into what we can achieve. They push us to our limits and beyond, making us question, reflect and ultimately understand the depth of our own capabilities. They let us disconnect from the noisy, busy everyday life filled with too many decisions to make, inviting us to focus on one thing for a very long time. As Jana puts it: „It’s easiest to keep moving forward - it’s much harder to decide to stop.“ ♥️](https://www.gethucinema.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Jana-Kesenheimer-9-V8ltrf3548.jpg)

As Jana puts it: „It’s easiest to keep moving forward - it’s much harder to decide to stop.“ ♥️](https://www.gethucinema.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Jana-Kesenheimer-10-sfTGvR336.jpg)

Caption : After diving back into the ultra scene over the last two weekends, I’m still torn about this extreme sport. When filming our project „NO DEAD ENDS“ – the documentary about @jananas.banjana – it was only @hannes.hohfeld and me covering the 24 hours of Jana’s race: he, increasingly incredulous with each passing hour of the race, questioned how the human body could accomplish such feats. As Jana puts it: „It’s easiest to keep moving forward – it’s much harder to decide to stop.“ ♥️Likes : 1839

Enjoying “mild”-ish and good cycling days, we somehow found ourselves playing flu roulette, a game that Alex @ali___popp graciously passed on to me – I take it as a souvenir (besides pistachio creme). Caption : „Allez, pédalez, Bonne Chance Les filles“ – That’s what a maybe 6-year-old sang to us at the start of the climb towards Petite Ballon. It’s funny because his melody accompanied us for the rest of our trip, and whenever things got a little exhausting, we sang this to motivate each other. The Vosges surprised me with their beauty even more than I expected – it felt like the „little Pyrenees“ to me. It was my first time going bikepacking with a trio of women, and it was awesome. We found beautiful bivouac spots along the route, and besides indulging in cake, coffee, ice cream, and all those lovely things, we covered more than 600km and almost 12,000 meters of ascent in four days – with the weather on our side. I love everything about this trip! Caption : After crossing the Japanese main island from Kagoshima to Hachinohe during the @japanese_odyssey by bike, we now still can’t say more than hello (Konichiwa), thank you (arrigato) and ok (hai). But what we learned: no one will steal our bikes here, everyone is nice. Secondly, the snacks reveal an endless variety of discoveries (we soon no longer asked ourselves what they were, but only whether they tasted good). Thirdly: intensive long cycling in a pair is definitely as least as much fun as a sleep deprivated solo mission. Over the course of 2600 kilometers and 40,000 meters of altitude gain in just 9 days, we’ve embraced a mix of bivouacking and hotel stays, while also contending with autumn weather that not only painted the landscape with beautiful colors but also gave us a bit of a runny nose. We captured so many photos during this journey that it was challenging to decide what to share first, but “Hai,” here we go! ______ @specializedde @tailfincycling @pi_rope @7meshinc @supernova__design @evocsports @dotwatcher.cc @bikepackingcom #bikepacking #cycling #bike #bikelife #japan #cyclinglife #sworks #tailfin #biketouring #cicloturismo #bikewander #adventurecycling #adventure #outsideisfree #bicycle #bikepackinglife #biketravel #biketour #worldbybike #cycletouring #cyclingphotos #ridetherope #roadbike #bicycletouring #fromwhereiride #adventurebybike #travelbybike #iamspecialized #gravelride #travelLikes : 1636

Caption : Finding people who spontaneously love spending the whole weekend on their bikes, getting up at 5:30 am just to start in a cold (and salty) drizzle, but then sharing the best views and snacks for many many kilometers, is just easy – ever since I started participating in „Ultra“ events. Shoutout to the Well-known Alex, Alpinist-Sebastian, Kurier-grinder-Simon, young-wild-Anatole, and myself, cruising with Home-Turf-Markus, who joined on Sunday. We’ve been hitting up some of Austria’s finest: from Seefeld, detouring through Bavaria to Hochfilzen, then up to Hochköngig, Hallstatt, and looping back via Red Bull to Salzburg. We covered ~430k and ~5200moa in two days, spending the night in an Appartement, packing light: I brought a down jacket, a hooded rain jacket, gloves, an offbike-shirt and leggings, bike tools, a toothbrush, a powerbank cables, a rescue blanket, and snacks. @ali___popp @sebastiansarx @gwiggner.simon @anatole_naimi @m4rku5.z1mm3rm4nn __ Ad, unpaid @specializedde #iamspecialized @evocsports #bikepacking #cycling #bikelife #austria #UltraCycling #WeekendWarriorsLikes : 1461

Caption : What, you’re still cycling? – is a sentence I hear quite often lately. Indeed, I cycle less, and I run more (yes, run), and go skiing (both the thin and thick kind). Winter bikepacking, it must be admitted, is considerably less smooth than in the summer. Still, I’ve made it a tradition with Simone to be on the road for three days every winter. And, what can I say, we had to clean the bikes from the mud sometimes twice a day, but the Pistachio Dolci and the tired legs made us as happy as we’ve been in a long time. My face was red from the cold and sun on Monday. Our journey began in Ticino, where we swiftly conquered 10.000 moa, albeit a bit slower pace on Sunday haha. Naturally, the pizza and dolci game remained strong, just like the nonsense banter in some of our minds… oh and not to forget, we indulged a bit of a ferry game too. Routes on strava.
