Jen Gunter Instagram - I am not sure what happened to the caption but I think everyone figured it out! I married the love of my life @drjenadjacent.

My son did my make up. My best friends were there. My kids were awesome. And I make my own bouquet from Walgreens that day.

Jen Gunter Instagram - It’s been a rough few days, but today was the hardest. It is agony to see your kid this scared, and to have to be a rock. I didn’t lose it until I left the OR. They let me go back with him and hold his hand while he drifted off.

He’s got several more hours to go.

Just trying to think positively about his amazing team and how far surgery for young adults with congenital heart disease has come.
Jen Gunter Instagram - The idea that people think that providing free menstrual products to children is a bad thing boggles the mind.

But hey I am team #TamponTim and I love the Santa Claus for periods quip 😂😂😂

Also, you can do your bit by putting menstrual products out in the open in a bathroom at your house where guests can find them. Even if they don’t need them, just having them out in the open is a small step in breaking down the ridiculous stigma about menstruation.

Jen Gunter Instagram - This is really awful.

The chaos is unimaginable.

We need quality medical research. I mean we need it because we need it, but if funding dries up labs will close. Good researchers will leave if they can.

This is really unprecedented. Along with leaving the WHO and pausing updates from the CDC and FDA?

Are they shutting it all down to go through with a fine tooth comb and defund anything related to reproductive health? Vaccines? Food safety?

I just don’t have words…and of course no one knows how long this will be and then what will be left when the smoke clears.

Jen Gunter Instagram - What an amazing #internationalwomensday

I was honored to be invited to Parliament Hill to participate in a meeting with the Prime Minister @justinpjtrudeau and the most amazing group of women who have made so many changes for women in Canada and around the world. This was so special, and also bittersweet as this was the Prime Minister’s last meeting as PM.

I met some amazing women, such as Dr. Diane Francoeur from the SOGC. And was thrilled to see @melissagrelo who joined us virtually! There were so many women there who are making amazing things happen for women and they are not going to stop. And while there is a lot of badness and things are feeling dark, for the first time in a while I feel hopeful. And that is one of the powers of community!!!!!

Happy IWD everyone. And because of this meeting, I have some ideas and I am really hoping to shake up some shit! I am inspired!!!!

Jen Gunter Instagram - Just saw this over on Twitter from @yvettenicolebrown and wow. It made me think in one of those record-scratch-freeze-frame kind of moments. It gave me the bad chills.

And if you are thinking about leaving a comment suggesting I stick to medicine…health care is political!

Jen Gunter Instagram - Love this pharmacy vending machine at USC! No GYNO crap to be found!

Instead, birth control pills, plan B, condoms, tampons, COVID tests, and hydrocortisone (the thing to use in a pinch for a bad vulvar itch instead of Vagisil, the devil’s own sav. (Vagisil has benzocaine and this can cause allergic reactions and irritation. And we hate Vagisil because of they are a massive part of the feminine hygiene industry invested in the messaging that women smell).

Jen Gunter Instagram - Just shaking my head.

A trade war.
Gutting government programs.
Gutting research.
Threatening people who are exercising their right to protest?

The list goes on.

Americans, if you have not see Trudeau’s amazing press conference, you can find it on YouTube

Jen Gunter Instagram - We are at this awful place because of politics. There is no abortion law in Canada, and so women are not bleeding to death or dying from sepsis in parking lots.

Wonder why we don’t have affordable contraception, better studies for menopause, or even a basic understanding of endometriosis? Wonder why it’s so hard to find health care professionals in many places? The root of so many issues is related to politics.

While it is clear that many previous governments could have done better by women in many ways, we have one party that is actively trying to harm women. And if the GOP is elected, we can almost certainly expect a national abortion ban.

And if a national abortion ban won’t affect you, or you think it won’t because you may one day have a daughter or daughter in law with ruptured membranes and an infection at 19 weeks, remember this: in the United States abortion is the canary in the coal mine. Contraception and IVF will be next. There are many dark turns this could take.

And for those who are still not swayed. Pharmaceutical companies will almost certainly stop testing new drugs on those capable of getting pregnant, because a miscarriage could be viewed as an abortion.

And any health care professional upset over the Scientific American endorsement has made it clear what they think of the suffering of women.
Jen Gunter Instagram - I mean…

First of all, many women don’t want children and that is awesome. People deserve reproductive choice!

Maybe the sky high maternal mortality, lack of guaranteed paid family leave, the high cost of health care, unequal pay, criminalization of abortion, criminalization of miscarriage, cost of pregnancy (medical and physical), cost of childcare, and so many other social failings of our society are playing a role? Just a thought?

Oh, and how “programs” like this (menstrual classes? Pretty sure those are not going be factual) assume that the sole purpose of women is procreation?

Fascist regimens do like to reward the “right” women for procreating though… 🤮

Jen Gunter Instagram - Fascinating article on the “blue zones,” areas of the world that have the longest lived humans. Or supposedly have. Turns out the data is very suspect, and these areas have terrible birth records and/or are rife with pension fraud, so deaths don’t get registered.

The article is well worth the read. I was simultaneously infuriated, intrigued, and frustrated.

I remember diet books from 25 or so years ago claiming the Okinawa diet was special because they had so many people over 100 years old. From the article:

“Okinawa in Japan is one of these zones. There was a Japanese government review in 2010, which found that 82% of the people aged over 100 in Japan turned out to be dead. The secret to living to 110 was, don’t register your death.

The Japanese government has run one of the largest nutritional surveys in the world, dating back to 1975. From then until now, Okinawa has had the worst health in Japan. They’ve eaten the least vegetables; they’ve been extremely heavy drinkers.”

I mean…sigh.

But do read the article, link is in my stories!

Jen Gunter Instagram - Trump has ended Dr. Fauci’s security detail. When I saw Dr. Fauci speak in 2023 he needed two very large federal agents for security, which is horrific. This man has dedicated his life to saving lives and to educating generations of doctors. It was Dr. Fauci that brought the idea that would be PEPFAR to Bush to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV in several countries where the virus was most prevalent. It is estimated to have saved 25 million lives.

We are suffering from an epidemic of disinformation. And Trump, in cancelling Fauci’s security claimed that he had enough money, which alludes to the lie that Fauci personally profited from vaccines for COVID. He makes about $120 a year from a monoclonal antibody.

Scientists at the NIH do not get rich from vaccines. They are allowed to make an additional $150k a year from patents. This is allowed, because there needs to be some way to keep people at the NIH otherwise the larger salaries in Pharma would drain all the talent. What happens to the left over money from drugs and tests and reagents developed by the NIH? It goes back to the NIH to pay salaries and fund research.

So no, Fauci and other NIH scientists did not make $710 million in royalties.

Swipe to read the salient points from the article.

And anyone insulting Fauci will have their comment removed and will be restricted from replying. This is all publicly available information, and if someone led you to believe otherwise, get mad at them for lying.

Jen Gunter Instagram - On Friday, Dr. Oz, who never met a medical scam he couldn’t promote for profit finally said the quiet part out loud when he was sworn in as the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services:

It is your patriotic duty, I’ll say it again, the patriotic duty of all Americans to take care of themselves because it is important for serving in the military, but it is also important because healthy people don’t consume health care resources.

And

The best way to reduce drug spending is to use less drugs ’cause you don’t need them, ’cause you’re healthy. And it feels a lot better, as well.

This is a page right out of fascism. It is othering people and creating a mythical past when we were all healthy. There are so many parallels between fascism and wellness, so I was not surprised at all with Oz’s choice of words.

I wrote a long piece about this on The Vajenda. It’s cruel and very concerning. The water is boiling and we are in the pot.

There are so many ways Medicare and Medicaid can be restricted and used to further weaken medical care. It’s really frightening.

And Oz is just an awful person and apparently void of empathy. Just the man for the job.

There are so many ways Medicare and Medicaid can be restricted and used to further weaken medical care. It’s really frightening.

And Oz is just an awful person and apparently void of empathy. Just the man for the job.
Jen Gunter Instagram - A couple of related thoughts.

The first, from the incredible insightful Carl Sagan. I used this quote at the end of my talk at the @festivalofdangerousideas

It think of this a lot when people attack me or get mad when I focus on evidence and the scientific method. Sunk cost fallacy is so human.

The second is a very insightful comment from @hankgreen about vibes over facts.
It seems to me that in women’s health there is a lot of this.

I’m sure there is an essay in there somewhere…

Jen Gunter Instagram - Just received official photos for the meeting with @justinpjtrudeau celebrating IWD and all the important work from some amazing women and organizations, like @actioncanadashr

Listening to so many people dedicated to improving lives through science was empowering. And it is clear to me that the greatest threat we face is disinformation.

Once again, thank you Prime Minister for your dedication to women’s rights and your leadership.

Jen Gunter Instagram - Canada, this is not a drill. The Conservatives want to restrict abortion. Abortion rights are on your next ballot!!!!!
Jen Gunter Instagram - If you plan on living to age 85, you are a 50% chance of getting shingles, which can be very painful and also cause stroke and inflammation of the spinal cord, among other complications. In addition, about 5-15% of people who get shingles will develop post herpetic neuralgia, which can be a very painful condition.

Enter Shingrix, the newer shingles vaccine which offers excellent protection (reduced the risk of shingles by 97% vs placebo). It also has long lasting immunity (10 years and counting), and is as effective for people over 70 as it is for people who are 50.

I wrote about the vaccine for The Vajenda, including the side effects. It does have a greater risk of side effects than many other vaccines. I had almost all of them and was knocked flat for 24 hours. But it was worth it for the degree of protection from this very safe vaccine! Hope you head to the link in my LinkTree to read more!
Jen Gunter Instagram - I wrote about an interesting new study published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine, about treating male partners to reduce the risk of recurrent bacterial vaginosis.

There’s actually been a fair amount of research trying to solve the puzzle of bacterial vaginosis. We know that it is a dysbiosis, and beneficial lactic acid producing lactobacilli ate replaced with anaerobic bacteria. We also know that biofilms, which are communities of microorganisms that adhere to surfaces are also important.

While we know that sexual activity is associated with bacterial vaginosis, we don’t have an understanding of how this happens in the same way that we understand how chlamydia or HIV are transmitted. Previous studies treating male partners with oral antibiotics have been disappointing. This study takes a new approach, looking at both oral and topical antibiotics for men.

The results are impressive. When women took antibiotics for bacterial vaginosis and their male partners were not treated their risk of recurrence within 12 weeks was 63%, but when their male partners were treated, the risk of recurrence was 35%.

I hope you head over to TheVajenda.com to read more about the study
Jen Gunter Instagram - Interesting piece in @nymag on Huberman, the King of Science-ish optimization and supplements. If anyone personifies profiting from the quantified self, it’s him. So many supplements, so little good science to support them. For example, his expert collection at momentous includes Fadogia Agrestis for hormone support, but hormone support is a medically meaningless term. There are no studies on the page supporting its use, but a claim is made that it can raise levels of LH and increase testosterone. I found one study in PubMed from 2005 showing Fadogia agrestis increased testosterone levels over one week…in male rats. There are a few rat studies, but no clinical trials in humans that I could find. And no studies on female mice. The product seems marketed to both men and women to build muscle and optimize whatever. Obviously, this means it is safe and effective for humans to take for 4 weeks at a time, with a one week break before starting again (heavy sarcasm).

Swipe to see the quote from his people that left my jaw on the floor.

I’ll put the link in my stories.

Since it was unclear to some people, the jaw on the floor is Sarah said they wanted to have children together and his spokesperson qualified that they were making embryos. I was thinking how Sarah must have felt reading that. I don’t think embryos are children. (I’ve edited this for clarity).

Jen Gunter Instagram - There is a lot of disinformation out there.

However, there are reputable places to find good information. Swipe to see the video of my quick search for “Is mifepristone FDA approved.” Numerous reputable sites came up, like the FDA, ACOG, and KFF to name a few.

Since the question is about the FDA, that is the best place to look. In addition to a statement from the FDA indicating mifepristone was approved in 2000, in the search you can see also the package insert, which would only exist if the medication is FDA approved.

Asking questions is fine. Like I said, a lot of disinformation out there. But anyone telling you that mifepristone isn’t FDA approved is a lying misogynist (not gonna mince words).

He’s got several more hours to go.

Just trying to think positively about his amazing team and how far surgery for young adults with congenital heart disease has come.

Jen Gunter - 7K Likes - Trump has ended Dr.

Jen Gunter - 6.6K Likes - On Friday, Dr.

Jen Gunter - 5.2K Likes - If you plan on living to age 85, you are a 50% chance of getting shingles, which can be very painful and also cause stroke and inflammation of the spinal cord, among other complications.

Jen Gunter - 4.9K Likes - I wrote about an interesting new study published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine, about treating male partners to reduce the risk of recurrent bacterial vaginosis.

Jen Gunter - 4.9K Likes - Interesting piece in @nymag on Huberman, the King of Science-ish optimization and supplements.

Jen Gunter - 4.7K Likes - There is a lot of disinformation out there.
