Ironic that 38 years later—I’m helping drive the company that saw some promise in the scribbles of a young, aspiring artist. Thanks Dick. Your friends were the motivation I needed to keep pushing on. Jim Lee Instagram - I was at dinner with the family when I heard that my friend and former WildStorm editor Sarah Becker, aged 53, died earlier this week. It’s days later and I’m still struggling to process the finality of her being gone. It’s even harder for me to convey the impact she had on so many of us back in the 90’s. As an editor, she was hired for her particular and quirky taste, and that in turn influenced and inspired many a storyline. If you were a reader of our comics back in the day—know that she was a caring soul who took the time to read every bit of fan mail that came in from you all and that she loved responding in kind. Beyond WildStorm, she was of course on the Real World: Miami and then later worked at Disney Publishing. Always a free spirit and fiercely independent, she then went on to work for Britney Spears when she was on tour and then did the same as Aaron Carter’s tour assistant. After those crazy adventures, she then jumped fearlessly into the world of life coaching and trauma counseling. A pretty damn eclectic life journey that suited a pretty damn eclectic, special person. I will always remember and cherish Sarah as the doyenne at the heart of a group of some of the most talented, and unique, young group of artists who really defined the energy, style, and appeal of the mid-90’s WildStorm era. Many of these artists who Sarah helped discover and nurture have already shared their heartfelt, personal stories of the time they spent with her as a friend, confidant and colleague at WildStorm. For me—it’s hard to describe those times; in many ways, you had to be there to truly understand. Or maybe it saddens me too much to go there. I can only offer up some snapshots from back in the day which capture the memory of her and the spirit of the times. Rest in peace, Sarah ❤️

Jim Lee Instagram - I was at dinner with the family when I heard that my friend and former WildStorm editor Sarah Becker, aged 53, died earlier this week. It’s days later and I’m still struggling to process the finality of her being gone. It’s even harder for me to convey the impact she had on so many of us back in the 90’s. As an editor, she was hired for her particular and quirky taste, and that in turn influenced and inspired many a storyline. If you were a reader of our comics back in the day—know that she was a caring soul who took the time to read every bit of fan mail that came in from you all and that she loved responding in kind. Beyond WildStorm, she was of course on the Real World: Miami and then later worked at Disney Publishing. Always a free spirit and fiercely independent, she then went on to work for Britney Spears when she was on tour and then did the same as Aaron Carter’s tour assistant. After those crazy adventures, she then jumped fearlessly into the world of life coaching and trauma counseling. A pretty damn eclectic life journey that suited a pretty damn eclectic, special person. I will always remember and cherish Sarah as the doyenne at the heart of a group of some of the most talented, and unique, young group of artists who really defined the energy, style, and appeal of the mid-90’s WildStorm era. Many of these artists who Sarah helped discover and nurture have already shared their heartfelt, personal stories of the time they spent with her as a friend, confidant and colleague at WildStorm. For me—it’s hard to describe those times; in many ways, you had to be there to truly understand. Or maybe it saddens me too much to go there. When put side by side as I’ve done here—they form this double page spread image. Whenever I do giant pieces like this I think of the late, great George Pérez and contemporaries like @philjimeneznyc and @ivanreisart. They are the masters at these kinds of ‘wallpaper’ compositions, and you don’t realize the incredibly challenging these kinds of compositions are until you attempt them yourselves!

Easily logged in over 10,000 hours with 9 children at school recitals, rehearsals, plays, science presentations, back to school nights, gymnastics, Girl Scouts, competitive cheer, flag football, soccer, ice skating practice, ballet, dance, hunter jumpers events, gallery shows, birthdays, weddings, comic cons, store signings, and emergency room visits (usually on big national holidays at 11pm at night) and more! It’s frankly more than a full time job, and one which doesn’t have a clock in, clock out option. Every night, I crash out within 5 minutes of hitting head on pillow but she spends an hour plus, rewinding and replaying the days events with the children, like the Tom Brady of moms, reviewing post game footage to better tackle the next day. She still finds time to carve out time and space for just her and me and even a personal day just for herself. Not quite as rare as Haley’s comet or a quadrennial February 29th but it’s close! All of which makes it even more daunting to behold (and inspiring!). So thank you, babe, on being the hero we need and making our family the joy and center of my life. I love you endlessly! I’m not sure what my parents had in mind other than the pursuit of the American Dream when we landed in Warren, Ohio, back in 1969, but I thank them for taking such a huge leap of faith and creating a new home filled with love and support here in this great country for my sister and me.
