As you move through life, not everyone will like you, or what you are trying to achieve, but that’s okay. Nurture a strong sense of self, and a clear purpose for what you are doing, and doors you never imagined possible will open.” @inspiringgirlsint #ThisLittleGirlIsMeLikes : 13597

It was a thrill to meet with artists from the @apy_ac_collective yesterday, including Pitjantjatjara woman Sally Scales, whose work I selected to include on my Christmas Card for 2021. It was a pleasure to see the artists at work in their studio, and hear about the creativity and the culture that drive their works. We do have to find a way of hitting that tone when it’s justified or when behaviours go uncalled out or unaddressed or only addressed meekly or politely. And one thing I do think about the coming generation of feminists and activists is they’re less worried about being characterised as impolite.” Thanks to @stellarmag & @sarrahlemarquand for chatting to me ahead of my upcoming events in Melbourne (sold out) and Sydney for ‘Not Now, Not Ever’ to mark 10 years since the misogyny speech. As a proud South Australian, I thank the Premier for inviting me to play a role in helping all our children to thrive in the first five years of life through access to high quality early childhood education and care. Education policy has been a career passion of mine, and I am delighted to now have the opportunity to support the next important steps to improve the early childhood education system in South Australia. Life chances are defined early and I want every child in SA to be set up for success. 🔸You can learn more about the Commission via the link in my bio.Likes : 10467

Caption : The documentary, Strong Female Lead, about my time as Prime Minister, is bound to generate debate and questions. I haven’t seen it, but I am aware of the content, as of course, I was there. When I reflect back on my time as Prime Minister, my predominant emotion is one of gratitude for the opportunity. Being Australia’s first female Prime Minister will always remain the greatest honour of my life. I live my life according to the mantra we can’t change the past, but we can change the future. That doesn’t mean the historical record is irrelevant, because it is only by analysing it that we can glean the lessons that will help us shape the best tomorrow. The Strong Female Lead documentary will play a positive role if it is watched in that spirit, and spurs more gender equality activism. #strongfemalelead @giwlkings @giwlanu ⬆️Link to full written statement in my bioLikes : 9267

Caption : I am terribly sad to learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. My thoughts are foremost with the Queen’s family and friends at this time. She was dearly loved and the Royal Family will be grieving her loss deeply. Millions of people around the world will be pausing and reflecting on her loss, and life of service. The Queen has been a powerful presence for as long as many of us can remember. She was a remarkable role model; responsibility for service thrust on to her as a young woman, and taken up with grace, devotion and dignity during her reign. The Queen will be remembered as an extraordinary monarch who witnessed – and influenced – the trajectory of modern history. I am in awe of the Queen’s legacy and remember my own personal meetings with her fondly, especially at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth. She was strong and steadfast, but also kind and had an engaging sense of humour. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be mourned but forever remembered. 📸- Getty ImagesLikes : 8847

Caption : Ten years ago, on this day, I gave my final speech as Prime Minister. At the time I said, “The reaction to being the first female prime minister does not explain everything about my prime ministership, nor does it explain nothing about my prime ministership…and it is for the nation to think, in a sophisticated way, about those shades of grey.” “What I am absolutely confident of is it will be easier for the next woman and the woman after that and the woman after that and I’m proud of that”. I still feel that optimism and I am heartened by the fact that the Labor Government which leads our nation is more than fifty per cent women. Change is possible and is happening, but progress is not linear. The intense contemporary discourse around women in Parliament House is backward looking, personalised and vindictive. It is time to adopt a new tone and approach. Every women who works in Parliament House in any capacity should feel safe and respected. We know from the past we have not met that standard. Working together to change that, in Parliament House and every workplace around the country, is what should be the focus now. Ten years on, I still believe in the positive power of politics. It gives an unparalleled opportunity to put your values into action for impactful, lasting change at a national and global level. I was Prime Minister for three years and three days and in that time, we passed 561 pieces of legislation. My government was able to establish the National Disability Insurance Scheme, undertake major education reforms, launch the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Childhood Sexual Abuse, introduce an emissions trading scheme and improve our standing in the world – just to name a few highlights. I will always cherish the opportunity I had to be Prime Minister, and I remain hopeful I will see other women serve as prime minister in my lifetime.Likes : 8369

Caption : Today is a day that will give rise to complex and conflicting emotions. For many, it will be a time of deep pain and sorrow. I want to acknowledge that 26 January is scorched into the consciousness of many First Nations people as a day of profound mourning. As the Chair of Beyond Blue – an organisation with a mission to support everyone in Australia to achieve their best mental health – I believe it’s vital we recognise the grief that this day can evoke. It’s a date connected to the ongoing impacts of colonisation. Dispossession, violence, disempowerment and the fracturing of ancestral and cultural knowledge are a source of historical and ongoing trauma that continues to impact on the social and emotional wellbeing of First Nations people. As we understand more about our history, more Australians are reflecting on how to engage with 26 January. These conversations may be challenging but they are necessary for us to mature and heal as a nation. Beyond Blue continues to advocate for action to Close the Gap, to improve social and emotional wellbeing, and to prevent suicide. We support the Uluru Statement from the Heart and a First Nations Voice to Parliament. While we cannot change our past, we can learn from it. If we accept the truth of our shared history, we can walk together in a spirit of healing and reconciliation towards a brighter future. If you find this day difficult, support is available. Caption : It is with many and mixed emotions that I announce I will be stepping down as Chair of @beyondblueofficial at the end of this year. I first joined Beyond Blue as a Board Director almost 9 years ago, before becoming Chair in 2017. Since its creation in 2000, Beyond Blue has been a trusted source for mental health information and support in Australia, and it’s been a true privilege to help ensure that continued. During my 7 years as Chair, the organisation has continually adapted to the changing world around it and met an ever increasing demand, particularly during the Covid pandemic which created a seismic shift in the way we lived. Beyond Blue has evolved and grown its free, 24/7 mental health supports and services, and this year we launched Strategy 2023 , which can be described in three simple words: Earlier. Easier. Together. The strategy, along with Beyond Blue’s new partnership with Lifeline, will allow the organisation to focus on prevention and earlier intervention. Supporting people before mental health issues arise or they reach crisis. It’s been a thorough pleasure to work with the wonderful and supportive team at Beyond Blue, led superbly by CEO Georgie Harman. The difficult decision to step down is made somewhat easier by knowing I am passing the baton onto a fantastic successor. From 2024, Beyond Blue’s Chair will be Sam Mostyn, a highly respected businesswoman and advocate for a multitude of issues including climate change and gender equity. I’m pleased to be remaining at Beyond Blue as a Patron.Likes : 6566

And that’s exactly what we need when we talk about mental ill health. I was thrilled to share a cuppa and a bite to eat with Masterchef legend Julie Goodwin and cooking sensation @nats_what_i_reckon as part of @beyondblueofficial Big Blue Table, a new event to start important conversations about mental health and raise funds for people impacted by anxiety, depression and suicide. From October 1 to 8, to mark the start of World Mental Health Month, we’re inviting you to host your own Big Blue Table – whether it’s by having a long lunch with colleagues, decking your whole kitchen out in blue, or having a picnic in the park with friends and family. Every dollar raised will go towards keeping up with ever increasing demand for Beyond Blue’s support services, which have received record contacts over the past few challenging years. Tara has gone on to write her critically acclaimed novel The Yield, which was one of my favourite books of 2020. A Wiradjuri woman, Tara speaks to me on the latest episode of A Podcast of One’s Own about her childhood, the unlikely tale of how she became a published author, and the power of storytelling to give a voice to underrepresented communities. It’s a raw and heartfelt discussion, and I’m deeply grateful to Tara for trusting me with her stories. I know you will enjoy listening to them too. We discussed the recently released Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care. The University of Adelaide is already undertaking groundbreaking research on early childhood development, through its BetterStart research program. I thank BetterStart researcher Dr Rhiannon Pilkington for joining me on stage to discuss her important work, and to BetterStart PhD Candidate Anna Kalamkarian for delivering a vote of thanks. Caption : 2021 has been an unusual year for all of us. I have spent some of it in lockdown, and much of it away from home. That should have meant lots of time to read, but somehow there never seems to be enough! Because I have been stationary for long periods, I have tended to buy and read physical books, whereas I rely much more on my kindle in times of frequent travel. For a number of works I have enjoyed the kindle and audio book combination: this lets me listen when walking, and read on the couch. For me, once again, the works of women authors have loomed large. I very much enjoyed Piranesi by Susanna Clarke, which won the UK Women’s Prize for Fiction. However, I recognise fantasy novels like this aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. A wonderful book-devouring friend of mine hated it, so consider yourself warned. I also loved The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi. Kate Mosse, an accomplished author who pushed to create the prize for women’s fiction, came on my podcast this year. In preparation, I read her most recent work, An Extra Pair of Hands, about the experience of being a carer, and two of her historical fiction works, The Burning Chambers and the City of Tears. I enjoyed them all. Closer to home, but still in the genre of historical fiction, I enjoyed Mirandi Riwoe’s Stone Sky, Gold Mountain and Kate Grenville’s, A Room Made of Leaves. In this turbulent world, I was also drawn to novels that predict the future and in doing so try to shed some light on contemporary political problems. I would recommend Hillary Clinton’s and Louise Penny’s State of Terror, and 2034, A Novel of the Next World War by Admiral James Stavridis and Elliot Ackerman. A new Kazuo Ishiguro novel is a delight to be savoured, Klara and the Sun is a must read. I would thoroughly recommend Jeremy Farrar’s and Anjana Abuja’s, Spike:The Virus vs The People – The Inside Story, which, as you can tell from the title, is all about the pandemic. For a very different book, which will take you far away from the world of COVID 19, try A Dutiful Boy: A memoir of secrets, lies and family love by Mohsin Zaidi.Likes : 4205

Caption : Today I released the interim report of The Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care in South Australia. In recent months, the Commission has heard from expert witnesses, key stakeholders, and South Australian parents about the importance of quality, fairness and accessibility of early childhood education and care services. I am grateful for all the insights shared. The Interim Report details the Commission’s vision for the future of preschool and outlines a pathway for the delivery of preschool for all South Australian 3-year-olds, with roll out beginning from 2026. This is an exciting opportunity for South Australia to lead the world and transform early years services for our state’s children. There is still time to have your say on the 33 recommendations in the Interim Report and the work of the Royal Commission overall, which can be submitted via the Royal Commission website until 19 May 2023. Inquiries continue into workforce supply, how to ensure universal availability of Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) and the role of early childhood education and care in supporting children in their first 1000 days, for inclusion in the Royal Commission’s Final Report. The final report is due to be released in August. You can find a copy of the Interim Report, and provide feedback via the link to the Royal Commission in my bio.Likes : 4061

The way a child grows, learns and develops in the years before school is pivotal. The Commission lays out 43 recommendations designed to take South Australia on a pathway of change that will see our state lead on early childhood education and care. A shift this major will take time, policy energy and resources. Given my own experiences with the demands and complexities of government, I understand and respect the processes the State Government must now undertake. I thank each and every person who took the time to engage with the Royal Commission. This report has been enriched by your insights. Thank you also to the remarkable team I’ve had the great pleasure of working with over the past year, and to our State Premier, @pmalinauskasmp for trusting with me with this important work.
