This record is dedicated to the memory of my beautiful nephew Calder Powell Excited and moved to share the magnificent cover art by childhood friend @cequarles whose incredible work I am always grateful for New song “Spinning” out now with a crazy magic video by the great @giraffestudios North American tour dates are on sale Friday. presale begins tomorrow Jan 10 at 10am local. pw: ChAiTiUs4eva Photo by @camille_blake Produced and arranged by Julia Holter Co-produced, engineered, and mixed by @kennethjohngilmore Mastered by @heba_kadry @beth_goodfellow – drums, percussion @dev_hoff – fretless bass, double bass Julia Holter – voice, keyboards @suitesweetz – flute, piccolo @chrisspeed11 – saxophone, clarinet @tashiwada – synths, bagpipes With additional contributions by @sarahbellereid (trumpet and electronics); and @nitejewel, @jessikakenney, and @miadoitodd (voice) Assistant engineers: @tyler_karmen and @gemmacastro__ Recorded at 64 Sound and 101 Recording, Los Angeles Album art by @cequarles Insert photo by @dicky_bahto Design by Matthew CooperLikes : 6085

Caption : i have a new song to share called “Sun Girl”. was curious about embodying some kind of a mystical playfulness, and, in doing things like recording myself repeatedly hitting the table with my iphone and sampling it, it brought me into a production style that reminds me of some of my earliest stuff (“Coyotes of the Canyon”? lol). some poetic focus here on rerouting the neural pathways, pushing out into the unknown, playfulness and chaos. Excited to share this song with a beautiful animated video by the great Tammy Nguyễn Very grateful for the stunning single art by Christina Quarles Photo by Camille Blake (styling by Mich Parilla and HMU by Berenice Ammann) Thank you to all the remarkable musicians involved in the making of this song Elizabeth Goodfellow —drums, percussion Dev Hoff —fretless bass Julia Holter—voice, Yamaha CS-60, Mellotron, Moog Opus 3, Prophet-6, samples/field recordings, drum programming, lap steel guitar Maia aka Sonjia Denise Hubert Harper—flute, piccolo Chris Speed—tenor saxophone Tashi Wada—Oberheim OB-X8, bagpipes Julia Holter—writer, producer Kenny Gilmore —co-producer, engineer, mixer Tyler Karmen, Gemma Castro —assistant engineers Heba Kadry—mastering Video and animation by Tammy Nguyễn Additional animation by Harry Chen, Kevin Chen, and Yibu Xu @tnpain @cequarles @camille_blake @michelleparrilla @berenice_anmann @beth_goodfellow @dev_hoff @suitesweetz @chrisspeed11 @tashiwada @kennethjohngilmore @tyler_karmen @gemmacastro__ @heba_kadryLikes : 3453

Caption : @weareumaw has been doing some serious work on this streaming issue. Join us 🌈 Repost • @weareumaw One stat you won’t find in your Spotify Wrapped is how much artists are paid for all that listening on the platform. The max possible in 2023 is $0.003 per stream. And in 2024, Spotify will stop paying anything AT ALL for 2/3 of the tracks on the platform. Spotify gets away with this fuzzy math because there is no regulation over streaming. UMAW is working to change that, and we have big plans for 2024. Join us!Likes : 2926
![Julia Holter - 2.6K Likes - The passing of composer Yoshi Wada has hit me in many ways, as he was both a creative inspiration to me and the father of my partner Tashi. I’ve witnessed a beautiful symbiotic relationship between Yoshi and Tashi—how Yoshi’s life work and the artistic environment he surrounded himself with provided a fertile foundation for Tashi’s own artistic explorations and also ways of thinking about art, and in turn, how Tashi, in his adult life, has supported Yoshi’s work, through his label Saltern among other things, and collaborated with him in various settings—recordings, sound installations, and performances. While a lot of children of artists might choose another path, it’s great that Yoshi’s two children were encouraged enough by him, as well as by their artist mother Marilyn Bogerd, who took many of the great photographs of Yoshi’s work and also performed in his pieces, to both become artists—Yoshi’s daughter Manon Bogerd Wada is also an artist and sculptor. Caption : here is a new song “Evening Mood”, with a beautiful film by Dicky Bahto (link in bio) in the lyrics is the word “alove”, originating from the song Chaitius on my last album Aviary. maybe alove is a mind state. I was trying to channel oxytocin. And Ponyo was on my mind again, the fish who turns into a little girl. I was inspired by the transformability of creatures, and how this works alongside our capacity for love. Dev Hoff’s fretless bass lines are a crucial foundation for this song, and an equal counterpoint to the vocal. Chris Speed’s clarinet soars birdlike above Beth Goodfellow’s filtered heartbeat drums and Tashi Wada’s sparkling Prophet pads. Caption : i wish everyone could have a sky as clear of bombs as i am fortunate to have right now. i’m heartbroken and terrified about the recent violence against Palestinians and Israelis. Sending love to all affected by the horrific attack of Hamas on Israelis and others in Israel and the hundreds held hostage, and by the endless airstrikes from the Israeli government on the people of Gaza. As a US citizen, I feel I must speak up against the current merciless bombing, impending ground invasion, and deprivation of basic human needs thrust upon thousands of Palestinians besieged in Gaza, that the US gov has a major role in, and that could lead to genocide. I do not feel that either Israeli or Palestinian lives will be protected in any way by this. let’s call our reps and demand a ceasefire and immediate de-escalation and release of hostages and prisoners, protest, and do what we can to push leaders in charge to actually prioritize human lives over profits and fear. will share resources in stories #ceasefirenowLikes : 1570

Caption : inspired by the students. a student at the Occidental College Gaza Solidarity Encampment asked me about political actions i knew of in my time in college. i remember watching with horror the start of Bush’s “shock and awe” that was catastrophic for the people of Iraq and we marched against the US bombardment there but no the student mobilizing wasn’t something big like this. the organization and thoughtfulness of these students is inspiring and desperately needed. as yet another genocide unfolds, brought on in large part by my own country, and as all our reps ignore our calls for ceasefire month after month, the students are speaking out in a big way that is actually resonating. and yet at UCLA and USC here in LA so many peaceful student voices are being suppressed by some at the schools themselves and police, and many violently so. what are we doing? free Palestine, ceasefire now thank you @oxyjvp @oxysjp and @maeve.richards for the thoughtful discussion, art, and photos bc my phone camera is broken. Caption : new record “No Sun” by @nitejewel is incredible, I’m obviously a big fan of all Ramona’s music (and we’ve been friends for years), but this is the wildest work of hers. It’s heartbreaking but also so warm. I love following the melodies as they meander, the intricate arrangements allow for a lot of space, and the powerful vocal expression is captured intimately in the production and you really feel it. I also love the other brilliant contributions to the record—@coreyvogeln @coreyleegranet @jay_is @jakeviator.wav @tnpain @simonallenbrian Was honored to play a little solo in one of the tracks too. final thought is that this record also feels really musically playful, despite all the intensity, and I love that 🔥❤️❤️Likes : 1394

Caption : from a @wawog_now event Jan 18: hundreds of Angelenos gathered for a vigil at Echo Park Lake to mourn and honor the lives of the writers, scholars, journalists, and poets among Gaza’s martyrs. This is an excerpt of Fariha Roisin reading “I Grant You Refuge” by Hiba Abu Nada (32, killed in her home in Khan Younis Oct 20 by Israeli airstrike) Hiba Abu Nada (trans. Huda Fakhreddine) 1. I grant you refuge in invocation and prayer. I bless the neighborhood and the minaret to guard them from the rocket from the moment it is a general’s command until it becomes a raid. I grant you and the little ones refuge, the little ones who change the rocket’s course before it lands with their smiles. 2. I grant you and the little ones refuge, the little ones now asleep like chicks in a nest. They don’t walk in their sleep toward dreams. They know death lurks outside the house. Their mothers’ tears are now doves following them, trailing behind every coffin. 3. I grant the father refuge, the little ones’ father who holds the house upright when it tilts after the bombs. He implores the moment of death: “Have mercy. Spare me a little while. For their sake, I’ve learned to love my life. Grant them a death as beautiful as they are.” 4. I grant you refuge from hurt and death, refuge in the glory of our siege, here in the belly of the whale. Our streets exalt God with every bomb. They pray for the mosques and the houses. And every time the bombing begins in the North, our supplications rise in the South. 5. I grant you refuge from hurt and suffering. With words of sacred scripture I shield the oranges from the sting of phosphorous and the shades of cloud from the smog. I grant you refuge in knowing that the dust will clear, and they who fell in love and died together will one day laugh. A printed manifesto, collectively written by members of WAWOG’s Los Angeles chapter, was distributed to the crowd. Excerpts below: WE ARE 100 DAYS IN AND STILL WE HAVE NOT ACHIEVED A CEASEFIRE. JOURNALISTS, WRITERS, POETS, AND SCHOLARS ARE BEING TARGETED BECAUSE THEY ARE THE KEEPERS OF LIVING HISTORY. WE DEMAND A PERMANENT CEASEFIRE, AN END TO ISRAEL’S SIEGE ON GAZA, AND AN END TO OCCUPATION NOW.Likes : 1139

Caption : late to post but i had been wanting to thank everyone involved in this live score for Joan of Arc with @operanorth, bc it was really a combined effort of so many people. in 2017, i was kindly invited by Felix Salazar at Unsilent Cinema to do a live score to Dreyer’s Passion of Joan of Arc. i asked some of my favorite musicians to work with—@dynamacabre, @coreyvogeln, @devil_hoof, @tashiwada—to perform it with me in downtown LA. so grateful that Jo Nockels heard about this and thought to commission a new live score for Joan of Arc written for the Chorus of @operanorth. she stayed with the idea for 2 years through the pandemic, and i’m lucky she trusted me, with my lack of experience working with a chorus. I was guided along the way by Chorus Master Oliver Rundell, and he had it set so that by the time we arrived in the UK, Opera North already knew the music. i cried when i heard their voices for the first time it was so beautiful lol. for working with chorus, i thought to add a blend of breath and voice –voice through trumpet, breath through bagpipe, voice through contact mic. To have musicians @sarahbellereid, @coreyvogeln, and @tashiwada on this project was really special–they bring the magic. much gratitude to @benjaminwoodgates for his focused help with arrangement for this chorus to set to picture, along with @ashilmistry, who, with Ben, beautified my ugly score very quickly and smoothed things out with copyediting as needed for the standards of Opera North. balancing time code with notation and timing it all out was a big undertaking for me–it was my first time doing hours of basic arithmetic to make a score lol somehow conductor @hughbrunt was able to coordinate this all together in the most beautiful way, and working him was so wonderful. he made it seem easy bc he is really good at what he does, but i am sure it was not haha Thank you to Jamie Saye for his wonderful job with the sound, and for John Haynes who thankfully carefully recorded both concerts Thankful as well for Kathryn Gasic for coordinating everything, and to Dominic Gray as well for all of his supportLikes : 1126

Caption : “Spinning” feels for me like a seeking of the night, where visions present themselves to us from the ether and we are compelled to make stuff. Also an appreciation for Robert Wyatt’s “Sea Song”. Night, darkness, water, swimming But desiring this fruitful state of mind yet sometimes being stuck in the awkward bright day, without vision and with only fatigue from the everyday/external—that can be interesting in of itself! Maybe we can bring the day to the night Thankful always to @kennethjohngilmore working on this whole thing with me @beth_goodfellow —drums, percussion @dev_hoff —fretless bass @juliaholter —voice, Yamaha CS-60, Hammond C3, Prophet 6, drum programming @chrisspeed11 —tenor saxophone @tashiwada —Prophet 6 Hélène Cixous provided the song’s inspiration (“Writing Blind”): “the night vibrates, I see with my ears, I advance into the bosom of the world, hands in front, capturing the music with my palms, until something breathes under the pen’s beak. (I’ve just written these lines eyelids closed as usual, because the day and its huge light keeps us from seeing what is germinating.)” @giraffestudios instantly got all of this vibe and sent over brilliant and inspired ideas and somehow found this parachute that many of us recall from our childhood running around under, and which is delightfully heavy to try to crawl in. Caption : This coming Monday, March 15, @weareumaw is holding socially-distant demonstrations outside Spotify offices internationally to deliver our demands to Spotify. Spotify is consistently devaluing music with its practices, and this is affecting all musicians. Covid has left most musicians who make music for a living out of work, as gigs are their main source of income, and yet, since Covid, Spotify has tripled in valuation to around $60 billion. Streaming is 85% of all recorded music income these days, and most of that streaming money is not going to most of the musicians whose music is being streamed, and Spotify dominates the streaming world, in part because of its practices which may be considered to be a kind of predatory pricing. It is urgent we continue to bring our demands to Spotify and to build awareness to the public about its practices. I have been very lucky as a musician, but I’m worried about the future of creative music, and especially worried for musicians just starting out now. It doesn’t have to be this way, and there has to be a change. Please join us wherever your local action is and see you at the LA one which will be from 1pm-2pm . Caption : Alex Temple’s “Behind the Wallpaper” is out now, performed by @spektralquartet and me. Her writing here is so beautiful and the arrangement so idiomatic for the strings and my voice (have never had someone write so meticulously for my voice). These songs always move me very much to sing and I know they will move listeners. Alex was writing this piece while going through a gender transition, and, while the songs live in a wild space far beyond autobiographical experience, her poetic exploration of feelings of otherness and surreality will resonate with so many. I’m excited for the opportunity for more people to experience this important and timeless work. Posted @withregram • @spektralquartet BEHIND THE WALLPAPER IS OUT!!! We are immensely grateful for Alex, Julia, Bill, Zach, Greg, Cat, Sandy, Natalie, for the incredibly generous donors and supporters of our campaign, and for all of our stalwart listeners and fellow music weirdos💜 This is music we believe deserves to be out in the world and that we hope many people will find connection with. I had so much fun singing and playing on this gorgeous wild record, it sounds like nothing else I’ve known. for years, I’ve been inspired by Tashi’s harmony-exploring with tuning and glissandi. This record incorporates that but feels like a new direction and deeply soulful. I’ve never seen him practice keyboard so much as for this music—for months, I would find him playing scales and runs over and over, absorbing himself in the meantone tuning the songs were in. It was a joy to be a part of this recording, alongside Tashi and longtime collaborators like @coreyvogeln and @thee_bass_witch and to get to work newly with musician friends I admire like @catfact and @chrifcohen The details of Tashi’s writing and the fantastic performances show themselves distinctly in the recording of @chrifcohen and the mixing and mastering by @studioschwebung who did a beautiful job illuminating each sound so that things come through as they are, without over-production but still glistening and surreal. Thank you to the great @rvngintl for the thoughtful work releasing this record. the new video for “Grand Trine”, by the one and only @dicky_bahto feels to me like a warm embrace, a celebration of love and making stuff. Congratulations Tashi! I’m excited for the world to finally hear this. Photos by @dicky_bahtoLikes : 1003

Caption : in November, I’m excited (after years of delay due to Covid) to premiere a new live score for the classic Dreyer film “The Passion of Joan of Arc”, written for the Chorus of @operanorth featuring special guests @sarahbellereid, @tashiwada and @coreyvogeln 2 UK shows (link in bio for tickets): Nov 23 Huddersfield Music Festival @hcmfuk Nov 25 London @barbicancentre I always love to be at the Barbican, and I’ve heard nice things about Huddersfield Music Festival for years so excited to experience it finally 🐉🍄🐉 a little about the music: In making music to accompany this incredible film, there is so much beauty and space given to the composer and yet I was hoping not to take advantage of that space too much; I wanted to keep the mystery. I was inspired by an essay by Anne Carson called “Variations on the Right to Remain Silent”, in which she explores the untranslatability of the sublime—how, throughout Joan’s trial, the judges are trying to forcibly extricate some kind of material from Joan to manipulate into their narrative, while Joan stays true to the inexplicability of her spiritual experience with vague statements like, as Carson highlights, “The light comes in the name of the voice”. The live score began centered on my voice through a contact mic on my throat, the words rendered unintelligible, retaining the pitch yet tongue-less. But suddenly I had an entire opera chorus (Chorus of Opera North) to work with, so I had to figure out a way to bring out that ‘sublime unintelligibility’ with a group of operatic voices as well. Alongside some notable quotes of Joan’s from the film to set to music, I also wanted to set and adapt a couple of medieval chants relevant to Joan’s story and/or time (“Te Deum” and “Ave Maris Stella”), and so throughout we hear these chants in various forms—sometimes only as very long stretched-out and isolated syllables decapitated from their word context, and sometimes sung more conventionally. Looking forward to performing this thing which I don’t know how it will turn out but I’m pretty sure it will be wild and weird! Very grateful for Opera North Chorus for this opportunity 🪐🪐🪐Likes : 898

Caption : Excited to announce the first vinyl pressing (and first physical format) of my score for Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always”, a masterpiece of a film. Release is out July 12 on @realgonemusic —pre-order now (link in bio). Whether or not I had been involved with this project, I would say it is one of the most important films to have come out in a long time, and every aspect of it is beautifully made. A teenager’s quest for an abortion is full of insane obstacles and the story is told with such depth and sensitivity. Hittman’s writing and direction is incredible —she gets at the nuance of each emotion and at every detail—and the performances by Sidney Flanigan and Talia Ryder are devastating. Also was honored to be a part of this project alongside @sharonvanhalen ‘s moving performance. This film is quiet and intricate, and so the score is not a bombastic, high-energy sonic rollercoaster—it’s more an underlining of all the complex emotions. I tried to harmonize with the bus sounds, to tune to the film’s environment, trying to consider each subtle movement. It was a wonderful journey to be a part of this and happy @realgonemusic is releasing this on vinyl for more to hear. Thank you so much to these exceptional musicians who made the score happen: Julia Holter: Synth, Piano, Vocals, additional Cello Christin Hablewitz: B Flat and Bass Clarinet Christopher Votek: Cello Sharon Cheslow: Electronics Kenny Gilmore: Mixing David Ives: Mastering @christinhablewitz @chrisvotek @kennethjohngilmore @realgonemusic @neverrarelyfilmLikes : 702
