Katie Carpenter Instagram - 4 months. That’s how long it’s taken for me to feel like I can start putting myself back together.

To think about my own body instead of only my daughters.

I mourn the sight of the extra chin I didn’t used to have. The half a closet full of clothes that don’t fit. I’ve lived in athleisure the past few months. Sometimes I still wear my maternity leggings and pants (like now).

People said it would be hard. That was true. People said “breastfeeding helps.” That was a lie. At least for me.

I don’t pluck my eyebrows. I forget to whiten my teeth. And every time I open my phone or turn on the TV, I’m reminded of the sets I used to act on, and the beautiful people who are on screen. It feels so foreign.

I used to have time. Now, the days go by so fast and before I know it, we’re putting the baby to bed and I better go to bed too because who knows what kind of night I’ll have and if I don’t get a few hours of sleep, I’ll be exhausted and useless tomorrow, and then the cycle continues.

I’m sorry to the mamas who felt this too. I didn’t know. How heartbreaking it can be to love your baby and your new life but mourn the old you. To focus on your little one out of love and joy but also because it’s too upsetting to focus on yourself.

I know I’ll rebuild my body and confidence. It’ll take time.

I’m honored I was able to carry and birth and now raise this baby.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t hard.
Just feeling really low today. #pp #postpartumjourney #newmom #postpartum #fourthtrimester
Katie Carpenter Instagram - 39 week pregnancy fit 🧦

We are surviving and occasionally thriving. 🥴🤗

Pregnancy has been a lot of what I thought but a lot of what I didn’t expect. Symptoms I didn’t know about, the intense MENTAL game, feeling simultaneously excited and a little terrified about what’s gonna happen any day now and feeling the heaviness joy of our lives changing forever. 🤞🏻

💛 I tend to get a burst of energy in the morning and then feel pretty wiped
💛 Baby feels lowwwww
💛 Braxton hicks and inconsistent cramping have been happening
💛 Sleep was great from week 32-38; it’s been hit or miss since
💛 Feeling like this cycle of eating, sleeping, PEEING, and waiting is getting old, but trying to remember it won’t last forever.

Overall, we’re just so excited she’ll be here soon. I’ve known about this pregnancy for far too long (literally about 3 weeks into this), so it’s felt like a whiiiiile. 😰

We don’t plan on telling people when I go into labor. Being a chronic people-pleaser, I worry that if we tell people, they’ll in turn be worried about me and I’ll “feel” that pressure!! 😅

If you think of us, just send us the good vibes and prayers! We’re lucky to have such a sweet community of family and friends and all those positive intentions are definitely felt. ❤️

Love y’all! Let’s do thisssss (maybe tonight or like in a few weeks)
(but really this week)

Katie Carpenter Instagram - Baby in bloom 🌻

Thanks to my mama @nancycarpenter27, my sister @alexiscarpenter, and my aunt Patty for making this a special day! 💗 they hand painted all the decor and had a ton of fresh flowers. 🌼 It was intimate and beautiful.

Things are feeling more and more real. And one of the coolest parts is both my mom and my sister got to feel the baby kick!!

I was hoping the stars would somehow align but we don’t live close so I didn’t know if it would be possible. Baby showed up for them. 👶🏼

Can’t wait to introduce her in a few months!

And yes - dress #2 won!! Thanks for all your feedback. 🤗

Katie Carpenter Instagram - Birth story, part 7.

I just groaned “no!” I didn’t want my sweet girl to be pulled out with a vacuum. I was lost.

But then I remembered: We had a daughter coming soon. It was up to me to get her here. I pushed.

It had been 34 hours since my water broke. I’d been actively contracting for 21 hours. I couldn’t remember life before discomfort.

And then all of the sudden - she was here. No head then body, just all at once, here was our baby. She was crying and looking around with her big eyes. I was in shock it was finally over.

Then we learned why things were so hard. Her cord was incredibly short. We couldn’t get her above my belly button. My placenta was high so poor girl had a hard time getting down on her little bungee cord.

Kevin cut the cord after it stopped pulsing, and I brought this little stranger to my chest. She was so alert. REALLY cute. I couldn’t believe she was ours.

My placenta came out a few minutes later. Poor Kevin looked down at just the right time. 😆

Our little girl nursed right away. The adventure continued as I had a 2nd degree tear which required stitches. But - I had our baby in my arms. Finally!!

Despite this not being the plan, despite an incredible amount of pain and interventions that we didn’t expect, I didn’t feel that I had a “bad birth.” I’m so thankful we switched to a hospital birth in advance so I had time to mourn and adjust. I’m thankful we were able to get help when interventions were needed.

And despite every new challenge, I’m thankful that all of our decisions felt like a collaboration rather than made for us. We were respected, something that I worried about after hearing hospital horror stories, and so well taken care of.

After researching short umbilical cords, I found they double the chances of complications and more often, lead to c-sections. We ended up being where we needed to be with the right team to get this girl safely here.

I am grateful for our doulas, Courtney & Lauren, the midwives, and the labor and delivery staff at North Fulton hospital for taking care of us.

Labor was another lesson. Make plans, but be open to whatever the universe brings. Thanks for following along ❤️

Katie Carpenter Instagram - You’re 4 weeks old today.

We’re adapting to little sleep. We’re getting more confident at diagnosing what your cries mean. Our pets know you’re their new roomie and check in on you. We’re discovering what it means to be parents.

And each day, our love grows.. as we look at your sweet face, and hear you grunt and coo.

These last few weeks have flown by in a time warp full of poopy diapers and spit up and awe.

Still can’t believe she’s here. Kinda can’t believe we’re doing this. But we are. ❤️

Katie Carpenter Instagram - Breastfeeding is not as easy as I thought.

‘You just whip your boob out, right?’ 😝

But it’s more complex.

Finding comfy positions for both of us 8 times a day. Wondering if I’m dehydrated as I feel liquid being sucked out of me. Trying to remember how much protein I ate today. Wanting to wear that dress but I can’t, because I can’t feed her in that. Feeling people’s eyes on me as I feed her in public. Feeling people AVOID looking at me when I’m feeding her. Wondering HOW somehow she’s able to bite with no teeth???! 🫣

Worried about my supply dipping, especially around my cycle. Wanting to make plans but knowing I can’t be gone for too long, cause I gotta pump.

Feeling the responsibility and pride of being able to feed and comfort her at the same time.

Seeing her eyes look up at me and knowing how close we are in that moment.

And the overwhelming urge to quit sometimes because it would be seemingly easier, but knowing once I’m done, I can’t go back.

But now we’re arriving at the first mini-goal. 6 months. 6 months of nothing but boob juice. And I feel almost a little selfish that I’m excited for her to start food, but resentful. How will I know whether that new lock of hair was because of me or a sweet potato?

Am I wrong to feel this way?

I grew her. She was built in my tummy and from my body. Just me. A blessing and a sacrifice.

This is motherhood, isn’t it? The heartbreaking happiness of growth. 🥹 We’re still pretty fresh to all this, but what a journey it’s been.

I hope to keep going. A year? We’ll see.

Shoutout to all the mamas who chose to/were able to do this for their babies. 🫶🏻 We are life-bringers, caretakers, and warriors. #breastfeedingmom #breastfedbaby #ftm

Katie Carpenter Instagram - we had a lovely picnic featuring my fave @hellyeahglutenfree treats 🍩 and FaceTiming with our mamas!

Ryder came along too and isn’t 75 degrees the most PERFECT weather??!

Katie Carpenter Instagram - Our little angel was in her first commercial today! 💕 She handled it like a champ.

Honestly, we were probably more stressed out because we wanted it to go smoothly for everyone. 🫣

The production seemed happy and we’re stoked that Cora herself will make the first contribution to an account that will hopefully set her up for a very bright future. ☺️
Katie Carpenter Instagram - 6 months 🍩 1/2way to one! ✨I thought this day was always so far away, but now here we are (3 days late lol).

Our baby girl is the best little cutie pie and brings so much joy to our lives.

She loves:
🍩 people (She’s never met a stranger)! 🥰
🍩 tummy sleeping 😴
🍩 watching her furry brothers and sister 🐶🐾
🍩 lights & fans! 💡
🍩 peas 🫛
🍩 grabbing our arms during diaper changes, pulling it to her mouth, and giggling when we pull it back 😂
🍩 kicking her chunky little legs 🥖

Cannot believe she’s been in our lives for half a year. It’s been so incredible seeing her grow and change!! 🫶🏻

Katie Carpenter Instagram - In January, we made plans to travel back to Kevin’s hometown in New York so his grandpa could meet Cora. In his 90’s, we knew his time could be limited and it was important to us that he met his newest great granddaughter.

Our trip was this weekend, but we didn’t make it in time to meet his grandpa.

The whole family feels this loss, as he was such a vibrant light. He left a long legacy of accomplishments behind and a large, beautiful family.

I always felt welcome when he was around. He made sure to always ask how I was doing, and genuinely cared about the answer.

When we FaceTimed with him two weeks ago, he asked us if we needed anything for the baby, because “babies need things.” He insisted on sending us a check, and I told him if he did, then we’d buy a baby carrier for the airport when we came to see him.

We’re still going up to New York this weekend, but to send him home. Rest in peace, Grandpa Eade. 🤍

Katie Carpenter Instagram - happy mother’s day 🤍

Two years ago, 🥹 I wondered if this day would come.

One year ago, we found out we were having a little girl. 💕

I feel so lucky that you’re here. Honored I’m your mama, and respect for all those who have come before me. 🙌🏼
Katie Carpenter Instagram - I’m not going to lie to you, I didn’t feel a strong connection with my baby when she was first born. My first thoughts were, “oh thank God that’s over.” And, “well at least she’s cute.”

I think they say fathers take time to connect with their babies. After all, I carried and grew her for 9 months. I felt her kicks and wiggles. But.. to me, she was still a stranger.

I remember telling Kevin about a month after she was born that, ‘I thought I loved her.. but I still loved him more.’

He said he loved the baby more 😂

I was tired. And as simple as I naively assumed breastfeeding was, it’s not always the case. It can be physically and emotionally draining, and a lot of pressure to be the only food source and sometimes comfort for this little innocent being.

I began thinking something may be wrong with me.

But then she smiled.
Suddenly she seemed like a PERSON.

My love for her has grown. Every time she does something new, I’m so proud, so entranced that we managed to create such a perfect baby.

All to say: I know people love to show the perfect moments, and not the tough ones.

This is tough. It’s also beautiful. And life is both.

Katie Carpenter Instagram - we’re ready for you, baby girl 🌻

Getting teary eyed looking at this room and knowing how close we are to meeting her. 🥹

I spent a few hours working on a blog with all the steps links but it didn’t save. Another thing that made me cry today. 😭

Feeling extra hormonal over here, but also extra love for the work and time that we family/friends put into this space. 💛 It’s just magical.

Katie Carpenter Instagram - Traveling w/ a baby ✈️ - we made it! Flying used to be exciting with a hint of stress. Those quantities reversed this time 😅

There were some challenging moments. Wanted to share some tips of how we survived!

✈️ Bring the stroller through the airport. Everyone told me to babywear (we did that too), but the stroller is sooo nice for transporting the car seat and stroller bags. (We got cheap ones on Amazon!) You can also bring extra stuff in the bags. We brought a blanket, diapers, and wipes. Although - not over 4oz cause we got some butt paste confiscated. 🫣
🍼 Let TSA know you have breast milk and if you want it personally inspected vs being x-rayed. I got to watch people uncomfortably walking around with my fluids and asking co-workers what to do with them 🤣 in ATL, they tested it in what I fondly call a ‘bomb detector box’ and in Buffalo, TSA opened it and held a strip over the bottle.
🧸 Bring multiple pacis and toys. At 3.5 months, we brought some teething toys and crinkly books. We also downloaded an episode of Miss Rachel in case we were desperate! It’s nice to bring out more distractions if you need it.
💺 Choose a window seat if you’re BFing for more privacy. Wayyy easier to whip out a boob and also nice for the extra inches of space.
🎒Use a roll up diaper pad for all your diaper changes. Ours has pockets so I tucked in travel wipes, diaper cream, and some chux pads, which are great if you want something disposable to lay down. It’s way easier having it all in one pack than digging through a bag in a tiny bathroom.
🤍 Bring a travel sound machine if your baby is used to white noise. We loooove our Hatch. She was getting fussy on the plane cause she was tired. We cranked the Hatch up and bum-patted like our lives depended on it. The sound machine helped. I managed to hang it on a headphone jack! 🤣
🫶🏻 People are nicer than you think. It’s stressful to have a fussy baby in public, but people were kind to us. Both our seat mates told us before takeoff they loved/had babies of their own and not to worry. 🥹

I’m gonna link some fave products in my stories!

Katie Carpenter Instagram - I did a scary thing and did a swimsuit try on 🫣👙

I’m 6 months PP and still quite far from feeling/looking like my pre-prego self, but it’s summertime and there are pools and beaches to explore with my little girl and mama needs a suit!! ☀️

I got all of these from Amazon and they were under $40! Showing off my top 5 here and the rest are in my stories.

Baby MAY make an appearance 😆

And please be kind.. ♥️ I’ve heard mamas talk about pregnancy and birth and the first few months with sleep deprivation/exhaustion/breastfeeding and how hard it is on their bodies and I’m fully living in that world as a first time mom! Once again, humbled by motherhood. 🙏🏼

I would love it if all brands had different size models so you could see how the product would look on you before buying 😅 But if you have a curvy bod similar to mine and would like to get in water this summer, hopefully this is helpful!

Time has sped up and slowed down all at once. Looking back at photos, you already look so different. You were a little stranger!

💛 You like to wake up from naps smiling. ☺️
💛 When you REALLY smile with a wide open mouth and shiny eyes, mom calls it ✨“sparkling.”✨
💛 You’ve gotten so many dog kisses from Ryder that you’re practically used to it. 🐾
💛 You love meeting new friends and any outside time. 🍃
💛 Blowing bubbles is your current favorite pastime, along with exploring your voice! 🫧
💛 You’ve gotten really good putting yourself to sleep for naps. 💤
💛 You’ve started to grabbing with those tiny little fists! 👶🏼
💛 Tummy time has gotten easier and you LOVE staring at the singing owl Nana Nancy gave you. 🦉

We’re so lucky to have our little angel baby. 💛

Katie Carpenter Instagram - The grandparents the grandchildren (and me, lol!!) 🥰

I love that first photo. Spending time surrounded by my giggling, playing and screaming nieces and nephews made me so excited for what’s to come.

My mother-in-law and sisters-in-law did an amazing job planning our “Parents to Bee” shower up in Olean, NY. 🐝 Loved the personal touch of the childhood photos of Kevin and I! It was also a family reunion so we got to see a ton of family and Kevin’s parents’ friends (who are basically family!)

We parked the RV on Kevin’s grandpa’s lot overlooking the tiny city, which is one of the best views you can get.

One of my favorite memories was when we told my 3 year-old nephew, Bear, that I was going to have a baby. He said “I don’t know where your baby is.” I said, “it’s right here, in my tummy. See how round it is?” And he said, “no you’re just full.” Kids!!! 😆

We’re feeling very blessed to be showered by both of our families as we prep for our journey into parenthood. 🤗

We’re feeling very blessed to be showered by both of our families as we prep for our journey into parenthood. 🤗

Katie Carpenter Instagram - Birth story, part 1.

As many of you know, it took a while for us to get pregnant. When we finally did, we were over the moon! There were many lessons involved - lessons in nutrition, lifestyle adjustments, & emotional lessons of letting go.

When I imagined birth, I imagined it to be peaceful. I wanted to give our girl the gift of a calm entry into this world. I’d also never been comfy in hospital settings and we’d heard about traumatic hospital births. So - we hired a midwife and started planning a homebirth.

At the time, I wasn’t worried about pain. I wanted to do it unmedicated, to prove I could. To be like our ancestors, squatting in a field 😅 In my mind, if I could do that, I could do anything.

I was blessed with a normal pregnancy. A low-risk pregnancy is required for homebirth. Although midwives are highly trained, there are scenarios they don’t have the resources for.

We also had backup care at a hospital midwife group. I did my labs through them. If anything risked me out, they would have my records.

We bought a birth kit. We had a home visit. And then things started to shift.

At 32 weeks, I got a high blood pressure reading at the midwives’ office. It went down, but they were concerned. I told them I was just nervous and my BP readings had been excellent at home. Still, I agreed to let them run a preeclampsia panel. It was fine.

But then… I saw my BP rise at home. I felt desperate. So I followed the Brewer Diet. It requires you to eat a ton. I worried about food all the time. But within a few days, my BP was normal.

However, tensions were high with our homebirth midwife. The way things were communicated were often worded like threats. And at our last visit, she inferred she’d most likely send us to the hospital in labor.

I left my 38w apmnt devastated. I knew I wouldn’t get my “peaceful homebirth.” I spent the day crying.

That night, we made a choice. To cut ties with our homebirth midwife and willingly choose a hospital birth.

I knew this was the right call, although it didn’t make it easier. To let go of something you’ve been planning for 9 months is hard. But just like getting pregnant was a lesson, so was this… “Let go.”

Katie Carpenter Instagram - 8 months (a day late!) 💖

Baby Cora has developed quite the personality lately.

- she chats all the time
- LOVES cheese more than life 🧀
- Enjoys sticking her tongue out
- will show off her rolling outside of the crib, but only on the couch 😅
- Blows raspberries any chance she can get
- Is eating 3 meals a day
- can really put some dairy down and protests if we don’t serve her any
- Kicking her legs in swim class more and more

It’s so wild to see her preferences starting already! I remember when she was just a sleepy little lump, and now she’s closer to one year old than ever. It really does move fast!

Katie Carpenter - 249 Likes - 4 months.

Things are feeling more and more real. And one of the coolest parts is both my mom and my sister got to feel the baby kick!! I was hoping the stars would somehow align but we don’t live close so I didn’t know if it would be possible. Baby showed up for them. 👶🏼 Can’t wait to introduce her in a few months! And yes – dress #2 won!! Thanks for all your feedback. 🤗

Katie Carpenter - 149 Likes - Birth story, part 7.

And each day, our love grows.. as we look at your sweet face, and hear you grunt and coo.

These last few weeks have flown by in a time warp full of poopy diapers and spit up and awe.

Still can’t believe she’s here. Kinda can’t believe we’re doing this. But we are. ❤️

Katie Carpenter - 140 Likes - Breastfeeding is not as easy as I thought.

Katie Carpenter - 134 Likes - we had a lovely picnic featuring my fave @hellyeahglutenfree treats 🍩 and FaceTiming with our mamas!

Ryder came along too and isn’t 75 degrees the most PERFECT weather??!

Cora is wearing a vintage dress made by my late grandma that I think I wore as a babe.

And Kevin has been so sweet, he got me this beautiful birth stone necklace and printed out a poem that made me cry 🥹 (that we already spilled water on) 😂

Katie Carpenter - 126 Likes - Our little angel was in her first commercial today! 💕 She handled it like a champ.

Honestly, we were probably more stressed out because we wanted it to go smoothly for everyone. 🫣

The production seemed happy and we’re stoked that Cora herself will make the first contribution to an account that will hopefully set her up for a very bright future. ☺️

Katie Carpenter - 114 Likes - 6 months 🍩 1/2way to one!

Katie Carpenter - 114 Likes - In January, we made plans to travel back to Kevin’s hometown in New York so his grandpa could meet Cora.

Katie Carpenter - 113 Likes - I’m not going to lie to you, I didn’t feel a strong connection with my baby when she was first born.

Katie Carpenter - 104 Likes - we’re ready for you, baby girl 🌻

Getting teary eyed looking at this room and knowing how close we are to meeting her. 🥹

I spent a few hours working on a blog with all the steps links but it didn’t save. Another thing that made me cry today. 😭

Feeling extra hormonal over here, but also extra love for the work and time that we family/friends put into this space. 💛 It’s just magical.

Katie Carpenter - 92 Likes - Traveling w/ a baby ✈️ - we made it!

Katie Carpenter - 91 Likes - I did a scary thing and did a swimsuit try on 🫣👙

Katie Carpenter - 87 Likes - 3 months. 💖

Time has sped up and slowed down all at once. Looking back at photos, you already look so different. You were a little stranger!

And now everyday, we get to know you even more.

Katie Carpenter - 83 Likes - Birth story, part 1.

Caption : Birth story, part 1. As many of you know, it took a while for us to get pregnant. When we finally did, we were over the moon! There were many lessons involved – lessons in nutrition, lifestyle adjustments, & emotional lessons of letting go. When I imagined birth, I imagined it to be peaceful. I wanted to give our girl the gift of a calm entry into this world. I’d also never been comfy in hospital settings and we’d heard about traumatic hospital births. So – we hired a midwife and started planning a homebirth.
