This work is part of a series that Kehinde Wiley developed while in quarantine at @blackrocksenegal the artist compound and residency program he founded in 2019 on the coast of Dakar. Unable to find models with his typical street casting process due to COVID-19, Wiley turned to those immediately surrounding him. As the artist describes, "What follows are a series of portraits that I might consider friends and family of Black Rock."

Kehinde Wiley Instagram - A Maze of Power, featuring a series of portraits of African heads of state that I began working on in 2012. I designed these portraits to reflect the distinctive cultural elements of each State, thus highlighting the immense diversity of the African continent, and reveal the identity of each individual through the double prism of the artist and the model.

The compositions allude to military portraiture of Britain and France during the periods in which African colonization was rampant. The history of power in Western Europe and the history of painting are so closely tied. Using this vocabulary of power, a conversation opened up around the history of portraiture in Western Europe and then turned more specifically to each head of State and how they want to be represented. I wanted to place Blackness and Africa at the intersection of this question about the interrogation of power in picture making.

These paintings lay bare the contours of the ego, the diversity of possibilities in terms of taste and discernment, as well as the different communication strategies related to the construction of an image, both personal and public.

Kehinde Wiley Instagram - My solo exhibition HAVANA opens tomorrow at Sean Kelly, New York! There will be an opening reception on Thursday, April 27 from 6-8pm.

The exhibition features new paintings, works on paper, and a three-channel film, all inspired by my focus on the evolution of Black culture globally. The body of work explores the phenomenon of the carnivalesque in Western culture, referencing artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Calder, and Western European depictions of the carnivalesque, the circus, and the power of street performance and dance.

The artworks in the exhibition create a timeline in which political realities, economic hardship, artistic freedom, and the thirst for self-discovery become the catalyst for exploring a nation and culture through painting. The film, installed in the lower gallery, features interviews and performances by members of Races Profundas, giving insight into the journey through time of Cuba's rich cultural history. Through this exhibition, I seek to amplify Afro-Caribbean survival strategies and celebrates the youth, vibrancy, and broader evolution of Black culture. #kehindewiley @seankellygallery

Kehinde Wiley Instagram - Now on view at the National Gallery of London (@nationalgallery) American artist Kehindewiley explores the artistic conventions and canons of the Western landscape tradition in his new exhibition, 'Kehinde Wiley at the National Gallery: The Prelude'.

Wiley’s images – as part quotation, part intervention – raise questions about power, privilege, identity, and above all highlight the absence or marginalization of Black figures within European art.

Situated in the Sunley Room, at the centre of the collection, this free exhibition draws out the dynamic relationship between Wiley's transcendental works and the National Gallery's historical landscapes and seascapes by artists such as Claude, Friedrich, Turner and Vernet.

Prelude (Babacar Mané), based on Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, takes its title from the William Wordsworth poem, "The Prelude". This work, along with Prelude (Ibrahima Ndiaye and El Hadji Malick Gueye), are Kehinde Wiley's first paintings referencing the works of Friedrich. Friedrich's original painting is reworked to feature a black man from Dakar, continuing Wiley's tradition of incorporating black figures into the canon of Western portraiture.
Kehinde Wiley Instagram - My latest exhibition, Colorful Realm, opens Saturday, January 21 at Roberts Projects (@robertsprojects) in LA.

This body of work echoes the traditional techniques and materials found in Japanese nature paintings of the Edo period (c. 1600–1868). So much of my work is about appearance, showing up and being visible and this dance between exploring the vastness of space within the minimality of this technique I find to be an interesting juxtaposition. Pictured here, Portrait of John Adewumi

Kehinde Wiley Instagram - @americanexpress reveals collaboration with architect @rem.koolhaas, artist @kehindewiley and luxury fashion house @prada to bring a touch of artistic inspiration and innovation to its iconic Centurion Card.

The Kehinde Wiley designed card draws inspiration from the botanical motif in the artist’s portrait Princess Victoire of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (2012), one of the twelve paintings that make up the artist’s iconic series “An Economy of Grace.” Wiley is well-known for his vibrant reinterpretations of classical portraits that celebrate people the artist has met throughout the world.

Wiley explains, “So much of my work is about what is behind the figure- you see this in the decorative, organic backgrounds of my paintings. The same way I elevate the narrative of my subjects, I want to create something much more vaunted for a decorative art form that appears in wallpapers, laces and filigrees. My design on the Amex Centurion Card stems from my interest in botanical elements and is a nod to my signature style.”

Kehinde Wiley - 46.2K Likes - A Maze of Power, featuring a series of portraits of African heads of state that I began working on in 2012.

Kehinde Wiley - 38.8K Likes - My solo exhibition HAVANA opens tomorrow at Sean Kelly, New York!

Artist Kehinde Wiley’s site-specific stained-glass installation restages the grandeur of 18th century European ceiling frescoes. Working through the modern Black body, the artist reimagines breakdance at the intersection of the epic and the intimate to offer a nuanced perspective on art history and the broader evolution of culture.

On view beginning January 1, 2021 at Moynihan Train Hall 33rd Street Midblock Entrance Hall, New York.

Kehinde Wiley - 34.1K Likes - Now on view at the National Gallery of London (@nationalgallery) American artist Kehindewiley explores the artistic conventions and canons of the Western landscape tradition in his new exhibition, 'Kehinde Wiley at the National Gallery: The Prelude'.

Kehinde Wiley - 27.6K Likes - @americanexpress reveals collaboration with architect @rem.koolhaas, artist @kehindewiley and luxury fashion house @prada to bring a touch of artistic inspiration and innovation to its iconic Centurion Card.

Kehinde Wiley - 24.2K Likes - My latest exhibition, Colorful Realm, opens Saturday, January 21 at Roberts Projects (@robertsprojects) in LA.
