Caption : It was an absolute pleasure to return to West Dean College earlier this Summer and film in the beautiful grounds with Markus Dell. I was keen to highlight the the work that goes on at the college offering world class conservation courses in a unique and supportive learning environment. It’s thirty years since I was a student here but during my two year training I made lifelong friends and connections. When I was asked to appear on the BBC programme The Repair Shop as a Ceramics Conservator seven years ago, I said yes because I knew it was filmed right next to my old college and I still have strong connections with this place. If you are interested in a career in conservation then there are many different disciplines to choose from, ceramics just being one. West Dean College offer’s you a foundation to start your career from. This Venetian millefiori glass lamp was a beautiful combination of both but it arrived at The Repair Shop in dreadful condition, just about holding together with old tape and failing adhesives. I could immediately see its potential and recognise what a beautiful object it had been. It was much loved and still in daily use despite its precarious condition. This was a wonderful challenge and tested my glass conservation skills. The glass was dismantled, cleaned and reassembled and once put back together was stable and safe to use, hopefully for many more years to come. Caption : I’m guessing that this glamorous German horse rider has just swept in from a ride in the Bavarian Forests … A much loved, broken family heirloom has come into the studio to be repaired. This piece has a small vase/pocket at the rear into which tapers and spills could be placed, these were used for transferring fire to light a candle or pipe. Usually kept on a mantelpiece, Spill vases come in all sorts of shapes and designs. Damaged many years ago it has been treasured even in its broken condition. Caption : Emerging through the steam, this beautiful Dresden parrot. Taking advantage of a break in the rain I decided clean some studio objects in the early morning light. Caption : A masterpiece restored, an artist’s legacy revived. This exquisite etched glass artwork by John Hutton stands as a testament to his skill and vision. With its intricate details and timeless beauty, it captivates the senses. Hutton 1906 – 1978, best known for his post war work at Coventry Cathedral “Screen of Saints and Angels”, 66 larger-than-life figures that took ten years to create and is well worth a visit, leaves a lasting impression through his art. This glass panel, once broken in two, now restored, reminds us of the power of restoration and resilience. Our Conservation studio was lucky enough to be asked to work on this piece after the owner decided to have the old DIY repair dismantled and professionally conserved. Caption : Lovely to see John and his ceramic German Shepherd dog, Belka. This project proved tricky to dismantle, the dog was made of a glazed earthenware and as such a soft body with a glassy, glazed finish that would have been easy to chip. With patience and past experience to call upon, the previous repair eventually came apart, allowing me to move forward and complete the restoration. Caption : Occasionally we have to get creative working out the best ways to support objects during the conservation process. This beautiful painted plaster maquette of an ice dancer from the 1930’s had extensive damage across the supporting leg and signs of previous restoration. H 45 cm Using a custom adjustable frame, made for us by @david_burville_burvilleorgans and old clock weights the object was safely encased during treatment. Caption : In the studio today, this large terracotta head of David with lovely patina. Broken into several pieces the damaged sections were bonded back together after cleaning and consolidation. Due to the size and weight of this piece it required support whilst curing, so using soft, strong but stretchy materials we chose bandages and tights. David has probably looked better! …. Caption : It’s a huge privilege helping people through our work on The Repair Shop and tonight’s episode is no exception. The weight of responsibility with baby David’s footprints was unbelievable. His parents visited the barn bringing his precious footprints and asking for our help. Cast in a synthetic, air drying clay and for no obvious reason they were breaking apart. This precious memento needed to be saved but every unique mark had to be preserved requiring extreme care to be taken. The synthetic clay was stabilised and the intrusive cracks filled and smoothed. This image shows the care and trust involved in getting those incredible shots capturing our process. Working in collaboration, we are able to show how we achieve the repairs and restorations. It can be tricky with some techniques having to be captured first time round due to the types of adhesives or retouching materials being used, but everything you see is real! On today’s program I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Jane a wonderfully talented potter. Caption : This beautiful Chinese vase arrived in The Repair Shop with a long history. Having been made into a lamp base many years before, it had sat alongside Kate’s Dad’s chair throughout her childhood, until an unfortunate accident with a skipping rope smashed it into pieces. The lamp was repaired and after the death of her father it served as a reminder of happy times. Kate kindly entrusted me to take the old restoration apart and to try and give the lamp a new lease of life. This was such a beautiful piece to work on, not just the blue and white decoration but the feel of the glaze on the surface was a pleasure to handle, a testament to the quality of the original maker. The vase responded well to treatment and I was able to dismantle the old repair and clean away the previous adhesive and fill material with good results. The finished piece was bonded using conservation grade adhesive a colour fill technique and a small amount of retouching. There is s real satisfaction in knowing that this vase can now be used and enjoyed for many more years to come. Caption : This salt glazed urn arrived in a dreadful condition having been damaged 25 years ago. It languished in a cellar until it was rediscovered by Adam after the death of his father, John. Each of the three elements had damage and there were signs of extensive previous restoration alongside the damage that occurred when a wall collapsed onto it. The urn, one of a pair, held many happy memories of childhood visits for Adam, visiting Grandparents near Sheffield. After extensive conservation, it can now once again be enjoyed and used by the family. The story of this Urn and many others items feature in a new book, The Repair Shop, life in the barn. The book also tells the backgrounds to many of the experts featured in the program and how they came to work in their chosen fields. Caption : Sunday lunch? …. A recently restored dish in the distinctive style of Palissy ware. A 19th century term for ceramics produced in the style of the famous French potter Bernard Palissy 1510 – 1590 and much imitated in his own lifetime and especially in the 19th Century. This distinctive style is often characterised by three dimensional modelled snakes, fish, lizards, snails and aquatic life and can be a fun challenge to work on. Caption : I am constantly blown away by the beauty of colour, it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with ceramics. This week on my workbench whilst trying to find the right blue for colour matching I found myself looking into this jar of Phthalocyanine (Mona) Blue. Copper Phthalocyanine has been used since the 1930’s and it’s a synthetic organic pigment. Caption : Recently I came across this old photo taken at Uppark House in 1989, right at the beginning of my conservation career. This National Trust House, set high on the South Downs was devastated by fire in August 1989, after a workman’s blowtorch set fire to the roof as lead work was being repaired, only two days before the work was due to be completed. Many of the paintings and furniture were saved but lots was lost to the fire and much of the contents on the ground floor was crushed rather than burned. Once the fire was out and deemed safe the site was divided into a grid system and the ash and rubble from each section was salvaged and placed in 3,860 labelled dustbins. As a new conservation student at nearby West Dean College, along with conservation professionals and volunteers we picked through the bins, at times sieving the wet sludge and ash, looking for any fragments that could be identified and saved. This system enabled even the tiniest of pieces to be salvaged. In the background you can see the remains of the devastated house. Image 2 shows decorative plaster being salvaged and cleaned. The decision was made to fully restored the house, during this work many dying craft techniques had to be re learned. Caption : What a great way to start The Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend, with a Repair Shop Special! This hand painted plate was originally made as part of an exhibition for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887. Painted by Helen’s great, grandfather it has been cherished by the family for many generations, even in its damaged condition.
