Caption : This lovely photograph, recently taken at their home in Kent, is of Anne & David Spencer, I am desperately sad to have to say that they were both killed yesterday in a car accident near their home. They were farmers, animal lovers & devoted parents to Robert, Caryn, Helen & Philip and adored their 8 Grandchildren, the only blessing is that they died together, so will never have to mourn the loss of each other. I suspect many of you may want to join me in sending so much love to Phil and all his family. Please keep them in your thoughts & prayers, Thank you.Likes : 165046

Caption : Monday – Thank you, Thank you so much. I read all my instagram messages, but it’s going to take a while this time, I’m overwhelmed by all the lovely comments & hugely touched. 🙏😘 So It’s a huge privilege listening to your son give a speech at your wedding, which is one reason Ben & I are looking so cheery in this picture taken by @catherinebradleyphotography. I share a great deal on here and so appreciate all the kind & interesting comments, but I felt our wedding should be private, and luckily on the day it was. Unfortunately it turned out that there was an unseen pap, so I have released a couple of our own pictures. The upside is that at least I get a chance to thank publicly some of the lovely people who worked so hard, at such short notice, to make our wedding pretty special, amongst them the ladies @oscardelarenta who put sleeves on a dress I bought in the sale two weeks ago 😳, and it’s not all about the girls, Ben had a new suit made by the amazing @josephdarcystudio, Thanks so much Jack. Carla @teasmelondon who always works miracles, Harriette and her amazing team @studioviola_ who did the flowers so beautifully, @marbleprivate for whom nothing was a problem @mountstreetprinters whose patience & wise advice is extraordinary, @juliabellmakeup who didn’t know it was my wedding until she met me @theconnaught two hours before, and all the home team who make everything we ever do possible, and without whom nothing would occur, and of course The Reverend Stephen Coleman and Rosslyn and Richard at The Grosvenor Chapel who made the whole thing happen in the first place. To marry in the same church that my parents and grandparents married was always my hope and luckily I already know that we did live happily ever after ❤️. (as ever, these thanks are totally genuine and no discounts were sought or offered)Likes : 157415

Caption : In March 2014, 3 months after my Mum died, I came to stay with a friend on Harbour Island, in the Bahamas. I knew nothing about the place, it was my first big trip with the boys but no Ben, and they were 5 & 7. Within 3 days I had made an appointment to see a “real estate agent” 😜 I know the lingo now, and I spent nearly all the money I’d saved from making Locations on a house here. I have never regretted it for a moment, if you’ve ever been lucky another to come to the spot that Tim Peak called “the most beautiful place on earth from space” you will know that the sea is incredible and for someone who loves to swim it is sheer bliss. My children & stepchildren now have an amazing life here and many, many friends. No-one watches my shows or knows anything about my work, I’m just another middle aged Mum. People often whinge about fame, and half the time it’s rubbish; many of us would not have what we have without the fame, and though it’s a treat to be anonymous sometimes, that should’t stop me sharing this place with those who bother to follow me on Instagram.Likes : 67480

Caption : Bay is 18 today and I am the mother of an adult son. Wow! When did that happen, when did our 11lb 11oz bouncing baby become a grown up? Luckily he is still the same immensely sunny, kind and generous creature he always was. I am hugely proud of the man he is and the fact that in many ways he has not changed one jot. So to all the other parents out there a bit worried about what happens when their children grow up, don’t, it is just another stage and just as joyful as the others, but do hold on to every moment. ❤️ PS Balloon arches are not as easy as they look 😳Likes : 54464

Caption : No guests, no one to cook for or entertain, my boys are elsewhere having a ball, as they should be, and I’m building up my strength for the next mountain, the sky is a little grey but the sun will come out tomorrow. My life is amazing, and so much of that is due to my work, the people who trusted me to help them find & alter the thing that is most important to them, their home, and all the lovely people who watch Phil & I do what we do. I am fortunate enough to have a few homes, something I’ve been shy of admitting, but that’s absurd, no one says Elton John or Taylor Swift can’t have more then one home. So this is one of my favourite views in one of my favourite places 🇨🇭and I am going to be more real, in all sorts of ways going forward. PS Thank you for all the lovely comments about my dress in the previous post, yes I do almost everything in a dress 👗Likes : 48807

Caption : A lot has been said about The Princess of Wales since she stepped back from her public work to undergo surgery, and since her announcement on Friday. I thought this picture was so beautiful, but it also says “onwards & upwards”, she is not looking to us for approval, she is focused on something else, which is how it should be. My Mum was also 42 when she was diagnosed with cancer. It turned our lives upside down, and things were never the same again. I’ve thought a lot about Mum this weekend and all the treatments and operations she endured, her focus was always on being there for us, my sisters were only 3 & 8 when she was diagnosed. I am a great admirer of the Princess, of the work she does and the causes she has chosen to champion, I hope she is able to return to this work, but her family comes first.Likes : 43003

Caption : This is my Dad’s extraordinary house is Dorset. I wasn’t brought up here, my parents moved on the day Location, Location, Location was commissioned. I was driving down to help with the move and I got a call to say the show was wanted by @channel4. So for the last 24 years I have criss crossed the UK learning an extraordinary amount about my country, my fellow citizens and the houses that have been built, and are being built, in the UK. I’ve probably seen more homes in more places than anyone else. Loads of people in the industry have seen lots of houses in their area, or a variety of areas but the number of lived in properties that Phil and I have seen across the country would be hard to beat, especially as we spend at least 2 hours in each one. My view that many modern so called “detached” houses don’t deserve the description, given the small distance between the houses and the poor build quality is entirely valid. I have seen many semi detached and terraced homes which have better sized gardens, larger & lighter rooms and have better sound & heat insulation than some modern detached homes. They also make far better use of available land and their layout is more conducive to community cohesion. We need to have a more open debate about what we build and where we build it. Unfortunately our national newspapers have no interest in any of this; What they want is clicks, with a side order of spite & devision. So instead of acknowledging that my experience of homes across the UK means my views should at least be examined, they instead say “she lives in a detached house but says other shouldn’t” this pathetic approach is something that holds us back in the UK. People don’t speak up for fear of this type of rubbish. Luckily I’m not one of them. 🙄😘Likes : 39222

Caption : This Englishman in New York was a real charmer, he’s only a year old! We bumped into him wandering round interiors stores, luckily both of us think this counts as a dream holiday. It’s cold & bright and we’ve been biking around and taking in the sights, I could never get bored of New York. 🍎 #englishmastiff #newyorkLikes : 35035

Caption : This lovely picture was taken of my Mother-in-law Gretchen Andersen by her daughter @andersenemily_photography. Gretchen died on Monday the 17th of June, aged 94. I knew of Gretchen long before I met her son, I worked on Country Living Magazine, and Gretchen’s shop @lacquerchest was the go to place for renting props for any food or interiors photoshoot. I could never have known that years later our sons would have the run of that wonderful shop, and that Gretchen would be endlessly patient with her Grandsons’ questions and never worry that they would break anything. We only had 12 days between the death of my Dad and Gretchen, but Viv, Gretchen’s adored husband died in December 2013, a month before my Mum, so we’ve been here before. Dad and Gretchen were both legends in the antique world and leave behind an extraordinary legacy of knowledge and appreciation of beautiful things. Both of their working lives and much of their spare time was about creating amazing spaces in which they welcomed all their friends and family. They were both in marriages with people who shared their passions and interests, but they both soldiered on after they lost their soul mates and both endured difficult illnesses at the end which they faced with extraordinary stoicism. So much to mourn the loss of, so much to be proud of ❤️Likes : 29511

Caption : So much to say about @glastofest and so few pictures because we were in the moment most of the time. When I asked my son what he wanted for his 18th, and he said he wanted to go to Glastonbury I was at a loss, I’d never been and didn’t think it was my scene. It turns out it’s for everyone, I went with my oldest friend, Claire, and my Goddaughter Daisy as well as Bay, none of us had ever been before. We had decent shared showers & slightly better loos than many, but we stayed on site in tiny little huts called a pad pods and we saw everything we could and walked for miles & miles. Our favourite food was @dosadeli but the “Lebanese Coffee” sheep’s milk ice cream was delicious and the guy who sold me a cuppa & egg sandwich at 6am was a saint, in fact everyone was so sweet, friendly and helpful, the atmosphere all around the site was one of patience & kindness. We saw Keane, Dua Lipa, Little Simz, Cyndi Lauper, Femi Kurti, Anne-Marie, The Sugababes, and of course Coldplay, very sad not to have got there in time for Squeeze and to have to leave before The Gypsy Kings, but for a Radio 4 listener it’s not bad 😜. I’m as cynical as the next person, but I have returned feeling remarkably healed after one of the most difficult months of my life. Thank you #glastonbury. Caption : We bought Meadowgate as a ruin just before Oscar was born, 16 years ago, for almost as long we’ve spent every August Bank Holiday here with many friends & their kids. This is where many of them had their first taste of independence, walking to the beach alone or going rock pooling and returning safely with their treasures, this year there are only 5 kids with us, and they aren’t really kids at all, the others are working, travelling or studying, living independently as they should be. It is our job to raise our children to leave the nest, the enormous cost of nests aside 🙄. I knew that we were becoming a more risk averse culture in the U.K. and the US. My time is Switzerland has taught me a lot there, as in Japan, children walk to school alone and are encouraged to learn early to be self sufficient, and trusted to make sensible choices. I knew that wasn’t happening as much at home and I was interested by the walk of @jonathanhaidt and others who see a link between less freedom & trust and more mental health concerns amongst young people. So when I said Oscar had done what so many, many young people did after O Levels, and now after GCSEs, and gone inter railing, despite being Summer born and therefore young for his school year, I knew some people might think 🤔, but I thought his trip was inspiring, and it never occurred to me in a million years that a call from children services would be involved, it’s been a huge shock, not least for Oscar. But I hope the silver lining to this cloud is that everyone stops & thinks about the freedoms we had as children, and ask what harm could be done, not by the freedoms, but by the restrictions and fears we are imposing on our kids.Likes : 27043

Obviously this entire post is an excuse to use this piece of music 😜🇨🇭#thesoundofmusic, but there is every chance @julieandrews has actually done this same walk as she has spent a great deal of time here.Likes : 25927

God she really was amazing. 💔Likes : 24088

Caption : Obviously this won’t repair the damage done or get back the two weeks lost to fending off the abuse, and forcing the Sunday Times to admit they’d made up things to create controversy and clicks. Nor can I do much about the other papers or the stuff on TV or Radio, not to mention the abuse on social media. You can get apologies for lies but there’s nothing to be done about the twisted stuff, the stuff which with a tweak here or there entirely changes the meaning of what you said & feel. Anyone who think it’s just tomorrow’s chip paper, or the price you pay for fame is incredibly naive. I have come out of this experience a far less trusting person. But I still believe that if you find the right person to talk to about today’s housing issues, which are going to create such problems for the future if we don’t address them, it might be possible to change things. Thank you to all the people who did put lovely comments on my Instagram, it was very much appreciated. 😘Likes : 20403

We’re working with a lovely family in Caterham and one of the great perks of my job is sometimes being driven about, but at the moment it’s more of a downside as sitting in the car is a wee bit sore; following the stair surfing incident I’m much happier standing up. But I did want to say a HUGE thank you for all the very kind messages, I don’t recommend hurling yourself down 15 steps, but I was very touched that people were so kind, every cloud….Likes : 20324

We saw beautiful wallpaper & fabric @antoinettepoisson, bought wooden hooks & glass bobèche @axs_design, Snoopy T-shirts @merciparis & 2 dresses at 50% off, I do love a sale, @fragonardparfumeurofficiel. We had dinner @hotelcostes and almost cricked our necks looking at the glamorous folk. We swam in the pool @sohohouse Paris, where technical problems meant they had no food, so they upgraded us to a room you could see from the moon, we were chuffed to bits. We spent the next morning wondering around the Pigalle area, we were going to the flea market my sister Tash recommended, but never made it because there was so much to see, 24 hours after we’d arrived we headed for the Gare du Nord and hopped on the @eurostar. I made it home in time for dinner with Claire, who is still wearing her Glastonbury wrist band, at the delicious @carmelrestaurants in Queen’s Park. Today our Olympians head to @paris2024 I hope they have an amazing time, and get to see some of this glorious city. Bravo & Good Luck #paris2024🇫🇷 (obviously it should go without saying that none of this is an ad or promo, I only mention places because I know lots of people would also love to go to Paris and these were great shops & places we enjoyed)Likes : 18981

But I’m really grateful to all the people who have sent kind & supportive messages. Those who seek to portray me as a compassion free zone have an agenda, and huge prejudices, but in the end our work, the work of all the house hunters, contributors & crew that have tried so hard to tell the real story of finding a home in the UK over the last 22 years will win through.
