Laura Benanti Instagram - With every passing day it becomes clearer to me that while we are all the stars of our own movie, we are ultimately a part of the same film. Sometimes we’re the good guy, sometimes we’re the villain, the background artist, the crew…but we are very rarely the director. We can try, but the story likely will not take shape the way we intend, despite our most dedicated or stubborn insistence that it be done our way. All we can control is our own performance. This is so hard when we are tired, full of grief, anger or frustration. All of this is to say that I continue to learn that while I cannot truly know what the next scene will be I still have to stay in it. Commit to it. Remembering that we’re all doing our best, and hoping that the other players remember that of me. Hoping your Sunday, and all the days, are filled with empathy and love in all directions. 🤍

Last night I had the pleasure of performing with my musical husband @therealtoddalmond for the @sinfoniagulfcoast gala.
✨
Two nights ago I was sitting on the beach in beautiful Destin Florida, watching the waves, the sky, the moon. And the ache of missing my Mamoo made my heart feel so big and sore. I let the tears wet my face and I said out loud “Mamoo if you are still with me give me a sign. Please show me that you’re still here with me because I need you”. Last night at the concert I spoke about my Mamoo and a lovely woman in the front row looked up at me and said “I called my grandmother Mamoo!” I have never met another person who called their grandmother Mamoo.

And there she was. I burst out laughing because my Mamoo, brilliant and bold Elsie Jones, has never been known for being subtle!

She will always be with me. Last night she told me so.

Laura Benanti - 8.7K Likes - I’ve been wondering why I’ve been feeling so “off” the past few days (other than the never ending pain and suffering of a world on fire). And then I remember - - It was around this time last year that I had my fourth miscarriage. And my body remembers. My cells remember. And that makes me realize that this likely happens three other times per year. The times I feel extra “emotional” or “lonely”. Or my body aches a little more. Feels a little more foreign. I cry more easily and more often.

There is no cut off point for grief. It is not linear or finite. Everyone does it differently. There is no “right way”. I’m making peace with the idea that my grief might never be gone. Quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) sitting next to me. And so we learn to sit side by side.

It gets me thinking about postpartum depression and anxiety. And how we associate it primarily with new motherhood, if we acknowledge it at all. But mine is often there. Tapping me on the shoulder. Whispering in my ear. It’s smaller now, but it too might never be “gone”.

So the three of us sit together - on the same bench as joy, fear, curiosity, anger, contentment, resentment, gratitude and love.

And we hold hands.

Into a world of war, we pray for peace.

We pray for all those whose lives have been shattered by the continued bloodshed and destruction in Israel and Palestine.
We pray for the safe return of the Israeli hostages and for their loved ones who live in the agony of waiting and uncertainty and fear.

We pray for the people of Gaza, who continue to endure suffering and loss and death in this crisis.
We pray for those who have dedicated their lives to creating paths to peace and dignity within this troubled region – folks from both Israel and Palestine who have worked together and long for a world where ancient grievances and global politics are supplanted by shared dreams and a vision of true shalom for all their people.

May they not lose heart. May they continue to plant seeds of hope. May our leaders find creative and compassionate paths to peace and shared community. And may we, who root our faith in the call to love and justice, continue to lift our voices and join our hearts and hands with all those who work for dignity and peace. AMEN.
