Lee Hsien Loong Instagram - Last November, I announced my intention to step down as Prime Minister this year. I will relinquish my role as Prime Minister on 15 May 2024 and DPM @lawrencewongst will be sworn in as the next Prime Minister on the same day. For any country, a leadership transition is a significant moment. Lawrence and the 4G team have worked hard to gain the peopleā€™s trust, notably during the pandemic. Through the Forward Singapore exercise, they have worked with many Singaporeans to refresh our social compact and develop the national agenda for a new generation. The 4G team are committed to keeping Singapore working well and moving ahead. These will always be top priorities for the government. It has been an eventful 40 years in Parliament, 20 as PM, where Iā€™ve overseen and participated in many substantial debates ā€” from the building of Integrated Resorts, the NMP and NCMP schemes, as well as the Elected Presidency. I thank all MPs, NMPs, and NCMPs, past and present, for your contributions to robust and serious debates in @parl_sg. Lee Hsien Loong Instagram - Was looking forward to meeting @apple CEO Tim Cook today but unfortunately Iā€™ve caught a flu bug and had to cry off (I tested negative for COVID-19 and am working from home, but am otherwise fine). Apple is expanding their campus in Ang Mo Kio, which will create more jobs and spur innovation. Apple opened its first facility here over 40 years ago, manufacturing the Apple II series computers. I visited it in 1985, and later officiated the opening of their new building in 1988. Glad that Singapore is now a regional hub for Apple, and home to three of their retail stores. We have made much progress over the past decades, but there are bound to be challenges in the road ahead. Lee Hsien Loong Instagram - Thanked His Majesty King Abdullah II Bin Al Hussein and the Jordanian government for facilitating Singaporeā€™s humanitarian assistance for Gaza. @thersaf, at the invitation of the Jordanian government, will air drop humanitarian aid supplies to Gaza together with the Royal Jordanian Air Force. The RSAF is deploying a Multi-Role Tanker Transport and a Hercules C-130 to Jordan to conduct the mission. Singapore will do what it can to help the civilians in Gaza. Lee Hsien Loong Instagram - Thanked His Majesty King Abdullah II Bin Al Hussein and the Jordanian government for facilitating Singaporeā€™s humanitarian assistance for Gaza. @thersaf, at the invitation of the Jordanian government, will air drop humanitarian aid supplies to Gaza together with the Royal Jordanian Air Force. The RSAF is deploying a Multi-Role Tanker Transport and a Hercules C-130 to Jordan to conduct the mission. Singapore will do what it can to help the civilians in Gaza. The funds raised will help Eden Centre for Adults to support programmes for adults on the autism spectrum. It is also NJCā€™s 55th anniversary this year. Lee Hsien Loong Instagram - My thanks to President @jokowi for hosting my delegation and me to the Singapore-Indonesia Leadersā€™ Retreat in Bogor today. This was our seventh and final Retreat together, as both of us will soon be stepping down from our respective roles. President Jokowi and I reviewed the excellent progress in bilateral relations over the past decade. One major achievement was the Expanded Framework Agreements on airspace, defence and extradition that came into force in March 2024. Today our ministers signed an MOU on mangrove ecosystems, and a joint update on defence cooperation. We also agreed to step up cooperation in new and emerging areas such as the digital economy, sustainability and healthcare. Indonesia is our largest neighbour and the largest economy in @asean. Its prosperity and stability will uplift and benefit the rest of the region. Singapore will strengthen our ties with Indonesia in the spirit of mutual benefit and respect. I thank President Jokowi for his leadership and his commitment to Indonesiaā€™s ties with Singapore. I have deeply appreciated working with him to strengthen trust and cooperation between our countries, and I wish him the very best. AI and deepfake technology are becoming better by the day. Lee Hsien Loong Instagram - Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam made a Ministerial statement on Singaporeā€™s national drug control policy in Parliament today. Singapore has long maintained a strict drug control policy. This has undeniably been effective in the fight against drugs, even though some have criticised it. I thank CNB for their steadfast efforts to control the drug situation. We have also implemented anti-drug programmes and preventive drug education to tackle the problem upstream. Joining us in Parliament today were ex-drug offenders, their family members, and officials and volunteers involved in anti-drug programmes. Lee Hsien Loong Instagram - Dr Tony Tan was my Minister when I first entered politics and was posted to the @mti_sg. He was a nurturing mentor with sharp insight and vision. I was honoured to launch his autobiography, ā€œTony Tan Keng Yam: My Political Journeyā€. The book offers a glimpse into Dr Tanā€™s extensive and illustrious career which spans academia, the private sector, public service and politics. He spent nearly half a century in public service, first as an MP for Sembawang, later as DPM, and finally as President. He held senior appointments in national institutions and many ministerial posts. He oversaw major transformations and policies, and made courageous and far sighted decisions. His decision to step forward as President was no less difficult ā€“ he protected our reserves, unified our nation, and served Singaporeans with distinction. This is the fifth year of the Singapore-New Zealand Enhanced Partnership (EP). Weā€™ve made good progress and are expanding the EP with a new pillar on Supply Chains and Connectivity, to keep our economies connected amidst an increasingly volatile global situation. Next year will be the 60th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. PM Luxon and I agreed we should elevate our EP to further explore initiatives such as sustainable aviation, green economy and supply chains. Muslims fast before dawn breaks to sunset, and aim to grow spiritually. Mosques will be enlivened with tarawih prayers. Supplementary prayer spaces around the neighbourhood will be made available too. I will be joining our Muslim friends this month to break fast, and I encourage you to do so too. Take the time to learn about other religions and cultures, something Singaporeans have the privilege of doing, in our multi-religious and multicultural society. Lee Hsien Loong Instagram - Last month, a fire broke out at a coffeeshop in Ang Mo Kio Ave 10. @myscdf and @singaporepoliceforce responded, put the fire out and evacuated the residents upstairs. Very fortunately no one was seriously injured, though the premises were heavily damaged. These incidents remind us to be ready, and to know how to respond when the unexpected happens. At Teck Gheeā€™s Community Resilience Day, our grassroots leaders engaged residents and helped prepare them for situations ā€“ such as fires or medical emergencies. This festival is associated with the story of the patriotic Chinese poet Qu Yuan, who threw himself into the Mi Luo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month when he learnt that his country had fallen to the enemy. It was said that villagers and fishermen tossed rice dumplings into the river to prevent the fishes from eating Qu Yuanā€™s body. Nowadays, we commemorate this traditional festival with thrilling dragon boat races and delicious rice dumplings. In Singapore, different dialect and cultural groups offer their own version of rice dumplings, reflecting our unique multiculturalism. There are also healthier choices with less sodium and fat. I last attended an SPF dining-in 10 years ago in 2014. Back then, I spoke about the need to maintain the highest standards of integrity, commitment, and professionalism, as well as to continue investing in technology to deal with the latest threats. Glad that the SPF has exceeded my expectations in the years since then. According to recent surveys, Singaporeanā€™s level of trust in the police is among the highest in the world. This is a remarkable achievement. I would like to express my appreciation to all SPF officers, past and present, for their hard work, dedication, vigilance, and loyalty. The latest report by @nea_sgā€™s Meteorological Service Singapore found 2023 to be our fourth warmest year on record, with temperatures hitting 37Ā°C on May 13 in Ang Mo Kio. Our local findings echo a recent UN report, which found that 2023 was the warmest year on record for the world. 2024 is projected to be even warmer! Climate change is palpably warming the earth and creating extreme weather patterns. The government is committed to sustainability. We are enhancing coastal protection, and funding research on heat resilience. We aim to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The transition will require careful long term planning, enormous resources, and sustained effort from all. But we have accomplished difficult tasks before, and for our survival we must embark on this now. We must work together to safeguard our future. Small steps make a big difference ā€“ reducing waste, switching to energy-efficient devices, and buying local produce. Congratulations to Caldras Tan from NUS High, Caleb Chia from ACS(I), and Tran Doan Duy Phuc and Wong Kheng Hshin from RI for all winning gold medals at the first-ever International Nuclear Science Olympiad, which was recently held in the Philippines! They competed in a series of theoretical and experimental tasks. Tran Doan Duy Phuc also won a special award for obtaining the highest points in the experimental exam. Well done! I visited the site this morning, and spoke to the owner, and some of the affected residents who lived above the coffeeshop. The coffeeshop was badly damaged, but thankfully no one was seriously injured. Luckily, the fire was put out quickly by the SCDF, and did not spread to the wet market and food centre next to it. Also luckily, the owner had fire insurance. This incident reminds us of the importance of having insurance too for our homes (even after the mandatory period), so that if we are caught in similar circumstances, we will still have some protection and help. And if you own a wet market or cooked food stall, please protect it, and yourself, with fire insurance too! I visited the site this morning, and spoke to the owner, and some of the affected residents who lived above the coffeeshop. The coffeeshop was badly damaged, but thankfully no one was seriously injured. Luckily, the fire was put out quickly by the SCDF, and did not spread to the wet market and food centre next to it. Also luckily, the owner had fire insurance. Caption : A fire broke out at the coffeeshop at Block 407 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at around 2:40am today. I visited the site this morning, and spoke to the owner, and some of the affected residents who lived above the coffeeshop. The coffeeshop was badly damaged, but thankfully no one was seriously injured. Luckily, the fire was put out quickly by the SCDF, and did not spread to the wet market and food centre next to it. Also luckily, the owner had fire insurance. This incident reminds us of the importance of having insurance too for our homes (even after the mandatory period), so that if we are caught in similar circumstances, we will still have some protection and help. This was our seventh and final Retreat together, as both of us will soon be stepping down from our respective roles. President Jokowi and I reviewed the excellent progress in bilateral relations over the past decade. One major achievement was the Expanded Framework Agreements on airspace, defence and extradition that came into force in March 2024. Today our ministers signed an MOU on mangrove ecosystems, and a joint update on defence cooperation. We also agreed to step up cooperation in new and emerging areas such as the digital economy, sustainability and healthcare. Indonesia is our largest neighbour and the largest economy in @asean. Its prosperity and stability will uplift and benefit the rest of the region. Singapore will strengthen our ties with Indonesia in the spirit of mutual benefit and respect. I thank President Jokowi for his leadership and his commitment to Indonesiaā€™s ties with Singapore. I have deeply appreciated working with him to strengthen trust and cooperation between our countries, and I wish him the very best. Caption : My thanks to President @jokowi for hosting my delegation and me to the Singapore-Indonesia Leadersā€™ Retreat in Bogor today. This was our seventh and final Retreat together, as both of us will soon be stepping down from our respective roles. President Jokowi and I reviewed the excellent progress in bilateral relations over the past decade. One major achievement was the Expanded Framework Agreements on airspace, defence and extradition that came into force in March 2024. Today our ministers signed an MOU on mangrove ecosystems, and a joint update on defence cooperation. We also agreed to step up cooperation in new and emerging areas such as the digital economy, sustainability and healthcare. Indonesia is our largest neighbour and the largest economy in @asean. Its prosperity and stability will uplift and benefit the rest of the region. Singapore will strengthen our ties with Indonesia in the spirit of mutual benefit and respect. I thank President Jokowi for his leadership and his commitment to Indonesiaā€™s ties with Singapore. I have deeply appreciated working with him to strengthen trust and cooperation between our countries, and I wish him the very best. But we have accomplished difficult tasks before, and for our survival we must embark on this now. We must work together to safeguard our future. In January, PM @anwaribrahim_my and I observed the completion of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS Link) connecting span and witnessed the signing of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) MOU. President @tharman.sg will be hosting the Sultan to a State Banquet tonight. Tomorrow Sultan Ibrahim will visit the @parl_sg and and be briefed on how the Thomson-East Coast line connects with the RTS Link.
