The return of the Gweagal Spears is a significant step forward on the journey towards reconciliation and truth-telling. Bringing our history back home provides an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, young and old, to build a greater understanding of our shared national story. Congratulations to the La Perouse Aboriginal Community on the decades of work and advocacy to return the Gweagal Spears, which will have a lasting positive impact on future generations. 📸 Australian High Commission in the United KingdomLikes : 1223

Caption : Great news! We’re making a landmark investment in remote housing across the Northern Territory. The 10-year commitment by the Federal and Northern Territory Governments will see up to 270 homes built each year, with the goal of halving overcrowding. It also includes continued support for repairs and maintenance. This investment is a game changer that will make a difference to the lives of so many Aboriginal people living in remote communities. It’s not just an investment in housing, it’s an investment in people. Increasing housing supply will ease overcrowding, which we know is a major barrier to closing the gap. This government is committed to improving housing in remote communities and closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.Likes : 850

Over 40 First Nations families will get a roof over their heads, after a $20 million investment from the Aboriginals Benefits Account in the Yilli Rreung Housing Aboriginal Corporation. They’ve invested in 42 homes that will be leased to employed, low-income First Nations families. This boost in housing supply in the Greater Darwin area will help ease overcrowding and make a huge difference to people’s lives. The Albanese Labor Government is making a difference. She made her mark in Victoria, including by helping to establish the Aboriginal Community Elders Service, and the landmark 2013 native title settlement which formally recognised the Dja Dja Wurrung People as the Traditional Owners of the lands in central Victoria. She will be sorely missed by many and it was fitting that her memory was recognised at a state funeral in Victoria today.Likes : 499

Overcrowding makes it harder for First Nations children to get the best start in life, and we know many poor health outcomes start with overcrowding. So we’re doing something about it by fixing remote housing. One of these is the Junior Ranger program, which partners kids and schools with local Indigenous ranger programs. Kids get to learn more about their culture and are excited to head to school and stay engaged. So we’re expanding the Junior Ranger program to 50 new sites across Australia. This means more students can take part in this amazing project, just like these students from Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School in Coffs Harbour NSW. The Junior Ranger program has delivered proven results by keeping First Nations students engaged in school. They’re two of the four people in Barton who were recognised for their service to our community on Australia Day. I caught up with both of them for morning tea to thank them for their important work. Dr Matthew Chu received a membership of the Order of Australia for his work in emergency medicine, and Peter Leondaritis received a medal for his long service to the Greek Australian community. So many Australians like Peter and Matthew go above and beyond for the community, and they don’t do it for recognition. But let’s give them a big congratulations for their achievements.Likes : 326

Her deep love of arts, community and Aboriginal rights was evident to all those who were fortunate enough to know her. She was one of the founding members of the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative and was exhibited across Australia and the world. Here we are together at the 90th birthday of Undercliffe Public School back in 2017. I think it’s clear to see how her presence could light up a room. Caption : Aunty Beryl Carmichael was a role model for our people and an inspiration to her community in Western New South Wales. She lived a life of giving back to her community and the people around her, including by helping to set up the Nyampa Housing Company in Menindee and serving on the first committee of Wiimpatja Rehabilitation Centre in Broken Hill. With her wisdom and leadership, she made a real impact to people’s lives as a director of the NSW Aboriginal Legal Service, and later as Aboriginal Cultural Studies advisor with the Department of Education and Training in 1990. She shared her knowledge and experiences with school children and the wider community across New South Wales, and helped ensure an Aboriginal perspective was heard in the school curriculum. Her legacy lives on in the thousands of lives she touched and in the gentle but firm push she was able to give the arc of history towards justice and truth. It was beautiful that her community could come together last week in Menindee to recognise her lifeLikes : 287

Caption : Proud to stand with my colleagues for Endometriosis Awareness Month. Endometriosis is a disease that affects 1 in 7 women. Too many women suffer in silence with this painful disease. Our Government invested $58.3 million in last year’s budget to support women with endometriosis and pelvic pain. This included the establishment of 22 specialised clinics which are now all up and running. Because we’re a Government that delivers for all Australians.Likes : 236

Caption : Hello from Milikapiti! It’s a beautiful day as we’ve signed a historic remote housing agreement designed to halve overcrowding. We know that overcrowding leads to poorer outcomes in terms of health, education and safety. If we invest in better housing, we will get better outcomes across the board. This partnership with the Northern Territory Government, Aboriginal Housing NT and Aboriginal Land Councils is vital to successfully delivering homes for more communities across the NT. It will see the construction of up to 2,700 new homes across the Territory. Because we’re committed to improving housing in remote communities and closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.Likes : 226

Caption : Meet Charmaine! She’s has a job that pays her properly because of the work our Government is doing to create real jobs with proper wages in remote communities. We’ve been running a program to trial new approaches to creating real jobs in remote communities. That program helped create the Kowanyama Women’s Hub, where Charmaine learned valuable skills before becoming the Hub supervisor last year. She now leads a local retail store that sells handmade products that women in the Hub create. It means she gets a proper wage, a job that suits her skills as a community leader, and there are opportunities for others in Kowanyama. The Liberals’ failed Community Development Program didn’t deliver for remote communities. But we’re replacing it with a program that works, with the next step being our remote jobs and economic development program that will create 3,000 jobs. There’s more to do to deliver economic opportunity in remote communities, but we’re working hard to deliver a better future for Indigenous Australians.Likes : 224

Caption : It’s been a big eight years since I was elected to represent our diverse community of Barton. Together we’ve achieved so much, like upgrading our local sports facilities at Bexley Oval and Illiden Sports Centre, supporting local community groups to deliver important programs, and investing in schools across our community. Our Government has been working hard to deliver responsible cost of living relief, including tax cuts and a $300 energy bill rebate. Let’s keep working together to make our community the best place in Australia to live.Likes : 222

A big thank you to James, Helen, John, Marcus and Baby Ethan for welcoming me to the 1st Hurstville Scout Hall. With the support of our Government’s Stronger Community grants, they’ve been able to repair and refurbish their historic scout hall. Now more families can benefit from quality community spaces, supported by our government.Likes : 212

Caption : Reconciliation is about communities coming together. In Queanbeyan this morning, hundreds of schoolkids and community members came together for the 2024 Reconciliation walk. They came together to show respect, to learn, and to continue the long walk towards reconciliation. Thank you to everyone who came out, and to Billy Tompkins and the Karabar High School Dance Group for their lovely welcome too.Likes : 207

This month they received a $200,000 grant from the Information Linkages and Capacity Building program for their new P(ART)ICIPATION project. I met with CEO Natalie Rose, and Philanthropy and Partnerships Director Cathy Nisbet to hear more about how the project will support young people with disability build their creative skills and put on full-length shows each year. Since 1976 the team at Shopfront have been working with young people from diverse backgrounds and experiences to engage in the performing arts, and I can’t wait to see where this new grant takes that work.Likes : 206

At NAISDA, they’re expanding their work as Australia’s premier Indigenous arts training organisation because of support from our government, including $13m in the latest Budget. At Nunyara Aboriginal Health, I heard about the work being done to improve First Nations health outcomes. We’re making medicines cheaper for Indigenous Australians by expanding the Closing the Gap PBS Co-Payment to all PBS medicines. I visited The Glen and shared a yarning circle with The Glen for Women community. It was a heartwarming experiencing. And at Bara Barang Aboriginal Corporation, I met with young First Nations people who are getting work and training because of programs funded by our Government. The Central Coast is a beautiful part of Australia, and it was beautiful to see how our Government is making a difference.Likes : 202

Nightingale is a partnership between Nightingale Housing, Fresh Hope Communities and the Churches of Christ, developed with renters in mind. Projects like this are vital to tackling the housing shortage across Australia, and are a great asset for the Marrickville community. Thank you to Nightingale Housing for a tour of this beautifully designed building. Australians need affordable housing and we need to build more homes right across the country. Our Homes for Australia plan invests billions to do just that, and we’re boosting Fee-Free TAFE to train more tradies to build them.Likes : 197
