May Phua Instagram - Getting into this stance without sinking into my normal and succumbing into my tight hamstrings takes many tries and several corrections to get it close to correct position.
Getting into a new normal would mean repeatedly doing it for more than 10-20mins and several times of a week to a month. The takeaway, if we could build that habit while working out, our mental capacity to handle resilience over into our daily life might increase significantly.

May Phua Instagram - 48 years old. Perimenopause.

Symptoms: Late last year, I experienced constant brain fog, joint sores and aches and waking up at 3am, 4am, 5am then finally at 530am to get ready for work. I didn’t know these were symptoms when I was going through it the whole time, I thought I might be sick (my mother died of cancer and we have a family history of it), so I went for a thorough body examination. Thankfully, aside from a cyst I need to monitor, all was clear.

I wasn’t having the common night flushes,yet.. or roller coaster emotions so of course, didn’t thought I was in the process of perimenopause. Then my menses circle starts to appear more erratic, the puzzles start to fall in.

If you are wondering how I’m handling these days? I’m just smiling and hoping for the best each day. Knowing my body and mental state has helped me to be more forgiving with myself. I set some small restrictions and boundaries for my diet and social interactions so the body gets sufficient rest and calm. Educating myself with information so I wouldn’t be resentful of the current state but adjust accordingly.
Aside from that, I’m happily working with my clients 6 days a week, I am strength training 2x and cardio training (because I enjoy it) 3x a week. If there’s no evening PT sessions, I’m resting in by 9pm. I don’t strive to have everything in my life at this point.

Being clear helps me to learn to be selective. Yes, we might be missing out some when others seem to have fun, learn to be happy for others. We can have it too if we spread out the activities over a period of time. I don’t know why I’m sharing this, but this picture, taken by my hubby reminds me of how the mental state I was in last year, helped me achieve this current state of contentment. I know how some women are struggling through this, I hope this helps, simplifying things has helped me a lot.
We can still live a rewarding and fulfilling lifestyle as our mental and emotional state transitions through life. ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø.

May Phua Instagram - It is important as an Educator (health, fitness, education, any industry in fact) to constantly have pockets of time for nature immersion. Nature immersion has a generative healing force emerging from within a person who is connecting with earthy materials.

As a personal trainer aside from the working environment which is surrounded by lots of hard materials like steel in an enclosed gym setting we are also working in an area where many come to work off their penned up frustrations, upsets and angers. To bring light and positive force to others, it is imperative that we first have that light within ourselves to self heal first then to motivate and carry others upā˜ŗļø.

You may be in a different industry but, if you too also work in a place where nature is not within your area, make it your purpose to be your priority in your own time. It’s not about the steps, the burn, it’s about slowing down, allowing yourself to be in nature immersion for at least an hour. It’s your healing journey 🄰.

May Phua Instagram - Monday.
I often allow myself to over indulge on Sunday nights and Mondays as I do not have to be thinking fast and watching with a sharp eye as Mondays are my off days.
Last night, I went to bed with a bloated stomach filled with bar food and wine.Surprised to see this in the mirror. Thanks for holding up well, my hody.
Will reward you by keeping up with consistent sleep, strength training and cleaner food this week🄰.
P.s. I’m not going anywhere with that band on my head. It’s just a band I use to hold my hair up in showerā˜ŗļø.

May Phua Instagram - The route less traveled. This trail was away from the main attraction, a so called 2nd attraction with a smaller waterfall. I don’t think I would have taken the rocky trail and trek all the way in if not for my friends and the teenagers.
No regrets, impressed with the panoramic view.

May Phua Instagram - AWE - The healing power of Awe.
You know how it feels when you experience something so powerful, vast and mesmerising that it’s so magical it instantly fills your heart with awe, and all a sudden your emotions come at once evoking all your senses, the world and the people around you seems to melt away your insecurities, enveloping you with magic and joy. That is AWE.

Recently I came across a video of a group of people with severe traumatic depression syndrome who were put to test. They went on an expedition to the Arctic. At the end, nature healed them of their insecurities.. they were able to sleep better and feel better about themselves.

AWE has tremendous health benefits that include calming down our nervous system and triggering the release of oxytocin, the ā€œloveā€ hormone that promotes trust and bonding. We can experience awe through encounters with other people’s courage and kindness, nature, collective gatherings (dance, rituals, and ceremonies), music, visual art, religious and spiritual practice, epiphanies, and birth and death.

As I reflected on this, I began to realise maybe that’s why over these years I have been leaning towards travels that can evoke these feelings and memories for myself. Hiking to see the beautiful and vastness of nature, creating family and friends travels that evoke bonding of human beings.

It’s a comforting and wonderful realisation that this is maybe one of my hidden desires to heal myself from our fast pace life. If AWE can release oxytocin that in turns helps to reduce our cortisol levels and repair our past trauma, exposure to more experiences of such should be beneficial for us.

Hope all of us who have the ability to experience AWE through travels receive it n for those who couldn’t travel, opening your options to allow others to help u or be fascinated by art, performance.. these are also ways to release the oxytocin ā˜ŗļø.

May Phua Instagram - Udo Island, An island off jeju island. Udo means cow in korean, supposedly the island looks like a lying cow, known for its scenic beaches, sheer rocky cliffs, and sea caves.

Biking, electric cars are popular transportation choices getting around the island for many however there’s always the choice of ferrying your rental car to the island if you’re with elderly or young kids. Boasting white sand beaches, an emerald sea and a magnificent black sand beach are their famous Seafood ramen, peanut and peanut desserts.

Couldn’t have chosen a better way to experience another’s country culture and island exploration with the teenagers.

May Phua Instagram - The distance was about 2km to the top but the elevation made the trail harder as we mount ourselves up using the ropes in the last lap. And it also started drizzling on the way down making the experience much interesting. Glad to have conquered this with the hubs and the 4 teenagers.
So short doesn’t mean it’s any easier, the route is a lot steeper up and downšŸ˜‰.

May Phua Instagram - Much thanks to Doc Elias for this lunch treat. Im the type they call an introvert extrovert person, who sometimes gets mistaken to be an extrovert. Apart from work, where I devote my 110% on spotting and thinking on my feet every second while at work, I rarely socialise as I recharge by being close to my bed in my pj spending quiet time alone.

So this lunch was scheduled much later when I have more free time and then delayed due to my COVID infection. Appreciate the almost 2 decades of friendship and support from you. Grateful that I have you to advice me on my skincare journey and knowing that you will patiently answer all my queries on why yes, why no to trying the newest treatments and beauty machines in the market.

It’s a joy to be able to share genuine thoughts of our common passion for our profession. Devotion to our clients, their well being and their needs.

May Phua Instagram - Trying to break the barriers while maintaining the form and strength after a week of hiatus. Grip strength definitely needs to improve on my left hand if I want to challenge my hamstrings and glutes in free weights deadlift.

Rounded off today’s training with, a pair of 20.5kg 5 reps x4 rounds, then ended off with a pair of 22.5kg dumbbells 3 reps.

May Phua Instagram - Was down with Covid for a week, body was aching and my mood was down after a couple of days from lying down. Got in about 10-15mins of mobility time in and honestly I couldn’t have felt better.

I edited and compressed it into a 90secs clip. Hope this helps you who may just need to get some stretches and blood circulation going while avoiding any intense workout.

This comprises of some movement to activate the glutes, hamstrings, quads, core, back and arms while loosening the stiff joints.
Have a fantastic day ahead my friends 🄰🄰🄰.

May Phua Instagram - Here’s Serene, 53 years young. We only started out a year ago, mostly working on body awareness, changing bad movement patterns, creating new habits and improving range of motion.

She came in today, we did a few warm up exercises, and I looked at her, I said,ā€ Serene, I think you are ready. I see the way you move, your form is on point .. if u just trust your body and hold your grip tight.. I think you can do it.ā€.

A set of 12kg dumbbells.
4 rounds, 10 reps each. Deadlift and Squat.
Rounded off with a combo move with a set of 4kg DB.
Honestly, this wasn’t my expectation of her nor hers. She came in with a medical report that states she needs to work on strength as her bone density is low, she wants to continue to work on her mobility so that as she age she can still travel and do her hikes. We work in accordance to her goals, and just like that the body responds and today her body reacted in such a way, from my experience, I can tell she is very ready to scale up.

Our body works in so many ways and only if we stay consistent it will respond. It just clicks one day, and yar .. you can ā˜ŗļø
Thank you for being my inspiration and giving me the most valuable gift this week Serene. We all need encouragement and inspiration, I hope this relates to anyone who needs that extra support today and gives you the confidence that no matter which stage of life we are at, we can make a difference ā¤ļø.
Thank you for allowing me to share this video on my IG platform Serene. You have been awesome šŸ™ŒšŸ».

May Phua Instagram - Training movement in all directions allows us to create awareness of our bodies. Training is needed to help the body adapt and maintain its ability to use it daily.
It’s fun, just some movements I’ve been working on the past weeks.

May Phua Instagram - My birthday gift to myself. I don’t often do body weight exercises as often nowadays but I do know I have to once awhile. To keep my movements nimble and light.
Rounded off today’s strength train with-
10 Full Burpees, 20 Plyometric lunges and 50 Jumping Jacks .
x3 rounds .

May Phua Instagram - Birthday Month-
Please grant me more time. As I walk deeper into this journey of mine, like peeling off the skin of an onion diving deeper into the whys the need to move, hows to move and what to do to move better becomes clearer.

Have you been through this phase or at it now, maybe even hear someone saying:ā€ … this is no good, it gives me pain. ā€œ Then you see another, who seemingly enjoys it and doesn’t seem to experience any pain.

Good Posture that translates into good form will give good results. There’s a lot of complexities within, but to make it easy for all to digest, simply,
To begin with, if you are hunched over or having an overly arched back in your daily life, the results yielded from the same exercise done by another with good posture will be very different.
So this is my line of work I face everyday. Identify the degree of misalignment, determine what is most important, give the appropriate training. The human body is very complex but very satisfying once the results show. Pain is gone and miraculously the body becomes more agile and stronger even as we age.

There’s still so much I hope to learn and help others with. The take away from reading this post my friends, the next time you work out, ask yourself what’s this movement for, which part of the body muscles is actually doing the work. U might yield better results. Also, big movement doesn’t necessarily mean better quality, sometimes subtle movement with more intent gives more yield.

May Phua Instagram - Unilateral movements with heavy weights for endurance. Push for stability, precision, intention and endurance.
Playing with 15kg and 8kg got me down this week.
Combo Strength training with a touch of Pilates for that additional mile. And I’m glad my team of clients are all keeping up, regardless of agešŸ˜‰šŸ’ŖšŸ».

And if you’re not sure if you ready for heavy work, your body will not lie. Your form, your stability will always be your best mirror.

May Phua Instagram - Take baby steps, be patient. It’s not easy to stay motivated and upbeat all the time on a fitness journey. Even professional athletes have to take time off from their ā€œworkā€ (training and conditioning).
The first thing I always share with my clients, be patient with yourself.

I always start with a thank you whenever they DM me, because that’s the most important step and hardest part of starting to let go of their past habits. Understand the value of your choice and the reason for that moment, whenever you hit a roadblock, that’s going to be the reason why you cannot take a short cut.

Most trainers take years to be where they are today, a few weeks and months is not going to make you a different person. The numbers will change, however the physical outlook, the strength and mass along with the ability to maintain that level even when you’re ā€œoffā€ training… that will take years.

Even so, each step ahead to create change is a HUGE leap. Why? Because an emotional and mental shift is stronger than any forces in our lives. If you keep building up that intrinsic power, what you gain will eventually be more than what you have expected. Gaining the power to control your mind.

If you are on this path, well done my friend šŸ™ŒšŸ»šŸ™ŒšŸ»šŸ™ŒšŸ» you are doing amazingly well ā¤ļø.

May Phua Instagram - Add variety to your fitness journey by including different forms of activities. Unless you’re training for a specific sport e.g running, bodybuilding, professional athletic in a sport.. incorporating various aspects of fitness helps us to stay committed to movement and keeping up with our fit bodies.
Cardio, Strength and Resistance training, Pilates, Yoga, Team sports , Hiking, Running, even walking is good. Mix it up.
Just like eating, add colours, add variety to your routine once awhile, it keeps you alive😊.

May Phua Instagram - Whenever I get hold of machines. Normally it’s 4 circuits. Start off with active mobility for 10-15mins. Ended with 60 bench hops.

I cannot recommend weights here, however you may start with 50% of your max strength for each workout, work it unilaterally too. Focus on posture and balance.

After which when your body muscles has been activated, circuit 2 -4 will be progressively challenging the strength of each muscle group. That should be 70%-99%of max range with decreasing reps.
Let me know if it works for youšŸ™ŒšŸ».

May Phua Instagram - I came with a keen sincerity to experience and to learn from the coaches abroad. Being a coach myself, it’s a humbling experience and a privilege to be able to be corrected and change . Because we all come from different cultures and diversity, we approach matters differently and that to me it’s super special and incredibly helpful.

As a receiver I get to experience how it’s like and that sets me thinking out of my box. Also, there are strict guidelines where photography is restricted as some areas are guarded spaces where I went only women are allowed.

May Phua Instagram - Why I started Pilates?
Strength and Resistance Training have always been my core. Because of my background, I started seriously looking into this in my early 40s when my quality of life changed with a slipped disc diagnosis and the slowing of metabolism due to aging.
Some time a year ago, as I was coaching my client of late 60s.. I have a small handful of clients above 50s-70. I realised her movements are compromised because of lack of fluidity. Not all of them are of similar condition, but I do realise that apart from targeting specific muscle groups and movements, a flow of movement would help in assisting the body learn how to use the various muscles while maintaining consistent movement. I started introducing flow of movements into my program. However, not everyone has the strength to do body weight flows.
Like how I believe machines can help the weak become stronger, the stronger to become much stronger beyond what the body weight can offer… i studied into the concept of Pilates. Here I am today, putting in the hours of self practice so I can roll this out. I’m already incorporating the Principles of Stott Pilates into my current programs, reformer Pilates is in the plans.
Never stop believing that we can get better as we enter our silver age. Have faith in your training, have faith in your practice and all will come in due time ā¤ļø.

May Phua Instagram - Practising is the only way you can make your desired skill, your best friend. Practice helps you with focusing better on your skills; it enables you to understand your art better and give you time to reflect upon your shortcomings to improve them with time.

May Phua Instagram - Filling my life with love joy and passions.

I remembered a time when I was in my teens and my dad asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up. I sincerely believed and shared that my dream is to study till I couldn’t. My dad told me that it’s not possible, because some time in life I need to learn to be self sufficient and independent.

Today, only a few years shy from 50 my heart is full of gratitude that I’m pursuing my dream. And that the knowledge I acquire will be able to find solutions for work, identify problems and provide the ease of a better quality life for my clients.

I started this journey because i was injured. Diagnosed with a slipped disc on my left lower back L4 & L5, I was advised to go for an operation. I couldn’t sit through a jam without feeling numbness on my legs, ride a bicycle after my toddler nor run without being strapped down the next day on bed. Fast forward years ahead, I explored various ways to work, then eventually took up the ACE Personal Trainer certification because I wanted to know how to help myself.
As I continue on this journey, the need to up skill will always be driven by the needs of my clients. As we all strive towards a better quality life, our challenges against time and Aging will always remain constant. So will be my quest to constantly strive to look for answers and fine tune the techniques and practices to overcome the challenges 😊.

I’m here to assure you, that life will always NOT be a linear journey. Yes, we can’t constantly be happy, always remain strong and stronger or to be reaping rewards all the time. There will be lows, when you feel I need to change, to rest, to stop chasing… it’s okie. That’s when we recover and learn. Embrace and Cherish the journey.

May Phua - 46 Likes - Getting into this stance without sinking into my normal and succumbing into my tight hamstrings takes many tries and several corrections to get it close to correct position.
Getting into a new normal would mean repeatedly doing it for more than 10-20mins and several times of a week to a month. The takeaway, if we could build that habit while working out, our mental capacity to handle resilience over into our daily life might increase significantly.

May Phua - 3 Likes - 48 years old.

No regrets, impressed with the panoramic view.

#selfhealing #awe #thehealingofawe #selfrealization #familytime #theworldisoursandeverythinginit

May Phua - 3 Likes - The distance was about 2km to the top but the elevation made the trail harder as we mount ourselves up using the ropes in the last lap. And it also started drizzling on the way down making the experience much interesting. Glad to have conquered this with the hubs and the 4 teenagers.
So short doesn’t mean it’s any easier, the route is a lot steeper up and downšŸ˜‰.

May Phua - 3 Likes - Much thanks to Doc Elias for this lunch treat.

Rounded off today’s training with, a pair of 20.5kg 5 reps x4 rounds, then ended off with a pair of 22.5kg dumbbells 3 reps.

May Phua - 3 Likes - Was down with Covid for a week, body was aching and my mood was down after a couple of days from lying down.

May Phua - 3 Likes - Here’s Serene, 53 years young.

Caption : Here’s Serene, 53 years young. It’s fun, just some movements I’ve been working on the past weeks.

Cardio, Strength and Resistance training, Pilates, Yoga, Team sports , Hiking, Running, even walking is good. Mix it up.
Just like eating, add colours, add variety to your routine once awhile, it keeps you alive😊.

I’m sure there’s more I haven’t seen in this massive city, till the next time. #dubai

May Phua - 3 Likes - I came with a keen sincerity to experience and to learn from the coaches abroad.

Dubai, thank you for your hospitality. ā¤ļø.

May Phua - 3 Likes - Why I started Pilates?

To create something, we must be ready to change our habits. How else can we expect change if the process is the same?

May Phua - 3 Likes - Filling my life with love joy and passions.

Caption : Filling my life with love joy and passions.
