It made me think of everything Americans have given up to create and protect our unions and now we can proudly say we have played our part and contributed. I’m so proud our union held out. Michelle Clunie Instagram - I am honored to have been asked to read the poem THE MIXNER TREE by Mary Louise Oates at David Benjamin Mixner’s funeral Monday, March 24. It was a gorgeous service. Governor Murphy of New Jersey gave the eulogy. President Biden and President Clinton sent letters to be read, thanking David for his service and for fighting for democracy, freedom and human rights. There was so much love in the room. Once again, in David Mixner fashion, he brought everyone together. I saw friends I had been in the trenches of fighting for equal rights with for over two decades. It was simply an absolute love festival honoring a great Man, who was a friend to all of us. I love you, El Papa Grande. Michelle Clunie Instagram - SHOW HER THE MONEY is a must see documentary! It is produced by my dear friend and fellow QAF Alumni, Sharon Gless. It stars my other dear friend, Dawn LaFreeda. Dawn is a business baddy who went from waitressing at Denny’s, saving her tips, opening her first Dennys, to owning the most Denny’s restaurants and the most restaurants of any person in America. We all turn to Dawn for advice. She was the leader. The first time she tried to set up her corporate accounts at a bank, they were confused what a woman was doing in business and literally would not take her money. This was years ago. Last night was a great night with the LA premiere in Santa Monica. The QnA after was filled with female founders, starting up businesses, boot strap style, and finding their way to investors. Only 2% of the investing funds available in America go towards female founders and yet they are the future. Their businesses thrive because they have always had to do a lot with a little. The future is female founders and the men and women who support them. If you’re a woman starting up a business there are investors out there who are looking for you. Watch this documentary!! Loved hanging out with Sharon and Tyne Daley on the red carpet. I’ve worked with both actresses and love them both. Go female founders!!! Opted out of the red carpet, not ready for Dashiell's face to be out there, and didn't want to do it without him so grabbed a selfie in the loo 😂. Thank you to Dashiell's Godfather, Gregory Rae, for the tickets. It was incredible, the audience was roaring with laughter. It was just as good as when we saw it in NY. Dashiell loves this show! It is a must see!

I think of Rachel Goldberg every day. I think of her son Hersh being held hostage. I do not know Rachel personally but my friend Steve knows Hersh's aunt. I think there should be a statue of Rachel in every city to symbolize what it means to be a mother. Her relentless fight is extraordinary to watch. I pray some day we are lucky enough to have a Mother as president. It is time. Men are so wonderful but the world needs feminine energy to rise up and lead us. We need Mothers to lead right now. I was a nervous Mama but after watching him and his friends Slay SEVEN NATION ARMY, I’ll never be nervous again. I was watching him with a bit of Awe. He looked so at home jamming out on stage, like some old soul. That’s what everyone has been saying who has seen the video- he’s just an old soul. You blew the roof off of that venue and found a second home, the stage! May that second home serve you as it has served me. I cry knowing you’ve found your way to the stage, in your own way. 💕

Michelle Clunie Instagram - Tina Turner. My second concert. I was 16. I drove. It was me, Chris and John. I had taken John to his first ballet class. Chris was already a teacher at the studio, very young teacher. I had a massive crush on Chris. What struck me at the concert was Tina Turner’s energy and her legs. I was blown away by her. Blown. Away. We were only about 8 rows back, center. Her energy was constant and relentless from beginning to end. ‘A force of nature’ doesn’t even do her justice. When I dropped Chris off afterwards, John jumped out of the car and went with him. I put two and two together. I was sad but I was also happy for my friend John. It was the 80’s, we didn’t cry. We dusted off our hearts, moved on and cranked up the tunes. We had icons who were warriors. We had icons who showed us how to survive, how to thrive. What’s love got to do with it. What’s love but a second hand emotion. The sound track of our youth. A woman who owned her trauma and pain and used it to make the world better. She has no idea she created a generation of alchemists. We learned from her how to take our pain and turn it into something usable. We had icons who rocked their hearts out through their pain. We had a queen to teach us and show us the way. We had Tina Turner. Thank you for your energy and your example of a thriving woman in the face of adversity. Little did I know- he was bit too.. lol. We both didn’t want to ruin our bucket list swim. The Manta Rays were truly the most majestic, elegant creatures we had ever seen, up close. The ocean is an entirely other world, within our world, a world I would never have known without Dashiell’s passion for it. Michelle Clunie Instagram - QAF is 21. Wow. It is a little hard to believe. Just yesterday I was introduced to someone I would be working with who said QAF changed his life. I then saw a tweet today from a woman thanking Thea and I for our portrayal of Mel and Linz. Before QAF I was fixated on movies and theatre, I never understood the power of television to change the world and more importantly people’s hearts and minds. I should have understood it as I was so massively influenced by the almighty CBS line up including great shows like MASH and Mary Tyler Moore. Anyway, 21 years ago we all held hands in a hotel room in NY right before the world premiere of QAF and promised this circle would never be broken. And it seems not a week goes by without talking to one of my former cast mates. We became family. The show changed the world and we all changed each other. I love you my rebel soulmates. May we all continue to raise hell and break new ground without fear and may we continue to find those rebel soulmates to take the journey with us ❤️

Michelle Clunie Instagram - It is hard to process. Unimaginable. I went to the Hawaiian islands for the first time when I was fifteen years old. We stayed in Lahaina. I found paradise. I fell in love with Hawaii; the people, the food, the weather, the terrain, the ocean, and the culture. Coming from Portland, it was the first time I ever swam in the ocean. I would then spend the rest of my life going to Hawaii whenever I felt I needed rest or needed to get away. It is where Dashiell first swam in the ocean, first touched sand, first snorkeled and first body surfed. I love Hawaii. I especially love the people of Hawaii. My heart breaks. When we did Queer as Folk we were just diving into these wonderfully flawed characters, focusing on great storytelling and forming a family which I think, coming from theatre, is one of the most important ingredients to a great show or film; Saying to another artist, you can be raw in front of me, naked in front of me, and get to work with respect to your craft and I am going to have your back. I had no idea at the time I was actually playing the first full time, hard 6 on the kinsey scale, never in the closet, series regular lesbian character on television. Not until Girlfriends Magazine told me that in an interview I did with them. Melanie was freedom. Melanie was gutsy. I hold her close to me because she is the closest, most personal character I ever played in my life. She was honest, loyal, loved with her entire heart and gave zero fucks what others thought about her. At a time when the industry was freaking out about this script going around town called Queer as Folk, I too gave zero fucks what people thought about me going after the part. I knew I was built for the role, I knew it was mine and I think I even went into the final network audition and told the execs that; I'm your girl. Dashiell and I were fifty feet up on the side of a tree and I looked at Dashiell and said, “ I have to be honest, I’m not sure I can do this”. He looked at me and said, “ You got this Mom. Michelle Clunie Instagram - Such a fun day, a very New York day. We went down to pier 36 to the Balloon Museum and had a ball, literally. They had a ball pit the size of an entire warehouse floor. Towards the end of the exhibit there was this enormous giant ball with charcoal sticking out of it. As the kids played keepie uppie with the ball it would make marks on the surrounding walls, sometimes creating a nice little abstract. Anyway, fun times. I love NY in that you can step outside your front door and end up making friends for life. It’s a great city for a kid. That’s just the magic of Ny. Michelle Clunie Instagram - Happy International Drag Day!! This shot is from Season two, episode five, Queer As Folk, Showtime. I had spent the summer in SF attending Drag shows and came back and told the producers about the wonderful Drag King shows. The producers wrote it in. As an artist, you must explore, you must go to the ends of the earth and back and push the envelope and buck the status quo. You must be a rebel. You must challenge small minds and lift others up. Dashiell asked me what was important about acting the other day and I told him imagery, stories, tv, film and stage have the ability to change hearts and minds faster than anything else. It unites us, informs us and sets us free. We get to examine the human condition in a world that wants everyone to be mindless foot soldiers. We get to say we are here, we belong, we exist. And it doesn’t matter who you are- most all stories are a hero’s journey, David and Goliath. It doesn’t matter if you are white, black, gay, woman, man, straight, Asian, Latino, transgender… the story is always about the underdog overcoming the odds. Those characters, people, get to stand up and say, we belong! And people go and see these stories where they belong and it can change someone’s life, a country or an entire world. That’s the power of acting and imagery. Storytelling. We have been telling stories since the beginning of time and we will until the end of time. That’s how I feel about acting. By the way, I think I could have played Elvis Presley 💪

Michelle Clunie Instagram - In the last year Dashiell is suddenly washing the car and picking up the mail and taking out the trash, bringing in the groceries- all of which I deeply appreciate.. but nothing compares to the moments where he turns to me and says, “ You’re the best Mom ever”. He says this to me daily. He has done this for a long time, I think it started during the pandemic. I can’t tell you what that is like but it floors me every time and I never take it for granted. I try to earn that every single day. Anyway, there are few things that pierce my heart but Dashiell manages to do that every single day. The truth is he is the best son ever. The best. I am beyond lucky to walk this path with him. His mind alone fascinates me but that pales in comparison to his kindness. Happy 9th birthday my beautiful boy!!! Michelle Clunie Instagram - If anyone has seen Hersh Goldberg-Polin please reach out to me as I will pass along that information to the family. He is from Chicago. He attended a music festival in Israel. He hid in a bomb shelter with about 30 other people. After Hamas terrorists bombed the shelter they asked everyone who could still stand to walk out. Hersh walked out. He was missing an arm. That was the last time he was seen. Hamas threw him in a truck and drove towards the Gaza border. Any information on his whereabouts is appreciated. I stand with Israel. I stand with all innocent victims of terrorism. Update: It has been reported that Hersh and his friend were throwing grenades back out of the shelter as Hamas was throwing them into the shelter. He and his friend saved many lives 🙏🏻 #nohostageleftbehind

Michelle Clunie Instagram - Go see PURLIE VICTORIOUS on Broadway! It runs until February 4th. What a stellar cast. It was pumping on all cylinders like a well oiled machine. It tackles racism and jockeyed between taking your breath away and forcing you to howl with laughter. The lead actor, Leslie Odom Jr, talked from beginning to end and was spitting these monologues out at a level that was Olympic worthy. I know what it is like to talk from the moment you step foot on stage to curtain and his instrument was so finely tuned that he drove that train and kept up an athletic pace. Michelle Clunie Instagram - David Benjamin Mixner August 16, 1946~ March 11, 2024 We lost a giant today. David was the original gangster. He was a legend in the LGBTQ Community, an activist with unwavering moral fiber and a heart filled with enormous love for his fellow man. I remember the moment I fell in love with him. He stood up for me as I was hosting an event with him and Joan Garry. He didn't have to but that was David's way. He was a protector and it seeped into everything he did. Here he is with a three month old Dashiell who kept going after his cup (lol) and my dear friend Gary Belis. David emailed me about 6 months ago to say we should spend some time together. I knew what he meant and booked a ticket. We had our last dinner in NY on November 7th. He said thank you for everything I had done and I told him thank you for everything he gave us. We hugged. I do not think he took that last walk alone. I believe firmly that those of us who came here for a purpose bigger than ourselves are inextricably linked. Through our shared victories and even our losses we move forward, arms locked in life and in death. A little piece of us went with David and a little piece of David stayed with us. Michelle Clunie Instagram - I almost didn’t make it to DC for the signing of the respect for Marriage act. I waffled back and forth knowing the trip would have to be done in about 22 hours. I am so glad I did. It was just the burst of hope that we all need right now and a beautiful confirmation that democracy works when we work it, that we can make great things happen in this country. It was a gorgeous and pure celebration of love and at the center of it, for me, was my dear friend Todd who has worked relentlessly and selflessly to give everything he can to equality and democracy. A big thank you to him for encouraging me to get on that plane and make the trip. It was a whirlwind and I almost missed my flight back but we do not get these Moments back. Michelle Clunie Instagram - I remember one day, during the pandemic, Dashiell was having a tough time and I sat in the middle of the floor holding him in my arms while he cried. He was maybe 6? I said to him, “ I love you so much, I would rather be with you during your hardest moment than anywhere else. I’ll sit here all day and cry with you”. He immediately stopped crying. He just looked up at me and his tears dried up and he was ready to play. I love being his Mama. Thank you Dashiell for finding me. You were certainly meant to be my son and I love our journey. Michelle Clunie Instagram - Michael Butler who was the original producer of HAIR, the one responsible for bringing it to Broadway, died on November 7th (my birthday). He was 96 years old. He lived an extraordinary life. He was an advisor to President Kennedy but gave up his political aspirations to revolutionize theatre and boy did he ever. He turned it upside down with HAIR. I was able to spend time with him after meeting him through my dear friend Charles. He came to the house and I visited him at his condo before he was moved into a home. The conversation always ran the gamut from politics to art to travel to laughter and more. I told him things I never told anyone and he told me about Audrey Hepburn who I’ve always loved. His life was extraordinary but more so, he took what life had given him and kicked off a revolution- that is where I connected with him. I have always connected deeply to people who have taken their chosen profession and turned it on its head. God bless you Michael and here is to the people who do not see the world the way it is but rather the way it could be and set out to do something about it, here is to the dreamers and the visionaries. You truly were an American original. I’m so glad you met Dashiell. Rest well good man and I’ll see ya on the other side.. just much further down the road but save me a seat next to ya- I want to sit with the rowdy kids xx ❤️

I love his sense of humor, his knowledge of nature at such a young age, his sensitivity and the way he can size up an adult in about three seconds. At three years old he was sitting at a table with a bunch of adults discussing the expansion of space and we were trying to figure out where space ends and he chimes in, “ Space ends in the future because it is constantly expanding”. Michelle Clunie Instagram - When my Dad passed away after having two massive strokes he was surrounded by family. The nurses all fought to take care of him. Right up until the end he kept everyone laughing. Even after the doctor told him he had zero chance of survival and half of his body was paralyzed, he still tried to get up out of the hospital bed. He was inching his way off the bed, planning his escape. When I say my father was tough, I am simply not sure how to explain it to someone if they didn’t see it with their own eyes. He was also as sweet as he was tough and he believed you practiced being a gentleman for those moments when it is challenging to be a gentleman. Happy heavenly birthday Papa. I love you and miss you and feel you watching over us 💕💕💕
Michelle Clunie Instagram - Before the world changed. Back of a cab in London, Dashiell’s first time there. This was by far one of our best vacations ever; Greece, London and Paris. I have a video of Dashiell seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time. I think I have watched it over a hundred times. I’m so glad I took the time to take Dashiell to Paris and London after Greece. It was completely spontaneous. We haven’t really travelled for close to two years so these memories have sustained us. 💕🙏🏻💕

I feel him cheering us on. I know he is proud of the boy Dashiell is becoming. I know he is sending us bear hugs and joy and angels to surround us. 💕💕💕I love you Dad. I’ll continue to raise a mensch who will continue to make the world a better place. 💕
Michelle Clunie Instagram - Five years ago today my Father passed away. I was so broken hearted, I felt like I was having a heart attack. I called my GP and after every test and EKG imaginable he said I had the heart of a 28 year and what was going on? I told him my father passed away and he said you truly have a broken heart- it’s a real thing. I still cry once in awhile at the most bizarre moments. I still talk to my father as if he is simply ‘waiting for me in the other room’. I keep him close and I know he is hovering around me and Dashiell as the fierce protector he always was. Grief is funny. True grief leaves a hole in your heart but over time you no longer fall into the hole, you simply learn to live with it. I guess this is the price we pay for loving. How lucky are we to love. This was my father’s last time at the beach, the day he taught Dashiell to fly a kite. Rip Daddy. We love you 💕

Michelle Clunie Instagram - This is 8. Hard to believe 8 years ago I made a gorgeous classic rock playlist for Dashiell's birth but I ended up needing a c-section. I turned to my nurse on our way to the OR and said, " The music.. my music, I made a playlist". She said, " We have pandora, who do you like?" and as I was being rushed into the OR I shouted, "Beatles!". Dashiell was born 40 minutes later to HELLO/GOODBYE. That night I held him and we listened to the entire playlist which was filled with all the greats; Van Morrison, Joplin, S&G, Elton John, Stones. So Dashiell's first night on Planet Earth we huddled on a little hospital bed and had a sing along. And I wonder why he was born with that ultra cool rockstar energy- you know the kind-really understated and cool and very quiet, almost awkward and shy- until he sings or you give him a mic. Then he turns into David Bowie, making up weird and wild songs or he belts it out like.. well.. here.. one of his fav bands is Imagine Dragons. Here he is singing to a cactus after swimming all day in Hawaii. I will always be his best audience. I love your voice Dashiell. He made such an effort at 85 to play with Dashiell, to make a good impression on him. At the time I didn’t think much of it- he was always a stand up guy. Looking back I realize he knew he was living on borrowed time and wanted to give it all to his last grandchild. Even in the hospital he made everyone laugh. He never made it about himself- he wanted everyone to have a good time and not feel sorry for him. So many lessons he gave us in those last few years. 💕 💕💕thanks for hovering around us tough guy. Warrior boy. Anyway, I am proud to co-host the first Teamster’s pride party tomorrow. We can thank the great Lindsay Dougherty for this. She is the head of the film and Tv teamsters and has a tattoo of Jimmy Hoffa on her left arm. She is old school. She is standing by the WGA and has given her word. She says what she means and she means what she says. I hope to see more alliances like this forming over the next few years. If we ever form a true progressive coalition in this country and lock arms and have one another’s backs.. we will be able to accomplish anything and more but we must understand our rights are intertwined and we sink or swim together. The colors were like sherbet exploded all over the stage with costumes by the wonderful Isaac Mizrahi. Music, Burt Bacharach- the lyrics of Hal David.. all of it was simply a love letter to Happiness and certainly what the world needs now. What made me cry however was the voice of an angel, the one and only Broadway star Marcy Harriel. Please support this production and the arts here in Los Angeles. Right now the world, adults and especially children need the arts more than ever. I do not see art as expendable, rather I see art as everything and a sign as to the health of a culture. Her authenticity, her vulnerability, her artistry and the largesse with which she shares it all is incomparable.. and that gorgeous angelic, bluesy voice of hers- it’s not the kind of voice you’re born with- it’s the kind of voice you earn through pain and triumph. She simply left nothing in the oven. Go buy her book, STORIES I MIGHT REGRET TELLING YOU. She also sang SONGBIRD which just floored me. I love when you see a movie or hang out with an artist or read a great book and it inspires you to go out and create. Martha Wainwright is simply walking inspiration and everything an artist should be. Chris was already a teacher at the studio, very young teacher. I had a massive crush on Chris. What struck me at the concert was Tina Turner’s energy and her legs. I was blown away by her. Blown. Away. We were only about 8 rows back, center. Her energy was constant and relentless from beginning to end. ‘A force of nature’ doesn’t even do her justice. When I dropped Chris off afterwards, John jumped out of the car and went with him. I put two and two together. I was sad but I was also happy for my friend John. It was the 80’s, we didn’t cry. We dusted off our hearts, moved on and cranked up the tunes. We had icons who were warriors. We had icons who showed us how to survive, how to thrive. What’s love got to do with it. What’s love but a second hand emotion. The sound track of our youth. A woman who owned her trauma and pain and used it to make the world better. She has no idea she created a generation of alchemists. We learned from her how to take our pain and turn it into something usable. We had icons who rocked their hearts out through their pain. We had a queen to teach us and show us the way. We had Tina Turner. Thank you for your energy and your example of a thriving woman in the face of adversity. When we did Queer as Folk we were just diving into these wonderfully flawed characters, focusing on great storytelling and forming a family which I think, coming from theatre, is one of the most important ingredients to a great show or film; Saying to another artist, you can be raw in front of me, naked in front of me, and get to work with respect to your craft and I am going to have your back. I had no idea at the time I was actually playing the first full time, hard 6 on the kinsey scale, never in the closet, series regular lesbian character on television. I hold her close to me because she is the closest, most personal character I ever played in my life. I had spent the summer in SF attending Drag shows and came back and told the producers about the wonderful Drag King shows. The producers wrote it in. As an artist, you must explore, you must go to the ends of the earth and back and push the envelope and buck the status quo. You must be a rebel. You must challenge small minds and lift others up. Dashiell asked me what was important about acting the other day and I told him imagery, stories, tv, film and stage have the ability to change hearts and minds faster than anything else. It unites us, informs us and sets us free. We get to examine the human condition in a world that wants everyone to be mindless foot soldiers. We get to say we are here, we belong, we exist. And it doesn’t matter who you are- most all stories are a hero’s journey, David and Goliath. It doesn’t matter if you are white, black, gay, woman, man, straight, Asian, Latino, transgender… the story is always about the underdog overcoming the odds. Those characters, people, get to stand up and say, we belong! And people go and see these stories where they belong and it can change someone’s life, a country or an entire world. That’s the power of acting and imagery. Storytelling. We have been telling stories since the beginning of time and we will until the end of time. That’s how I feel about acting. By the way, I think I could have played Elvis Presley 💪

It tackles racism and jockeyed between taking your breath away and forcing you to howl with laughter. The lead actor, Leslie Odom Jr, talked from beginning to end and was spitting these monologues out at a level that was Olympic worthy. I know what it is like to talk from the moment you step foot on stage to curtain and his instrument was so finely tuned that he drove that train and kept up an athletic pace. The lead actress, Kara Young slayed me with her physical comedy. She deserves the Tony now. May the entire show win multiple Tony’s! Brava and bravo to all involved. Life rips the soul right out of you and art reminds us that we have one. Thank you to a wonderful production and a wonderful afternoon at the theatre. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

It tackles racism and jockeyed between taking your breath away and forcing you to howl with laughter. The lead actor, Leslie Odom Jr, talked from beginning to end and was spitting these monologues out at a level that was Olympic worthy. I know what it is like to talk from the moment you step foot on stage to curtain and his instrument was so finely tuned that he drove that train and kept up an athletic pace. The lead actress, Kara Young slayed me with her physical comedy. She deserves the Tony now. May the entire show win multiple Tony’s! Brava and bravo to all involved. Life rips the soul right out of you and art reminds us that we have one. Thank you to a wonderful production and a wonderful afternoon at the theatre. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

He was 96 years old. He lived an extraordinary life. He was an advisor to President Kennedy but gave up his political aspirations to revolutionize theatre and boy did he ever. He turned it upside down with HAIR. I was able to spend time with him after meeting him through my dear friend Charles. He came to the house and I visited him at his condo before he was moved into a home. The conversation always ran the gamut from politics to art to travel to laughter and more. I told him things I never told anyone and he told me about Audrey Hepburn who I’ve always loved. His life was extraordinary but more so, he took what life had given him and kicked off a revolution- that is where I connected with him. I have always connected deeply to people who have taken their chosen profession and turned it on its head. God bless you Michael and here is to the people who do not see the world the way it is but rather the way it could be and set out to do something about it, here is to the dreamers and the visionaries. You truly were an American original. I’m so glad you met Dashiell. Even after the doctor told him he had zero chance of survival and half of his body was paralyzed, he still tried to get up out of the hospital bed. He was inching his way off the bed, planning his escape. When I say my father was tough, I am simply not sure how to explain it to someone if they didn’t see it with their own eyes. Yes they are graceful and poised but when you swim next to them you feel the sheer strength of their movement. It can be intimidating. But this is his happy place. He has swam with this Dolphin before. I think the first time he was a year old, the first time he was in the water with him. I turned to my nurse on our way to the OR and said, " The music.. my music, I made a playlist". She said, " We have pandora, who do you like?" and as I was being rushed into the OR I shouted, "Beatles!". Dashiell was born 40 minutes later to HELLO/GOODBYE. So Dashiell's first night on Planet Earth we huddled on a little hospital bed and had a sing along. And I wonder why he was born with that ultra cool rockstar energy- you know the kind-really understated and cool and very quiet, almost awkward and shy- until he sings or you give him a mic. Then he turns into David Bowie, making up weird and wild songs or he belts it out like.. well.. here.. one of his fav bands is Imagine Dragons. Caption : This is 8. Hard to believe 8 years ago I made a gorgeous classic rock playlist for Dashiell’s birth but I ended up needing a c-section. The colors were like sherbet exploded all over the stage with costumes by the wonderful Isaac Mizrahi. Music, Burt Bacharach- the lyrics of Hal David.. all of it was simply a love letter to Happiness and certainly what the world needs now. What made me cry however was the voice of an angel, the one and only Broadway star Marcy Harriel. Please support this production and the arts here in Los Angeles. Right now the world, adults and especially children need the arts more than ever. I do not see art as expendable, rather I see art as everything and a sign as to the health of a culture.
