The film climax took place at night and I was condensed to shooting this over the course of two half nights with one giant 10k light that I could only afford to rent for one night so we could only shoot in one direction for the most important scene of the film. We had stunts and a very complex and emotional scene and just writing about it is a little triggering. Since I just listened to the podcast @hiddenbrain about failures and how we never talk about failures only our successes, I didnā€™t succeed in getting the final scene I wanted in my head, but I shot to the very last second before my producer shut us down due to our pandemic curfew. I think about how I could have directed that last night better, but I learned so much in making BITE. Every frame was earned, every direction I gave or failed to give, made me a better director. Michelle Krusiec Instagram - Iā€™ve always been interested in gods and myths since I was a child. I think Nian was sprung from a place of my imagination that lived both in the real world and in the imagined. This film came from my response to the anti-Asian hate that assaulted us during the pandemic (and continues to pervade as it always has been) but the outcome of the story somehow included my own experience with a bully from when I was a kid. Michelle Krusiec Instagram - A dear friend of mine passed away on Friday morning and I didnā€™t feel like going to a film festival, but death makes you very present. I wanted to be there for others. Iā€™ve been going to #sdaff for many years and I knew on some level the embrace of community would be good. Good people everywhere at this festival. I made everyone do the silly photo thing, so thanks for indulging me. My friend was a force of life and spirit and she was the center of many communities. The film climax took place at night and I was condensed to shooting this over the course of two half nights with one giant 10k light that I could only afford to rent for one night so we could only shoot in one direction for the most important scene of the film. I wanted to be there for others. Iā€™ve been going to #sdaff for many years and I knew on some level the embrace of community would be good. Good people everywhere at this festival. I made everyone do the silly photo thing, so thanks for indulging me. My friend was a force of life and spirit and she was the center of many communities. Hereā€™s to her and to @pacartsmovement for bringing friends, family and filmmakers together through cinema. I did my first film intro for the film Raging Grace which was preceded by Nian. If you havenā€™t seen Raging Grace, itā€™s a great anti-colonial themed horror. #filmfestival #filmfestivallife #nianiscoming
