A Million Miles Away tells that story of the people behind the real life Jose Hernandez who helped him achieve his dreams of becoming an astronaut. Not just Jose himself but the teacher who helped his family understand and the family who listened. It’s a heart enriching, inspiring film (great for holidays). Playing Miss Young from the get-go was a tear jerker for me! I couldn’t say my own lines without falling apart. 🤣 I soaked up the time period and style of the film and loved shooting in Mexico with a wonderful, talented cast and crew! This cut didn’t break my 🏦 and it’s giving me some fresh energy for 2024. Since we shot during the HEIGHT of the pandemic while I was in the @americanfilminstitute Directing Workshop for Women - suffice it to say - this was an ambitious as F project. The film climax took place at night and I was condensed to shooting this over the course of two half nights with one giant 10k light that I could only afford to rent for one night so we could only shoot in one direction for the most important scene of the film. We had stunts and a very complex and emotional scene and just writing about it is a little triggering. Since I just listened to the podcast @hiddenbrain about failures and how we never talk about failures only our successes, I didn’t succeed in getting the final scene I wanted in my head, but I shot to the very last second before my producer shut us down due to our pandemic curfew. I think about how I could have directed that last night better, but I learned so much in making BITE. Every frame was earned, every direction I gave or failed to give, made me a better director. Michelle Krusiec Instagram - I’ve always been interested in gods and myths since I was a child. I think Nian was sprung from a place of my imagination that lived both in the real world and in the imagined. This film came from my response to the anti-Asian hate that assaulted us during the pandemic (and continues to pervade as it always has been) but the outcome of the story somehow included my own experience with a bully from when I was a kid. And I got to do it with my own funny flare. Ah, the sweet spot. 😈 Thanks @woodstockfilmfestival for including us this year! This award winning documentary INVISIBLE NATION about Taiwan, my home country, and President Tsai Ing Wen does a remarkable job of threading how the past and present impacts Taiwan now. Taiwan needs our allyship more than ever, but first we have to understand the political context of where we are in history.
