I’m sorry to say that this is simply a continuation of the performative cruelty we saw from the Conservatives.

The new Home Office guidance means that some refugees will never be allowed to feel secure and safe in their homes.

These people are already here. We’ve agreed they are refugees. Why refuse them citizenship simply because they took the only route that was available to them?

In an increasingly volatile world, taking a leaf from the far-right playbook will never end well - for any of us.

Our party and the British public - 75% of whom believe Britain should offer refuge to those fleeing war and persecution - are better than this.

Survivors are being put through a horrific ordeal for years, with little hope of justice being served, and Rishi Sunak refuses to even acknowledge the problem.

I was heckled when I raised this at #PMQs. Here’s what’s really happening:

Just 2.6% of rapes recorded in 2023 resulted in a charge that same year. Even fewer of these will end in conviction.

The average time between reporting and completion in court is 2 years, with many victims waiting far longer. The mental toll that takes on survivors is enormous.

No wonder 5 in 6 women who are raped don’t report it. Of those who do, 62% drop out of their cases - up from 44% in 2016. With a record number of cases currently waiting to go to court, the situation is only getting worse.

Sunak talks about tougher sentences, ignoring the fact that the vast majority of rapists never face justice at all.

The Tories are putting survivors through a living hell and allowing perpetrators to walk free.

They should be ashamed of themselves.

Nadia Whittome Instagram - Since the Tories promised to ban no-fault evictions, 85,000 households have faced the risk of homelessness as a result of one.

Five years on, the ban has been delayed indefinitely.

In unrelated news, 1 in 5 Tory MPs, including at least seven cabinet ministers, are landlords.

Nadia Whittome Instagram - It’s been a year since the shocking attacks in our city that cruelly claimed the lives of Ian Coates, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber.

It was moving to join local leaders at St Peter’s church today remembering them and to meet one of those injured that day.

Their families are still fighting for answers about missed opportunities that might have prevented their loved ones’ killings.

I’ve called on the government to convene an independent inquiry.
