Caption : Thanks to superhuman efforts from dozens of amazing medical staff, it looks like I am on the mend. Please keep sending your prayers to Asclepius and Hygieia – there’s still work to do. But I am feeling much stronger, so I’ll try to keep that up! (Thanks to my pal L for getting me some gothier clothes, now I’m allowed to wear my own again 🖤)Likes : 2357

Caption : Just a note to say thanks so much for all your messages and well-wishes – it helped me to feel connected to myself when I really needed it. I’m out of hospital, and though I won’t be running races any time soon, I did manage a short walk in the sunshine today. Thank you for bearing with us – some more tour dates will have to shift, I’m afraid, but we’ll get things back on track as and when we can and we’ll keep you updated as we do it. Special thanks to M who has kept this part of my life running, and P for organising my convalescence the same way she organises most of my life. Couldn’t have done it without you.Likes : 1647

Join me and historian guide Ioanna Kalypso Glypti in Cyprus and Greece, to learn about the Greek goddesses on location. Info & booking via the link in my bio. I know this is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime luxury retreat most of us can’t go on as a guest, so here’s a free cultural event you can experience online. Posted @withregram • @pompei79 Blue is the new black (room) in #Pompeii An extraordinary discovery of a sacred room in Region IX decorated in a rare blue colour (Egyptian Blue). The red painted niches would be used in religious worship and offerings. And wonderfully, despite the rooms magnificence, it was part of the Roman building works at the time of the eruption and contains upturned empty amphorae and building materials in discrete piles on the floor including mortar, cocciopesto and oyster shells. Caption : Oh, you guys. I was so gutted to miss doing Hay, my Divine Might show and the radio recordings. But because I was couldn’t make it, I recorded the missing episodes last night at the beautiful Radio Theatre and it was MAGICAL. It all felt impossibly far away when I was on the other side of the world and then it was the most wonderful crowd (you are always wonderful), and the shows were the right length (always a stress when I do solo episodes) and I loved every single second. Two more shows to go next week and then our tenth series is complete! *gets scribbling*Likes : 770

Caption : Yesterday, I caught sight of a letter from the younger Pliny to his friend Cornutus, in which he mostly complains of eye trouble, and the treatment he is trying to improve it (darkened room, Cornutus’ suggestion). It then concludes, ‘I was delighted to receive the chicken you sent. My eyes are sharp enough, even though they’re still swollen, to see that it’s a very fat one.’ This raises all kinds of intriguing thoughts – did the chicken come with Cornutus’ last letter of eye treatment advice? Did the chicken BRING the letter, like a helpful pigeon? But most especially, it raises the Latin word pinguissimam – meaning very fat. There is apparently no certain etymology for the word ‘penguin’, (it may even come from the Welsh apparently). But one derivation is from this Latin word, meaning fat or oily. And thus raises the prospect of Pliny receiving a penguin-like chicken in the mail.Likes : 591

Caption : Happy father’s day to all the great dads and kids of great dads! For everyone else, this is your annual reminder that Kronos was so threatened by the idea of his children’s future success that he swallowed them whole the moment they were born. Only when Rhea switched her youngest son – Zeus – for a large stone, prompting Kronos to swallow that instead, did the cannibalism cease. Zeus then forced his father to regurgitate his older siblings, which enabled a whole new generation of toxic rivalries to begin. You’re welcome! Here is Kronos saying he couldn’t manage another baby even if you poured caramel sauce on it.Likes : 542

Caption : It’s election day here in the UK, so here is a coin from the first century BCE, depicting an election during the Roman Republic. On the back of the coin you can see a really clear image of a man dropping his voting tablet into a cista, or basket. Numismatists have identified that his tablet is inscribed with the letter V — short for ubi rogas – as you ask. So this was a vote in favour of a proposal or candidate. Perhaps we can see a modern echo of this Latin phrase in the Obama slogan, Yes we can. On the other side of the coin is the goddess Vesta (you can tell it’s her because she is veiled). So not only do I hope you’re voting positively today, but I also hope that the goddess who lives at the centre of our homes and civic spaces – who turns buildings into places where communities gather – is presiding over all our votes. Did I mention she is often depicted in Pompeian bakeries? Why not buy yourself a bun when you’ve voted? Have a lovely day! Caption : Election day! At least, it is where I live. And an opportunity to remember that people haven’t always voted FOR politicians; in 5th century BCE Athens, men (citizenship was restricted to adult male Athenians), could also vote AGAINST politicians or other noteworthy people. So if someone annoyed you, you could scratch his name onto a sherd of pottery (the Greek word for this is ostrakon – which is where our word ostracism comes from), and whoever got the most votes could be booted out of Athens for 10 years. There were some safeguards – a quorum of 6000 voters had to be present. But the system was set up to prevent demagoguery – as a general rule, anyone who has a high enough profile to affect democractic votes will also antagonise enough people to be at risk of ostracism. So unless your policies had a good impact quickly, you might be out on your ear. Here we can see lots of ostraka with names scratched on: Themistocles, Aristeides, Hippocrates and more. I often find myself thinking that ostracism would be a good custom to revive, since it would really separate the popular politician from the ones who just shout culture war slogans. Happy voting!Likes : 525

Caption : You know those times when the gods disguise themselves as mortals and get it wrong (Athene in the Odyssey pretending to be a friend of the family but then flying away like a bird when the chat is over, Demeter in the Homeric Hymn pretending to be a nurse but then towering so tall she almost touches the ceiling etc etc)? This is the vibe captured here in Regent’s Park today. Just blend in, dude. Yeah, with the other tulips. Any colour is fi-Likes : 432

Caption : It is so rare for us to know the name of an ordinary person who had an ordinary job in antiquity – we tend to know far more about leaders, statesmen, warriors, orators etc. But look at this – from the Athenian Agora Museum. You can see a set of hobnails, for boots. And a set of bone eyelets, for the leather thongs that tie your shoes in place. And there is also the base of a broken cup that tells us the name of the cobbler who used these items: Simonos. So, these objects belonged to Simon the shoe-maker. Isn’t that terrific?Likes : 407
